The Taipei National Railway Museum, located in Xinyi District, Taipei City, Taiwan, is housed within the 17-hectare National Historic Site of the former Taipei Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works. It is a museum dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of railway culture. Planning for the Taipei Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works began in 1930 and the museum officially opened in 1935. It was responsible for the repair, assembly, maintenance, and repair of Taiwan's trains. After relocating to the Fugang Rolling Stock Depot in Taoyuan in 2012, the site became a focal point for the preservation of cultural heritage. In 2015, thanks to the efforts of representatives and citizens, the entire Taipei Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works complex was designated a National Historic Site. At the end of 2016, the Executive Yuan approved the "Implementation Plan for the Revitalization and Transformation of the Taipei Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works into a National Railway Museum Campus." The Ministry of Culture began restoration and hardware and software renovations in 2017, a nearly nine-year project that officially opened its first phase to the public on July 31, 2025. The museum aims to showcase the history and cultural heritage of Taiwan's railways, providing a venue for both domestic and international visitors to learn about railway technology and history. The museum's first phase of openings includes six historic buildings: the Diesel-Electric Workshop, the Main Office, the Technician Training Institute, the Materials Testing Laboratory, the Grand Hall, and the Bathhouse. Exhibitions include three permanent exhibitions, three special exhibitions, and two on-site exhibitions. Permanent exhibitions such as "Power. Trains - Diesel-Electric Workshop" showcase 24 historic rolling stock, using large sliding screens and audio-visual technology to provide a glimpse inside the diesel-electric locomotives. Admission is required. "Movement and Emotion - Culture and Memories on the Railway" explores the intertwining of railways and people's lives through literature, film, folk songs, and art. Admission is free. "Misty Times - Employee Bathhouse" recreates scenes from the lives of employees and is free. Special exhibitions include "Taiwan Railway History in Culture," "Infinite Love for Trains - Taiwanese Railway Photographer Gu Renrong," and "Open! The exhibition features "Assembly Workshop," while the on-site exhibition includes "The Main Office" and "Employee Life in the Auditorium." Admission is free. There's also a "Family Space" and free rides on heritage vehicles on weekends and national holidays. A 335-meter-long north-south passage connecting Civic Boulevard and Keelung Road is also open, allowing visitors to get up close and personal with the historic buildings. A light jacket is recommended for cool winter weather. Rest areas and exhibition spaces are available within the museum, but some activities may require reservations, so confirm in advance.
