Penghu Islands
#Tongliang Ancient Banyan
The more than 300-year-old banyan tree in front of the Baoan Temple in Tongliang Village is the largest sacred tree in Penghu. It has a total of 95 aerial roots. Its green shade covers the open space in front of the temple, forming a square for resting and cooling off. If you don’t observe carefully, it’s hard to believe that all the branches come from the same tree.
#Penghu Cross-sea Bridge
The Penghu Cross-sea Bridge is 2,494 meters long and spans the Houmen Waterway between the Baisha and Xiyu Islands. The water flows rapidly, with a speed said to be up to 3 meters per second, making it the second most dangerous current in the Penghu waters. Whenever the northeast monsoon comes in winter, the waves are turbulent and it is difficult to sail. Therefore, the construction of the cross-sea bridge began in 1965 and was completed and opened to traffic in 1970 to solve the transportation difficulties to and from Fisherman's Island. Later, due to severe corrosion and bridge collapse, the embankment was widened in 1984 and completed and opened to traffic in 1996 as a new two-lane bridge. From a distance, it looks like a rainbow over the sea. It is not only of great tourist value, but also allows for smooth traffic between Xiyu and Baisha. To this day, early concrete columns and frames are still left in the sea area on the north side of the Xiyu end of the bridge, and mottled bridge piers are left on the Xiyu side, respectively indicating that the early Xiyu electricity was transmitted across the sea by high-voltage power lines, and the vicissitudes of history of the old bridge after its retirement.
#Fisherman Island Lighthouse
The Fisherman Island Lighthouse is located at the southwest end of Fisherman Island in Penghu County. The tower was originally located on the site of the Xiyu Tower Light, which was built in 1778. It was originally a seven-story stone tower built on the high ground outside Fisherman's Island (Xiyu). Lights were lit on the tower every night. This was the first navigation mark along the coast of Taiwan and the only recorded lighthouse originally established in our country. A stone tablet with the inscription "Xiyu Tower Light" is still preserved. The Fisherman's Island Lighthouse was built by the Customs in 1875. The tower is made of round iron and is equipped with three cast-iron fog cannons. In 1915, the Fisherman's Island Lighthouse, office, fog cannon, fog horn, exhibition room, stone tablet, wall, lighthouse keeper's dormitory and observation tower were all painted white, which is eye-catching and dazzling between the blue sea and green grassland. The Fisherman Island Lighthouse is a national historic site, and the surrounding area is listed as a historic park. It has been open to the public since 1992.
