Some are so off the beaten path that even locals ask, “What else is there besides mountains?” From my own experience, some places are just a 2-hour high-speed train ride away, offering a huge contrast from wilderness to urban life. 01 Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai The sun is so strong during the day it’s hard to keep your eyes open, but once you find shade, it feels like an early autumn day. ⏰ Go to Jade Lake at 7 AM. The light shines through the water, making the green so rich it looks like it’s melting. ⚠ The salt lake stings your feet. Wearing flip-flops and soaking for a long time will hurt, so bring a pair of thick-soled sandals. Chaerhan Salt Lake is more expansive than Chaka, but the wind is strong enough to blow your hat off. It’s best to visit after 4 PM to avoid the crowds. 📍 From Golmud, head toward Kunlun Pass, where the altitude reaches over 4,000 meters. There’s still some snow on the roadside in July. If you’re short on time, choose either Jade Lake or Chaerhan Salt Lake. I picked Jade Lake because its green has the texture of an oil painting brushstroke. 02 Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture | Hunan You’ve probably heard of Fenghuang Ancient Town, but only a few have experienced the waterfall sounds at Dehang Grand Canyon. 🍜 The rice noodles in the ancient town start selling at 6 AM. Add a spoonful of local chopped chili for a spicy, refreshing taste. To avoid tourists, head west. Under the Aizhai Bridge, there’s a small path where you can step into the riverbed and cool your toes until they curl. ⚠ The bar street in the ancient town is noisy on Saturday nights. If you stay near Hongqiao, choose a room not facing the river. ㊙ I didn’t visit Shibadong Village, but locals say it’s become quite commercialized, so you can skip it and focus on Fenghuang and Dehang. 03 Shigatse | Tibet Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, has temperatures in the single digits even in July. ⚠ The border pass permit must be applied for in advance at your registered residence or in Lhasa. Applying in Shigatse means at least a one-hour wait. The afternoon sun shines on the golden roof of Tashilhunpo Monastery, which can be dazzling. Sunglasses are recommended. 🚄 The train from Lhasa to Shigatse takes just over four hours, with views of the Yarlung Tsangpo River along the way. If you’re short on time, you can visit Tashilhunpo Monastery without staying overnight. But to see Everest, plan to stay at least two days and watch the weather. 04 Shantou | Guangdong Isn’t it crazy to visit Shantou in July? Nan’ao Island’s sea breeze will tell you otherwise. 🍜 Seafood stalls on the island catch and cook fresh seafood on the spot. The shrimp caught after the 3 PM boat trip back are sweet and crisp. ⏰ Go to Qing’ao Bay at 5:30 PM. After a full day in the sun, the water is still warm, but the waves are a bit strong. If you’re not a strong swimmer, don’t go too far. ⚠ Nan’ao Bridge gets so congested on holidays it’s unbelievable. It’s better to visit on a weekday. If you just want to eat, the Xiaogongyuan area in Shantou city is more recommended. There’s a sweet soup shop that’s been open for decades. A bowl costs 5 yuan and cools you to the core. 05 Xianyang | Shaanxi Qianling Tomb is much cooler than the Terracotta Warriors and so quiet you can hear your own breath. 📍 Watch the sunset from Wangfeng Terrace on the east side of Qianling. The horizon turns dark red. 🍜 Yuanjia Village is often criticized for being too commercial, but their baked noodles are authentic. A bowl with sour soup will make you sweat on your forehead. ⚠ The underground palace at Qianling was destroyed, so the main attraction is the grandeur of the tomb mound. Those wanting to see the underground palace might be disappointed. If you’re bringing elderly people, visit the scenic area in the morning and have lunch at Yuanjia Village. It makes for a smooth day. 06 Benxi | Liaoning Benxi Water Cave is a natural refrigerator, with temperatures around the teens year-round. You’ll need a jacket in July. ⚠ The cave stairs are slippery, so wearing non-slip shoes is a must. Climbing Wunv Mountain in Huanren is a bit tiring on your backside, but the view of the green Huanren Reservoir from the top is worth it. 🍜 Maple leaves at Guanmenshan turn red in September. In July, it’s mainly about the green shade and streams for a cool escape. 🚄 The high-speed train from Shenyang to Benxi takes only half an hour, making a day trip easy. If you have more time, stay overnight in Benxi and try roasted tofu skin. The oldest night market stall has the longest line, but the taste is worth the wait. 07 Pingliang | Gansu Besides its martial arts fame, Kongtong Mountain is cool enough in July to need a jacket. 