Qumarleb County travel guide and discussion

Sisters! When you go to Qinghai, don’t just focus on the salt lakes and Chaka‼️ This time I went all in, flooring it into the Hoh Xil no-man’s land— a world natural heritage site, one of China’s largest uninhabited areas, known as the “forbidden zone of life.” What happened? I cried😭 Not from fear, but moved to tears! 📍 Where is Hoh Xil? Yushu Prefecture, Qinghai Province. About 200 km south from Golmud along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway (G109). The core area is near the Sonam Dargye protection station. 🚗 How to get there? ⚠️ Important reminder: Hoh Xil is not a tourist attraction! No tickets are required, but you must respect nature. Self-drive: Golmud → Kunlun Pass → Budo Spring → Sonam Dargye protection station → Tuotuo River. The entire route is paved, but altitude rises from 2,800 m to 4,600 m, so be sure to prevent altitude sickness. Charter/shared ride: Local travel agencies in Golmud offer one- or two-day tours to Hoh Xil, priced at 800–1,500 CNY per person. Drivers know the roads and can act as guides. Don’t hike on your own: This is no joke. No signal, wild animals, extreme weather— even locals don’t dare. 📅 Best time: June–August (weather is relatively stable, Tibetan antelope calving season, you can see lambs running with their mothers) 📸 Highlights & photo tips 1️⃣ Tibetan antelope 🦌 Near Sonam Dargye protection station, easiest to spot between 5–7 PM. Remember: stay quiet, don’t get out to chase! Use a telephoto lens (phone cameras won’t cut it, renting a camera is recommended). Seeing their white rumps as they run is super heartwarming💖 2️⃣ Kunlun Pass 🏔️ At 4,767 m altitude, surrounded by endless snow-capped mountains and fluttering prayer flags. You can stop here to take photos, but it’s windy and cold, so wear a windbreaker. 3️⃣ Budo Spring 💧 A magical spring that never freezes. Water temperature stays near 0°C year-round but never freezes. The ice-blue spring water against the snowy background is stunning. 4️⃣ Hoh Xil snow mountains and wilderness The overwhelming vastness can’t be captured even one-thousandth by a phone. Use a wide-angle lens, crouch low, and frame the sky, road, and wilderness together with a caption like “No one is here, yet life thrives.” ⚠️ Survival guide (key points!) Altitude sickness: Take Rhodiola 2 days in advance, bring oxygen, avoid bathing and strenuous activity. Clothing: Down jacket + windproof outerwear. It can snow even in summer❄️ Food: Self-heating rice, chocolate, hot water. No convenience stores along the way. Toilets: None! Use a cloth for privacy in the wild... Phone signal: Basically none once you enter the mountains. Download offline maps in advance. Don’t litter: Every plastic bag could be mistaken for food by Tibetan antelopes and cause death. 💡 Why strongly recommend? Because this is not a tourist spot, it’s the last pure land on earth. When your eyes meet those of a Tibetan antelope, you’ll understand what “life” really means. No commercial noise, only wind, snow mountains, and freedom. It’s not for enjoyment, it’s for reverence. Before you go, watch the movie Hoh Xil to better understand the weight of this land. After you go, remember to share your story with me—I’ll be waiting in the comments✨

When it comes to the Kunlun Mountains, most people have heard of its legends. The Kunlun World Geopark is located in the heartland of this "Ancestor of Ten Thousand Mountains." Stretching across western Qinghai, it combines majestic mountains, glaciers, canyons, and ancient landforms. It boasts magnificent natural scenery sculpted over billions of years and countless mythological tales. Stepping here, you can understand the unique grandeur and mystery of Kunlun. The park is situated south of Golmud City, built around the main Kunlun mountain range, with an average altitude exceeding 4,000 meters. It is a representative geological secret on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Over billions of years, tectonic movements, glacial erosion, and weathering have created richly layered geological landscapes. As a world-class geopark, it preserves the geological traces of plateau uplift and glacier evolution intact and serves as a natural classroom for studying the geomorphological changes of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Far from urban noise, the endless mountain ranges and vast, desolate skies fully display the bold spirit of the western mountains. The entire park is full of highlights, with every scene unforgettable. The Kunlun Mountain Pass is a must-visit, marked by towering stone monuments and sculptures. Standing here, you can gaze at the overlapping mountain ranges stretching into the distance with an incredibly broad view. The famous Nachitai Spring flows year-round, its water clear and sweet, forming a lively pool in this cold region, especially vibrant. Further inside, the Kunlun Grand Canyon is steep and rugged, with colorful rock walls and a deep, narrow gorge. Walking through it, you can feel the power of nature’s craftsmanship. The majestic Yuzhu Peak is covered with snow and ice all year, its snowy summit piercing the clouds. The white snow contrasts with the deep blue sky, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Along the way, you can also see uniquely shaped strange rocks and glacial erosion landforms, with every step revealing the unique charm of geological wonders. Kunlun Mountain has been a cultural sanctuary since ancient times, where mythology and humanity intertwine. It has been revered as "China’s First Sacred Mountain" from ancient times to the present. Legends such as the Queen Mother’s Jade Pool and the immortal cultivation realm have been passed down through generations, casting a romantic and mysterious aura over the mountains. It is also an important section of the ancient Silk Road and the Qiangzhong Road, where caravans and travelers once passed, leaving a long historical imprint. The local ethnic groups living nearby hold deep reverence for Kunlun Mountain, and the sacred mountain belief is integrated into daily life, adding a warm cultural layer to this vast land. Finally, here are some practical travel tips. The best time to visit is from June to September when the temperature is suitable and roads are accessible. The park is at high altitude, so be sure to prepare for altitude sickness and avoid strenuous activities. The plateau has strong UV rays and large temperature differences between day and night, so sunscreen hats, sunglasses, and windproof thick jackets are essential. The scenic area is vast with widely spaced attractions, so self-driving or joining an official tour group is recommended. Please protect nature throughout your visit by not littering and preserving this pristine landscape. Dominating the plateau, Kunlun Mountain offers magnificent rivers and mountains and flowing myths. Enter Kunlun World Geopark, feel the vastness of heaven and earth at the foot of the sacred mountain, encounter natural wonders and millennia-old culture, and gain an unforgettable plateau journey.

I'm not going to Delingha anymore!! I want to go further, to Kekexili where Duojie patrolled his whole life, to Dunhuang where Baiju never went, to the Qinghai-Gansu loop that my camera never finished shooting. 🌲|Chasing the roots of the "Tree of Life," I traveled 3,000 kilometers No turning back, no rushing. I just want to hear the crack once on the blue ice of Qinghai Lake, wait outside Sonam Dargye Station for a herd of Tibetan antelopes to cross the road, and be a person carved by the wind at the sunset of the colorful Danxia. 🚩8 days, a journey about taking root Day 1: Xining—Riyue Mountain—Qinghai Lake—Chaka Town [Stay] Day 2: Chaka Salt Lake—Chaerhan Salt Lake—Golmud [Stay] Day 3: Golmud—Kunlun Mountain Pass—Kekexili Viewing Platform—Sonam Dargye Protection Station—Golmud [Stay] Day 4: Golmud—315 U-shaped Highway—Water Yadan—Emerald Lake—Dachaidan [Stay] Day 5: Dachaidan—Nanbaxian Yadan Landform—Heidushan—Dunhuang [Stay] Day 6: Morning at Mogao Caves—Mingsha Mountain Crescent Spring—Dunhuang [Stay] city center Day 7: Dunhuang—Jiayuguan—Zhangye Danxia Landform—Zhangye City [Stay] Day 8: Zhangye—Bianduxia—Qilian Grassland—Distant view of Gangshika Snow Mountain—End in Xining. 📌 Traveling in Qinghai, you only understand in the off-season: · The mirror surface of Chaka Salt Lake has no footprints, only you and the snowy mountains in the reflection · No queues at Emerald Lake, you can have the entire turquoise mine to yourself · Volunteers at Sonam Dargye Station are not busy and will tell you the migration map of Tibetan antelopes, their eyes welling up as they speak 🎞️| In the drama, someone asked Duojie: "Kekexili has nothing, why do you still guard it?" Duojie pointed to the Tibetan antelopes grazing in the distance: "If they are here, so am I." From Qinghai Lake to Dunhuang, from Kunlun Mountains to Qilian Mountains. Gradually understanding— The Tree of Life does not grow in lush, fertile places. It grows in permafrost zones, in the crevices of wind-eroded Yadan, in the worn boots of mountain patrol members, in the hearts of everyone who leaves Qinghai but keeps looking back. Not all roots must be planted in hometowns. Some roots, planted in oxygen-poor heights, can still grow into someone else's tree. · 🚘【Northwest Transportation Guide】 ✈️Major transport: Fly to Xining Caojiabao Airport / Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport 🚗Local transport: Self-driving recommended with car pick-up at Xining/Dunhuang stores 🚌Public transport: Attractions are too scattered! Strongly recommend carpooling/private car🚙 🌟【Qinghai-Gansu Travel "Avoid" List】 ❌Don't join low-price tours, too many traps to cry over😭 ❌Only buy A-class tickets for Mogao Caves! B-class tickets cover only 4 caves and no time selection⏳ ❌Sun protection is a must! Physical sunscreen > chemical sunscreen, hat + arm sleeves are the ultimate combo🧢 ❌Respect local customs! No bare shoulders or legs in temples🙏 ❌Book accommodation in advance! Last-minute bookings cost twice as much💸 🌟【Qinghai-Gansu Travel "Must-Do" List】 ✅Altitude caution: Qinghai Lake is 3,200 meters above sea level, avoid running or jumping! Altitude sickness risk🏔️ ✅Time difference reminder: Northwest gets dark late, you can slightly delay your schedule🌄 ✅Best photo times: Soft light in early morning and evening, high chance of great shots📷 ✅Food exploration: Lamb hot pot, old yogurt, sweet fermented barley… foodies don’t miss out · ✅ Accommodation Recommendations 1️⃣ Xining/Haizhu New District: Rich nightlife, design hotels with great photo opportunities (suitable for those with a good budget) 2️⃣ Delingha: Must-pass on popular routes, accommodations tight in peak season, book early 3️⃣ Dunhuang/Shazhou Night Market: The choice for artsy youth, hutong homestays to experience Northwest charm 4️⃣ Zhangye City: Convenient transport, close to Zhangye West Station and night market, many nearby attractions 5️⃣ Scenic area exits: Commercial atmosphere strong, good for browsing but shop carefully ·

Qinghai | You Must Visit Hoh Xil Once in Your Life Hoh Xil, means "green mountain ridge" or "beautiful girl" in Mongolian, and "desolate land under the northern Kunlun Mountains" in Tibetan. It is a forbidden zone for humans and a paradise for wild animals. · ————— I downloaded the movie "Kekexili: Mountain Patrol" directed by Lu Chuan to watch on the plane before I left. The movie says, "The story of Hoh Xil is hard to tell, only those who have really been there can understand." The movie is based on the true story of Sonam Dargye. This is heaven, hell, a pure land, and a place to witness life and faith. The last primitive wilderness in China, this is the last habitat of Tibetan antelopes. This is the wilderness, but not barren. Every alpine meadow interprets the power of life. · ————— The original plan was to spend two days there, but it was still early and the weather was good, so I went straight to the Jade Pool of the Queen Mother of the West after returning to the Wuji Dragon and Phoenix Palace. I was very lucky along the way, from continuous rain to bright sunshine, snow-capped mountains, jade pool, alpine meadows, I saw Tibetan wild donkeys, Tibetan gazelles, Tibetan antelopes, wild yaks, and marmots. I didn't see the "egg yolk pie internet celebrity wolf" but took a photo with the "wolf friend" (see the picture later). The local driver was familiar with the road conditions and drove well, and we left the reserve safely before dark. · ————— Travel method: chartered car Departure: near Golmud Railway Station Departure time: 8:30 Return time: 20:30 Travel preparation: 1️⃣ I ate rhodiola and oxygen supplements for half a month, and didn't take a shower or wash my hair the day before. 2️⃣ I prepared 2 bottles of oxygen (I felt a headache and head swelling when the altitude was over 4,500 meters, and I used up both bottles). 3️⃣ ID card (ID card security check is required to enter and leave the reserve). 4️⃣ Keep warm and protect yourself from the sun, wear a hat and a jacket. Chartered car itinerary: Golmud ➡️ Kunlun Holy Spring (with a water toilet) ➡️ Wuji Dragon and Phoenix Palace (there are two destinations here, Route A is Sonam Dargye Protection Station, Route B is the Jade Pool of the Queen Mother of the West). Route A: Yuzhu Peak Viewing Platform (it snowed on the night of September 9, and the snow was particularly shocking) ➡️ Kunlun Pass (altitude: 4,768 meters, the breathtaking beauty, there are two wolf-like dogs and a Samoyed outside the platform, which are said to have grown up with humans and dogs, and you can pet them and take photos with them for a fee) ➡️ Yuxu Peak Viewing Platform ➡️ Hoh Xil Sonam Dargye Protection Station (the driver said the protection station was under repair and could not be visited, so I returned at Kunlun Pass) Route B: ➡️ Jade Pool Grassland (the most beautiful scenery is on the road) ➡️ Jade Pool of the Queen Mother of the West (not stunning, but it led me to the most beautiful no man's land)

Perfect for budget travel in Sept–Oct, the weather is mild, crowds are thin, and prices are low. I've screened these 8 places for you. 01 Ma'anshan | Anhui I didn't have high expectations for Caishiji, but I ended up spending half an hour just enjoying the breeze on the riverside boardwalk. The river breeze in Sept–Oct isn't sticky or cold—it's just right. ⏰ It's most comfortable to enter the scenic area after 4:30 PM, when the light hits the cliffs at an angle, making photos look great without filters. 📍 Enter from the East Gate and follow the route: Taibai Tower — Sanyuan Cave — Riverside Boardwalk. Two hours is enough. 🚄 A taxi from Ma'anshan East Station costs about 25 yuan. Buses are available, but the wait is long. ⚠️ Don't eat river fish at the restaurants near the entrance; they're overpriced. It's more practical to go back to the city for a bowl of Dangtu meat noodles. Great for students and solo travelers. Tickets are affordable, and you can see everything in half a day. Mosquitoes by the river are still quite fierce in September, so long pants are a safer bet than shorts. 02 Weifang | Shandong Qingzhou Ancient City was an unexpected surprise on this trip. There's no general admission fee, and you can wander freely—much more honest than many other ancient cities. Go to Ouyuan Street at 7 AM, just as the locals are setting up their breakfast stalls. 🍜 Buy "Mishandao" (honey-glazed pastries) from Longsheng and eat them while they're warm; they get hard when cold. 📍 Enter from Fucai Gate, walk all the way to Ouyuan Garden, then turn onto Mosque Street—it's a direct route. ⚠️ Don't go into the shops with "influencer check-in" signs on the main street. Walk two alleys deeper, and the prices are cut in half. In Sept–Oct, the osmanthus flowers in the ancient city are in bloom, and you'll smell them as you walk. Great for a slow stroll with parents; it's all flat ground, and you can sit down whenever you're tired. Choose accommodation on the outskirts of the ancient city; it's cheaper and quieter than staying inside. 03 Hengyang | Hunan Visiting Mt. Heng in Sept–Oct is the most cost-effective time of the year. The summer crowds have faded, and the summit isn't cold enough to require renting a heavy coat. ⏰ If you want to see the sunrise, start climbing at 10 PM to arrive at Zhurong Peak around 5 AM—just in time. If you're not a strong hiker, take the eco-bus to Nantianmen and walk the rest of the way to save two hours. 📍 The Nanyue Grand Temple is at the foot of the mountain; visit it the day after your hike so your legs won't be as shaky. ⚠️ Don't buy incense at the foot of the mountain; there's a free incense distribution point at the entrance of the Grand Temple. 🍜 After coming down the mountain, go to Nanyue Town for a bowl of rice noodles with Hengyang braised toppings for just over 10 yuan. Suitable for hiking enthusiasts, as well as those who just want to take a bus to the top to see the clouds—there's something for every budget. 04 Yushu | Qinghai Sept–Oct is the final window for Hoh Xil and Sanjiangyuan. Any later, and the roads become difficult to travel. 📍 Start from Yushu city, take the 215 National Highway towards Qumalai, and you can see Tibetan antelopes along the way. ⏰ Leave in the morning and head back by 3 PM; there are no lights on the road after dark. ⚠️ The altitude is over 4,500 meters, so don't jump or run. If you get a headache, use oxygen—don't try to tough it out. 🚄 Yushu has an airport, but for budget travel, I recommend taking a bus from Xining. It's half the price, though it takes longer. The grass is already yellow by late September, which looks even better against the snow-capped mountains. Suitable for those with high-altitude experience; if it's your first time, spend two days in Xining to acclimate first. 05 Hulunbuir | Inner Mongolia In mid-to-late September, the Hulunbuir grasslands turn from green to gold, offering more depth than in summer. The key is that accommodation prices are slashed in half. 📍 Start from Hailar and take the route through Ergun, Enhe, and Shiwei. A five-day chartered car trip costs just over 1,000 yuan per person. ⏰ The light at 4 PM is best for photos; any stop on the grassland makes for a great view. 🍜 In Enhe, try Russian-style bread with blueberry jam; in Shiwei, try the hand-grabbed meat. Don't eat at the entrance of scenic spots—walk into the village instead. ⚠️ It's already freezing (0°C) at night in late September, so a down jacket is a must. Suitable for carpooling with a few friends; chartering a car alone is too expensive. Self-driving is also an option, but don't drive off the road—the grass might be hiding marshy ground. 06 Hezhou | Guangxi Gupo Mountain, Huangyao Ancient Town, and Dongtanling—these three spots form a perfect line, and Sept–Oct is just right to avoid the muggy heat of Guangxi. 📍 Day 1: Gupo Mountain. The waterfalls still have plenty of water. Take the Xian'gu Waterfall route; it's a three-hour round trip. Day 2: Huangyao Ancient Town. Enter the town before 7 AM to avoid the ticket fee. ⏰ At this hour, there are only cleaners and art students sketching. 🍜 Huangyao's fermented bean curd noodles and stuffed tofu are better at street stalls than in restaurants. Day 3: Dongtanling for sunrise. 📍 Navigate to the Dongtanling Viewing Platform. The mountain roads are narrow, so beginners shouldn't drive themselves. ⚠️ Accommodation inside Huangyao is expensive and damp. Stay at a guesthouse a 10-minute walk outside the town; it's cheaper and drier. Suitable for those who love ancient towns but dislike crowds; there are few tourists in September, so you can explore in peace. 07 Lianyungang | Jiangsu Huaguoshan and Lian Island—one for hiking, one for the sea. In Sept–Oct, the seawater isn't too cold yet, so it's fine to wade in. ⏰ Enter Huaguoshan at 7:30 AM, take the scenic shuttle to the Water Curtain Cave, then hike to Yunu Peak. The whole trip takes four hours. 📍 The rocks around the Water Curtain Cave are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. In the afternoon, go to Lian Island. 📍 Dashawan Beach is crowded, so head towards Sumawan—it's less crowded and the water is clearer. 🚄 You can get there by BRT from the city, but I recommend taking a taxi to Lian Island, as the bus takes too long. ⚠️ Ask for prices before ordering at seaside food stalls, especially for crab—there's a big difference between pricing by the piece versus by weight. Suitable for families; there are many monkeys at Huaguoshan, so don't carry plastic bags in your hands. 08 Bortala | Xinjiang Sayram Lake, Anjihai Grand Canyon, and Wenquan County—this route is so empty in Sept–Oct that you'll feel like you have the place to yourself. 📍 Enter Sayram Lake from the South Gate and circle the lake clockwise. ⏰ The light at 7 PM hits the lake, making it look impossibly blue. Go to Anjihai Grand Canyon in the afternoon; there are fewer shadows in the canyon, making for more three-dimensional photos. 🍜 In Wenquan County, eat cold-water fish; the small street-side shops are half the price of restaurants in scenic areas. ⚠️ Accommodation around Sayram Lake starts closing down in late September, so call ahead to confirm before you go. 🚄 There are trains to Bole, but carpooling from Urumqi is more flexible. Suitable for self-driving; public transport on this route is a hassle. It's below freezing at night in late September, so bring a sleeping bag or a thick quilt. You won't go wrong with any of these 8 places in Sept–Oct. If you want to save as much as possible, choose Ma'anshan, Weifang, or Hengyang. If you want to see grand scenery, choose Yushu, Hulunbuir, or Bortala. Which one are you planning to visit first?

