For the first time, we are going to take an automated bus, and we are excited about it. We will catch it from the end of the No. 9 Tube line to go to Terminal 3. It leaves every 30 minutes. 🔔 Only 6 people can board, and if you have large luggage, you cannot access it. The seats are comfortable and secure, and they have seatbelts. 🚍 The ride is pleasant, and I get a thrill thinking about how many times I have seen and read about this moment in sci-fi books—and now I am experiencing it.🖊️ As an ecological science fiction writer, I was very excited about this moment; I would say that one of the reasons I wanted to travel to China was to try the automated bus. And wow, I felt so safe and inspired. I noted how the future can be safer if we leave many human decisions to technology. If you want to enjoy this experience in more touristy areas, you have other active autonomous (self-driving) bus services operating in Guangzhou, the city has multiple driverless minibus routes operated by technology companies such as WeRide and Pony.ai. Some of the notable services include: 📍 Yuexiu District City Center Route: A 13.6-kilometer autonomous bus route that operates as a loop in the downtown core. It connects major landmarks like Meidong Road Terminal, Dongjun Plaza, Yuexiu Bridge, and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. 📍 Canton Tower Loop: A popular 9-kilometer route running daily around the iconic Canton Tower area. 📍 Other Areas: Additional autonomous routes operate in areas such as Guangzhou International Bio Island, Pazhou, Haizhu, Tianhe, and Huangpu District. ✅ Dream fulfilled: writing on an automaton bus in the style of Asimov. 🛫 Flights you can take from Terminal 3 at Baiyun Airport, Guangzhou: 🇻🇳 Vietnam 🇰🇬 Kirguistán: Bishkek 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan: Almaty and Astana 🇰🇭 Cambodia: Direct flight to Sihanoukville. 🇸🇬 Singapore. 🇫🇮 Finland. 🇪🇸 Spain: Madrid. 🇦🇺 Australia: Routes to Darwin, Perth and Adelaide. 🇮🇳 India: Delhi and Kolkata. So many possibilities🌟 #chinatravel #guangzhou #travel2026 #autonomousvehicle #citydaytours

Helsinki surprised me with how much I could enjoy without constantly reaching for my wallet. I started at Senate Square, where the huge white Helsinki Cathedral makes an impressive backdrop, then wandered toward Esplanadi Park. It’s perfect for slowing down, watching people, and simply enjoying the city. One of my favorite stops was Oodi Central Library. It feels far more like a modern public living room than a traditional library, and the upper floor has great city views. For some greenery, I headed to Sibelius Park and walked around the famous Sibelius Monument. Later, I explored Seurasaari, where forest paths, wooden houses, and the Baltic shoreline made the city feel surprisingly far away. If you have extra time, Kaivopuisto Park is another easy choice for sea views, while Helsinki City Museum is great when you want some indoor history without paying admission. For me, Helsinki proved that a great day here doesn’t have to be expensive sometimes a good walk is enough. #helsinki #finland

When traveling to Helsinki, Finland, if you're looking to buy the most representative souvenirs, aside from the well-known Iittala and Marimekko, I highly recommend visiting a K-Supermarket. Initially, I just went in to grab some drinks and snacks, but to my surprise, I stumbled upon an extensive Moomin section inside. The variety of merchandise was far more complete than I had imagined, and the prices were much more affordable compared to tourist shops, making me linger for nearly an hour. For travelers who love Moomin, this place is like a mini treasure trove. You don't have to go out of your way to a specialty store to find a wide array of exclusive items all at once. The variety of goods is richer than expected Walking into the Moomin section, the first thing that caught my eye was an entire display wall with all sorts of items neatly arranged by category. Whether for gifting or personal collection, they are absolutely perfect. The items I spotted that day included: · Mugs, coffee cups, and glasses · Thermoses, water bottles, and travel tumblers · Chocolates, cookies, candies, and other snacks · Tea bags, coffee, and cocoa powder · Napkins and kitchen supplies · Canvas tote bags and eco-friendly reusable bags · Stationery, notebooks, and stickers · Fridge magnets, keychains, and other small souvenirs · Seasonal limited-edition packaging items The food section is particularly hard to resist. Many packages feature different character designs, and even if the treats inside are similar, the unique artwork makes you want to collect them all. Top recommendations on what to buy I ended up picking out a few items that I felt were the most