Visit Tianping Mountain in winter and feel the beauty of ancient maple trees
Tianping Mountain is located 6.5 kilometers northwest of Mudu Ancient Town, Suzhou, with an altitude of more than 200 meters. It is named Tianping Mountain because of its flat top. In the 11th year of Tang Xiantong (870), Fan Sui, the great-grandfather of Fan Zhongyan, was transferred to Suzhou and buried on the eastern foot of Tianping Mountain after his death. Later, Fan Zhongyan's great-grandfather, grandfather and father all chose to be buried here, making Tianping Mountain the ancestral tomb of Fan Zhongyan.
In the second year of the Baoli reign of Emperor Wenzong of the Tang Dynasty (826), the monk Yong'an founded Baiyun Temple on the southern foot of Tianping Mountain. After Fan Zhongyan achieved success and fame, in order to thank the court for its grace, he submitted a petition to convert Baiyun Temple into a temple for merit and incense. Song Renzong expressed his appreciation for this and not only bestowed a plaque with the name of the temple, but also gave the entire mountain to Fan Zhongyan. Therefore, Tianping Mountain was also named Ci Mountain, commonly known as Fanfen Mountain.
Some people jokingly call Tianping Mountain one of the seven "small hills" of Suzhou. Don't underestimate this "little hill in the south". It has steep and dangerous mountains, with rugged rocks all the way. It is famous in the south of the Yangtze River for its "red maples, clear springs and strange rocks". It is known as one of the four major maple viewing spots in China along with Beijing's Xiangshan Mountain, Hunan's Yuelu Mountain and Nanjing's Qixia Mountain. It is known as "the best mountain in Wuzhong" and "the most beautiful place in Jiangnan". Tianping Mountain has been a tourist destination since the Tang Dynasty. The relics of historical celebrities such as Bai Juyi, Fan Zhongyan, Gao Qi, Shen Zhou, Tang Yin, Wen Zhengming, Kangxi and Qianlong were left here.
There are large tracts of red maple trees at the foot of Tianping Mountain, and most of the signs say 420 years. These red maple trees were moved from Fujian by Fan Yunlin, the 17th generation grandson of Fan Zhongyan. There were more than 380 trees at that time, and 176 are still left. These red maple trees are old and strong. Some of them are 20 to 30 meters tall and require three people to hug them. They have become a great wonder of Tianping Mountain. After the frost in autumn, the forest is dyed with brilliant colors, like a rosy cloud, and is known as the "Thousand-foot Red Zone". By then, tourists will gather in large numbers.
In winter, although the maple leaves of Tianping Mountain have fallen and the trees are withered, it still shows its majestic posture towering into the clouds, which contrasts beautifully with the blue sky and white clouds, and still retains its beautiful scenery. If the autumn scenery is a series of oil paintings, then the winter scenery is a series of ancient poems.
There is Baiyun Spring halfway up the mountain. The spring is formed by water from the cracks in the rocks. It never dries up and tastes extremely sweet. It is the treasure of Tianping Mountain. Lu Yu, the tea saint of the Tang Dynasty, rated it as "the best water in Wuzhong." To the west there are two cliffs, opposing each other like a gate, commonly known as Longmen, also known as Yitiantian. Behind the Bijia Peak on the mountainside, there are strange rocks scattered in all directions, towering and steep, like the court tablets held by ancient ministers when they met the emperor, so they are called "Wan Hu Chao Tian". There is the ancestral tomb of Fan Zhongyan in Dongwu, commonly known as "Fan Tomb".
There is a lake-viewing platform on the top of the mountain, with a round stone on it facing Taihu Lake, called the Lake Mirror. You can overlook the beautiful city of Suzhou and see the vast Taihu Lake in the distance.
