⭐ When it comes to Putian, Fujian, many people might only think of Putian hospitals, but this underrated small city is not only the birthplace of Mazu culture, it was also an important node for ships traveling north and south along the Maritime Silk Road, boasting a rich historical and cultural heritage. I initially visited Putian just to see the hidden ancient pagoda at Dongshan Bao'en Temple, but then I discovered many more little treasures here. ⭐ Dongshan Bao'en Temple was founded in the first year of the Song dynasty’s Chunhua era. The temple’s most representative structure, the Bao'en Temple Pagoda, was built during the Shaosheng period of the Song dynasty. It is an imitation pavilion-style octagonal three-story hollow stone structure. The base features 37 intricately carved lions in various poses around the waist of the Sumeru pedestal, reflecting the style of the Sui and Tang dynasties. Just across the wall is the Dongshan Meishan Mazu Palace, which has a typical Minnan temple architectural style and is also worth a visit. You can pre-purchase ferry tickets and entrance tickets (total ¥125) via the "Meizhou Island Ferry" mini-program. Once on the island, there are no additional fees except for renting vehicles, dining, or accommodation. However, Taiwanese visitors using a Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents (Taiwan Compatriot Permit) only need to pay for the ferry ticket, which must be purchased on-site at the Wenjia Wharf ticket office. Rainbow Road is a regular road painted with colorful designs; however, it can get busy with traffic, so exercise caution and avoid lingering too long. Mazu Temple is bustling with worshippers, but it is relatively quiet in the morning. From there, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the densely packed, staggered houses in the surrounding area.