worth buying. First is the Moomin chocolate. The packaging is delicate, the price is reasonable, and it makes a perfect little gift for colleagues or friends. Not only does it have a distinct Finnish touch, but it's also very easy to carry. Additionally, Moomin coffee and tea bags are highly popular souvenirs. Brewing a cup once you get home and seeing that familiar packaging will instantly bring back memories of your trip to Finland. It feels much more integrated into daily life than your typical souvenirs. If your luggage space permits, I also highly recommend picking up a mug. Though they require careful packing, the quality is fantastic, the designs are beautifully detailed, and using it every day will definitely brighten your mood. A comfortable shopping environment away from tourist crowds Compared to the souvenir shops in the city center, I much prefer the shopping vibe at K-Supermarket. The store is brightly lit, the products are displayed neatly, and there are no massive tourist crowds or pushy sales tactics, allowing you to browse at your own pace. Beyond Moomin merchandise, you can also conveniently stock up on Finnish chocolates, cookies, jams, oat products, and dairy items, getting all your souvenir shopping done in one fell swoop. I also noticed plenty of locals buying Moomin-branded goods, proving that these aren't just tourist trinkets—they are genuinely woven into the everyday lives of the Finnish people. Handy shopping tips If you plan on buying Moomin goodies at a K-Supermarket, keep these tips in mind: · It's best to buy them toward the end of your trip to avoid carrying the extra weight around. · Mugs can be safely wrapped in clothing and placed in the center of your suitcase. · Check the expiration dates on food items so you can enjoy them at a leisurely pace back home. · The product selection varies slightly from branch to branch, so if you see a design you love, snatch it up right then and there. · Keep an eye out during the holidays for limited-edition packaging, which has even higher collectible value. My honest review I used to think convenience stores and supermarkets were strictly for buying daily necessities. Little did I know that the Moomin section in K-Supermarket would turn out to be one of the biggest surprises of my Helsinki trip. It lacks the massive hype and crowdedness of specialty stores, yet offers a wealth of items that blend great design with practicality. Plus, the wallet-friendly prices let you shop comfortably within your budget. What I love the most is that these items are more than just adorable souvenirs; they truly reflect Finnish design aesthetics and lifestyle culture. Whether it's a mug, a bag of coffee, or a box of chocolates, you can feel the brand's thoughtful design details, allowing the memories of your trip to live on long after you've returned home. If you're a Moomin fan or simply searching for unique, practical Finnish souvenirs, I highly recommend carving out some time to visit a K-Supermarket in Helsinki. You might just walk in intending to buy a bottle of water and, like me, walk out with an entire haul of Moomin treasures, leaving you with the warmest, most healing shopping memories of your Finnish adventure.

I visited Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland and the officially recognized hometown of Santa Claus, nestled right on the Arctic Circle in northern Finland, and it was the most magical winter destination. As soon as I stepped off the plane, I was surrounded by a serene, snowy wonderland. My first priority was to head straight to Santa Claus Village, which is an enchanting complex full of charming, festive log cabins with roofs heavy with snow, all beautifully illuminated with twinkling warm lights, it felt like I had been transported directly into a heartwarming Christmas movie. I highly recommend spending time exploring the Christmas House, where you can actually meet the real Santa Claus himself; it's free to meet him, but a professional souvenir photo costs around €35-€50, which is an essential keepsake. For budgeting, a trip to Rovaniemi is on the pricier side: flights can range from €200 to €600, and accommodation in one of the unique, luxury glass igloos to view the Northern Lights will cost approximately €400 to €800 per night. If you’re looking to save money, consider staying in a hostel or a budget hotel closer to the city center for closer to €100 per night, and remember that many attractions within Santa Claus Village itself are free to enter. While Santa Claus Village was incredibly enchanting with its snow-covered paths and festive spirit, I knew my trip wouldn't be complete without experiencing the iconic, traditional Lapland activity of a reindeer sleigh ride. After navigating through