Ikyu Temple, also known as Kuen-an, is located in Jingtanabe City near Uji City. It was formerly known as Miaosheng Temple. It was a Zen training dojo built by Nanpu Shaoming, a great master in the Kamakura period, after learning Zen Buddhism from a Chinese monk Xutang. After the war from 1331 to 1334, Myosheng Temple was greatly damaged. After Zen Master Yixiu took over the mantle of the sixth generation of Zen masters, he rebuilt the temple in 1456, and named it "Reward Temple" in order to repay the teachers of all dynasties. Ikyu lived here ever since until his death in 1481. The Yixiu here is also the prototype of the protagonist in the cartoon "Smart Yixiu".
