Rouen: Three Reasons Why I Wanted to Visit. Expectation vs. Reality I'd long dreamed of seeing those half-timbered houses, but it never happened. For some reason, I was sure there were plenty of them in Germany, but I never saw them in the spring. So, when we started planning a vacation in Normandy, Rouen became a must-see. Not only is it the capital of the Normandy region, but it's also the "French capital" of half-timbered houses. Just what I needed! And then other facts began to fall into place: it's the "Gothic capital" of France, and it was in Rouen, then the center of English power in the French kingdom, that Joan of Arc was tried and executed on May 30, 1431. We got to Rouen by direct train from Paris's Gare Saint-Lazare; the journey takes just over an hour. I thought you could easily spend a couple of days in Rouen, with plenty to see and enjoy. But you can also plan a short half-day itinerary covering the main points (as we did, since there was another city, Dieppe, ahead) – and it will also be enjoyable and unhurried! I sometimes feel like I like a city right away when I leave the train station. Rouen, on the other hand, is immediately very friendly, very welcoming, and makes you feel very comfortable! Joan of Arc's Tower greets visitors literally right outside the train station. Many people think that this is where she awaited her execution for two years, but no. This tower is just what remains of the fortress where she was held, and that's all. Half-timbered Houses But half-timbered houses, half-timbered houses – that's exactly what I was aiming for! There are over 2,000 half-timbered houses in Rouen, and most of them are ancient. I'll tell you briefly what half-timbered houses are. The foundations of half-timbered houses, and often the first floor as well, are made of stone. Long horizontal beams are laid on this foundation to distribute the load, and the posts and vertical beams are attached to them. The space between the beams is filled with adobe (a mixture of clay soil, straw, lime, and water, sometimes with sand or cow hair added) – but depending on the region where it was built, adobe can be replaced with sandstone, limestone rubble, and terracotta or mud bricks. We're walking along the central pedestrian street and see a window open in one of these houses upstairs, and rescuers are unfolding a ladder. Like true tourists, we stop to watch. Time passes, but they're in no hurry. It was only when I approached to inquire what was going on that the rescuers explained to me that they were practicing "pulling a grandmother from an upper floor on a stretcher," and not a single grandmother was hurt. Joan of Arc As we remember, Rouen is inextricably linked with Joan of Arc—even the local candy is called "Joan of Arc's Tears." We couldn't help but notice the square where she was burned. The square's dominant feature is the church. It's impossible to fit it all into the frame, but somehow it managed to fit. It's believed that the church was built to resemble a bonfire, but this hasn't been officially confirmed. The inside, by the way, is also interesting—something between a cathedral (due to the stained glass) and a lecture hall. Gothic It's no wonder Rouen is considered the Gothic capital of France: Notre Dame is magnificent. And not just one; there are several cathedrals here! Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the main cathedral (it was closed until lunchtime on the day of our arrival), but even just looking at it from the outside was priceless! We then went into the other two—they weren't gloomy, and, you know, somehow sublime. It's nice to be inside, even when you're absorbing all the ancient history. Overall, I really liked Rouen; it even exceeded my expectations. I was expecting a simple city with beautiful houses. But here, the houses are more than just pretty, and the city is friendly. And there's also Gothic architecture, and Joan of Arc... I'd happily return if I have the opportunity/need/possibility! I recommend it to you too!

Rouen has this layered atmosphere where you keep stumbling upon history while just doing normal things. ✨Étretat✨ Étretat is all about the cliffs and the views. Hiking up from the town takes about 15 minutes, and once you’re on top, the scenery is breathtaking — white chalk cliffs dropping into turquoise water, with arches and rock formations that are famous for a reason. The trails are not difficult, but bring good shoes and be ready for wind. I found it one of the most stunning spots in Normandy and worth every step of the climb. ✨Véules-les-Roses✨ This little village is officially listed as one of the most beautiful in France, and you see why as soon as you arrive. It’s got the shortest river in the country running right through it, lined with old mills, gardens, and stone houses. Walking along the river to the sea is really charming, and the beach adds a nice touch. It’s small, but that’s part of the charm — it feels cozy and very picturesque without being overwhelming. ✨Jumièges Abbey✨ The ruins of Jumièges Abbey are some of the most atmospheric I’ve seen. Even though it’s partly collapsed, the scale of the stone walls and arches still impresses you. There’s also an exhibition in the old abbey dwelling that gives more context about its history. After walking the ruins, the surrounding village is nice for a short stroll, with the church and cemetery worth a look. It’s a peaceful stop that feels both historic and calm. ✨Lyons-la-Forêt✨ Lyons-la-Forêt is a picture-perfect village surrounded by woodland, and it honestly feels like stepping into a postcard. The half-timbered houses are beautifully kept, and the central market square is lovely with its old wooden hall. It’s a great place for a relaxed lunch or coffee in one of the small restaurants. Because it’s right in the forest, the village has a fresh, green atmosphere that makes it stand out compared to the coastal towns.