the charming village streets, where I even spotted that classic red directional sign leading directly to Santa Claus Village and the main entrance to meet Santa himself, I found a local reindeer farm offering these authentic experiences. The cost for a short, charming 1-kilometer reindeer sleigh ride starts at about €20 for adults, while longer, more extensive farm visits that include learning deeply about Sámi reindeer herding and feeding the gentle animals can range between €70 and €100 for a 2-3 hour immersive tour. For me, snug in a traditional wooden sleigh lined with cozy reindeer skins, being pulled gracefully by a strong, magnificent reindeer through the tranquil, ancient, pine forests heavy with deep snow was an absolutely magical and unforgettable highlight. The peaceful sounds of the reindeer’s bells jingling and the gentle crunch of snow under the runners made me feel genuinely transported into another world, allowing me to disconnect and fully absorb the quiet, breathtaking beauty of the Arctic wilderness. A typical 5-day trip to Rovaniemi for one person, including comfortable middle-range accommodation and flights, might average around €1500 to €2500, but there are definitely ways to reduce costs by being a savvy traveler! Besides the indispensable reindeer experience and meeting Santa, I also enjoyed a exhilarating husky safari, which costs approximately €150-€200 per person, and a thrilling evening tour to search for the spectacular Northern Lights for around €100-€150. For budgeting, I found that you can easily save money on dining by grabbing lunch at one of the lovely casual restaurants in Santa Claus Village, which typically costs about €15-€25 per person, or by choosing affordable, cozy Finnish eateries in the Rovaniemi city center. Don't forget that simply enjoying the peaceful forest trails or witnessing the magnificent, natural display of the Northern Lights during the evening requires absolutely zero cost, making those incredible moments even more rewarding! All in all, my trip was an unforgettable blend of pure, joyful childhood nostalgia and stunning natural Arctic wonders, and I highly recommend experiencing this magical wonderland for yourself! #Rovaniemi #SantaClausVillage #VisitLapland #ReindeerSleighRide #FinlandTravel #WinterWonderland #TravelLapland #NorthernLightsFinlandd

#photovsrealitytravel If you are planning a trip to hunt the Northern Lights, here is a little reality check nobody warns you about: the naked eye vs. phone camera paradox. When I looked up into the Lapland night sky, all my eyes could see was what looked like a faint, wispy white cloud moving slowly across the stars. Honestly, it was a bit confusing at first! ☁️🤔 But the second you pull out your phone and point the camera? BOOM. Absolute magic. The lens catches the spectacular, vibrant neon greens and deep purples that the human eye struggles to process in the dark. Swipe through to see how the camera totally brought these quiet white ribbons to life above the pines! 🌲✨ It turns out your camera is your ultimate Aurora hunting partner. Even if it looks like a simple cloud to you, always test it with a quick long-exposure photo—you might just unlock a hidden masterpiece. ✈️ Have you ever caught the Northern Lights? There is something almost magical about autumn in Finland. As summer quietly fades, the forests begin to glow in shades of gold, amber, green, and deep red, while thousands of lakes become perfect mirrors for the changing landscape. These images capture that peaceful Finnish atmosphere beautifully—from the soft morning mist floating above a still lake to the warm autumn sunlight filtering through the trees. 🌅🍁 In the early hours, the water seems completely motionless, reflecting the forest and the textured clouds above it. A gentle veil of mist drifts across the surface, creating an almost dreamlike scene. As the sun rises higher, its golden light slips between the trees and paints the lake with shimmering reflections. Then comes the heart of Finnish autumn: birch trees turning brilliant yellow, surrounded by evergreen forests and quiet woodland lakes. Fallen and fading leaves frame the water, while the reflections create a second forest beneath the surface. And as evening arrives, Finland reveals another side of its beauty. The sky can transform into an extraordinary canvas of crimson, orange, pink, and violet, with the colors spreading across the calm lake like fire on glass. 🌄 Finland is often described as the Land of a Thousand Lakes, but in autumn, it feels like a land of endless reflections—where forests, clouds, sunlight, and water come together in perfect harmony. No crowds. No noise. Just the whisper of the forest, the stillness of the lake, and the changing colors of the northern season. This is Finland in autumn—quiet, golden, reflective, and unforgettable. 🇫🇮🍂 #Finland #AutumnInFinland #FinnishAutumn #VisitFinland #LandOfATThousandLakes #FinnishNature #AutumnColors #ForestAndLake #NaturePhotography #LakeReflections #GoldenAutumn #NordicNature #Scandinavia #TravelFinland #AutumnMagic