📍 Enter from the east gate, walk through the middle terrace, then take the cable car up to avoid steep stairs. The temple’s incense mixes with the scent of pine, and it’s so quiet you can hear the wind rustling through the leaves. ⏰ Start early. Before 9 AM, there are fewer people and the mist hasn’t cleared, making the mountain look like it’s floating on clouds. ⚠ The higher you go, the thicker the fog. If visibility drops to just a few dozen meters, don’t push for the summit. Safety first. If you descend early, try the meat-stuffed flatbread in Pingliang city. The carb and fat combo is pure joy. 08 Xinxiang | Henan The biggest attraction at Baoquan Tourist Area in July is water play. 📍 Take the shuttle from the entrance to the innermost “Jade Maiden Waterfall.” The creek water is crystal clear and just ankle-deep, perfect for lying back and cooling off. ⚠ But weekends are crowded and splashing everywhere. For quiet photos, visit on a weekday. Don’t just focus on Moganshan or crowded beach cities for summer escapes. I found 8 affordable and cool places within a 2-hour high-speed train ride. Some locals even think the prices are crazy low. There are wild canyons, ancient city walls, and hidden gems with views of snowy mountains and lakes. July and August are perfect for visiting, and it won’t cost much to bring the kids. 01 Chenzhou | Hunan ⏰ Get there early every day. The best sight in Chenzhou is the morning mist over Dongjiang Lake. Arrive before 6:30 AM to see a thin layer of fog floating like fairy dust over the water. 🚄 It’s less than a 40-minute taxi ride from Chenzhou West Station, costing 40 yuan. The breeze will lull the kids to sleep. 08 Shuozhou | Shanxi Shahu Kou in Shuozhou looks like a movie set. It was the starting point of the ancient Western Trade Route. 🚄 Take a 2-hour high-speed train from Taiyuan to Shuozhou, then a taxi to the site. ⏰ Visit after 5 PM when the sun turns the city walls a warm orange. 📍 You can enter the remaining castle from the east side gap. Driving from Haixi, Qinghai, I arrived in Golmud. In the morning, I set off from the city and headed deep into the heart of the Kunlun Mountains, making a special stop at the Queen Mother of the West’s Jade Pool. Along the way, I visited several spots including the Kunlun sacred spring, Wuji Dragon and Phoenix Palace, and the Yuxu Peak viewpoint. Here is a summary of my visit experience. 📍Scenic area transportation · The Queen Mother of the West’s Jade Pool is located in the southern Kunlun Mountains of Golmud · Haixi, more than 200 km from the city center. It is the end point of the Kunlun tourism route, with a one-way drive of about 4 hours. · Self-driving/charter: There is no public transportation available. You must drive yourself or hire a car. The entire route is mainly paved, but the G109 national highway along the way is quite rough, with many roadworks, large potholes, and heavy trucks, so careful driving is essential. 📜Scenic area overview · Queen Mother of the West’s Jade Pool: Also known as the Black Sea, it is a natural alpine lake at the source of the Kunlun River, at an altitude of about 4,300 m. Legend says it is the sacred site where the Queen Mother of the West held her peach banquet. · Kunlun sacred spring: A year-round unfrozen spring in the Kunlun Mountains, known as the “Kunlun divine spring.” It is a must-stop spot when entering or leaving the Kunlun Mountains. · Wuji Dragon and Phoenix Palace: Located at the foot of Yuxu Peak, it is one of the highest-altitude Taoist temples in the world. · Yuxu Peak: At 5,980 m, its summit is snow-covered year-round and is a landmark snow mountain of the Kunlun range. · All the spots along this route are free to visit. However, seeing that the visitor center building is already completed, it will likely become a rated scenic area in the future. The altitude gradually increases along the way, so prepare in advance for altitude sickness and windproof, warm clothing. 🗓Tour process · Kunlun sacred spring: The first stop after leaving the city, taking nearly 2 hours. The spring source is under a pavilion. I saw drivers deliberately bringing containers to collect spring water. · Wuji Dragon and Phoenix Palace: Continuing deeper into the mountains, you reach this mountain temple, which stands out in the open valley. The temple is not very large and the buildings are relatively new. I took a brief look around and found the first restroom on the route here [Sob]. · After Wuji Dragon and Phoenix Palace, the road conditions improved significantly. At the scenic area entrance fork, staff checked vehicles and registered visitors. After that, the phone signal disappeared. · Yuxu Peak viewpoint: After driving more than an hour inside the scenic area, you reach the Yuxu Peak viewpoint. You need to drive a short distance on an unpaved road to reach the viewing platform. · Queen Mother of the West’s Jade Pool: Going deeper, I finally arrived at the Jade Pool. The weather was not great that day—overcast and windy, with a low perceived temperature, so I wore all my warm clothes. At the end point, besides the large “Queen Mother of the West’s Jade Pool” sign, there was a big peach sculpture, though the craftsmanship was a bit rough, haha. · If time allows, on the return trip you can visit the Jiesang Sonam Daje Martyrs Memorial at the Kunlun mountain pass. The entire road into the scenic area is excellent, with no heavy trucks, and the environment inside is pristine. This time, I also saw several kinds of wild animals (see attached photos). This is a must-do deep Kunlun experience when visiting Golmud.