Don't want to deal with Mid-Autumn Festival crowds? These 8 places are uncrowded and affordable 01 Changsha | Hunan Wuyi Square during the Mid-Autumn Festival is so crowded you can barely touch the ground. I suggest you go the opposite way. Get to Yuelu Mountain before 7:00 AM. The air is cool, the stone steps aren't in the sun, and you'll just break a light sweat by the time you reach the sightseeing corridor. 📍 There are stone benches under the old camphor tree at the entrance of Yuelu Academy. It's quiet for a rest, and you won't have to wait in line for photos. Tianxin Pavilion is best visited in the evening. Watch the sunset dye the entire old town a warm orange from the city walls. ⏰ The light is softest after 5:00 PM. Remember to book the Provincial Museum in advance via their official WeChat account. ⚠️ It's closed on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip. Huaminglou is a bit further away, so it's best to drive or take a taxi. It's a nice place to spend half a day wandering around. 🍜 After coming down the mountain, don't eat in the scenic area. Head to the back street of Hunan University for a bowl of beef rice noodles with a fried egg for just over ¥20. Changsha's spice is intense. If you can't handle it, remember to ask for no spice—don't push yourself. 02 Haixi | Qinghai Everyone crowds into Qinghai Lake, but I think this salt lake route is more worth it. The wind at Kunlun Pass is strong enough to blow your hat off. ⏰ The clouds are thin before 10:00 AM, making the snow mountain outlines clearest. Wear a thick jacket, not just a shell. The salt flowers at Qarhan Salt Lake look like broken glass covering the ground; they crunch when you step on them. Emerald Lake has layers of colors, ranging from green to blue. It actually looks better under the midday sun because the water is shallow and the reflections are clear. After 4:00 PM, when the tour groups leave Chaka Salt Lake, the "Mirror of the Sky" finally becomes peaceful. 🚄 I recommend chartering a car or driving yourself. Public transport is infrequent, and don't count on being able to hail a taxi on the spot. ⚠️ You'll be at an altitude of over 3,000 meters. Don't wash your hair or run around on the first day. If you get a headache, use oxygen—don't try to tough it out. For accommodation, choose Delingha or Dachaidan. The conditions are average, but they're close to the lakes. 03 Changzhi | Shanxi Baquan Gorge in the Taihang Mountains is what I'd call a great alternative to the "Little Jiuzhaigou" of the north. The water is a clear, cyan-green. ⏰ The water volume is highest the day after rain, and the sound of the waterfalls is deafening, but the steps are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. 📍 At the Baquan Gorge entrance, take the sightseeing bus to the pier, then transfer to a boat to enter the gorge. Don't get the order wrong, or you'll end up walking an extra two kilometers for nothing. The Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon is huge. You can only choose one section to walk in a day—pick either Hongdou Gorge or Qinglong Gorge, don't try to do both. 🍜 The rainbow trout at the farmhouses at the foot of the mountain is caught and grilled to order. It's sold by weight, so ask about the price before ordering. ⚠️ Around the Mid-Autumn Festival, the temperature difference between day and night in the mountains can be over 10 degrees. Bringing a light down jacket isn't an exaggeration. It's suitable for seniors, as there are cable cars and elevators the whole way—if they get tired, they can just ride. 04 Nanchong | Sichuan Langzhong Ancient Town is quieter than Lijiang and cheaper than Fenghuang. The bluestone roads are worn smooth and shiny. ⏰ Before 7:00 AM, the only people on the street are those sweeping and selling vinegar. That peace is worth the price of admission. 📍 Zhongtian Tower is the center of the ancient town. Climb up to see the sea of tiled roofs. Zhangfei Temple and the Examination Hall are right next to each other, so a joint ticket is a good deal. Don't hire unofficial guides; a rental audio guide for ¥10 is more reliable. 🍜 Baoning vinegar is a local specialty. You can get a vinegar foot soak on the street for ¥15 per session. It's great for tired feet—the sour smell is strong, but it really relieves fatigue. ⚠️ There are many inns in the ancient town. Choose one by the river to see the lights at night, but be aware that soundproofing can be poor—if you're a light sleeper, stay outside the town. Mid-Autumn Festival room rates are significantly lower than during National Day, so booking a week in advance is fine. It's perfect for a slow-paced trip—two days and one night is just right. 05 Laibin | Guangxi Not many people know about Panwangjie in the Dayao Mountains, so it's perfect for a Mid-Autumn trip. The mountains are layers upon layers of karst peaks. ⏰ In the early morning mist, it looks like an ink wash painting. When the sun comes out and the mist clears, it turns into a different shade of green. The boardwalk on Jinxiu Lotus Mountain is built along the cliff edge. It might make your legs weak, but the scenery is incredible. 📍 At the entrance to Panwangjie, there are Yao women selling oil tea for ¥5 a bowl. It's salty, fragrant, and slightly bitter—it warms you right up. 🍜 The bamboo rice and cured meat at the Yao restaurants at the foot of the mountain are half the price of those in the scenic area. 🚄 It takes about two hours to transfer from Laibin North Station to Jinxiu by bus. There aren't many departures, so leave early. ⚠️ Signal in the mountains is weak, so download offline maps in advance. It's great for hiking enthusiasts; seniors should stick to the flatter sections and not push themselves. 06 Tai'an | Shandong Night climbing Mount Tai during the Mid-Autumn Festival is a classic, but I suggest you do the opposite. Start from Hongmen during the day. ⏰ Leave at 3:00 PM, and you'll reach Zhongtian Gate just at dusk. The Eighteen Bends won't be in the sun, and there are half as many people as the night climb. 📍 The steps from Zhongtian Gate to Nantian Gate are steep. Rent a hiking stick for ¥5—don't skip this. After Nantian Gate, heading toward the Jade Emperor Peak, the wind is strong enough to knock you over, so bring a windbreaker. 🍜 After coming down the mountain, go to the old county office to have a bowl of Mount Tai tofu noodles. The soup is clear, the noodles are smooth, and it's a filling meal for ¥10. ⚠️ Bottled water at the summit is ¥8 each, so bring enough yourself. Book tickets in advance on the official platform, as there are visitor limits during holidays. It's suitable for people with average fitness—take the cable car up and down and save your energy for watching the clouds at the summit. 07 Wenshan | Yunnan Mid-Autumn Festival in Puzhehei is at the tail end of the lotus season. The lotus leaves are still green, and while there are fewer flowers, there are even fewer people. ⏰ Take a willow-leaf boat into the lake at 6:30 AM. The water is as flat as a mirror, reflecting the mountains—one stroke of the oar breaks the reflection. 📍 It's a 20-minute climb to the Qinglong Mountain viewing platform, where you can overlook the entire lake area and the village. It's most beautiful at sunset. 🍜 Stir-fried eggs with lotus leaves and stewed chicken with lotus seeds are local specialties. The farmhouses by the lake do them well, costing about ¥50 per person. 🚄 It takes about an hour and a half by high-speed train from Kunming to Puzhehei Station, then a 10-minute taxi ride to the scenic area. ⚠️ You might get into a water fight while boating, so put your phone in a waterproof bag and don't wear white shoes. It's great for couples and families—the rowing isn't strenuous, and kids love it. 08 Linxia | Gansu The water at Liujiaxia is a serene blue-green. ⏰ After 4:00 PM, when the sun hits it at an angle, the reservoir looks like a giant emerald. Take a boat to Bingling Temple. The boat ride takes an hour, with stone cliffs on both sides of the water, and the breeze is just right. The grottoes at the Bingling Temple World Cultural Heritage Tourist Area are carved into the cliff face. The boardwalk is narrow, so ⚠️ if you're afraid of heights, walk on the inside. 📍 The Tang Dynasty statues in Cave 169 are well-preserved. The guide will point them out to you, so don't just wander around on your own. 🍜 The hand-grabbed mutton and Hezhou steamed buns in downtown Linxia are cheaper and more authentic than in the scenic area—it's a 20-minute taxi ride away. 🚄 It takes about two hours by bus from Lanzhou to Linxia, making it perfect for a short weekend trip. There are few tourists during the Mid-Autumn Festival, so you can easily find accommodation. Of these eight places, I most recommend Changzhi and Laibin—one has great water, the other has quiet mountains. Pick one, and don't go squeezing into the crowds this Mid-Autumn Festival.

Want to avoid the National Day crowds? These 8 destinations are perfect for a 3-day trip 01 Changsha | Hunan If you're heading to Changsha for National Day, don't just stick to Wuyi Square. I suggest splitting your three days into "one day on the West Bank, one day on the East Bank, and half a day in the south of the city." ⏰ 7:30 AM: Head up Yuelu Mountain. Enter from the East Gate; it's less crowded and the mist hasn't cleared yet. It takes exactly an hour to reach the top. On the way down, visit the Hunan Museum—remember to book three days in advance, and note that it's closed on Mondays. 📍 Tianxin Pavilion is best in the evening. Climb up to see the old city walls and the sunset. Tickets are affordable, and half an hour is enough. In the evening, grab a bowl of shredded pork rice noodles at Nanmenkou and add a tiger skin egg—it's more authentic than the viral spots. ⚠️ Huaminglou is in Ningxiang, far from the city center. It takes two hours by intercity train and bus. If you only have three days, I recommend skipping it and saving that time for Orange Island and Chaozong Street. Changsha is for savoring, not rushing. 02 Gannan | Gansu In Gannan during National Day, the grass has turned yellow, but the sky is incredibly blue. One night in Zhagana is enough—don't try to do too much. ⏰ 6:30 AM: Head to the Dari Viewing Platform to watch the sunrise turn the stone city golden. The local guesthouses are basic, so bring a sleeping bag liner for extra comfort. 📍 Langmusi Temple spans both Sichuan and Gansu; the Gansu side offers better panoramic views. In the afternoon, head to Gahai Lake. It's very windy, so bring a windbreaker to keep your hat from blowing away. ⚠️ Yeliguan is far away with average road conditions; don't force the trip if it's raining. Gannan is at an altitude of about 3,000 meters, so avoid showering or strenuous exercise on the first day. This destination is for those who don't mind roughing it and want to see grasslands and snow-capped mountains—not for families with kids or those looking to rush through attractions. 03 Ganzhou | Jiangxi Ganzhou is one of those places you think won't be much, but end up loving. Shicheng and Sanbai Mountain offer autumn scenery and hot springs, respectively. ⏰ Enter Tongtianzhai in Shicheng before 8:00 AM for the best light hitting the Danxia rock walls. The October rice fields are golden and look great in photos without filters. 📍 The glass bridge and hot springs at Sanbai Mountain are separate; the hot springs are up on the mountain, accessible by shuttle bus. After soaking in the hot springs in the afternoon, stay at a local guesthouse at the foot of the mountain and enjoy a plate of Hakka stuffed tofu. ⚠️ It's over a two-hour drive between Shicheng and Sanbai Mountain, so I recommend renting a car or hiring a driver. Public transport is infrequent and can be frustrating. This is for travelers who enjoy peace and quiet and don't mind a bit of travel. 04 Haixi | Qinghai The Haixi route is perfect for National Day, but don't try to do it all in one day. Kunlun Mountain, Qarhan, Emerald Lake, and Chaka are all spread out. ⏰ Visit Qarhan Salt Lake in the morning for flat light, which makes the salt flowers easier to see. Emerald Lake is most vibrant after 3:00 PM, looking like an overturned palette of paint. 📍 Wear shoe covers at Chaka Salt Lake, or your feet will get pricked. The line for the small train is long, and it only takes 20 minutes to walk in. It's windy at Kunlun Pass, and the altitude is 4,700 meters, so don't jump around. ⚠️ These spots are often 200–300 kilometers apart, so hiring a car or driving yourself is the only option. Staying in Golmud is most convenient, but hotel prices double during National Day, so book in advance. This trip is for those who can handle long car rides and don't mind dry weather. 05 Xing'an League | Inner Mongolia For Xing'an League, I'll only mention one place: Arxan. National Day is the best time of year to visit Arxan. ⏰ Enter Arxan National Forest Park at 7:00 AM. Head to Camel Peak Heaven Lake first; it's a 40-minute climb with steep stairs, so wear non-slip shoes. In the afternoon, visit Azalea Lake, where the birch forest reflects on the water in golden hues. 📍 The Unfrozen River is outside the park and free to visit; go in the evening to photograph the cattle and sheep crossing the river. Return to the city in the evening to soak in the hot springs and soothe your tired legs. ⚠️ Food in the park is expensive and not great, so bring your own snacks. Temperatures in Arxan approach zero at night during National Day, so a down jacket is a must. This is for photography enthusiasts and those looking to escape the crowds—not for those who can't stand the cold. 06 Chongzuo | Guangxi Chongzuo is hot during National Day, but it's worth it. Detian Waterfall and Mingshi Scenic Area are perfect for a two-day trip. ⏰ Arrive at Detian Waterfall before 10:00 AM. The water volume is high, and you can see rainbows in the mist when the sun hits it. If you take a bamboo raft close to the waterfall, you will get wet, so put your phone in a waterproof bag. 📍 Visit Mingshi Scenic Area in the afternoon. Rent a bicycle and ride around; the rice paddies, karst peaks, and small river make you feel like you're walking through a painting. In the evening, have grilled fish by the river—it's heavy on pickled bamboo shoots, so let them know if you're not used to it. ⚠️ It's a 40-minute drive between Detian Waterfall and Mingshi Scenic Area. I recommend staying in Mingshi, as it's quieter than Shuolong Town. Bamboo rafts have long lines during National Day, so go early. This is great for families with elderly people or children, as the roads are flat and easy. 07 Tianjin Tianjin is perfect for a 3-day stay—no need to rush, just take it slow. Choose between the Italian Style Town, Five Great Avenues, Olympic Center, or Fantawild based on your mood. ⏰ Arrive at the Five Great Avenues before 9:00 AM. Rent a shared bike and take a 40-minute loop starting from Minyuan Square. In the afternoon, head to the Italian Style Town, find a cafe, sit by the window, and watch the horse-drawn carriages go by. 📍 The Olympic Center is lit up at night and great for a stroll. Fantawild Adventure is in Binhai; it's good for kids, but once is enough for adults. ⚠️ Fantawild is far from the city center—it takes an hour and a half by subway and bus, and lines are at least two hours long during National Day. If you just want to eat and explore, skip Fantawild and save your time for the Northwest Corner and the jianbing guozi stalls. This is for a relaxed, family-friendly trip. 08 Wanning | Hainan Wanning is less crowded than Sanya and warmer than Haikou during National Day. Stay one night each in Shimei Bay and Riyue Bay. ⏰ Watch the sunrise at Shimei Bay; the beach is clean and not too crowded. In the afternoon, head to Riyue Bay. There are surf shops everywhere; renting a board and getting a lesson costs about 300. 📍 Don't miss the sunset at Riyue Bay. Sit on the beach, watch the surfers, and have a coconut. In the evening, go to Xinglong for Southeast Asian cuisine—try the curry beef brisket with lemongrass water. ⚠️ Hotel prices in Wanning skyrocket during National Day, so book your guesthouse in Shimei Bay a month in advance. The waves at Riyue Bay are strong, so don't go into deep water if you can't swim. This is for young people who want to relax and learn to surf. Of these eight places, I highly recommend Gannan and Arxan—they're perfect for National Day. Which one will you choose?