#planitorwingit Helsinki is the kind of city that made me want to leave some time completely unplanned. 🇫🇮✨ I started my day slowly, waking up without rushing and enjoying a relaxed breakfast at my hotel. ☕️🥐 Once I was ready, I headed out with no strict schedule and simply wandered through the city at my own pace. I stopped by a cute Moomin café, then explored the local market, browsing Finnish foods and little treats along the way. 🧸🛍️ From there, I walked toward the seaside market, enjoying the fresh breeze, colorful stalls, and relaxed atmosphere by the water. 🌊 Instead of trying to see everything, I just followed whatever caught my eye, stopped for photos, and enjoyed the little discoveries along the way. Somehow, having nothing planned made the day feel even more special. Winter completely changes the way I see a destination. I’ve traveled to a few cold weather countries, but three stood out for very different reasons. Finland was probably the most magical. I stayed around Rovaniemi, where everything looked like a Christmas postcard. I also spent time in Levi, surrounded by snowy forests, and had one of those unforgettable evenings waiting for the Northern Lights. The cold was intense, but somehow I didn’t mind. Japan gave me a completely different winter experience. Sapporo was my favorite, especially with its snowy streets and warm bowls of ramen waiting everywhere. I also loved visiting Otaru, where the quiet canals looked beautiful under the snow. A winter trip to Hakuba would be perfect if you’re into skiing. Then there’s Switzerland. I took the train through the Alps and spent time around Zermatt and Lucerne. Seeing the mountains covered in snow from a train window was honestly one of the highlights of my trip. If I had to pick just one, I’d choose Finland for the atmosphere. But for scenery, Japan and Switzerland are hard to beat. #finland #rovaniemi #japan #sapporo #switzerland #zermatt

Helsinki felt calmer than I expected. I arrived thinking I’d spend most of my time sightseeing, but I ended up enjoying the city’s slower rhythm just as much as its landmarks. 1. Start at the harbor I wandered through Market Square, grabbing a warm snack before walking toward Helsinki Cathedral. The white façade looked especially striking against the blue sky, and the surrounding streets were perfect for exploring on foot. 2. Visit Suomenlinna I took a short ferry to Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, and this quickly became my favorite part of the trip. I walked along the old fortifications, explored tunnels, and stopped by the waterfront to watch the boats. It felt like a mini escape from the city. 3. Slow down like a local I visited Temppeliaukio Church, carved directly into rock, then spent the afternoon around Esplanadi Park. Later, I wandered through Design District Helsinki, browsing small shops and cafés before ending the day with a Finnish sauna. What stayed with me was how comfortable Helsinki felt. It wasn’t trying to overwhelm me with attractions. Instead, the city gave me room to breathe, walk, eat, and simply enjoy the surroundings. If I returned, I’d spend less time planning and more time by the water. Helsinki seems to reward that kind of trip. #helsinki #finland

#photovsrealitytravel Imagine standing beneath a dark Arctic sky as waves of green, pink and purple light dance above you. ✨ The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are one of the world’s most spectacular natural phenomena. But seeing them isn’t simply about traveling north — you need the right combination of darkness, clear skies, location and solar activity. So, where should you go? 🌍👇 🇳🇴 1. NORWAY | Tromsø One of the world’s most iconic Northern Lights destinations. 📍 Tromsø ✨ Fjords + Arctic landscapes + Aurora 🐕 Dog sledding • Snowmobiling • Sámi experiences Tromsø is perfect if you want to combine the Aurora with a wide range of Arctic activities. 💫 Best for: First-time Aurora hunters who want adventure, nature and a lively Arctic city. ⸻ 🇫🇮 2. FINLAND | Finnish Lapland What could be more magical than watching the Northern Lights from a glass-roofed cabin? ✨ 📍 Rovaniemi • Ivalo • Inari • Saariselkä ✨ Glass igloos + snowy forests + reindeer + Aurora Finnish Lapland is famous for its winter wonderland atmosphere and unique accommodation experiences. 💫 Best for: Couples, photographers and anyone looking for a fairytale Arctic escape. ⸻ 🇸🇪 3. SWEDEN | Abisko & Kiruna Looking for a quieter and more nature-focused experience? 