01 Anyang | Henan At 4:30 AM, I stood on the Peach Blossom Valley boardwalk in the Taihang Grand Canyon. The mountain wind carried moisture to my face, chilling me to the bone. If you come to Taihang Mountain to escape the heat in summer, be sure to bring long sleeves because the temperature difference between morning and night feels like a change of season. When the sun is strong at noon, hiding by the water at the valley bottom, the creek is so cold it numbs your toes, and sitting in the shade for an hour makes you not want to move. ⚠️ Avoid visiting the main scenic area on weekend mornings. Tourist buses keep arriving, and the boardwalk is so narrow you can only pass sideways. Get up early and catch the first shuttle bus; the whole canyon will be yours. It’s cooler visiting Yinxu in the afternoon. The museum’s air conditioning is strong, and the bronze exhibition hall is dimly lit, like stepping into another era. 📍 At the oracle bone pit ruins of the Yinxu palace and ancestral temple site, standing on the glass floor looking down at the inscribed bone fragments makes you wonder how people 3,000 years ago survived the summer. 🍜 In the city’s alleys, find a bowl of flat rice noodles with plenty of chili. Sweating it out is better than air conditioning for cooling down. 02 Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture | Hubei At Yunlong Rift in Enshi Grand Canyon, halfway through the walk, mist rises from the abyss below, limiting visibility to about 10 meters. Reaching out, your hand touches damp coolness. I descended to the valley bottom at 2 PM. Sunlight was sliced into a narrow beam by the cliffs, shining on the stalagmites, and the air smelled of moss and earth. ⚠️ The rift has over 3,000 steps round trip. If your knees aren’t strong, I recommend only going halfway. The climb back up is so tough your face turns pale as paper. The next day, switch to Shennong Stream and take an old wooden pea pod boat. The boatman poles you along while cicadas’ calls are drowned out by water sounds. The breeze from the river is so cool you’ll want to put on a jacket. Enshi Tusi City is better visited in the evening. The nine-entry wooden buildings glow caramel in the sunset, and light filters through carved window gaps, like a maze frozen in time. 📍 For the butterfly cliff boat tour on the Qingjiang River, choose the 3:30 PM trip. The sunlight shines from the east, and the mountain shadows reflect in the water like shattered jade. 03 Aksu Prefecture | Xinjiang At the entrance to the mysterious Tianshan Grand Canyon, a sign warns that the temperature peaks between 2 and 4 PM. The smart move is to enter at 9 AM when sunlight slants in from the east, lighting the reddish-brown rock walls like they’re on fire, with long shadows. The narrowest part of the canyon only fits one person sideways. Water drips from cracks above, chilling your neck. At noon, don’t tough it out inside the canyon. Step out, find shade under a tree, eat some naan, and sip cold yogurt. Locals say the real experts enter after 5 PM when the sunlight softens, the rock walls shift from orange-red to dark purple, and the breeze cools down. ⚠️ There’s no shade in the canyon. Reapply sunscreen every 30 minutes or risk severe sunburn. 04 Guangyuan | Sichuan I regretted climbing the bird trail at Jianmen Pass. Holding onto the iron chains along the cliff edge, the wind blew up from below, making my calves tremble. But it was truly cool. The Baolong Mountain viewing platform halfway up, at under 1,000 meters elevation, has such thick shade it feels like a green tent. Sitting still on the rocks, you can feel the cool air. 📍 The ancient plank road in front of the pass tower is best visited at 4 PM when sunlight hits from behind, outlining the tower in gold. Skip the long line for the zipline—it’s expensive and dull. Instead, walk to the end and find an old restaurant in Jianmen Town. Order the Jianmen tofu feast. The tofu cooked with Sichuan pepper and broad bean paste is mildly numbing and spicy. You’ll sweat, and the mountain breeze will leave you feeling refreshed. 