What a lovely hotel! We booked it just a day in advance. Traveling by train from Rouen to Paris, we arrived at Saint-Lazare station, only an 8-minute walk from the hotel. The Champs-Élysées is around a 20-minute walk, and there are plenty of nearby restaurants. Though we arrived 30 minutes before check-in, we were welcomed to wait in the lobby, where free snacks and non-alcoholic drinks were offered. The room’s minibar was free as well. Another fantastic perk was that the room key granted access to other hotels in the same chain, where complimentary snacks and drinks were available too. The hotel was impeccably clean, and the entire chain had a modern and inviting vibe. I’ve stayed in many city hotels recently, but this was both the cleanest and my favorite. We had a privilege room (2 adults and one child), and though the view could've been better, the room was spacious enough. The two-person room had a nice balcony as well (see picture). Breakfast was quite good too.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our guide, Galina Masson, for an impeccable 5-day tour of Normandy. It was an immersive dive into the culture and gastronomy of the region, masterfully organized by a top-class professional. Over five days, we experienced all the main treasures: from Claude Monet's house in Giverny to Gothic Rouen, aristocratic Deauville, and the cliffs of Étretat. The highlight was the visit to Mont-Saint-Michel, where Galina helped us truly feel the magic of this place. The gastronomic program particularly stood out. Who understands, family! To save trouble, I signed up for a group tour before going to France. After returning, I just want to say: never join a group tour! Shopping stops, rushing around like a duck, staying in the suburbs—these harsh truths can save at least one person. The plan was to leave at 9 AM, but we waited until 9:30 for everyone to arrive. The Louvre visit was limited to 40 minutes. Just after seeing the Mona Lisa, we had to leave. The advertised “four-star hotel in the city center” turned out to overlook a suburban parking lot. For me, this town in French Normandy has always been associated with Rouen Cathedral in Claude Monet's paintings. How many did he paint? 30? And the main thing in these paintings isn't the cathedral, but color. The moment—that's what mattered to Monet. Morning or evening, rain or fog, Monet presented the cathedral as yellow, blue, or pink. In reality, this one of the most significant Gothic buildings in the world seemed too huge, cold, and soulless to me. It's better to look at Monet's paintings than my photo. Not far from Notre Dame in Rouen is an amazing clock with a single hour hand, on which sits the figurine of a golden ram (wool was Rouen's main wealth). And who needed a minute hand back then, when it took five days to get to Paris. And there's another event in Rouen's history that it would like to forget like a bad dream: here in the market square on May 30, 1431, Joan of Arc, the inspiration for the French Resistance, was burned at the stake. 📅 Itinerary Day1:Checked in to B&B Hotel Rouen Centre Rive Droite(early but not a problem) plenty of parking. Went for a walk around Rouen to the Cathedral and found the tomb containing the heart of Rishars the Lion heart. Walked along the Seine and had a beer in Carla, overlooking the river, and a meal there too. Day2: After an amazing breakfast, drove to Giverny. Sadly already overbooked online so had to queue for an hour but wonderful to see the gardens and house of the famous impressionist painter Claude Monet. Spent the entire day there as many things to see. Day3: Another great buffet style breakfast then drove 7.5miles to Parc Animalier de Roumare in the FORÊT DOMANIALE DE ROUMARE. Here there is an ani.al.encloser around which you can take a triangular walk and see wild boar, Fallow Deer, Stags and squirrels in there natural habitat! The walk is level and easy going on tarmac, with level viewpoints off the road to view the animals. The walk is 3km and is very pleasant with many seats to enjoy the ambience. We then drove to Barneville-sur-Seine vie a free ferry across the Seine between Sahurs and La Bouille, for a magnificent lofty view of a curve in the Seine. After that, another drive 26 miles this time, to a place where Monet did a painting of Rouen, overlooking it and again the Seine, at Colline Saint Catherine.