8 Off-the-beaten-path Destinations for National Day: Less Crowded, More Affordable 01. Daxinganling Region | Heilongjiang Heading north during National Day, you'll find places so quiet you'll wonder if you've wandered into a movie set. 🚄 Fly to Mohe or Jagdaqi, then hire a car into the forest area. The road is lined with birch forests, and while cell phone signal is intermittent, it's incredibly peaceful. ⏰ Arrive at the Beiji Village tourist area before 7 AM. The river fog hasn't lifted yet, and you'll be all alone on the boardwalk. Visit the northernmost post office, the northernmost shop, and other attractions one by one—all within half an hour, no queues. The Daxinganling forest scenery isn't limited to any specific spot; it's the backdrop of the entire road. Larch trees start turning yellow at the end of September, and by early October, the golden hues blend with the dark green. Everywhere you park along the roadside is photogenic. ⚠️ Temperatures in the forest area are close to freezing in the mornings and evenings. Don't skimp on your down jacket; you won't be able to withstand the cold. For accommodation, choose a guesthouse in Mohe city or Beiji Village; the prices during the National Day holiday are much more reasonable than in Xuexiang. Meals are simple: iron pot stewed river fish, blueberry jam with steamed buns—don't expect anything fancy, but it's filling. Suitable for those who don't want to be crowded and can accept the time spent traveling. If traveling with elderly people or children, allow an extra day for buffer time and don't overschedule. 02 Huanggang City | Hubei It's a two-hour drive from Wuhan to Huanggang. Many people only use it as a transit point, but the real focus should be on venturing into the mountains. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Huanggang West Station. To get to Luotian Tiantangzhai, it's recommended to hire a car directly, as shuttle buses are infrequent and waiting can be incredibly frustrating. The key word for Luotian Tiantangzhai is "wind." The wind at the summit is strong enough to blow your hat away, but the sight of the sea of clouds is worth it. ⏰ The morning after rain is when the sea of clouds is most likely to appear; taking the cable car up at 6:30 am is perfect. Guifeng Mountain in Macheng is famous for its rhododendrons, which are at their peak in April. Visiting during the National Day holiday is more about hiking and rock viewing. Don't go expecting to see the flowers; treat it as a hiking route – less crowded and more rugged, making it more comfortable. 🍜 Luotian chestnut stewed chicken is a local specialty. The chestnuts are freshly picked in autumn, making them soft and powdery. At the foot of the mountain, a pot of this at a farmhouse restaurant costs just over 100 yuan and is enough for three people. ⚠️ There are few supply points on the mountain, so bring your own water. Suitable for hiking enthusiasts and those driving who want to avoid crowds. Elderly people are advised to only take the cable car section and not attempt the entire hike. 03 Ganzhou City | Jiangxi Province Ganzhou is one of those cities you've "heard of but never visited," making the National Day holiday a perfect opportunity to catch a break. 🚄 High-speed rail goes directly to Ganzhou West Station. Visit Shicheng and Sanbaishan in different directions; it's recommended to split the trip into two days, rather than trying to do both in one day. Shicheng is an old Hakka town. In the old alleys, the rooftops are covered with winnowing baskets drying autumn crops, displaying red peppers and yellow corn – more real than any filter. 📍 Feel free to wander around Qinjiang Road. If you see elderly people drying their produce, don't take close-up photos; greet them first before pressing the shutter. Sanbaishan is the source of the Dongjiang River; the water is so clear you can see the bottom. ⏰ Start climbing the mountain before 10 AM. The sunlight shines obliquely into the valley, making photos perfect for photos without needing editing. The core loop takes about three hours; the steps aren't steep, so it's suitable for children. 🍜 Don't miss the Ganzhou-style stir-fried fish and Ai Mi Guo (a type of steamed rice cake); they're available at breakfast shops in the city center. ⚠️ The autumn harvest in Shicheng depends on the weather. It will be taken down after consecutive rainy days, so ask your guesthouse owner before you go. Stay in Ganzhou city for convenience; you can make a day trip to the two counties. Suitable for those who enjoy the local atmosphere and don't mind traveling. 04 Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai Haixi is the least crowded section of the Northwest route during the National Day holiday, provided you can tolerate the dryness and temperature differences. 🚄 Fly to Golmud or Delingha, then rent a car for self-driving. Public transportation is basically unreliable in this area. The wind is strong at Kunlun Pass, prayer flags flutter loudly, and your face will stiffen after standing for ten minutes. ⏰ The light is most stable between 2 PM and 4 PM; photos taken in the morning are blurry due to backlighting. At an altitude of 4700 meters, avoid running and jumping; walk slowly. The Qarhan Salt Lake is much larger than Chaka Salt Lake and much less crowded. The salt crystals crunch underfoot, like walking on broken glass. ⚠️ Don't wear good shoes; the salt water is highly corrosive, and your shoes will be basically ruined on the return trip. Choose either Emerald Lake or Chaka Salt Lake. Emerald Lake has a richer color, while Chaka is more famous, but the queue for the mini-train during the National Day holiday can be up to an hour long. I chose Emerald Lake; it's less crowded, and the color is just as good. 🍜 The mutton hot pot in Delingha is incredibly warming, but it gets so chilly at night you'll want to wear two pairs of pants. Choose accommodation in Delingha city center; the conditions are much better than near the scenic area. Suitable for experienced drivers and those who can handle altitude sickness. Be cautious if traveling with elderly people or children; the altitude is no joke. 05 Baoji City | Shaanxi Xi'an residents flock to Baoji on weekends, but it's surprisingly quiet during the National Day holiday because everyone is crowding into Xi'an. 🚄 The high-speed train takes 40 minutes to Baoji South Station. There are tourist buses to Taibai Mountain, but driving is recommended for Guanshan Grassland. Taibai Mountain already has snow on the summit in October, while it's still autumn at the foot of the mountain. ⏰ Enter the mountain at 8 am, take the scenic shuttle bus to the lower cable car station, and then walk up. It's unrealistic to finish in one day; you'll need to stay overnight on the mountain if you want to reach the summit. The Famen Temple Buddhist Cultural Area is suitable for those interested in history; the underground palace artifacts are worth seeing, but the commercial street section can be walked through quickly. ⚠️ Don't buy overpriced incense at the entrance; the rules are different inside. Guanshan Grassland and Dongshanfeng offer two distinct experiences. Guanshan Grassland is expansive, perfect for horseback riding and photos; Dongshanfeng is rugged, with meadows and strange rocks, more appealing to hikers. Spend at least two days on both. 🍜 Baoji cold noodles and minced meat noodles are great for breakfast—a tangy and spicy appetizer. Stay near Jing'er Road in the city center for plenty of food options and easy access to various attractions. Suitable for history buffs and light hikers. Suitable for elderly travelers to visit Famen Temple and Guanshan Grassland; Taibai Mountain is best viewed according to their physical condition. 06 Wenzhou City | Zhejiang Wenzhou isn't just for business people; Yandang Mountain and Baizhangji Waterfall are enough to keep you entertained for three days. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Wenzhou South Station or Yandang Mountain Station. Yandang Mountain Station is closer to the scenic area; don't get off at the wrong station. Yandang Mountain Scenic Area is famous for its night views and unique peaks. ⏰ Lingfeng Night View: Enter after 7 PM. The mountain shapes become silhouettes under the moonlight. Listen to the guide's stories, but it's more interesting to see for yourself. Visit Dalongqiu Waterfall during the day; water volume depends on the season, but it's okay during the National Day holiday. Liu Bowen's hometown is in Wencheng. Baizhangji Waterfall has a large drop, and the spray hits your face; your hair will be wet after ten seconds on the viewing platform. ⚠️ The steps are slippery; wear non-slip shoes, not white sneakers. 🍜 Wenzhou lean meat balls, fish ball soup, and glutinous rice are readily available in the Wuma Street area of the city. For seafood at the foot of Yandang Mountain, ask about prices before ordering. Accommodation in Yandang Mountain: Stay in Xianglingtou Village; the scenic area bus stop is right outside. Stay in Wencheng County; enter Baizhangji Waterfall early the next morning to avoid crowds. Suitable for couples and photographers. Elderly people should be cautious when hiking the flat sections of Yandang Mountain; Baizhangji Waterfall has many steps. 07 Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Gansu Gannan's National Day holiday is at the tail end of the peak season; the grass isn't fully yellow yet, and there are half the number of people compared to July and August. 🚄 Fly to Lanzhou and then drive, or take the train to Hezuo; the rest of the journey is by car. Zhagana is a stone city, a village nestled in a mountain valley. ⏰ Get to the viewing platform before 7 AM; the morning mist clings to the mountain peaks, dissipating as soon as the sun comes out. Stay in a village guesthouse; it gets cold at night, so an electric blanket is standard. Langmusi Temple has two sides, one in Sichuan and one in Gansu. Walk around the white stupa and the prayer wheel path; it's peaceful. ⚠️ Respect local customs; don't take photos of people prostrating themselves in prayer. Yeliguan Tourist Area and Gahai Lake are good options if you're on the same route. Migratory birds begin passing through Gahai Lake in October; bring a telephoto lens to capture them. The autumn foliage at Yeliguan is beautiful, but it's far; if you're short on time, you can skip it. 🍜 Tibetan yurts, butter tea, and yak yogurt. You might not be used to butter tea the first time you try it; pour a small amount to test it. Accommodation is best in Hezuo City; staying in a village in Zhagana offers a good experience but is basic. Suitable for those driving and those who can accept basic accommodations. If traveling with elderly people, choose accommodation in Hezuo City, not in the villages. 08 Changsha City | Hunan Changsha is crowded during the National Day holiday, but a less-traveled way to experience it is to explore the back of Yuelu Mountain and the old town of Tianxin Pavilion. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Changsha South Station; the subway goes directly to the city center. Don't take a taxi, as it's often congested. Enter Tianxin Pavilion as soon as it opens at 8 am. The view of the old town rooftops from the city wall is less crowded. ⏰ After 9 am, tour groups arrive, and you'll have to wait to take photos. 📍 Breakfast shops along Baisha Road near the pavilion offer rice noodles and sugar-coated fried dough sticks. Don't just go through the East Gate of Yuelu Mountain; start from the Dongfanghong Square near Hunan University—the path is gentler and the trees are denser. The Hunan Provincial Museum requires advance booking; ⚠️ it's closed on Mondays. If you can't get a reservation, go to Yuelu Academy; there's something to see there too. Huaminglou is in Ningxiang, an hour from the city center, suitable for those interested in modern history. A day trip is enough; don't overschedule. 🍜 Changsha Food Guide: Wenheyou is good for photos, but for food, go to the alley next door. Benluobo and Yizhandeng have long queues; go around 2 PM to avoid peak hours. Accommodation is convenient near Wuyi Square, but noisy; those with light sleep should choose Hexi. Suitable for foodies and city wanderers. Take the cable car up and down Yuelu Mountain with elderly people—it's less strenuous. Of these eight places, the Greater Khingan Mountains and Gannan are the most recommended—less crowded and more scenic. Don't try to visit too many during the National Day holiday; choose two to explore at a leisurely pace—it's better than trying to visit all eight. Where are you planning to go? Let us know in the comments.

Day 1: Sunny weather. At 9:30 AM, we started the hike at an altitude of about 4,100 meters, walking along the rocky riverbed. After a trail lunch, we pushed for the 5,000+ meter mountain pass, enjoying views of the back of the main Gaduo Juewu peak along the way. After descending the pass, we were met with a nameless snow-capped mountain and snow slope opposite us, facing lush green meadows—a blend of winter and spring. We took a small trail, enjoying the picturesque scenery on both sides. We exited the mountains at 4:30 PM and walked another two kilometers along the road to the guesthouse. Day 2: Departed after breakfast. It was drizzling. We walked over 4 kilometers along the road to reach the mountain entrance, where the rain turned to snow. By the time we reached the pass, it was a blizzard with poor visibility. We moved slowly up and down, finally exiting the mountains safely and arriving at Saikang Temple.

Can you have a great time on a tight budget? These 8 uncrowded, beautiful spots for September–October 01 Shennongjia | Hubei In September and October, Shennongjia is so quiet you can hear your own footsteps on the fallen leaves. After the National Day holiday, flight and homestay prices plummet. I entered the mountains on October 8 last year and got a standard room for CNY 180. 📍 The Shennongjia Ecological Tourism Area is huge, and it's basically impossible to get around without a car. I recommend staying in Muyu Town and leaving before 7:00 AM; the morning mist at Dajiuhu Lake is the real highlight. ⏰ Head to Shennong Valley in the morning and visit Banbiyan to see the stone forest in the afternoon. Shennong Peak is over 3,000 meters above sea level, so bring a light down jacket—don't try to tough it out in just a hoodie. ⚠️ Attraction tickets are sold as combined passes or single-site tickets. If you only want to see Dajiuhu Lake, buy a single ticket and don't get tricked into buying a package. Dining in town costs about CNY 40 per person; the stir-fried bamboo shoots with cured meat is worth ordering. 02 Nanping | Fujian It starts to cool down in Wuyi Mountains in September, making hiking much more pleasant. I advise against going on weekends; bamboo raft tickets are easier to snag from Monday to Thursday, and there are half as many people. 📍 Tianyou Peak is a must-climb, but don't wear flat-soled shoes like I did. The stone steps are slippery, so wear sneakers to stay safe. ⏰ Enter the scenic area at 6:30 AM. The clouds and mist swirling around the Nine-Bend Stream make the ticket price worth it. 🍜 After coming down the mountain, head to the resort area to eat Langu smoked goose. Half a goose is about CNY 50; pair it with a bowl of Zixi rice noodles, and two people will be stuffed. ⚠️ Book tickets for the Impression Da Hong Pao show in advance; buying them on-site is expensive and the seats are worse. Student IDs get you half-price tickets, so remember to bring yours. 03 Zhengzhou | Henan Zhengzhou is the most underrated transit hub on this list. Don't just treat it as a stopover city; stay for a day and a half, and you'll find plenty to do. 📍 Go to Qinwei Water City in the evening; once the lights turn on, it looks like a completely different place, and it's free. Get to Shaolin Temple on Mount Song early; arrive at the Pagoda Forest before 8:00 AM, before the tour groups arrive. ⏰ Xiliu Lake is great for cycling after 4:00 PM when it's breezy. You must book the museum in advance, and it's closed on Mondays—⚠️ don't ask me how I know. 🍜 Dining in the city is ridiculously cheap; a bowl of Heji braised noodles is just over CNY 20. Stay along Metro Line 1, and it's convenient to get anywhere. 04 Chengde | Hebei In September, the Chengde Mountain Resort truly lives up to its name as a summer retreat. Tickets aren't cheap, but you can pick and choose from the surrounding temples to save money and get great photos. 📍 Jinshanling Great Wall is much less crowded than Badaling. ⏰ Go up at 4:00 PM; the light hits the bricks at an angle, making every shot look good. ⚠️ Don't take the sightseeing bus around the resort; walking through the lake area for two hours is plenty. The Thousand-Hand Guanyin at Puning Temple is worth buying a separate ticket for. 🍜 Go to the Erxianju Night Market in the evening; the wantuo (buckwheat jelly) and lamb soup cost about CNY 30 per person. Stay at a homestay near the resort; you can get a decent place for CNY 150 during the off-season. 05 Southwest Guizhou | Guizhou Wanfenglin and Maling River Canyon are right next to each other. By September, the rains are ending, but the waterfalls still have plenty of water, and the crowds have thinned out significantly. This place is meant for a slow pace, so don't rush. 📍 Rent an electric scooter in Wanfenglin for CNY 50 to ride around all afternoon, and take your time wandering through Bagua Fields and Nahui Village. ⏰ At 6:00 PM, the sunset dyes the forest of peaks a honey color. Walking the full length of Maling River Canyon takes about three hours. ⚠️ The steps are slippery, so seniors should be careful about doing the whole thing; you can take the elevator up and down. 🍜 Have a bowl of Xingyi lamb rice noodles in the morning for CNY 12. For accommodation, choose a guesthouse inside the Wanfenglin scenic area; you can get a room with a balcony for under CNY 200. 06 Yichun | Jiangxi Mingyue Mountain sounds like a place for retirees, but once you go, you'll realize it's actually great. The temperature on the mountain in September is in the low 20s, which is perfect for soaking in hot springs. 📍 Take the cable car up the mountain and walk the Qingyun Plank Road. ⏰ There's a high chance of seeing a sea of clouds before 10:00 AM. The flat section around Moon Lake is even stroller-friendly. ⚠️ Don't book hot spring hotels at the foot of the mountain last minute; prices double on weekends. Go on a weekday, and you can soak in a private hot spring for CNY 300. 🍜 The steamed sponge cake and selenium-rich dishes in Wentang Town are comfortable and cost about CNY 50 per person. It's great for bringing your parents; the pace is slow and not tiring. 07 Xinzhou | Shanxi Yanmenguan, Laoniuwan, and Mount Wutai are in three different directions; don't try to do them all in one day. I suggest splitting it into two days, otherwise you'll spend the whole time in the car. 📍 Go to Yanmenguan in the morning; it's windy on the city walls, ⏰ and while the light is harsh, it's imposing. Laoniuwan is best for seeing the Yellow River bend in the evening. ⚠️ It's a long way, so it's only convenient if you're driving yourself. Mount Wutai is less crowded in September, and accommodation in Taihuai Town is just over CNY 100. 🍜 The vegetarian food is worth a try, but don't eat at the entrance of the scenic area; it's cheaper further inside. Buy Mount Wutai admission tickets and sightseeing bus tickets separately, and book in advance through official channels. If you're bringing seniors, just explore Taihuai Town and don't climb to the peak. 08 Haixi | Qinghai Chaka, Emerald Lake, and Qarhan: after September, the number of tourists drops sharply, and the price of chartered cars also goes down. But ⚠️ don't believe the "mirror of the sky, perfect for photos anytime" hype; you only get that mirror effect if there's no wind and no people. 📍 Qarhan Salt Lake is much larger than Chaka and less crowded. ⏰ The light is clearest at noon. Emerald Lake's colors are most vibrant after 4:00 PM. It's windy at Kunlun Mountain Pass, so bring a thick jacket. 🚄 A chartered car in Golmud is about CNY 500 per day, and carpooling is about CNY 150 per person. 🍜 Golmud's "kang" pot lamb costs about CNY 60 per person and will fill you up. You can stay in a chain hotel for CNY 150; don't stay by the salt lake, as it's expensive and damp. Of these eight places, Shennongjia and Southwest Guizhou are the ones I personally want to visit again. If you're on a tight budget, pick one and don't try to do too much. Where are you planning to go in September?

