Eckernförde, a port town in northern Germany
Eckernförde is a city in the northern part of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
It's a quiet, open-air port town!
Take the Kiel-Flensburg railway and get off at Eckernförde station. It's about a 10-minute walk to the coast.
You can even see the chocolates being made by hand at the nearby candy and chocolate shop, Chocolate Hermann Hinrichs!
If you're in the area, this is a place you should definitely stop by, with its colorful buildings and local restaurants!
In winter, it's windy, so be sure to bring some cold weather gear!

The Stranger Who Fixed My Chain in Berlin’s Tiergarten
#kindnessontheroad Berlin’s Tiergarten is a green lung in the heart of the city, but navigating its winding paths can be tricky, especially when your bike decides to break down miles from the nearest repair shop. During my last trip to Berlin, I rented a city bike near Hauptbahnhof—costing me €12 for the day, paid via a simple app that required a €50 deposit held on my credit card. I was cruising along the Spreeweg path, enjoying the view of the Siegessäule (Victory Column), when I heard the dreaded "clank" of my chain snapping off the gears.
I pulled over into the gravel beside the path, feeling frustrated. It was a Sunday afternoon, and while the park was busy with joggers and families, nobody seemed to notice my struggle. After about ten minutes of futile attempts to reconnect the greasy links with my bare hands, a man in his fifties, wearing muddy hiking boots and a reflective safety vest, stopped his own bike. He didn't speak much English, just gestured if I needed help.
He pulled out a small multi-tool from his saddlebag—something I hadn't thought to bring—and got to work. While he fixed the chain, he pointed to the "Radweg" (bike path) signs, explaining in broken English that this specific stretch often causes chains to slip due to the sharp incline near the Bismarck statue. He reattached the chain, tested the gears twice, and even tightened a loose bolt on my back wheel. When I offered him €5 for his trouble, he waved it away, smiled, and said, "Berlin is for cyclists; we help each other." He then gave me a tip I found invaluable: avoid the main east-west paths during peak hours and stick to the quieter loops around the Neuer See lake to avoid chain strain. His kindness turned a potential disaster into a memorable interaction, reminding me that the best part of traveling isn't the sights, but the people who help you see them.

Eckernförde, Husum, and the surrounding coastal nature reserves in Germany, beautiful beaches
Eckernförde, Husum, and the surrounding coastal nature reserves (such as the Wester-Spätinge marshlands and the iconic Wadden Sea National Park)
form an exceptional maritime trail across the Schleswig-Holstein peninsula.
Stretching from the calm Baltic Sea fjord in the east to the raw, wind-swept North Sea tidal flats in the west, this region perfectly contrasts tranquil beach life with dramatic tidal nature.
Eckernförde: The Baltic Fjord and Seaside Jewel
Nestled directly at the end of the Eckernförde Bay (Eckernförder Bucht), this over 700-year-old harbor town offers a quintessential, relaxed Baltic Sea lifestyle.
The Soft Sandy Shore: Unlike the tidal North Sea, Eckernförde boasts a continuous, 4-kilometer-long stretch of fine, white-sand beach right next to the city center.
It is lined with traditional wicker beach chairs (Strandkörbe) and calm waters ideal for families and swimming.
Husum: The Colorful North Sea Town of Storms
Perched on the edge of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea,
Husum is a historic trading town famously nicknamed the "Grey City by the Sea" by its most celebrated son, author Theodor Storm. Far from grey, the town is exceptionally vibrant today.
Coastal Nature Reserves: The Wild Amphibious Landscape
The coast surrounding Husum and stretching out toward the islands (like the rail-connected Westerland on Sylt) is defined by some of Europe's most heavily protected wetland habitats.
I went to the Westerland on Salt by train.
