Fantastic little 2 day break to celebrate daughter’s birthday, made complete by a visit to Edinburgh castle and a trip to five sisters zoo about 30 minutes drive away. Absolutely stunning views from the castle, but beware the climb to reach the top! Those stairs are not for the faint hearted! Well worth the burning leg pain though once you get to the top, and don’t miss the 1 o’clock gun firing while you’re up there! There’s a lovely little cafe, and a coffee bar within the castle grounds, and the little shop at the top offers whiskey tasting and some fabulous little souvenirs to remember your trip. The five sisters zoo is lovely, and not too swamped with crowds. They offer different animal experiences if you can book them in advance (we didn’t as it was a spur of the moment visit), and there’s some little fairground rides inside (for a fee) to keep the kids entertained between seeing all the animals. Mostly it’s fairly level ground, but there are a few hilly areas, but nothing like the climb to the castle (fortunately). All in all it’s a lovely city to visit for a little break from normality, and there’s plenty to see and do so plan wisely to fit everything in!
