Wat Ku Tao is a small temple located in the city of Chiang Mai. This temple is the center of faith for Burmese people living in Chiang Mai because according to historical accounts, the Wat Ku Tao pagoda was likely built during the time when Burma ruled Chiang Mai and the entire Lanna Kingdom. The round pagoda that you see here contains the ashes of King Mengchanatha Mang Dui, who once led an army to invade Ayutthaya under the command of Phra Maha Uparaja Nandabureng, his half-brother and the king of Burma at that time. However, he was defeated by Phra Naresuan and later surrendered to him. He was cut off from King Nandabureng, so he could not return to his homeland until he died in Chiang Mai in 2156. Phra Maha Mangchuay Thao, his younger brother, organized the cremation ceremony and ordered the construction of the Ku Tao pagoda to contain his ashes and relics.