05 Yueyang | Hunan The secret to summer at Yueyang Tower is to visit at dusk. After 5:30 PM, mist from Dongting Lake rolls over the tower, filling the air with the scent of water and grass. From the third floor looking west, the lake glistens like scattered gold, and Junshan Island appears as a blue ink spot floating on the water. ⏰ Be sure to climb the tower at least half an hour before sunset. The light at that moment turns the glazed tiles honey-colored. After watching the sunset, walk around the Dongting Lake embankment. The wind is strong enough to push you off balance, and boats bob on the waves. 📍 Junshan Island’s spotted bamboo garden is incredibly shady. The bamboo leaves block the sky, and the ground is damp. But the island’s farm stays cost twice as much as the city. For meals, head back to the old street near Yueyang Tower. 🍜 Try “Chen Da Guo” restaurant. Their fish soup with perilla and green chili warms you from your stomach to your back. 06 Tonghua | Jilin The rapeseed flower sea in Ji’an is in full bloom in July. At 6:30 AM, dew still clings to the petals, and the sun has just risen over the mountain, lighting the valley brightly. Walking along the ridges, the air is filled with the sweet and earthy scent of rapeseed flowers. ⚠️ Mosquitoes in the flower sea are fierce and twice the size of city mosquitoes. Use insect repellent or you’ll have 20 new bites on your legs in 10 minutes. After the flowers, visit the Goguryeo relics. The stone steps in front of the general’s tomb are bleached by the sun, but inside the tomb, the stone walls are as cold as a cellar. Few tourists come here, so you might have the whole site to yourself. The wind rustling through the grass lets you hear your own footsteps echo. 🚄 It takes about 1.5 hours by bus from Tonghua city to Ji’an. Tickets cost around 20 yuan. The scenery along the Yalu River is spectacular. 07 Weihai | Shandong How strong is the sea breeze at Chengshantou? Standing on the cliff at the edge of the world, my hair was blown into an upside-down umbrella. I almost thought I’d be blown into the sea. The temperature here is at least 5 degrees cooler than Weihai city, only about 23 degrees at noon. The sea is a clean gray-blue, not as bright as Sanya’s blue, but paired with cliffs and green cypress trees, it feels crisp and refreshing. 📍 I recommend walking the two-kilometer coastal boardwalk to Shihuang Temple. Along the way, you can find small sea snails in the rock crevices. ⚠️ Don’t buy the so-called “sea cucumbers” sold by roadside vendors. They’re all processed fakes. The “Shen You Huaxia” live show at Huaxia City is best at night. Lights reflect on the water, and the sea breeze blows from the ocean. Watching for an hour won’t feel cold. Catch the early boat to Liugong Island before 9 AM to see flocks of seagulls taking off from the eastern battery. 08 Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai At the Kunlun Mountain pass, the snow line is still clear at the end of July. Wearing a windbreaker, I stood at 4,768 meters elevation. The wind blowing off the glacier chilled me to the bone. It’s a completely different world from the valley below. 📍 I don’t recommend staying long at Kunlun pass. The scenery is best seen from the road. The highlight is Chaka Salt Lake, just an hour’s drive from Golmud. The salt crust is hard underfoot, and the water is shallow, only ankle-deep. Walking in, the surface reflects white salt crystals and blue sky so brightly it hurts your eyes. ⚠️ UV rays at the salt lake are extremely strong. Sunglasses are a must or your eyes will hurt after 30 minutes. Jade Lake and Chaka Salt Lake have different styles. Chaka is the classic mirror lake, while Jade Lake has varying shades of green, like a spilled paint palette. ⏰ The best time to photograph Chaka Salt Lake is 8–10 AM or after 6 PM. Midday’s bright sky makes photos look gray and dull. There’s no direct transport between these lakes. You’ll need to charter a car or rent a vehicle. A day trip costs about 300 yuan for fuel and tolls. These 8 places offer completely different climates and experiences. In July, I basically became a legend in Golmud🔥🔥🔥 Honestly, before coming, my impression of Golmud was just a "transit stop to Tibet," but this place completely shattered my prejudice—it’s clearly the seriously underrated luxury wilderness hotspot in Northwest China!! 🏔️ Let’s start with the must-know about transportation By 2026, flights to Golmud have increased a lot compared to previous years, with direct flights from Chengdu, Xi’an, and Xining. Tickets during the summer peak season range from about 1,200 to 1,800 CNY. For trains, the Qinghai-Tibet line passes through Golmud station. It takes about 5.5 hours by high-speed train from Xining, with a second-class seat costing 174.5 CNY💰. ⚠️ But! The distances between Golmud’s attractions are huge! Renting a car in the city costs about 280–400 CNY per day. An SUV is recommended since some roads have lots of gravel. 