8 must-visit small cities for a reverse National Day trip 01 Baoshan | Yunnan Head to Tengchong for the National Day holiday; airfare is significantly cheaper than Dali, and it's less crowded. 🚄 Land at Tuofeng Airport and take a taxi to Heshun Ancient Town (about 40 minutes). Don't rush into the scenic area; drop your luggage at your guesthouse first. Heshun Ancient Town is best explored before 7:00 AM. 📍 At that time, only locals are at the laundry pavilion by the Xian River. The light hits at an angle—perfect for photos. Afterward, grab a bowl of pea starch noodles. ⚠️ Just browse the jade shops in the ancient town; don't make impulsive purchases. Visit Beihai Wetland after 4:00 PM. Boat and admission tickets cost just over 100 yuan. The grass mats feel soft underfoot, like stepping on a wet sponge. ⏰ Boats stop running at 6:30 PM, so don't arrive right at closing time. Save the Tengchong Volcano and Geothermal Area for the second day. The "Big Boiling Pot" spring is spectacular, but the sulfur smell is strong. The Yunfeng Mountain cable car is very steep; if you're afraid of heights, your legs might shake, but the scenery is worth the ticket price. 02 Shantou | Guangdong Nan'ao Island is the most worthwhile stop in Shantou, but be prepared for traffic jams when heading to the island during the National Day holiday. 🚄 Take bus 161 from Shantou Station to the island; it's less stressful than driving yourself, as two-hour traffic jams on the bridge are common during holidays. Renting an e-bike on the island is the most flexible option, costing 80–100 yuan per day. 📍 Riding from Houzhai Town to Qing'ao Bay along the island loop road is refreshing, and it's freer than taking a sightseeing bus. ⚠️ Don't eat seafood near the pier; the prices are inflated. For food, grab a bowl of oyster omelet with fish ball soup in Houzhai Town in the morning. 🍜 Choose an oyster omelet with crispy edges; the soggy ones aren't cooked properly. In the afternoon, visit the Tropic of Cancer Square; when it's not crowded, you can capture the vast coastline. Staying in Qing'ao Bay is convenient for sunrise, but hotel prices double during the National Day holiday. If you're on a budget, stay in Houzhai Town; there are more dining options, and it's a 10-minute bike ride to the beach. 03 Guyuan | Ningxia Xumishan Grottoes is the least popular spot on this trip; you basically won't have to wait in line during the National Day holiday. 🚄 It takes about an hour by taxi from Guyuan Station to the grottoes. It's recommended to charter a car for the round trip, as it's hard to get a taxi back. The grottoes are carved into red sandstone and feature statues from the Northern Wei to Tang dynasties. 📍 The Great Buddha in Cave 51 is the best preserved. ⚠️ Some caves are locked with iron gates; don't force them open—viewing them from the outside is just as good. ⏰ Before 10:00 AM, the light shines into the caves at an angle, making it best for photos. In the afternoon, you'll be shooting against the light, and faces will be dark. If bringing elderly travelers, be careful; the steps are steep and lack railings, so take it slow. The museum at the foot of the mountain is worth a 30-minute visit to understand the history of the grottoes. On the way back to the city, stop for a bowl of Guyuan mutton paomo; the soup is rich, the meat is tender, and it's lighter than the version in Xi'an. 04 Yushu | Qinghai Hoh Xil and Sanjiangyuan National Park are already quite cold during the National Day holiday. 🚄 Land at Yushu Batang Airport and charter a car to enter the nature reserve; it costs 800–1,000 yuan per day, but carpooling is more cost-effective. ⚠️ The altitude is over 4,500 meters, so altitude sickness is no joke. Arrive in Yushu city two days early to acclimate; don't rush in right after getting off the plane. Start taking Rhodiola rosea a week in advance; it's useless if you start after arriving. 📍 The Sonam Dargye Protection Station is a spot where you can park and take photos. Seeing Tibetan antelopes depends on luck; by October, they have already migrated deeper into the reserve. The wetlands in Sanjiangyuan are vast; ⏰ when the light is good in the afternoon, the water surface looks like crushed silver. Bring enough dry food and hot water; there are no restaurants in the reserve. Take all your trash with you and don't feed the wildlife. This trip is suitable for those who are physically fit and can endure hardship; be cautious if traveling with children. 05 Karamay | Xinjiang Urho Ghost City is windy but uncrowded during the National Day holiday. 🚄 It's about a two-hour drive from Karamay Station to Urho. It's recommended to join a one-day tour, as arranging transportation yourself is too much hassle. The Yardang landforms look best at dusk; ⏰ enter the scenic area after 6:00 PM, when the light turns the mounds a golden red. 📍 Walk 200 meters deeper from the viewing platform for fewer crowds and better photo angles. ⚠️ The small train in the scenic area costs extra, but it's actually not far to walk. The wind is strong enough to blow your hat off, so wear a tight one. Wear sand-proof shoes; fine sand getting into sneakers is very uncomfortable. You can have a big plate of chicken when you return to the city. 🍜 Restaurants in Karamay serve generous portions; a small size is enough for two people. Choose accommodation in the city center; don't stay near the scenic area, as there's nothing there at night. 06 Shigatse | Tibet Mount Everest Base Camp and Tashilhunpo Monastery—one is in the clouds, the other is in the city. 🚄 You need to charter a car from Shigatse Station to Mount Everest; it's a two-day round trip. Prices are high during the National Day holiday, so book in advance. Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery in the morning; ⏰ it opens at 9:00 AM. Follow the locals on their kora; the atmosphere is quieter than the Potala Palace. 📍 The bronze Buddha in the Maitreya Chapel is worth seeing, but photography is not allowed inside the hall. At Mount Everest, ⚠️ temperatures drop below -10°C at night in October, so a sleeping bag and down jacket are must-haves. The tent guesthouses at the base camp have basic facilities; be cautious if you are a neat freak. Altitude sickness is even more intense than in Yushu, so have oxygen bottles ready. If the weather is good, ⏰ you can see the golden sunrise on the mountain around 5:00 AM. Don't get upset if you can't see it; plateau weather changes in an instant. 07 Taizhou | Zhejiang Tiantai Mountain, Taizhou Prefecture City, and Shenxianju are scattered; it's recommended to pick two for the National Day holiday. 🚄 Get off at Taizhou West Station; it's closest to Linhai Ancient City, a 20-minute taxi ride away. Taizhou Prefecture City Cultural Tourism Area is best explored in the evening. 📍 Eat the "egg white sheep tail" on Ziyang Street while it's hot; it tastes fishy when cold. ⚠️ There's an extra charge for night tours of the city wall; it's free to go up during the day, and the view is just as good. Leave a full day for Shenxianju; the cable car line can be an hour long during the National Day holiday. ⏰ Arrive at the South Gate before 7:30 AM to save a lot of time. There's a line for photos at Ruyi Bridge; if you're afraid of heights, take the plank road on the side. Tiantai Mountain is suitable for those who like temples and waterfalls; Shiliang Waterfall is most spectacular after rain. Choose the Prefecture City if traveling with elderly people, as it's mostly flat. Choose Shenxianju if traveling with children; the cable car and plank road make it easy. 08 Yantai | Shandong Penglai Pavilion, Changdao Island, and Longkou Nanshan—these three spots in Yantai are enough for a three-day trip. 🚄 It's about an hour and a half from Yantai Station to Penglai; taking the high-speed train to Penglai City Station is closer. Enter Penglai Pavilion as soon as it opens at 8:00 AM to ⏰ avoid tour groups. 📍 The rear corridor offers the best view of the sea. ⚠️ The cable car and the pavilion have separate fees, so think before you buy. Don't count on seeing a mirage; that's a rare, unpredictable event. You need to take a boat to Changdao Island; book ferry tickets in advance for the National Day holiday. Stay at a fisherfolk guesthouse on the island. 🍜 The mackerel dumplings and seafood noodles are hearty. The sunset at Jiuzhang Cliff is worth waiting for; it's windy, so wear a jacket. Longkou Nanshan is best for the last day; the Great Buddha is spectacular, but it's quite commercialized. ⚠️ Don't get scammed into paying for incense; sincerity is what matters. Depart from Yantai Station on your way back and pick up some apples. Take a reverse trip to these eight small cities during the National Day holiday; it's more comfortable than crowding into popular destinations. Which one do you want to visit most? Let's chat in the comments.

Don't just look at the popular spots for National Day budget travel. These 6 places are less crowded, budget-friendly, and photogenic 01 Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai If you want to avoid the crowds during National Day, heading west is the right move. My biggest takeaway from my last trip to Haixi was that the scenery rivals any viral destination, but my wallet barely felt a thing. ⏰ Arrive at Chaka Salt Lake before 7:00 AM for the best mirror effect and fewer crowds. Peak season admission is 60, and the one-way train is 50. I recommend walking in and taking the train out to save half the effort. 📍 Chaerhan Salt Lake is much larger than Chaka, yet has far fewer tourists. Driving yourself is most convenient; it takes about an hour from Golmud city center, and you can park on the side of the road to take photos. The light at Emerald Lake is softest after 4:00 PM, making the layered colors of the water most distinct. ⚠️ Don't wear white shoes. The edges of the salt crust are muddy, and I saw a guy ruin his new shoes firsthand. The wind at Kunlun Pass is strong enough to blow your hat off, so bringing a windbreaker is a smart move. Staying in Golmud city center is the most cost-effective option, with budget hotels around 100 and shared rides to the salt lake costing about 80 per person. 02 Ya'an | Sichuan It takes one hour to get to Ya'an from Chengdu by high-speed rail, with tickets costing over 50. A weekend trip of two days and one night is just right. This city has been underrated for too long. Bifengxia is divided into a wildlife park and a scenic area; I recommend visiting only the scenic area. Admission plus the sightseeing bus is just over 100. The canyon is packed with waterfalls, and it takes about 3 hours to walk the whole route. 📍 A taxi from Ya'an city center to Bifengxia costs about 40. There are buses, but they run infrequently. ⚠️ Don't buy the so-called "wild honey" at the entrance; the price is doubled, and it might not even be real. 🍜 You must try Ya fish when you're back in the city. Clay pot Ya fish is a local specialty—the soup is fresh and the meat is tender. You can get full for about 60 per person. Staying near the Langqiao Bridge in Yucheng District is comfortable for evening strolls with river views. It's suitable for seniors and children, as the boardwalks are flat throughout. It rains often in Ya'an in October, so bring a folding umbrella; the waterfalls are even bigger and more beautiful after the rain. 03 Weifang | Shandong Weifang is more than just kites; Qingzhou Ancient City is a hidden gem for avoiding the National Day crowds. I took the high-speed rail from Weifang Station to Qingzhou, which took 20 minutes and cost over 10. Qingzhou Ancient City tourist area doesn't charge general admission, which is very fair. Ouyuan Garden and the Examination Hall charge separately, about 20 each. If you want to save money, just wandering the old streets outside is enough to keep you busy for half a day. ⏰ The ancient city lights up after 5:00 PM. The stone roads paired with red lanterns make for great photos. 📍 Try the old locust tree pan-fried buns on Ouyuan Street; they are 1.5 each, and locals line up to buy them. ⚠️ The main street of the ancient city will be crowded during National Day, so duck into the alleys near the North Gate for a quieter, more authentic local vibe. Staying at a guesthouse inside Qingzhou Ancient City costs around 150 for a room with a courtyard. This is for people who like a slow pace, not for those who want to rush through tourist spots. October in Qingzhou is neither cold nor hot; a light jacket is enough. 04 Xiangtan | Hunan Xiangtan is much quieter than Changsha during National Day. It takes less than an hour to get to Xiangtan North Station by high-speed rail and then transfer to Shaoshan. The core attractions of the Shaoshan tourist area are free, but you need to book in advance via their official WeChat account. ⚠️ Spots are limited during National Day, so book at least 3 days in advance. Don't wait until you're at the entrance to pull out your phone. Caojia'ao Waterfall is in Xiangtan County. It's a wild waterfall and doesn't require an admission ticket. 📍 Navigate to "Caojia'ao" to reach the village entrance, then walk for 15 minutes until you hear the water. The flow is heavy after rain, but it might just be a trickle otherwise. 🍜 Back in the city, have a bowl of Xiangtan rice noodles. Shredded pork topping is 8, and adding a fried egg makes it 10. Staying near Jianshe Road intersection is convenient for taking buses in any direction. Suitable for those on a tight budget who want to see nature. It's still hot in Hunan in October, so bring short sleeves and a sun-protective jacket. 05 Xuancheng | Anhui Xuancheng is one of those places that doesn't sound famous but is a pleasant surprise once you visit. It takes a little over an hour to get from Hefei to Jingxian by high-speed rail, costing around 60. Admission to Chaji Ancient Village is 50, half the price of Hongcun, and it has half the tourists. The village is built along the Xu River. 📍 Standing on the stone bridge in front of Erjia Ancestral Hall to take photos, the white walls and black tiles reflected in the water don't even need a filter. Admission to Jixi Longchuan is 75; the wood carvings in the Hu Family Ancestral Hall are worth a close look. ⚠️ There are no direct buses between the two ancient villages, so I recommend driving or carpooling. A chartered car costs about 300 per day. 🍜 The rice cakes and stinky mandarin fish in Chaji Village are worth trying, costing about 50 per person. Staying at a guesthouse in the ancient village is about 120; waking up to the sound of roosters is very healing. Suitable for those who like ancient architecture and quiet. Southern Anhui is cool in the mornings and evenings in October, so bring a knit cardigan. 06 Ankang | Shaanxi Ankang is in southern Shaanxi, and I was surprised by how few people were there during National Day. It takes two hours to get here from Xi'an by high-speed rail, costing just over 100. Fengyan Ancient Terraced Fields don't charge admission. In early October, the rice is just turning yellow, layered across the hillsides. ⏰ Arrive at the viewing platform at 6:30 AM for morning mist and golden terraced fields—even phone photos look great. Qianceng River is in Langao County, with an admission fee of 60. The water is clear enough to see the bottom. 📍 It takes about 40 minutes to walk along the boardwalk to the Three-Tier Waterfall. The path is flat, so seniors can walk it too. ⚠️ The two attractions are far apart, so I recommend staying in Ankang city center and booking a shared day tour, which costs about 150 per person including admission. 🍜 Ankang steamed noodles and hot and sour konjac are local specialties; you can get full for 10. Suitable for those who want to see autumn colors without the crowds. It rains often in southern Shaanxi in October, so have non-slip shoes ready. 07 Shenzhen | Guangdong Shenzhen isn't crowded during National Day? You just have to pick the right places. Dameisha Seaside Park is free, but you need to book in advance. ⚠️ There is a daily limit, so grab your spot on their official WeChat account early. Window of the World and the Overseas Chinese Town (OCT) tourist resort are suitable for families with kids, but admission is pricey, starting at 200 for adults. I suggest choosing one or the other; the creative park inside OCT is free to walk around and more relaxing for photos. 📍 Mission Hills Leisure Tourism Resort has an eco-sports park with few people and lots of trees, perfect for a picnic. It's directly accessible by Metro Line 4, so no need to take a taxi. 🍜 Don't eat inside the tourist areas. Take the subway for two stops to Baishizhou for Chaoshan beef hot pot, which costs about 80 per person. Staying along the Nanshan subway line, budget hotels are around 200. Suitable for those who don't want to travel far but still want a vacation feel. It's still hot in Shenzhen in October, so don't skimp on sunscreen. 08 Baise | Guangxi The scenery of Baise is overshadowed by Guilin, but it's actually just as good. It takes an hour and a half to get from Nanning to Baise by high-speed rail, costing over 70. Haokun Lake is a karst lake with an admission fee of 50. Walking around the lake boardwalk takes about 2 hours. ⏰ The light is slanted after 4:00 PM, and the mountain shadows reflected in the lake look ten times better than in the morning. Admission to Tongling Grand Canyon is 110. The waterfall crashes down from a height, and the mist hits your face. 📍 There is a shuttle bus at the canyon exit for 15; don't push yourself if you're tired from walking. Chengbi Lake is free and suitable for an evening visit; it's where locals go for walks. ⚠️ Attractions in Baise are scattered, so I recommend renting a car for about 200 per day. 🍜 Rice rolls and five-colored sticky rice are specialties; you can get full for 10. Suitable for those who like nature but fear crowds. October in Guangxi is still lush and green; bring a light jacket to protect against the morning and evening chill. Of these 6 places, Haixi and Baise surprised me the most—the scenery is wild enough, and the costs are low enough. When traveling for National Day, choosing the right place is more important than choosing the right time. Where are you planning to go? Let's chat in the comments section.

