As it is an island floating on Lake Onega, you have to cross by boat to get to the island. When you arrive at the Kizhi Island wharf, you will be given a card to wear around your neck* and disembark, from which you can walk to the churches. (*The card was collected when boarding the return boat.) As you walk, you will gradually see the beautiful wooden church buildings of the Russian Orthodox Church, and you will feel as if you have wandered into a fairy tale world.

We visited a lovely old farmhouse and were treated to some lovely singing (of a Marian anthem) by a group of orthodox men.