📍 Abisko • Kiruna ✨ Mountains + wilderness + stars + Aurora Abisko is particularly famous for its relatively favorable conditions for Northern Lights viewing. 💫 Best for: Travelers who want fewer crowds and a peaceful Arctic adventure. ⸻ 🇮🇸 4. ICELAND | Aurora + Volcanic Landscapes Iceland gives you much more than the Northern Lights. One night you could be watching the Aurora, and the next day exploring waterfalls, glaciers, black-sand beaches and volcanic landscapes. 🌋❄️ 📍 Reykjavík • North Iceland • Rural Iceland ✨ Aurora + waterfalls + glaciers + volcanoes 💫 Best for: Travelers who want to experience several incredible natural wonders in one trip. ⸻ 🇨🇦 5. CANADA | Yukon & Northwest Territories Ready to go beyond Europe? Canada offers vast landscapes, dark skies and a truly wild Arctic atmosphere. 📍 Yukon • Northwest Territories ✨ Wilderness + endless skies + Aurora 💫 Best for: Adventurers looking for a remote and unforgettable experience. ⸻ 🇬🇱 6. ALASKA | The Wild Side of the Aurora Alaska combines Northern Lights viewing with some of the world’s most dramatic wilderness. 📍 Fairbanks ✨ Aurora + wildlife + mountains + Arctic adventures 💫 Best for: Nature lovers, photographers and adventure seekers. ⸻ 🌌 BUT HOW DO THE NORTHERN LIGHTS ACTUALLY FORM? The Aurora Borealis occurs when charged particles from the Sun interact with Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere. 💚 Green is the most common color, but strong auroral displays can also appear in shades of pink, purple, red and blue. And here’s the important part: ❌ The Northern Lights don’t appear every night. ❌ Winter doesn’t guarantee an Aurora. ❌ Being in an Arctic destination doesn’t guarantee a sighting. You need: 🌑 Dark skies ☁️ Clear weather ☀️ Solar activity 📍 A good viewing location ⸻ 🗓️ WHEN IS THE BEST TIME? The Northern Lights can generally be seen during the darker months of the year. 🇫🇮 Finland → Late August–early April 🇸🇪 Sweden → September–March 🇳🇴 Norway → Autumn–early spring But remember: clear skies can be just as important as solar activity. A strong Aurora happening behind thick clouds is still invisible. ☁️ ⸻ 🧳 WHAT SHOULD YOU PACK? 🧥 Thermal layers 🧤 Warm gloves 🧦 Thermal socks 🥾 Waterproof winter boots 🔋 Power bank 📱 Aurora forecast app 📷 Camera or phone capable of night photography And most importantly… ⏳ PATIENCE. The Aurora isn’t a scheduled show. You might wait for hours and suddenly, for a few magical minutes, the entire sky comes alive. 🌌 ⸻ 🏆 WHICH EXPERIENCE WOULD YOU CHOOSE? 🇳🇴 Norway → Fjords + Aurora 🇫🇮 Finland → Glass igloo + Aurora 🇸🇪 Sweden → Abisko + wilderness 🇮🇸 Iceland → Volcanoes + Aurora 🇨🇦 Canada → Wilderness + Aurora 🇬🇱 Greenland → Icebergs + Aurora 🇺🇸 Alaska → Adventure + Aurora 💬 If you could choose only ONE, where would you go? 🇳🇴 Norway 🇫🇮 Finland 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇮🇸 Iceland 🇨🇦 Canada 🇬🇱 Greenland 🇺🇸 Alaska 📌 Save this post for your future Northern Lights adventure. #NorthernLights #AuroraBorealis #Aurora #Travel #TravelInspiration #BucketList #Norway #Finland #Sweden #Iceland

When visiting Helsinki, Finland, my favorite thing to do isn't rushing through a packed itinerary of tourist attractions, but rather setting aside an afternoon for a leisurely stroll through the city. Unlike some crowded European metropolises, Helsinki boasts spacious streets and minimalist architecture. With the sea breeze sweeping in from the harbor, walking here has a comfortable and unhurried rhythm. It's only after a proper walk around that you realize this city is best explored on foot. This city walk can kick off at Helsinki Central Station. The station itself is an architectural marvel well worth admiring, with its massive granite facade and distinctive statues making it highly recognizable. Leaving the station, there's no need to rush. As you wander along the downtown streets toward Senate Square, you'll pass cafes, local shops, gliding trams, and residents going about their daily routines. It feels less like sightseeing and more like genuinely slipping into the local way of life. Senate Square and Helsinki Cathedral Approaching Senate Square, your eyes are naturally drawn to the towering white structure—Helsinki Cathedral. The gleaming white walls and striking green domes are especially vibrant on sunny days, forming one of the city's most iconic landscapes. Standing in the middle of the square, you can take in architecture from different eras in a wonderfully open space. It's the perfect spot to linger for a bit rather than just snapping photos and dashing off. Taking a seat on the steps and watching the crowds go by is a great way to soak up that unique, laid-back Nordic vibe. Strolling