This monastery is one of the important religious shrines in Armenia, with several churches and altars. KhorVirap means "deep pit", which refers to the pit in which St. Gregory, who led Armenia to Christianity, was imprisoned by the Armenian king Tiridates III before gaining legal status. Legend has it that there are many poisonous insects in the deep pit. Saint Gregory was imprisoned here for 13 years and survived by secret relief from a miracle and a miraculous woman.
