Datong Fahua Temple The three most worthwhile temples to see in Datong Ancient City are Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, and Fahua Temple. Fahua Temple is located in the eastern part of Datong Ancient City and is named after the Lotus Sutra (Fahua Jing) stored in the Fahua Pagoda in the temple. The Fahua Pagoda is the only existing inverted bowl-shaped glazed Lama pagoda in Datong. It was built in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties and has a long history. Except for the Fahua Pagoda, the other buildings were rebuilt later. However, the new buildings are also wonderful and worth seeing. For example, the pavilion-style drum tower and bell tower in picture two are relatively rare, and the circular side door next to the main hall creates a Jiangnan garden-like atmosphere, making it a surprising photo spot. The white pagoda in picture nine is the most valuable Fahua Temple Pagoda, which is beautiful and elegant. However, it is visibly skewed. Don't miss it when you come to Datong! There is a risk of seeing it once less each time.

As a tourist, an overly in-depth experience might not be realistic, but trust me, you need at least three days in Datong to even scratch the surface. In the second year of Baoda (1122) during the late Liao Dynasty, most of its buildings were destroyed by war. From the sixth year of Tianhui of the Jin Dynasty (1128) to the third year of Huangtong of the Jin Dynasty (1143), the monk Yuanman presided over the reconstruction, which took 15 years to complete. In the tenth year of Zhengtong Period of Ming Dynasty (1445), it was renamed as Shanhua Temple. The temple covers an area of ​​more than 30,000 square meters, and its architectural layout still retains the Tang Dynasty style. Shanhua Temple is the most complete and largest existing building from the Liao and Jin dynasties in China. The entire building faces north and south, with the Hall of Heavenly Kings (mountain gate), the Hall of Three Saints and the Main Hall arranged in sequence along the central axis. To the left and right of the Main Hall are the East and West Duo Halls, with the attic-style buildings Puxian Pavilion and Manjusri Pavilion on both sides in the front, and the East and West Side Halls on both sides in front of the Three Saints Hall. The buildings in the temple are staggered in height, clearly distinguished in importance, symmetrical on both sides, and magnificent. The hall preserves precious cultural relics such as statues, murals, and inscriptions.