Down to the Harbor Continuing from Senate Square toward the waterfront, you'll quickly notice the cityscape shifting. The street-side buildings remain neatly lined, but the air starts to carry the scent of the sea and a fresh, breezy chill. Once you reach Helsinki Market Square, you can browse through local stalls selling fresh food, flowers, handicrafts, and various Finnish specialties. It’s not as chaotic as larger tourist markets. On a nice day, grabbing a cup of coffee or a light snack nearby and sitting by the harbor to relax is, to me, the most comfortable way to travel. If you have plenty of time, you can keep walking along the coastline. Watching the boats sail in and out of the harbor, then looking back at the urban skyline, you’ll discover that Helsinki perfectly balances two contrasting atmospheres: the bustling city and the serene ocean. Favorite Details Along the Way What left the deepest impression on me during this stroll wasn't any single landmark, but the little details of everyday life I noticed along the way: · Trams weaving through the downtown streets, acting as a dynamic part of the cityscape. · The minimalist exteriors of the buildings that still exude a profound sense of design in their details. · Impeccably clean streets that make walking an absolute joy. · An abundance of cafes, perfect for finding a mid-walk resting spot. · The harbor's close proximity to the city center, offering ocean views without a long commute. · The dramatic shifts in lighting across the seasons—summers are ideal for extended evening walks, while winters offer a completely different, deeply quiet Nordic charm. Practical Tips for Your Walk If you plan to explore Helsinki on foot, I highly recommend not overpacking your schedule. The downtown attractions are fairly close to one another, so rather than rushing to check them all off your list, leave yourself some time to pause at a street corner you happen to like. With the long daylight hours in summer, it's a fantastic idea to plan your walk for the afternoon or even the early evening. However, the coastal winds can be quite brisk, so it’s always smart to carry a light jacket. If it rains, you can easily hop on a tram between walks—there's no need to force yourself to trek the whole way. Additionally, Finland's coffee culture is something you absolutely must experience. When your legs get tired, finding a cafe to sit in, enjoying a pastry, and watching the pedestrians and trams glide by outside the window will instantly slow down the pace of your trip. I think this is exactly where Helsinki's true charm lies. Final Travel Thoughts My biggest takeaway from this Helsinki stroll is simply how "comfortable" it felt. There was no exhaustion from chasing sights, nor the overwhelming, suffocating crowds typical of major tourist hubs. From the Central Station to Senate Square, and down to the harbor, every stretch of the journey offered a fresh perspective of the city. Helsinki isn't the kind of place where you need to cram every sight into a single day. Instead, it’s during a destination-less wander that its charm truly shines. Whether it's a passing tram, a gorgeous facade, or just a momentary gust of sea breeze against your face—these seemingly insignificant fragments ultimately become the most authentic and cherished memories of the trip. If it's your first time in Helsinki, I strongly suggest setting aside at least half a day with no transport and no rigid itinerary, just slowly discovering the city on foot. Starting from the station, moving past the cathedral and square to the harbor, and finally settling into a cafe to relax—it sounds incredibly simple, yet it allows you to genuinely experience the quiet, minimalist, and deeply lived-in side of the Finnish capital. For me, this is the most rewarding way to slow down and truly savor Helsinki.

The most unexpected part of my trip to Lahti, Finland, wasn't the sightseeing, but the simple BBQ I had at a lakeside hut. I initially thought it would just be a place to eat, but once I sat down by the lake, I realized how different the Finnish way of vacationing truly is. No bustling restaurants, no packed itineraries, just a wooden hut, a grill, an outdoor table, and the almost silent lake in front of me. Lahti is located in the Finnish Lake District, where lakeside huts, saunas, and outdoor activities are representative of the lifestyle. Experiencing it firsthand truly made me understand why Finns love spending time by the lake. 1. The Lakeside Hut Itself is the Most Beautiful Scenery Upon arriving at the hut, my first impression was "how peaceful it is." The wooden building blends seamlessly into the forest environment, the lake is just a few steps away, and you can occasionally see small boats passing