👉 If you don’t want to drive, you can hire a car with a driver. A 7-seat van costs 800–1,200 CNY per day. The driver also acts as a part-time guide, so it’s hassle-free. 📍 I found a gem for lodging ⛰️ The guesthouse is in Golmud’s Hexi New District, a 10-minute drive from the train station. There’s a supermarket nearby for easy supplies. ⛰️ The entire wall is a floor-to-ceiling window facing the distant Kunlun Mountains. Pulling back the curtains in the morning, the snowy peaks hit you right in the face. That shock lasted for three seconds. ⛰️ The room has a huge terrace with outdoor sofas and a small fire pit🔥. At night, wrapped in a blanket watching the Milky Way, the stars are so dense they almost trigger trypophobia✨. Honestly, Golmud’s temperature swings are wild. In July, it can be 28°C during the day and drop below 10°C at night. This terrace and fire pit setup is a godsend—I spent three nights sitting outside, not wanting to go in. 💎 Day 1: Chaerhan Salt Lake—imagine 56 times the size of Chaka Salt Lake Tickets plus shuttle bus cost 100 CNY total (2026 peak price). Open from 8 AM to 8 PM in July. Plan 3–4 hours for the visit. It’s a 1-hour drive from downtown. After boarding the park shuttle, I was stunned— The lake water is fluorescent green!! Not photoshopped, but a natural bright green apple color🍏, paired with the endless white salt crust and the clear snow line of the Kunlun Mountains in the distance. 🔑 A few photo tips that really work: ① Definitely bring a drone! You can fly it after registering at the shuttle bus start point. The aerial shots are the real masterpieces. ② Don’t go crazy taking photos at the first viewing platform. The deeper you go, the purer the colors and fewer the people. ③ Sunglasses are a must!! The salt flats’ glare is so intense it’s hard to keep your eyes open. ④ Wear solid colors! White or red dresses look great. Avoid floral patterns. Don’t forget to check out the Wan Zhang Salt Bridge! It’s on National Highway 215, a 32-km natural salt road floating on the lake. There are no guardrails or bridge supports. Driving on it feels surreal. 💎 Day 2: Water Yadan—the place on Earth that looks most like Mars Tickets are 60 CNY plus 60 CNY for the shuttle bus during peak season (May–October). The shuttle is recommended since the main viewpoint, Wanghaitai, is 5 km one way, and walking would be exhausting. It’s a 3+ hour drive from Golmud city via National Highway G315. Along the way, you’ll pass the famous U-shaped road photo spot, which you can stop at. Once there, I declare—this! Is! The! Most! Mind-blowing! Sight! I! Have! Seen! In! 2026! Bright blue lake water with clusters of yellowish Yadan hills rising from it, densely packed like a fleet anchored on the water. Locals call it the "West Sea Fleet," and that’s no exaggeration. 🔑 How to enjoy it: ① Sunset at the golden sandy beach is unbeatable! The evening light on the water, Yadan silhouettes, and fiery clouds made me almost cry. ② The cliffside Yadan area has the fewest people, so no waiting for photos. ③ The park is swarming with mosquitoes! Long pants, long sleeves, and mosquito repellent are essential—learned the hard way. ④ If you have a drone, fly it! From the ground, you only see part of it. Flying reveals how spectacular it really is. 💎 Day 3: Kunlun Mountain Pass + Wuji Longfeng Palace Drive south along National Highway G109, climbing to the 4,768 m Kunlun Mountain Pass. In July, the wind at the pass is strong enough to blow you sideways. A windbreaker is a must! Prayer flags flap in the wind, and the glaciers on Yuzhu Peak shimmer blue in the distance. The feeling is both desolate and sacred, leaving you speechless. On the way back, stop by Wuji Longfeng Palace. This Taoist temple built in the Kunlun Mountains has a mysterious vibe. Legend says the Queen Mother of the West’s territory is around here. ⚠️ Golmud travel tips to avoid pitfalls: 🔸 Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Sunscreen! At 2,800+ meters, UV rays are no joke. Use SPF 50+ and reapply every 2 hours. 🔸 Altitude sickness risk isn’t high but don’t take chances. Avoid strenuous exercise and bathing on the first day. Drink plenty of water. 🔸 Supplies in the city are convenient. Buy extra water and snacks before heading to attractions, where prices start at triple. 🔸 July is the best travel season for Golmud but also peak season. Book lodging at least two weeks in advance. 🔸 Golmud city is at 2,780 m, so most people won’t feel much. But at Kunlun Pass over 4,700 m, it’s unpredictable. Bring glucose oral solution just in case. Honestly, before going to Golmud, I thought "it’s just okay." After going, I just want to say—Northwest China, I owe you a serious encounter.