01 Datong | Shanxi If you want to avoid the crowds during Mid-Autumn and National Day, Datong is my first pick. Arrive at the Yungang Grottoes before 8 AM, when the slanting light fills the caves and the folds in the Buddha statues' robes are clearly visible. ⏰ After 10 AM tour buses arrive by the load, and you’ll just be pushed along by the crowds. You must book a separate time to climb the Hanging Monastery. Daily visitor limits apply, and if you don’t get a slot you can only look up from the base of the mountain. ⚠️ If you’re afraid of heights your legs may give out. The wooden walkways are narrow, so avoid very wide skirts. Climbing Mount Hengshan (North) takes about 4 hours. If you’re with older adults, take the cable car to mid-mountain and walk slowly from there. 🍜 After descending, head back to the city for a bowl of knife-cut noodles with a side of pickled vegetables—much more authentic and better value than the expensive tourist set meals. 🚄 It’s about a 40-minute taxi ride from Datong South Station to Yungang; there’s also a direct bus. 02 Xiangxi | Hunan Fenghuang Ancient Town no longer charges an entrance fee, but combo tickets for small attractions are sold separately, and my advice is not to buy them. A walk along the Tuojiang River to see the stilt houses and the jumping rocks is enough. ⏰ The morning mist at around 6:30 AM makes the best photos; after 8 AM the shops open and the atmosphere changes. You can visit Dehang Grand Canyon and Aizhai on the same day. Look up from under the Aizhai Bridge—the steel cables strung across the canyon are pretty impressive. 📍 The mountain road around Aizhai has many switchbacks; drive slowly if you’re self-driving. Shibadong Village is best for a slow wander—you’re there to see everyday mountain village life, not staged performances. 🍜 In the evening back in Fenghuang, try blood rice duck and sour fish. Choose a table on the second floor by the river, and avoid sitting on the ground floor next to the touts. 03 Zhangzhou | Fujian In Yunshuiyao Old Town the tulou and banyan trees blend together. Walk along the creek on the cobblestone path. ⏰ After 4 PM most visitors have dispersed and the light is softer—great for photos. The Nanjing tulou split into two routes: Tianluokeng and Yunshuiyao. Trying to see both in one day will be rushed. I recommend choosing only Tianluokeng; the four dishes and one soup layout looks most complete from the observation deck. ⚠️ There’s an extra fee to go upstairs inside the tulou—ask first before paying. Binhai Volcanic National Geopark in Zhangpu has distinctive hexagonal basalt columns, but it’s windy and hats can blow away. 📍 It’s about a 1.5-hour drive from Zhangzhou city center; public transport is infrequent, so it’s inconvenient without a car. 🍜 On the way back, have four-fruit soup and lu mian (braised noodles) in Zhangzhou Old Town to cut the grease. 04 Xi'an | Shaanxi You must book the Terracotta Army in advance; in peak season there are basically no tickets available on the day. ⏰ Enter right at opening and head straight to Pit 1. By the time the big crowds arrive you’ll already have seen the most important section. ⚠️ Don’t trust people at the entrance who offer a so-called direct shuttle; the official route 5 departs from the east square of the train station. Tickets for the History Museum are even harder to snag. If you can’t get one, go cycle the Xi'an city wall. Renting a bike and circling the wall takes about 2 hours; go at dusk to watch the lights inside and outside the city come on. Qinling's Zhongnan Mountain deserves a full day—pick either Cuihua Mountain or Nanwutai, and don’t try to do too much. 📍 Take the metro to Weiqunan and change to a bus; parking is limited if you drive. 🍜 At night in the Muslim Quarter, don’t just stick to the main street—walk toward Sajinqiao for more authentic paomo and barbecue. 05 Huzhou | Zhejiang Nanxun Ancient Town is one of the Jiangnan water towns I’m happy to return to. It’s less commercial; the riverside residences near Bai Jian Lou are still lived in. ⏰ After 5 PM the tour groups leave; sit by the river and watch the boats pass in peace. Xiaolian Zhuang and Jiayetang library can be seen together; the gardens are small and half an hour is enough. ⚠️ Some free guides in the town will end by taking you into a shop—listen and move on, and don’t feel pressured to buy. It’s about a 1-hour bus ride from Huzhou Station to Nanxun; driving is more convenient. 🍜 Shuangjiao noodles are the local way to eat—order both crisp pork and fried fish, with a bowl of smoked soybean tea. It’s perfect for taking your parents for a slow walk; the stone streets are flat and not tiring. 06 Haixi | Qinghai This route is best by car; chaining it together by public transport is too much hassle. The Kunlun Mountain passes are windy and cold—bring a warm jacket even in August. ⏰ Set off at dawn; there are few cars on the road and you can see the snow-capped peaks blanch in the morning light. Chaerhan Salt Lake is much less crowded than Chaka; salt crystals carpet the ground and crunch under your feet. ⚠️ Don’t wear light-colored shoes—the salt stains won’t come out. Emerald Lake displays layered colors and the afternoon light is good, but the wind can blow salt onto your face, so wear sunglasses. Chaka Salt Lake now requires a shuttle to enter. If you want mirror-like reflections, go early; by noon it’s crowded and the water gets muddy. 📍 Driving times between the lakes are long—bring water and snacks. If you’re prone to altitude sickness, take medication in advance and don’t try to tough it out. 07 Longnan | Gansu Tianchi in Wen County is tucked in the mountains; the lake is deep green and surrounded by primary forest. ⏰ It’s best to visit after rain—the mist winds around the mountainside like an ink wash. ⚠️ Mountain roads are very twisty and can cause motion sickness—use motion-sickness patches ahead of time. Guan'egou breaks into Guanzhu Gorge and Eman Gorge; doing both in one day is exhausting. I suggest just doing Guanzhu Gorge—the waterfalls and calcified pools are concentrated there and the boardwalks are easy. 📍 There’s a shuttle at the gorge entrance—don’t force your way in on foot; save your energy for the trail inside. Longnan overall isn’t crowded, even during Mid-Autumn and National Day. 🍜 Locals eat potato jiaotuan and walnut buns—flavors tend to be sour and spicy, so tell them in advance if you can’t handle it. It’s suited to people who want a quiet mountain-and-water trip. 08 Dandong | Liaoning Walk the Broken Bridge on the Yalu River after the lights come on at night—the river breeze is cool and the lights on the far bank are dim, creating a strong contrast. ⏰ Go onto the bridge around 6:30 PM at dusk—photos look best before it’s fully dark. ⚠️ People at the bridge will try to get you onto sightseeing boats at inflated prices—if you want to go, buy tickets at the official dock. Phoenix Mountain is known for being steep; the Old Ox Back section requires using both hands and feet—avoid it if you’re afraid of heights or are with young children. 📍 It’s about a 1-hour ride from downtown Dandong to Fengcheng, and there are storage lockers at the mountain base. Kuandian Hekou and Lujiang Village are best reached by car; Lujiang Village has rapeseed flower fields and river-bay morning mist in autumn. 🚄 There are buses from Dandong Station to Kuandian, but services are infrequent—get there early. 🍜 Back in the city, try yellow clams and menzi; the riverside night market is about half the price of stalls at the attraction entrance. These eight places: Datong and Xi'an are best for history, while Haixi and Longnan are best for nature. Pick one for a spontaneous Mid-Autumn/National Day trip and don’t overbook your itinerary. Took my wife to these 8 places for the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day 01 Lingshui | Hainan If you want to take your wife away from the crowds during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, Lingshui is quieter than Sanya and cheaper than Wanning. The water visibility at Fenjiezhou Island is among the best in Hainan. ⏰ Get to the island before 10:00 AM for bright light; you can see coral and small fish while snorkeling. Head to Nanwan Monkey Island in the afternoon. The view from the cross-sea cable car is worth it, but ⚠️ don't carry plastic bags in your hands—the monkeys will really pounce to snatch them. Staying overnight on the island is more comfortable. Catching the early boat means fewer people, perfect for couples who want to take photos without crowds. If you're bringing elderly family members, skip Monkey Island and just enjoy the beach. Check official announcements for ticket and boat schedules on the day of, and book 1 day in advance during peak season. 02 Huizhou | Guangdong Huizhou West Lake is best in the morning. 📍 Enter from Pinghu Gate and walk along the Su Causeway to Sizhou Pagoda. There's plenty of shade along the way, making it easy even with a stroller. For lunch, have a bowl of Hengli rice noodles in the old town of Qiaodong, 🍜 and remember to add an order of stuffed tofu. Head to Mount Luofu in the afternoon. ⏰ It's cooler to hike after 3:00 PM, but it takes 4 hours round-trip to reach Feiyun Peak. If you're not up for that, just take the cable car to the upper station and head back. Save Xunliao Bay for the evening; watching the sunset on the beach is more rewarding than swimming. Hotel prices double during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day. ⚠️ When booking a sea-view room, ask if it's a "partial sea view"—many photos are taken at an angle. Recommendation: West Lake and Xunliao Bay are must-visits; Mount Luofu depends on your stamina. 03 Hohhot | Inner Mongolia Laoniuwan Yellow River Grand Canyon was the highlight of this trip. 📍 It's about a 2-hour drive from downtown Hohhot. The canyon combined with the bend in the Yellow River looks great in autumn when the grass turns yellow. ⏰ Arrive at 4:00 PM to catch the sunset hitting the cliff walls. Chilechuan Grassland Cultural Tourism Zone is more relaxing and suitable for those who don't want to rush. Horseback riding and archery are charged per activity, so ask for the price before you play. In the city, have shaomai with brick tea. 🍜 Places like Laosuiyuan are busiest in the morning. ⚠️ The temperature difference between day and night on the grassland is huge. During the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, it can drop to single digits at night, so you must bring a jacket. This is suitable for couples driving themselves, as public transport to Laoniuwan isn't very convenient. 04 Haixi | Qinghai This route is for couples willing to drive long distances. Kunlun Mountain Pass is windy; ⏰ arriving at noon is safer, as it's too cold in the morning and evening. The salt flowers at Qarhan Salt Lake look like broken glass; wearing dark clothes makes for better photos. The color of Emerald Lake changes throughout the day—it's greener in the morning and bluer in the afternoon. At Chaka Salt Lake, ⚠️ don't wear white shoes; the salt crust cuts your feet and is hard to clean. Renting shoe covers is easier. It's recommended to complete the road trip in 2 days, staying in Golmud as a stopover. The altitude is around 3,000 meters, so if you're bringing your wife, take Rhodiola rosea in advance. Check official announcements for ticket and shuttle bus information on the day of. Expect long lines during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, so enter the scenic area early. 05 Chenzhou | Hunan Gaoyiling Danxia is the face of Chenzhou. 📍 Navigate to Gaoyiling Tourist Area and walk the plank road to see the red rocks against the green water. ⏰ The light is soft after 4:00 PM, so it's not too sunny. Dongjiang Lake Tourist Area is best in the early morning. To see the mist over Little Dongjiang, catch the 6:30 AM mist-viewing plank road; if you're late, the mist will dissipate. Mangshan Five-Finger Peak has a cable car, so you can bring elderly family members, but the wind at the top is strong, so add a windbreaker. For food, don't miss the Dongjiang fish; 🍜 steamed is the best way to have it. ⚠️ Some areas of Gaoyiling don't have railings, so don't step back too far when taking photos. Recommendation: Dongjiang Lake and Gaoyiling are must-visits; Mangshan depends on your time. 06 Anshan | Liaoning Qianshan is the only answer in Anshan. 📍 Enter from the main gate and walk the section from Wuliang Temple to Tianshangtian. There are many stone steps, so ⏰ it's cooler to hike in the morning; it gets the western sun in the afternoon. If you don't want to get tired, take the cable car to Wufoding to overlook the entire pine forest. During the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, the red leaves are just starting; they won't be at their peak until mid-to-late October. There are vendors selling Nanguo pears at the foot of the mountain; 🍜 it's a local specialty that's incredibly sweet. ⚠️ There are few supply points on the mountain, so bring enough water and chocolate yourself. This is suitable for couples who like hiking. Wear non-slip shoes, and don't wear new shoes that might cause blisters. Buy tickets and cable car passes separately, and check official announcements for the day of. 07 Ningde | Fujian Visit Mount Taimu to see the strange rocks. 📍 You have to turn sideways to pass through the "Yixiantian" section, so keep that in mind if you're a bit on the heavier side. Baishuiyang and Yuanyangxi are best for playing in the water in summer. It's cold during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, but there are fewer people, and walking along the creek-side plank road is still comfortable. Xiapu Beiqi Mudflat is a photography spot. ⏰ Check the tide table and go during low tide; you won't be able to see anything at high tide. The Xiapu mudflats are generally suitable for a slow stroll. Stay in Sansha Town and watch the sunrise in the morning. 🍜 Don't eat seafood noodles and small seafood at the entrance of the scenic area; it's half the price if you head into town. ⚠️ The mudflats are slippery, so don't wear flip-flops. This is suitable for couples who love photography; the light is more important than the scenic spot itself. 08 Lianyungang | Jiangsu Take your wife to Huaguoshan; the point isn't the hiking, but the Water Curtain Cave and Yunu Peak section. 📍 Take the scenic shuttle to the mountain gate, then walk up. ⏰ Enter at 8:00 AM to avoid tour groups. Liandao is suitable for the afternoon; splash around at Dashawan Beach, and Sumawan is less crowded. It's windy by the sea during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, so bring a light jacket. Go to Xugou for seafood; 🍜 don't order in the Liandao scenic area, as the prices are quite different. ⚠️ There are many monkeys on Huaguoshan, so keep your bag zipped up. Recommendation: Liandao is for relaxing by the sea, and half a day is enough for Huaguoshan. Check official announcements for ticket and shuttle information on the day of. These 8 places cover the sea, mountains, lakes, grasslands, and salt lakes. If I really had to choose, I'd bet on Lingshui and Haixi—one is comfortable, and the other is breathtaking. Which one are you planning to hit first for the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day?