by in the distance. There are simple wooden platforms or outdoor seating areas along the shore. The biggest difference from typical tourist attractions is the lack of a deliberately arranged "touristy" feel. It's precisely because of the lack of excessive artificial decoration that you can truly feel the charm of Finland's natural environment. Sitting by the lake, feeling the breeze and watching the sunlight slowly change the color of the water, I unconsciously put down my phone, which I had been holding the whole time. 2. The most fun part is doing your own BBQ. BBQ ingredients don't need to be complicated; the focus of a Finnish lakeside BBQ is enjoying the process. When preparing, you can choose: · Sausages, chicken, or beef, etc., suitable for grilling · Vegetables such as corn, mushrooms, and bell peppers · Bread or potatoes as side dishes · Simple salad and drinks · If you like Finnish flavors, you can also prepare local fish. After placing the ingredients on the grill, the most fun is the slow wait. The charcoal or firewood heats up, the food begins to smell delicious, and everyone chats while keeping an eye on the heat. There are no restaurant staff rushing you, and no next activity to rush through. That leisurely feeling of "today we're just here to eat by the lake" is a rare and precious experience during travel. 3. Dining by the lake is more comfortable than expected. The food is grilled and enjoyed outdoors. Simple sausages and grilled meats taste especially delicious by the lake. What I found most memorable wasn't any particular dish, but the entire environment. The lake, forest, cabins, and the aroma of grilled meat mingled together, occasionally punctuated by birdsong. There were no car horns like in the city, nor the noise of tourist areas. Sitting in a chair and daydreaming after your meal was even more relaxing than any specially planned tourist attraction. 4. If a sauna is available, I highly recommend combining it with the meal. Finnish lakeside huts are often combined with saunas, which I found to be a truly worthwhile experience. Many lakeside accommodations and resorts integrate sauna, lake, and outdoor activities. If your itinerary allows, you can arrange the itinerary as follows: Lakeside walk → BBQ → Sauna → Lakeside relaxation In summer, the lake area has long hours of sunshine, and it doesn't get dark quickly at night. After a BBQ, sitting by the lake chatting makes the time fly by. If your chalet has a private dock or boating facilities, you can take a stroll on the lake in the evening for a more complete experience. 5. Practical Tips For your first time planning a lakeside chalet BBQ, here are a few details to keep in mind: · Confirm whether BBQ equipment is provided, as policies vary by chalet. · Confirm whether firewood and charcoal are included in the price; don't wait until you arrive to find out you need to bring your own. · It's advisable to buy ingredients in advance; supermarkets are usually more convenient than tourist areas. · Even in summer, it's recommended to bring a light jacket, as the lakeside can be windy in the evenings, making it feel cooler than in the city. · Mosquito repellent is essential, as there may be more mosquitoes in the forest and lakeside environment. · Clean up the BBQ area before leaving; proper waste sorting and environmental cleanliness are very important in Finland. · If you plan to start a fire, be sure to follow the accommodation's and local fire regulations; avoid starting fires in prohibited areas. 6. My favorite thing was actually "doing nothing." The biggest takeaway from this Lahti lakeside BBQ trip was that travel doesn't have to be packed with sightseeing every day. Sometimes what truly makes a lasting impression is an afternoon spent sitting by the lake, slowly grilling meat; chatting around the grill; watching the sunset reflected on the lake after dinner; or simply not doing anything in particular, yet feeling time pass by comfortably. The Lahti lakeside huts gave me my first real experience of the natural lifestyle that Finns appreciate. There are no fancy tourist attractions, but there are forests, lakes, cabins, saunas, and fireplaces—a few simple elements are enough to create a truly complete vacation. If you travel to Finland, I highly recommend not just staying in Helsinki's city attractions. Allocate a day to the Lahti area, stay overnight in a lakeside hut, or have a BBQ. Especially in summer, sitting by the lake, enjoying the breeze, eating freshly grilled food, and gazing at the vast lake and forest, you can truly experience the most captivating rhythm of life in the Finnish Lake District. For me, this BBQ was more than just a meal; it was a true "living in the Finnish landscape" travel experience.