Looking for a relaxing getaway in September and October? These 5️⃣ places are so quiet you can just drift off! 01 Jingmen | Hubei I advise against going to Mingxian Mausoleum too early. ⏰ Enter after 4 PM. Tour groups have left, and the only sounds along the Sacred Way are the wind and birdsong. A taxi from the city center to Mingxian Mausoleum in Zhongxiang takes about 40 minutes. 🚄 Taking the bus from Jingmen Station is even better; avoid buses, as the transfers can be incredibly frustrating. Walking the entire central axis takes about an hour. The stone-paved path is flat, even for elderly people in wheelchairs. In late September, the ginkgo leaves start to turn yellow, creating a beautiful contrast with the red walls, but don't expect to have the place to yourself. Local families still come with their kids on weekends. 🍜 Turn right after exiting the scenic area; there's a small street where you can find local specialties like Panlong cuisine and rice tea. A meal for around 30 RMB per person is quite filling. For accommodation, choose a place in Zhongxiang city center, not near the scenic area entrance; there aren't even convenience stores at night. ⚠️ Xianling and Mingxianling are the same place; don't search for the wrong one on your navigation app. Check official ticket prices in advance for peak season; the final price is subject to the announcement on the day. 02 Chenzhou|Hunan Don't schedule Gaoyiling and Dongjiang Lake on the same day; you'll be exhausted. The entire Gaoyiling Danxia trail takes about two hours. The ridge offers no shade; ⏰ If you start before 7 AM, the sun will be so intense after 10 AM you'll just want to go back down. The fog at Dongjiang Lake is a major attraction. 📍 The boardwalk between Bridge 2 and Bridge 4 offers the best views. September's fog isn't the thickest, but there are half the number of people compared to summer. 🚄 It's about an hour's drive from Chenzhou West Station to Dongjiang Lake. There's a cable car at Mangshan Wuzhifeng; those with mobility issues can take it directly, don't try to climb. The Gaoyiling tourist area has many steps; hold children's hands tightly and don't let them stand outside the guardrails. Staying in a guesthouse within the Dongjiang Lake scenic area avoids the morning rush. 🍜 Dongjiang fish and salmon sashimi are local specialties, but avoid the first restaurant near the entrance; walk about 200 meters further in for better prices. ⚠️ The temperature on Mangshan Mountain is 7-8 degrees Celsius lower than in the city; bring a jacket even in September. 03 Haixi | Qinghai Kunlun Mountains, Qarhan Salt Lake, Emerald Lake, and Chaka Salt Lake form a classic route, but after September, Chaka is incredibly windy. ⏰ The light at Qarhan Salt Lake is most stable in the morning; afternoon backlighting results in a washed-out white image, a recipe for disaster. Emerald Lake is less crowded than Chaka, and its colors are more vibrant. 📍 About 20 minutes from Dachaidan Town, ideal for those with a car; otherwise, it's practically impossible to explore without one. 🚄 Golmud Station is the nearest major station, but trains are infrequent, so check in advance. Chaka Salt Lake is still accessible in September, but the water is cold; renting shoe covers is better than going barefoot. Kunlun Pass is at a high altitude; ⚠️ those with a history of altitude sickness should not attempt it, as the wind is strong and your hat will be blown away. Stay in Dachaidan or Golmud, but avoid lakeside accommodations; it's cold at night and there's little food available. 🍜 Roasted mutton and yak yogurt are safe bets along this route, costing between 50 and 80 yuan per person. After September, it gets dark early in Qinghai, so don't overschedule your itinerary; leave time for relaxation and contemplation. 04 Dali | Yunnan Xizhou Ancient Town, Chongsheng Temple Three Pagodas, Erhai Lake, and Nanzhao Folk Island—these four should keep you occupied for three days. ⏰ Arrive in Xizhou before 8 am; the rice paddies are quiet, and the light is soft. After 10 am, tour groups arrive, and there will be queues for photos at the corner tower. Don't try to circle Erhai Lake in one day; it's exhausting. 📍 The most comfortable way to cycle along the ecological corridor from Caicun to Xizhou is by electric bike, but avoid riding onto the village's stone-paved roads as it's bumpy. It's recommended to visit the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple in the afternoon; ⏰ the light shining on the pagodas after 4 pm is beautiful. To get to Nanzhao Folk Island, you need to take a boat; the boat can be very windy, so take medication if you're prone to seasickness. Stay in Xizhou or Caicun, not in the old town, as it's noisy at night. 🍜 Xizhou Baba (a type of flatbread) should be eaten freshly baked; it gets hard like a brick when it cools down. For raw skin and milk fan (a type of cheese), it depends on your personal tolerance; don't order anything too hard if it's your first time. ⚠️ The temperature difference between day and night is significant in Dali in September; wear short sleeves at midday and a jacket in the morning and evening. The UV rays are strong by Erhai Lake, so don't skimp on sunscreen. 05 Jinzhong|Shanxi Choose either the Qiao Family Compound or the Wang Family Compound; I chose the Wang Family Compound. The Qiao Family Compound is more famous but smaller, and attracts many tour groups. The Wang Family Compound is larger and wilder. ⏰ Go in after 3 PM; the light shining obliquely into the courtyard makes for better photos. Don't stay on the main street of Pingyao Ancient City; it's noisy. 📍 Stay in an alley on the edge of the ancient city; it's quiet, and only a ten-minute walk to Rishengchang. Mianshan Mountain in Jiexiu requires climbing; if you have mobility issues, take the cable car—don't push yourself. 🚄 Pingyao Ancient City Station is closer to the ancient city; Pingyao Station is actually farther away, so check carefully when buying tickets. September in Shanxi is cool, but there's a large temperature difference between day and night, so bringing a light down jacket is worthwhile. 🍜 Pingyao beef and "wan tuo" (a type of steamed bun) are standard fare, but restaurants inside the ancient city are overpriced. Go outside the city gate and into the residential area; the prices are half. ⚠️ The Qiao Family Compound has separate entrance fees and guided tours; don't be fooled by touts at the entrance. 06 Jilin Songhua Lake and Wusong Island: Visit Songhua Lake in September, but Wusong Island is best seen in winter. ⏰ Take a boat trip on Songhua Lake after 4 PM; the lake is shrouded in mist, creating a scene like an ink painting. 🚄 A taxi from Jilin Railway Station to Songhua Lake takes about 40 minutes. Don't take the bus, it's slow. Wusong Island doesn't have rime ice in September, but the island is quiet and perfect for relaxing. 📍 Stay overnight in Zengtong Village; you can see the river mist in the morning, and there are so few people you can hear yourself breathing. 🍜 Fried rice noodles and Wula hotpot are local specialties in Jilin City, costing around 40 RMB per person. Stay in the city center by the river for a comfortable evening walk; avoid staying in the scenic area, as it's deserted at night. ⚠️ Boat trips on Songhua Lake are less frequent in September, so check the schedule in advance to avoid a wasted trip. Wusong Island is most popular in winter; September is for peace and quiet. 07 Shenyang | Liaoning Beiling Park, World Horticultural Exposition Garden, Wugou Jingguang Relic Pagoda, and Beita Falun Temple – this route is perfect for a leisurely stroll. ⏰ Beiling Park opens at 6 AM; locals do their morning exercises there. Sneaking in for a walk is great – the air is fresh and it's free! World Horticultural Exposition Garden is large; rent a bicycle, or you'll be exhausted walking. 📍 Wugou Jingguang Relic Pagoda is in Tawan, and Beita Falun Temple is nearby. Visiting both together should take about half an hour. 🚄 The Shenyang Metro goes to Beiling Park, while World Horticultural Exposition Garden requires a bus transfer, or a taxi for around 30 yuan. September in Shenyang is cool, perfect for a long walk. 🍜 Laobian Dumplings and Li Lianguan Smoked Meat Pancakes are safe choices, but avoid eating at the entrance to the scenic area; head towards the residential areas. Staying on Zhongjie or Taiyuan Street is convenient for transportation. ⚠️ Beita Falun Temple has short opening hours, closing at 4 PM, so don't go too late. 08 Southeast Guizhou | Guizhou Xijiang Miao Village, Zhaoxing Dong Village, Zhenyuan Ancient Town, and Xianghuoyan: I advise you not to visit all four, choose two to spend more time on. Xijiang has beautiful lights at night, but it's heavily commercialized. ⏰ Go to the viewing platform before 7 AM; it's quieter and the lighting is better. Zhaoxing Dong Village is quieter than Xijiang. Stay in the village and listen to the Dong folk song rehearsals in the morning—it's more authentic than the performances. Zhenyuan Ancient Town is best explored at night; eat grilled fish by the Wuyang River. 🍜 Try the sour fish soup and beef offal soup—it's up to your courage! Xianghuoyan has decent water levels in September, but the roads are slippery. ⚠️ Wear non-slip shoes, and avoid white shoes. The distances between places in Southeast Guizhou are far. 🚄 Kaili South Station is a hub, but you need to transfer to get to Zhaoxing, so plan ahead. Stay in a guesthouse in the village, not at the town entrance—it's noisy. September in Guizhou is rainy, so bring an umbrella and don't trust the weather forecast; it can rain suddenly. These five places are perfect for visiting in September or October. Fewer people, cooler weather, perfect for relaxing. Which one would you most like to lie down in? Tell me in the comments, and I'll help you avoid the bad ones. Want to relax in September or October? These 5️⃣ places are so quiet you can just relax. 01 Jingmen|Hubei I advise you not to go to Mingxian Mausoleum too early. ⏰ Enter after 4 PM; the tour groups have left, and only the wind and birdsong remain along the sacred path. A taxi from the city center to Mingxian Mausoleum in Zhongxiang takes about 40 minutes. 🚄 Taking the bus from Jingmen Station is even better; don't take the bus—the transfers will make you question your existence. Walking the entire central axis takes about an hour. The stone-paved path is flat; even elderly people in wheelchairs can walk it. In late September, the ginkgo leaves begin to turn yellow, creating a beautiful contrast with the red walls. However, don't expect to find the place deserted; local families still come with their kids on weekends. 🍜 Turn right after exiting the scenic area, and you'll find a small street where you can find local specialties like Panlong cuisine and rice tea. A meal will cost around 30 RMB per person. For accommodation, choose a place in Zhongxiang city center, not near the scenic area entrance, as there aren't even convenience stores at night. ⚠️ Xianling and Mingxianling are the same place; don't search for the wrong one on your navigation app. Check official ticket prices in advance during peak season, and refer to the announcement on the day of your visit. 02 Chenzhou|Hunan Don't schedule Gaoyiling and Dongjiang Lake on the same day; you'll be exhausted. The entire Gaoyiling Danxia trail takes about two hours. The ridge offers no shade, so if you start before 7 AM, the sun will be so intense after 10 AM you'll just want to head back down. The fog at Dongjiang Lake is a major attraction. 📍 The best view is from the boardwalk between Bridge 2 and Bridge 4. September fog isn't at its thickest, but the advantage is that there are half the crowds compared to summer. 🚄 It's about an hour's drive from Chenzhou West Station to Dongjiang Lake. There's a cable car at Mangshan Wuzhifeng; those with mobility issues can simply take it, don't try to climb. The Gaoyiling tourist area has many steps, so keep a close eye on children and don't stand outside the guardrails. Staying in a guesthouse within the Dongjiang Lake scenic area avoids the morning rush. 🍜 Dongjiang fish and salmon sashimi are local specialties, but don't eat at the first shop near the scenic area entrance; walk about 200 meters further in for better prices. ⚠️ The temperature on Mangshan Mountain is 7-8 degrees Celsius lower than in the city; bring a jacket even in September. 03 Haixi|Qinghai Kunlun Mountains, Chaka Salt Lake, Emerald Lake, and Chaka Salt Lake form a classic route, but after September, the wind at Chaka is incredibly strong. ⏰ The light at Qarhan Salt Lake is most stable in the morning; in the afternoon, backlighting results in a washed-out white image – a recipe for disaster. Emerald Lake is less crowded than Chaka Salt Lake, and its colors are more vibrant and wild. 📍 It's about a 20-minute drive from Dachaidan Town, ideal for those with a car; otherwise, it's practically impossible to explore without one. 🚄 Golmud Station is the closest major station, but trains are infrequent, so check in advance. Chaka Salt Lake is still accessible in September, but the water is cold; renting shoe covers is better than going barefoot. Kunlun Pass is at a high altitude; ⚠️ those with a history of altitude sickness should avoid it, as the wind is strong and your hat will be blown away. Stay in Dachaidan or Golmud, but avoid staying by the lake; it's cold at night and there's little food available. 🍜 Roasted mutton and yak yogurt are safe bets along the way, costing between 50 and 80 yuan per person. After September, it gets dark early in Qinghai, so don't overschedule your itinerary; leave time for relaxation and contemplation. 04 Dali | Yunnan Xizhou Ancient Town, Chongsheng Temple Three Pagodas, Erhai Lake, and Nanzhao Folk Island – these four destinations are enough to keep you entertained for three days. ⏰ Arrive in Xizhou before 8 AM; the rice paddies are quiet, and the light is soft. After 10 AM, tour groups arrive, and there will be queues for photos at the corner tower. Don't try to circle Erhai Lake in one day; it's exhausting. 📍 The most comfortable way to get around is by bike along the ecological corridor from Caicun to Xizhou. Electric bikes are also an option, but avoid riding into the village's stone-paved roads – they're bumpy. It's recommended to visit the Chongsheng Temple Three Pagodas in the afternoon; ⏰ the light shines beautifully on the pagodas after 4 PM. Nanzhao Folk Island requires a boat ride; the boat rocks when it's windy, so take seasickness medication beforehand. Stay in Xizhou or Caicun; avoid staying in the ancient town, as it's noisy at night. 🍜 Eat Xizhou Baba freshly baked; it hardens like a brick when cold. Raw hides and milk fan (a type of cheese) are a matter of personal preference; don't order too much if it's your first time. ⚠️ September in Dali has a large temperature difference between day and night. Wear short sleeves at midday, but a jacket in the morning and evening. The UV rays are strong around Erhai Lake, so don't skimp on sunscreen. 05 Jinzhong|Shanxi Choose either the Qiao Family Compound or the Wang Family Compound; I chose the Wang Family. The Qiao Family Compound is more famous but smaller, and attracts many tour groups. The Wang Family Compound is larger and more rustic. ⏰ Go in after 3 PM when the light shines obliquely into the courtyard, making for better photos. Don't stay on the main street in Pingyao Ancient City; it's noisy. 📍 Stay in an alley on the edge of the ancient city; it's quiet, and it's only a ten-minute walk to Rishengchang. Mianshan Mountain in Jiexiu requires climbing; if you have mobility issues, take the cable car, don't push yourself. 🚄 Pingyao Ancient City Station is closer to the ancient city, but Pingyao Station is farther away; check carefully when buying tickets. September in Shanxi is cool, but the temperature difference between day and night is large, so bringing a light down jacket is worthwhile. 🍜 Pingyao beef and bowl-shaped rice cakes are standard fare, but restaurants in the ancient city are overpriced. Walk out of the city gate and into the residential area; prices are half. ⚠️ The Qiao Family Compound has separate entrance fees and guided tours; don't be fooled by touts at the entrance. 06 Jilin Songhua Lake and Wusong Island: Go to Songhua Lake in September; for Wusong Island, wait until winter. ⏰ Take a boat on Songhua Lake after 4 PM; the lake is shrouded in mist, like an ink painting. 🚄 A taxi from Jilin Station to Songhua Lake takes about 40 minutes; don't take the bus, it's slow. Wusong Island doesn't have rime ice in September, but the island is quiet and perfect for relaxing. 📍 Stay overnight in Zengtong Village; see the river mist in the morning—so few people you can hear yourself breathing. 🍜 Jilin City's fried rice noodles and Wula hot pot are local specialties, costing around 40 RMB per person. Staying in the city center by the river is comfortable for evening walks; avoid staying in the scenic area, as it's deserted at night. ⚠️ Songhua Lake cruise services decrease in September, so check the schedule in advance to avoid a wasted trip. Wusong Island is peak season in winter; September is for peace and quiet. 07 Shenyang|Liaoning Beiling Park, World Horticultural Exposition Garden, Wugou Jingguang Relic Pagoda, and Beita Falun Temple – this route is perfect for a leisurely stroll. ⏰ Beiling Park opens at 6 AM; locals do morning exercises there, so you can sneak in for a walk – the air is fresh and it's free. World Horticultural Exposition Garden is large; rent a bicycle, or you'll be exhausted walking. 📍 Wugou Jingguang Relic Pagoda is in Tawan, and Beita Falun Temple is nearby. Visiting both together takes about half an hour. 🚄 Beiling Park is accessible by Shenyang Metro; for World Horticultural Exposition Garden, you'll need to transfer to a bus, or take a taxi for around 30 yuan. September in Shenyang is cool, perfect for a long walk. 🍜 Lao Bian Dumplings and Li Lianguan Smoked Meat Pancakes are safe choices, but avoid eating near the scenic area entrance; head towards the residential areas. Stay on Zhongjie or Taiyuan Street for convenient transportation. ⚠️ Beita Falun Temple has short opening hours, closing at 4 PM, so don't go too late. 08 Southeast Guizhou | Guizhou I advise against visiting all four: Xijiang Miao Village, Zhaoxing Dong Village, Zhenyuan Ancient Town, and Xianghuoyan. Choose two to spend your time. Xijiang has beautiful lights at night, but it's heavily commercialized. ⏰ Go to the viewing platform before 7 AM; it's quieter and the lighting is better. Zhaoxing Dong Village is quieter than Xijiang. Stay in the village and listen to Dong folk song rehearsals in the morning—it's more authentic than the performances. Zhenyuan Ancient Town is best explored at night. Eat grilled fish by the Wuyang River; 🍜 try the sour soup fish and beef offal soup depending on your courage. The water level at Xianghuoyan in September is decent, but the roads are slippery. ⚠️ Wear non-slip shoes, and avoid white shoes. The distances between various points in southeastern Guizhou are far. 🚄 Kaili South Station is a transportation hub, but you need to transfer to get to Zhaoxing, so plan ahead. Stay in a guesthouse in a village, not at the town entrance—it's noisy. September in Guizhou is rainy, so bring an umbrella and don't trust the weather forecast; it can rain suddenly. These five places are best visited in September or October. Less crowded, cooler weather, perfect for relaxing. Which one would you most like to lie down in? Let me know in the comments, and I'll help you avoid the bad ones.

Budget-friendly Mid-Autumn Festival trips: 8 off-the-beaten-path cities with fewer crowds and lower costs 01 Baoshan | Yunnan After landing at Tengchong Airport, a taxi to Heshun Ancient Town costs about CNY 30. I recommend staying at a guesthouse on the outskirts of the ancient town; it's half the price of the core area and only a 10-minute walk away. ⏰ Visit Heshun Ancient Town before 8:00 AM. The tour groups haven't arrived yet, and you'll only see locals washing vegetables by the laundry pavilion. Admission is over CNY 50, but after 5:00 PM, many alley entrances aren't monitored—you know what I mean. It's best to take the cable car up Yunfeng Mountain. A round trip costs CNY 160. The boardwalk at the summit is built along the cliff edge, which might make those with a fear of heights feel weak in the knees. In autumn, the grass mats at Beihai Wetland turn yellow and feel like a carpet underfoot, but don't wear white shoes—the mud is unforgiving. Soak in the hot springs at Tengchong Volcano Geothermal National Park. The light hitting the valley at an angle after 4:00 PM is the most beautiful. ⚠️ The stalls selling boiled eggs near the geothermal area are cheaper than the ones inside. Don't rush to buy from the first one you see. 02 Jingmen | Hubei I didn't have high expectations for the culture at Xianling Mausoleum, but I ended up spending nearly two hours wandering through the stone statues behind the Ming Tower. The stone figures and horses stretch for over 600 meters, and the yellow autumn grass actually makes for better photos. 🚄 It takes about 40 minutes by bus from Jingmen Station to Xianling Mausoleum, or a little over CNY 30 by taxi. I recommend going in the morning; in the afternoon, the mountains block the light, making photos look dull. Admission is CNY 70, with half-price for students. Hire a guide or tag along with a tour group, otherwise, you'll just be looking at a pile of rocks. ⚠️ The souvenir stalls inside are overpriced—resist the urge to buy. For food nearby, head to Mochou Village, a 15-minute drive away. Rice tea and Panlong vegetable are local specialties, and you can get full for about CNY 40 per person. Stay at a chain hotel in downtown Jingmen for a little over CNY 100 a night; don't stay near the scenic area. 03 Aksu | Xinjiang Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon sounds intimidating, and it really is once you walk inside. The red mountains have been carved by the wind into various shapes. After 3:00 PM, the sunlight hits at an angle, making the rock walls look like they're on fire. 🚄 It takes about 2.5 hours to charter a car from downtown Aksu, or about CNY 150 per person for a shared ride. I recommend leaving at 8:00 AM and bringing enough water and naan, as there are no supply points inside. ⚠️ You'll have to walk through water in some sections of the canyon, so don't wear mesh shoes. Never enter on a rainy day; flash floods happen quickly, and the scenic area will close temporarily. Check official announcements before you leave. Admission is over CNY 40, with shuttle bus fees extra. If you only have one day, I suggest skipping Wensu Grand Canyon and choosing this one instead—the visual impact is more direct. You can find a nice place to stay in downtown Aksu for CNY 200. 04 Yulin | Shaanxi For the Danxia landforms at Wave Valley, I advise you to enter after 4:00 PM. The midday sun is too flat, and all the textures get washed out. ⏰ At dusk, the red sandstone layers curl up, looking like crumpled paper. 📍 A taxi from Jingbian County to Wave Valley takes about 40 minutes and costs CNY 80. Admission is free, but parking is CNY 20. Don't climb over fences or step on the rock formations; the fine is a minor issue, but the damage is irreversible. Over by the Yellow River in Jia County, Xianglu Temple is built on a cliff top with the Yellow River right below. In autumn, the water is muddy yellow, which feels a bit desolate against the sunset. Red Stone Gorge is best visited in the morning, as the cliff carvings are clearer in the morning light. A night in downtown Yulin costs around CNY 150. Have a bowl of Pin San Xian (mixed three fresh ingredients) with some potato shreds (Yangyu Chacha) for about CNY 30 per person. ⚠️ The farmhouses around Wave Valley are overpriced; it's more cost-effective to eat back in the county town. 05 Haixi | Qinghai Don't try to visit Kunlun Mountain, Qarhan Salt Lake, Emerald Lake, and Chaka Salt Lake all in one day. I suggest splitting it into two days, otherwise, you'll spend the whole time in the car. 🚄 Starting from Golmud, Qarhan Salt Lake is the closest, just a 30-minute drive away. There's no admission fee for the salt lake, but don't walk barefoot—the salt crust is sharp. Emerald Lake is in Da Qaidam, and the water is an unreal shade of green. ⏰ The colors are most saturated after 4:00 PM. Chaka Salt Lake is famous, but it's also very crowded. Enter before 7:00 AM for the best mirror effect; any later and it's full of footprints. Admission is CNY 60, with the small train costing extra. Kunlun Mountain Pass is at an altitude of 4,700 meters. ⚠️ Don't jump around; altitude sickness is no joke. Stay in downtown Golmud for a little over CNY 100 a night, which is half the price of staying near the scenic area. Bring enough oxygen canisters and sunscreen. 06 Tai'an | Shandong For Mount Tai, I advise against climbing at night. Around the Mid-Autumn Festival, temperatures at the summit drop to just a few degrees at night, and renting a coat costs CNY 30—they're dirty and heavy. ⏰ Start from Hongmen at 6:00 AM and arrive at Nantianmen by 2:00 PM—the pace is just right. 🚄 Take a bus from Tai'an Station to Hongmen for CNY 3. Admission is CNY 115, and a one-way cable car ride is CNY 100. If you're not very fit, take the cable car to Zhongtianmen and then climb; it saves half the effort. 📍 The stairs at Shibapan are steep, so don't push yourself—hold onto the railing as you walk. For the descent, take the Tianzhufeng route; it's less crowded and more scenic, but there are fewer signs, so go with a companion. 🍜 After descending, go to the Old County Government Office to have a tofu feast for about CNY 50 per person. Stay in downtown Tai'an for a little over CNY 100. ⚠️ Instant noodles at the summit cost CNY 15 a cup; it's more practical to bring your own self-heating meal. 07 Shuozhou | Shanxi Hahukou (Tiger-Killing Pass) sounds like a battlefield, but it was actually a tax station during the Ming and Qing dynasties. This is where people left for the "West Mouth" (Zouxikou). Now, only the dilapidated city walls and an ancient path remain. 📍 It takes about 40 minutes by taxi from Youyu County to get there, costing CNY 60. Admission is free, and there are guides at the visitor center—just tag along and listen. ⏰ After 4:00 PM, the light hits the rammed earth walls, and the colors are just the right warmth. ⚠️ There's nothing to eat nearby, so bring your own food. It's windy, so hold onto your hat—that's where mine flew away. A night in Youyu County costs around CNY 100. Have a bowl of Youyu lamb—it's not gamey—with some oat noodles for about CNY 40 per person. If you're not interested in history, you can skip this place. 08 Zhenjiang | Jiangsu For Jinshan, Jiaoshan, and Beigushan, a combined ticket for the three mountains is CNY 120, which is cheaper than buying them individually. I recommend Jinshan in the morning, Beigushan in the afternoon, and saving Jiaoshan for the next day. 📍 Don't miss Fahai Cave in Jinshan Temple; although small, it's full of storytelling. Looking at the Yangtze River from Beigushan, ⏰ the sunset dyes the river surface gold after 5:00 PM, which is more beautiful than Jinshan. Jurong Maoshan is in another direction, a one-hour drive from downtown Zhenjiang. Admission is CNY 80, with cable car fees extra. The Taoist temple complex is built on the mountaintop, and visiting on a cloudy or misty day feels like being in a painting. 🍜 For Zhenjiang pot-lid noodles, go to that old shop on Daxi Road; a bowl is CNY 15. Stay near Xijindu, where you can find a nice guesthouse for CNY 200. ⚠️ Xijindu is very commercialized at night; it's more charming to visit during the day. For Mid-Autumn Festival travel, don't try to do too much. Picking two or three places to explore at a leisurely pace is more comfortable than rushing around. Personally, I highly recommend Baoshan and Yulin—they have fewer crowds, cost less, and leave a lasting impression. Where are you planning to go? Let's chat in the comments.

Instead of fighting crowds on holidays, head to these small towns. I've picked 8 places that are easy to get to and budget-friendly. 01 Ganzi | Sichuan I'm a fan of Newduqiao in autumn. ⏰ Mid-to-late Oct, the poplars turn yellow, and any photo taken by the 318 National Highway looks like a screensaver. But don't just stand on the roadside; it's dusty and busy. Walk 200m into the village for clean lighting and composition. Mugecuo is best in the morning when the lake is like a mirror. 🚄 It's about a 30-min taxi ride from Kangding city. Admission and sightseeing bus aren't cheap, but they save energy. ⚠️ Altitude is around 3,700m, so don't run or jump; walk slowly. I recommend 2 days for Daocheng Yading. Spend 1 day on the short route from Chonggu Temple to Pearl Lake, and 1 day on the long route to Luorong Pasture. ⚠️ Spots for horse riding on the long route are limited; arrive at the ticket office before 8 AM. Hailuogou is best in winter, with glaciers and hot springs. Stay in Moxi Ancient Town at night and have a bowl of yak beef hot pot to feel refreshed. 02 Yushu | Qinghai You shouldn't drive into Hoh Xil yourself. 📍 The real sights are along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, from Kunlun Pass to Wudaoliang. ⏰ Tibetan antelopes are most likely to appear at dawn and dusk. Don't chase them; just watch from afar. Access to Sanjiangyuan National Park is currently limited, so check official notices before you go. ⚠️ Don't trust roadside touts offering to "take you deep into the source"; they're mostly scams. Yushu city itself is worth a 1-day stop. There's chanting at Jiegu Monastery in the morning, and a walk around the Xinzhai Mani Stone Mound takes 30 mins. 🍜 Find a Tibetan restaurant for lunch and try tsampa with butter tea. You might not be used to it at first, but it really warms you up. This is suitable for experienced drivers, not for traveling with elderly family members. 03 Jingmen | Hubei Xianling Mausoleum was an unexpected highlight of my trip. 📍 It's about a 40-min drive from Jingmen city, and there are so few tourists you can hear the wind. ⏰ The light is slanted after 3 PM, making the red walls and stone statues perfect for photos. But don't just visit the mausoleum area. Mochou Village is right next door; it looks like a small ancient town when the lights come on in the evening, perfect for a stroll and dinner. 🍜 Panlong vegetable is a local specialty; it's steamed and has a texture like meat cake. ⚠️ Xianling Mausoleum is closed on Mondays for maintenance, so confirm before you leave. This place is great for parents because the roads are flat and easy to walk. Kids might find it boring, so bring some snacks. 04 Zibo | Shandong Zhoucun Ancient Mall is more interesting than I thought. 📍 Enter from the main archway and walk through Yinzishi Street and Sishi Street. ⏰ Arrive before 10 AM when shops are just opening for perfect empty shots. ⚠️ Don't buy sesame cakes at the first shop at the entrance; go deeper for the same price and a crispier taste. Zibo BBQ is still worth eating, but avoid the viral internet-famous spots. 🍜 Find a place in a local neighborhood for pancakes with scallions and dipping sauce; you can eat your fill for about 50 yuan per person. 🚄 A taxi from Zibo station to Zhoucun is about 30 yuan; buses are available but slow. This is suitable for a 2-day, 1-night weekend trip for couples or friends. It's too hot in summer, so spring and autumn are best. 05 Hechi | Guangxi The Donglan landscape has an unspoiled, wild charm. 📍 You can stop anywhere along the Hongshui River for a view. ⏰ Go after the rain when the mountains are foggy, like an ink painting. Jiudun Tianchuang is great for water activities, but ⚠️ there are many undercurrents, so don't try to swim in deep areas. You need a boat to enter Xiangbei Shangri-La; the cave entrance is narrow, but it opens up inside. Sanli Yangdu offers bamboo rafting; the light is soft after 4 PM, which is great for photos. 🍜 Hechi's rice noodles are ridiculously cheap at 6 yuan a bowl. This is suitable for people who love nature and don't like rushing between attractions. Driving is recommended as public transport is infrequent. 06 Turpan | Xinjiang The Flaming Mountains are truly hot. ⏰ Go before 8 AM or after 7 PM; the surface temperature at noon can fry an egg. 📍 Just walk the corridor in the scenic area; don't ride camels, as it's expensive and you'll be exposed to the sun. Kumtag Desert is close to the city and accessible by taxi. ⚠️ Don't wear sandals as the sand will burn your feet. Bring a bottle of water; climbing the dunes is more tiring than you'd think. The sunset is worth the price of admission, with colors shifting from gold to purple. Eat grapes and pilaf in Turpan city. 🍜 Farmhouses near Grape Valley are okay for a rest, but prices are geared toward tourists. It's best to visit in spring or autumn; summer is a hardcore experience. 🚄 It's a 1-hour high-speed train ride from Urumqi, which is convenient. 07 Qinhuangdao | Hebei Beidaihe isn't just for summer. ⏰ Early May or late Sept is best, with fewer people and a cool, not biting, sea breeze. 📍 Watch the sunrise at Pigeon Nest Park and check the tide table in advance to go clam digging when the tide goes out. Walk around Shanhaiguan Ancient City and take a look at the "First Pass under Heaven" tower. ⚠️ Don't spend too much time inside as the commercial street is very generic. 🍜 Sitiaobaozi is a local classic with thin skin and big fillings; have it with a bowl of millet porridge. It's suitable for weekend road trips from Beijing or Tianjin, and kids can dig in the sand. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Beidaihe station; a taxi to the beach is about 20 yuan. 08 Shannan | Tibet I advise you not to just stop at the viewing platform at Yamdrok Lake. 📍 Drive along the lakeside road towards Langkazi and find a slope to go down; the lake water is an unreal blue. ⏰ The sunlight is direct from 10 AM to 2 PM, giving the most saturated colors. ⚠️ The altitude is over 4,400m, so don't jump around, and wear a hat because it's windy. The viewing platform charges admission, but some spots by the lake are free, so choose what you prefer. 🚄 You can charter a car from Lhasa for a day trip, or a shared car costs about 200 yuan per person. This is suitable for those who have already acclimated to the plateau. If it's your first time in Tibet, I suggest staying in Lhasa for 2 days first. These 8 places vary: Ganzi and Shannan are the most physically demanding, while Jingmen and Zibo are the most relaxing. Pick one and get going.

Some cities sound familiar, but if you were asked where to go, you wouldn't know what to say. These 8 cities are classic examples. They don't compete for attention, but they have incredible depth. 1️⃣ Xinyang | Henan First up, Jigong Mountain. I call this place the "Central Plains air conditioner." You still need a blanket to sleep at night in the summer—just imagine that. ⏰ The best time to reach the summit is before 7:00 AM for a high chance of seeing the sea of clouds. If you go later, you'll just see a sea of people. 📍 Baoxiao Peak is a must-visit spot, but don't wear flat-soled sneakers; the stone steps are steep and slippery. 🍜 After coming down, you must head to the city for a bowl of Xinyang hot dry noodles. It's a completely different style from Wuhan's, with a richer sauce. Pair it with a bowl of spicy soup, and you'll be full for 10 yuan. ⚠️ Homestays on the mountain are significantly overpriced on weekends. Book 3 days in advance, or you'll have to stay in the city and commute. It's great for a summer getaway with parents or for finding a quiet place to zone out alone. Attraction ticket and shuttle bus rules change frequently, so check official announcements before you go. 2️⃣ Yueyang | Hunan Yueyang Tower, Dongting Lake, and Junshan Island can actually be done in one day, but don't get the order wrong. 🚄 Start with Yueyang Tower. Get there right when it opens at 8:00 AM to avoid crowds and get better lighting. There are occasional promotions for free admission if you recite "Yueyang Tower Record," so check before you go. Afterward, take a boat directly to Junshan Island. 📍 The spotted bamboo and silver needle tea are local specialties, but the island is large, so I recommend spending 20 yuan on the sightseeing bus. ⏰ Head back to the shores of Dongting Lake in the evening to watch the sunset; it feels more special than watching from the tower. 🍜 In the evening, go to Bianhe Street for Dongting Lake shrimp tails and "huitou" fish. It costs about 60–70 yuan per person. ⚠️ Don't order fish without a listed price at lakeside food stalls; ask for the price before ordering. Overall, it's suitable for couples and families with kids. The pace is slow and relaxing. 3️⃣ Ankang | Shaanxi Ankang is what I call the "traitor" of Shaanxi—it doesn't look like Shaanxi at all, with greenery everywhere. Qianceng River is best visited after the rain when the mist is thick and the waterfalls are beautiful, but ⚠️ the stone paths are slippery, so seniors should be careful. Fengyan Ancient Terraced Fields are best seen during the irrigation period in April or when the rice turns yellow in September. ⏰ In the early morning before the mist clears, every photo you take looks like a desktop wallpaper. 📍 It's about a 1.5-hour drive from downtown Ankang. I recommend staying in Hanyin County and having a bowl of Hanyin braised noodle slices—cheap and filling. 🚄 It's just over an hour by high-speed train from Xi'an, perfect for a weekend trip. Not for those who just want to check off tourist spots, but perfect for those who like to take it slow and enjoy pastoral scenery. 4️⃣ Haixi | Qinghai Kunlun Mountain, Qarhan Salt Lake, Emerald Lake, and Chaka Salt Lake are all on the same route, but don't try to cram them all into one day—you'll be exhausted. 🚄 I recommend entering via Golmud and exiting via Chaka. Chartering a car for 3 days is more comfortable. 📍 Qarhan Salt Lake is much larger than Chaka and less crowded. The Wanzhang Salt Bridge is worth a stop. Emerald Lake ⏰ is most vibrant after 3:00 PM; if you go at noon, it's just a bright, white expanse. ⚠️ Don't buy shoe covers for Chaka Salt Lake; renting them at the attraction is cheaper than buying them outside. Plus, once you get in the water, you'll realize you can't avoid the salt holes anyway. 🍜 There are few dining options on the road, so bring your own food and water. Altitude sickness varies from person to person. Kunlun Mountain Pass is at a high altitude, so don't jump around. This is suitable for experienced drivers and photographers who don't mind roughing it. 5️⃣ Ma'anshan | Anhui Caishiji, the place where Li Bai supposedly got drunk and tried to scoop up the moon, is now a riverside park, but it still has a great atmosphere. 📍 Enter from the East Gate, walk along the riverside boardwalk to Sanyuan Cave, then head up to Cuiluo Peak to see the Yangtze River. The whole route takes 2–3 hours. ⏰ After 4:30 PM, mist rises over the river, making it perfect for photographing ship silhouettes. 🍜 After leaving the attraction, go to Dangtu County for a bowl of pork noodles—fatty but not greasy—for 15 yuan. 🚄 It's a 20-minute high-speed train ride from Nanjing, faster than going to the Nanjing suburbs. ⚠️ You don't have to take the cable car in the park; it's only a 20-minute walk. It's great for history buffs and those looking for a quiet riverside stroll. It's also easy enough for seniors. 6️⃣ Wenshan | Yunnan Puzhehei—the name might sound a bit funny, but it actually means "a lake full of fish and shrimp." ⏰ From June to August, the lotus flowers are in full bloom. Take a willow-leaf boat through the lotus pond. The boatman might take you to a water fight, so let them know in advance if you don't want to get wet. 📍 The sunrise at Qinglong Mountain Observation Deck is worth the 20-minute climb. 🍜 Lotus leaf omelet and sour soup chicken are local specialties. Farmhouse restaurants by the lake cost about 50 yuan per person. ⚠️ Don't buy lotus flowers at the entrance; there are plenty inside, and you aren't allowed to bring them on the boats anyway. 🚄 It's a 1.5-hour high-speed train ride from Kunming to Puzhehei Station, followed by a 20-minute taxi ride. It's great for families—kids will love playing in the water—and for those who just want to relax for a few days. 7️⃣ Guyuan | Ningxia Xumishan Grottoes—honestly, they aren't as famous as Dunhuang, but they offer a sense of desolation that Dunhuang can't match. 📍 The grottoes are spread across 8 cliff faces. Standing at the foot of the 20-meter-tall seated Buddha in the Great Buddha Pavilion, you won't want to look away even when your neck gets sore. ⏰ Go in the afternoon when the light hits the cliff face, making the outlines of the Buddha statues clearest. ⚠️ Some grottoes are closed for protection. Don't climb over the railings or touch the statues. 🍜 Head back to downtown Guyuan for mutton paomo and shengcuan noodles—a different style from what you'd find in Xi'an. 🚄 It's over 3 hours by train from Yinchuan; driving is recommended. This is for people interested in grottoes and Silk Road culture, not for those just looking for photo ops. 8️⃣ Nanjing | Jiangsu Presidential Palace, Confucius Temple-Qinhuai River, Niushou Mountain, and Xuanwu Lake—if you want to visit all four, set aside at least 2 days. 📍 You can do the Presidential Palace and Xuanwu Lake on the same day: Presidential Palace in the morning, and cycling around Xuanwu Lake in the afternoon. ⏰ Watch the sunset at Taicheng in the evening to capture the city wall and the lake in one shot. Confucius Temple ⚠️ is packed at night. For snacks, go to Laomendong instead, and don't buy the 10-yuan fake mutton skewers by the Qinhuai River. The underground palace of the Usnisa Palace at Niushou Mountain is truly stunning, but 🚄 it's far from the city center—it takes over an hour by subway and bus, so set aside half a day for it. 🍜 Any duck blood vermicelli soup you find near a residential building will taste better than what you get at the attraction. It's suitable for everyone, but don't go during holidays, or you'll regret it. None of these 8 places became popular because of marketing. Pick one and go before they get too crowded. How many have you been to? Let us know in the comments.

I spent three days in Golmud, and it was truly breathtaking. The vastness and desolation here really hit home. The pace was relaxed throughout—no need to rush early in the morning. Take your time to soak in the awe-inspiring Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. A reminder to everyone: watch out for altitude sickness and avoid strenuous activity. Day 1: Downtown + Qarhan Salt Lake Sleep in and wake up naturally. Start with breakfast in downtown Golmud—I recommend the local lamb offal soup and steamed buns to boost your energy. Take a quick stroll through the Golmud Museum to learn about the geological history of the Qaidam Basin; you don't need to stay long, about an hour is enough. After lunch, head to Qarhan Salt Lake, about an hour's drive away. Qarhan is quieter than Chaka, with vast, endless salt flats and water that has a faint greenish-blue hue. Walk slowly along the boardwalk—it's great for photos. Remember to wear shoe covers, as the salt water is highly corrosive. The light is best around 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM, so avoid the harsh midday sun. Return to the city in the evening to stay. Get some rest early to acclimate to the altitude, and avoid staying up late. Day 2: Kunlun Mountains day trip No need to get up too early. Depart around 8:00 AM and drive along National Highway 109 toward the Kunlun Mountains. The scenery gets better along the way, with Gobi, deserts, and snow-capped mountains appearing one after another. First, stop at the Kunlun Sacred Spring, where the water never freezes—it's a great photo spot. Continue forward to the Kunlun Mountain Pass to gaze at Yuzhu Peak from afar; the snow-capped mountains against the blue sky are spectacular. Prepare dry food and hot water for the road, as there are very few restaurants along the way. On the return trip, you can slow down and enjoy the Gobi scenery as you drive back to downtown Golmud by evening. This is a long day of travel; if you feel dizzy or weak, pull over and rest immediately—don't push yourself. Day 3: Poplar Forest + off-the-beaten-path Gobi In the morning, head to the Golmud Poplar Forest. In autumn, the golden poplars rooted in the Gobi desert create an incredible atmosphere. It's very windy in the forest, so remember to bring wind protection. Take a leisurely stroll and snap some photos; plan for two to three hours. Return to the city for lunch. In the afternoon, find a nearby stretch of Gobi highway to walk along and experience the vast, uninhabited wilderness. No need to go far—just take it easy and leave time to pack your luggage. In the evening, you can buy some local specialties in the city before ending your trip. Travel tips Clothing: The temperature difference between day and night is huge. Be sure to pack a thick jacket; even in summer, it's cold in the mornings and evenings. A sun hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are essential, as the UV rays are extremely strong. Diet: Drink plenty of water and eat light meals. Avoid alcohol, and don't overeat when you first arrive. Transportation: Hiring a car or driving yourself is recommended, as many attractions are far from the city center and public transportation is inconvenient. Altitude sickness: Do not run or jump around. If you have a mild headache, rest more. If symptoms worsen, seek medical attention immediately. Supplies: Many sections of the road have no shops, so carry enough drinking water and snacks with you.

Want to avoid the crowds during the holidays but still find a peaceful place to spend three days? Here are 8 places I've filtered based on "less crowded, cheaper, and slower pace." Just pick one and go! 01 Wuxi | Jiangsu Nianhua Bay is best visited in the evening. ⏰ After 5 pm, the lights come on, and there are half the crowds compared to daytime. Buying tickets online a day in advance can save you the cost of a bowl of xiaolongbao (soup dumplings). Don't try to cram Lingshan Grand Buddha and the Three Kingdoms & Water Margin City into the same day; one is by Taihu Lake and the other is at the foot of the mountain. The taxi fare could cover the cost of two bowls of noodles. I recommend arriving at Huishan Ancient Town before 8 am. 📍 The tofu pudding stalls on Zhijie Street only operate until 9:30 pm; if you arrive late, you'll only find empty bowls. If you're taking the high-speed rail, both Wuxi Station and Wuxi East Station have direct subway lines to the city center. To get to Nianhua Bay, you can transfer to the Leyou Line 2 at Meiyuan Kaiyuan Temple Station, saving you 60-70 yuan compared to a taxi. For accommodation, chain hotels near Nanchang Street have more stable prices during the Mid-Autumn Festival than those inside the scenic area. You can also take an evening stroll along the ancient canal and grab a magnolia cake for a late-night snack. ⚠️ There are nighttime events at Lingshan around the Mid-Autumn Festival, but buses back to the city stop running early. Staying inside Nianhua Bay is expensive, while staying in Mashan Town is half the price. Also, guesthouses in Nianhua Bay should be booked at least two weeks in advance for the Mid-Autumn Festival; last-minute bookings will likely only have high-priced rooms left – don't ask me how I know. 02 Honghe|Yunnan The Yuanyang Rice Terraces are being irrigated during the Mid-Autumn Festival. ⏰ Arrive at the Duoyishu viewing platform half an hour before sunrise; the sea of clouds rolling in is worth the price. Don't just explore the main street of Jianshui Ancient City; 📍 the grilled tofu stalls on Lin'an Road are only 50 cents each, perfect for spending an afternoon with papaya juice. If you have enough time, you can stop by Mengzi for a bowl of Crossing-the-Bridge Rice Noodles. The train from Kunming to Mengzi takes an hour and a half, then you can transfer to another bus to Yuanyang – more comfortable than taking a bus the whole way. In Yuanyang, you can stay in either Duoyishu or Shengcun. Shengcun offers cheaper food, while Duoyishu allows you to watch the sunrise without having to get up early. A standard room during the Mid-Autumn Festival costs around 200-300 yuan; booking in advance can get you down to under 200 yuan. 🚄 The high-speed train from Kunming to Jianshui takes two hours. From Jianshui to Yuanyang, you can only hire a car or take a bus. The mountain roads are winding, so those prone to motion sickness should take medication beforehand. For the Zhu Family Garden and Confucian Temple in Jianshui Ancient City, buying a combined ticket online saves 10 yuan, but the queues on-site are longer than expected. ⚠️ Villagers will charge parking fees at the terraced field viewing platform; ask the price before parking, don't just hand over money without knowing. During the irrigation season, the field ridges are slippery, wear non-slip shoes, and don't step into the fields just to take photos; the villagers will stop you. 03 Shigatse|Tibet The Everest Base Camp gets below freezing on Mid-Autumn Festival nights. ⏰ You must pass through the Rongbuk Monastery checkpoint before 4 PM; otherwise, you won't be allowed in. In the morning, follow the locals on a circumambulation of Tashilhunpo Monastery. 📍 There's a teahouse on the hillside behind the monastery where a pot of sweet tea costs only two yuan, ten times cheaper than in the scenic area. Staying in the Jilin Road area of Shigatse city is the most convenient, with restaurants and shopping nearby. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, you can get a standard room for just over 100 yuan, much warmer than the tent hotels at Everest Base Camp. If you don't want the hassle of going to base camp, you can go to Gyantse to see Pelkor Chode Monastery and Dzong Fortress. The bus from Lhasa to Gyantse takes four hours, with fewer crowds and breathtaking scenery. 🚄 The high-speed train from Lhasa to Shigatse takes a little over two hours, but you need a separate border permit to go to Everest Base Camp. It's easiest to get one in your place of residence before departure. Taxis in Shigatse city generally start at ten yuan. You can walk to Tashilhunpo Monastery; don't be tricked by drivers into hiring a car. ⚠️ Altitude sickness is no joke. Stay overnight in Shigatse city to acclimatize; don't rush to base camp that day. Temperatures around Mid-Autumn Festival can drop to -5°C at night on Mount Everest, so don't skimp on down jackets and hand warmers. Renting a coat for 100 yuan is not cost-effective. 04 Haixi | Qinghai Choose either Chaka Salt Lake or Emerald Lake; the former is larger, the latter more vibrant. ⏰ The midday light is the harshest, but the salt lake's reflection makes it more beautiful. I recommend visiting Chaka Salt Lake in the evening; there are fewer people near Sky One, the small train costs 50 yuan one way, and it's only a 20-minute walk. The wind at Kunlun Pass is so strong it can blow your hat off. ⚠️ Don't buy so-called Kunlun jade from roadside vendors; those 10 yuan for three strings are just for show. If you're starting from Xining, you can take the Qinghai Lake—Chaka—Golmud route. During Mid-Autumn Festival, the rapeseed flowers at Qinghai Lake will be gone, but there will be fewer people. Staying in Heimahe to watch the sunrise is half the price of peak season. In Golmud city, stay near Bayi Road for convenient dining. A chartered car to Chaka Salt Lake costs about 400 yuan a day, while a shared ride costs just over 100 yuan per person. 🚄 Hiring a car around Golmud is the most convenient option. Staying in the city center is cheaper and warmer than staying near the salt lake. For Chaka Salt Lake, a package ticket including the mini-train is 20 yuan cheaper online; buying it on-site involves at least a half-hour wait. ⚠️ The temperature difference between day and night is significant in Haixi during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Short sleeves during the day and down jackets at night are not an exaggeration. Sunscreen and lip balm are essential; the salt lake's reflective surface can cause sunburn. 05 Shaoxing|Zhejiang Lu Xun's Former Residence and Shen Garden are adjacent. ⏰ Arrive at 7:30 am before the tour groups arrive; the alleyway near Sanwei Study is perfect for taking photos of empty spaces. Lanting is in the suburbs. 📍 There's a bamboo grove next to the stone at the winding stream; sitting there for half an hour is more comfortable than rushing. Visit Anchang Ancient Town in the evening; 🍜 sausages and braised duck hang under the eaves. Buy one and eat it while walking; it's more satisfying than ordering from a restaurant. From Shaoxing North Railway Station to Lu Xun's Former Residence, take BRT Line 1 for half an hour—faster and cheaper than a taxi. Stay in a guesthouse near Cangqiao Straight Street or Lu Xun's Former Residence; around 300 RMB during the Mid-Autumn Festival, you can find a traditional courtyard house with a patio. Try the Shaoxing rice wine, milk tea, and Kong Yiji fennel beans, but don't buy them on the main street of the scenic area; the prices are better in the alleys. ⚠️ The Shaoxing rice wine festival is very crowded. Stay in a guesthouse near Cangqiao Straight Street; you can walk back after exploring in the evening. There's a tourist bus between Lanting and Lu Xun's Former Residence, but it's infrequent; a taxi will cost around 30 RMB. Don't wait for the bus and feel like you're dying. 06 Fuzhou|Fujian Don't just walk along Nanhou Street in Sanfang Qixiang. ⏰ Turn into Yijin Lane and Wenru Lane; there are half the tourists, and the white walls and black tiles look cleaner in photos. 📍 The pot-side rice noodle shop at the entrance of Guanglu Lane only operates in the morning; with fried dough sticks, it's 6 RMB and you'll be full. If you have enough time, you can stroll around Shangxiahang. It's quieter than Sanfang Qixiang when the lights come on in the Mid-Autumn Festival evening, and sitting by the river is very comfortable. Staying near Dongjiekou or Nanmendou subway stations in Fuzhou is the most convenient. Budget hotels are around 200 RMB during the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the starting price for trips to Yantaishan and Shangxiahang is just around the corner. Don't eat Buddha Jumps Over the Wall in the scenic area; just go to the Juchunyuan main branch and order a small portion to try it out. The lychee pork and fried liver sold at roadside shops are more authentic. 🚄 Fuzhou Railway Station subway goes directly to Dongjiekou. It's a ten-minute walk from the station to the alley entrance, faster than taking a taxi. The former residences of Yan Fu and Lin Juemin in Sanfang Qixiang are free, but you need to make a reservation in advance through their official WeChat account; on-site reservations are often full. ⚠️ Fuzhou is still hot around the Mid-Autumn Festival. In the afternoon, around 2 or 3 pm, escape to a teahouse in the alley, order a pot of jasmine tea, and sit until sunset before going out for a stroll. Yantaishan is best visited in the evening; the old villas and river breeze are ten times more comfortable than the scorching daytime sun. 07 Handan | Hebei Guangfu Ancient City is best visited in the morning. ⏰ Rent a bicycle at the foot of the city wall and cycle around; it's more flexible than taking an electric scooter and costs 30 yuan cheaper. Wa Huang Palace is in Shexian County. 📍 The cable car up the mountain has long queues; if you have the stamina, hike the Eighteen Bends, which takes about 40 minutes to reach the top. In Handan city, stay near Congtai Park. In the evening, you can stroll along Huiche Lane and Chuancheng Street. Budget hotels are around 100 yuan during the Mid-Autumn Festival. For food, go to the Heping Road Night Market; donkey meat sandwiches and bean curd soup are all-you-can-eat for 10 yuan. If you're driving, you can spend a whole day visiting Guangfu Ancient City and Wa Huang Palace, but the mountain roads in Shexian are difficult to drive at night, so it's recommended to stay in Shexian County and return the next day. 🍜 The crispy fish and donkey meat sausage in the ancient city are worth trying, but don't buy them on the main street; turn into the alleys and you can get half the price. A separate ticket is required to climb the city wall of Guangfu Ancient City; buying a combined ticket online is 15 yuan cheaper, buying individually on-site is not cost-effective. ⚠️ There are buses from Handan city center to Guangfu, but the frequency is low. Driving or carpooling is more convenient. Remember to budget for gas during the Mid-Autumn Festival as the highway is not toll-free. There's a temple fair at Wa Huang Palace during the Mid-Autumn Festival; it's crowded but lively. Arrive before 8 AM to avoid the crowds. 08 Leshan | Sichuan Emei Mountain is less crowded during the Mid-Autumn Festival than during the National Day holiday. ⏰ Take the first sightseeing bus to Leidongping at 6 AM for a higher chance of seeing the sea of clouds at the Golden Summit. Don't queue to get off at the Leshan Giant Buddha via the Nine-Bend Plank Road. 📍 Take a boat tour for a panoramic view; it only takes half an hour and avoids the crowds. Stay near Zhanggongqiao or Shangzhongshun in Leshan. Guesthouses are around 200 RMB during the Mid-Autumn Festival, and there are food streets right outside in the evening, making it more convenient than staying near the scenic area entrance. If you have enough time, you can take the high-speed train to Qianwei and then the Jiayang Steam Train. The "Miner's Train" has fewer services during the Mid-Autumn Festival, so check the timetable in advance to avoid a wasted trip. 🍜 The "Qiaojiao Beef" and "Sweet Skin Duck" at Zhanggongqiao Food Street are a feast for two people for 100 RMB. The high-speed train from Leshan to Emei Mountain takes only about ten minutes, faster than the bus. However, the sightseeing bus from the Emei Mountain scenic area entrance to Leidongping requires a separate ticket, so don't get them mixed up. ⚠️ Buy your Emei Mountain entrance ticket and sightseeing bus ticket separately. Staying overnight on the mountain is expensive and damp; staying near Baoguo Temple at the foot of the mountain offers better value. The temperature at the Golden Summit during the Mid-Autumn Festival is close to zero degrees Celsius in the morning. Renting a coat costs 50 yuan, but bringing your own windbreaker is more economical. Of these 8 places, I most want to revisit Shaoxing and Leshan. One allows for leisurely exploration, and the other offers a feast. Where are you planning to go for the Mid-Autumn Festival? Let's chat in the comments. If you don't want to see crowds during the holidays but still want to find a place to relax and enjoy three days, here are 8 places I've filtered based on "less crowded, cheaper, and slower pace."