When traveling to Finland, besides reindeer meat and salmon soup, I highly recommend trying Karjalanpiirakka (Karelian pie) at least once. The first time I saw it, its appearance was quite simple: a thin pastry wrapping a rice filling, oval in the center, with pretty pleats around the edges. I initially thought it was just ordinary bread or a savory pie, but after taking the first bite, I discovered that this seemingly simple food actually represents Finnish traditional food culture. Karjalanpiirakka originated in the Karelian region of eastern Finland and is a very representative traditional Finnish food. It's not as elaborate as delicate desserts, but rather has a simple, warm, home-cooked feel. For travelers, trying it is not just about "eating delicious food," but rather about experiencing Finland through everyday cuisine. The most surprising thing about my first taste was the texture. I first tried Karjalanpiirakka for breakfast while traveling in Finland. It was still warm when I received it, the outer crust had a subtle baked aroma, and the rice filling was soft and moist. The most noticeable sensation upon biting into it is the interesting contrast between the outer layer and the filling: · Outer layer: Thin yet slightly chewy, with a subtly crispy edge. · Rice filling: Soft and creamy, with a subtle milky aroma and the natural flavor of the rice itself. · Overall flavor: Not overly seasoned, a mildly savory and pleasant taste. Its greatest characteristic is its "unobtrusive" flavor. There's no heavy sauce or excessive spices; instead, you slowly savor the natural flavors of the grains and the dough itself. A Must-Try Traditional Pairing If it's your first time trying Karjalanpiirakka, I highly recommend pairing it with munavoi (egg cream), a common Finnish dessert. Munavoi is typically made by chopping hard-boiled eggs and mixing them with butter, then spreading it on warm Karjalanpiirakka. The simple rice filling becomes instantly richer and more flavorful with the addition of munavoi. The first bite might seem simple, but it gets better with each bite. The aroma of eggs, butter, and rice combine perfectly, making it far from monotonous as you might expect. For me, this was the most memorable part of my entire Finnish culinary experience. Finnish Daily Food Culture What impressed me most about Karjalanpiirakka was that it wasn't just found in touristy restaurants, but was deeply intertwined with the daily lives of Finns. You can find different forms of Karjalanpiirakka in cafes, bakeries, and supermarkets. Some people enjoy it for breakfast, while others savor it with coffee in the afternoon. This simplicity, convenience, and versatility reflects the Finnish culinary culture's emphasis on natural ingredients and practicality. Sitting in a cafe while traveling, a hot coffee paired with a freshly heated Karjalanpiirakka—no fancy tableware or complicated dishes needed—allows you to experience the comfortable Finnish pace of life. Tips for Trying It If you want to experience this traditional dish while traveling in Finland, keep a few details in mind: · For your first time, it's recommended to eat it warm; the outer skin and rice filling will have a better texture. · It's best enjoyed with munavoi for a more classic flavor. · Perfect for breakfast or afternoon tea; doesn't necessarily require a formal meal. · Available in supermarkets, traditional bakeries, and cafes, usually at more affordable prices than restaurant meals. · It's more fun to buy different sizes or fillings to compare. · People who prefer savory food are generally more likely to enjoy it than those who prefer sweet food. A Food That Creates Travel Memories The most unforgettable foods from my travels are often not the most expensive or elaborate dishes, but those that truly allowed me to experience local life. Karjalanpiirakka is one of them. It doesn't have a fancy appearance; in fact, it looks somewhat simple at first glance. But it's precisely this simplicity that makes it easier to feel the authenticity and naturalness of Finnish food culture. From the thin crust and soft rice filling to the rich aroma of egg and cream, every bite is simple, yet it has the unique flavor of Finland. After trying it this time, I think it's worth adding Karjalanpiirakka to your itinerary when traveling to Finland. Instead of just taking photos at popular tourist spots, find a local bakery, order a warm Karelian pie and a cup of coffee, and sit down to enjoy it slowly. Watching the people on the street and experiencing the daily lives of the locals—these unplanned moments become the most authentic cultural experience of the trip. For me, Karjalanpiirakka is more than just a traditional Finnish dish; it's an entry point to understanding Finland. It's simple, warm, and unpretentious, just like the Finnish life I experienced on this trip: quiet yet charming, simple yet worth savoring.

During my first summer visit to Helsinki, Finland, what struck me most wasn't an overwhelming number of tourist attractions, but rather how perfectly suited the city is for slow travel. Four days and three nights might not seem like a long time, but by keeping your itinerary light, you can truly appreciate Helsinki's comfortable, serene, and design-forward atmosphere. Summer days here are gloriously long, with the sky staying bright much later than you'd expect. This generous daylight gives you ample time each day to stroll around, gaze at the sea, and wander through local markets. Even without rushing from one landmark to another, every day feels incredibly fulfilling. Day 1 | Arriving in Helsinki: Soaking in the City Center First I recommend dedicating your first day entirely to the city center and keeping your schedule relaxed. After arriving and dropping off your luggage at your accommodation, step out and explore the downtown area on foot. I absolutely love the scale of central Helsinki. Many of the key sights are close to one another, making it incredibly walkable. Starting from Helsinki Central Station and weaving through streets, boutiques, and squares, it’s remarkably easy to slip into the local rhythm of life. In the afternoon, make your way to Helsinki Cathedral and Senate Square. The pristine white cathedral, framed by the classical architecture surrounding the square, offers a quintessential first impression of Helsinki's cityscape. Bathed in abundant summer sunshine against a crisp blue sky, the buildings look exceptionally stunning. As evening approaches, take a leisurely stroll down by the harbor to enjoy the seaside views. Summer in Helsinki is perfect for evening walks—the sky remains luminous, so there's no need to rush back to your hotel. Meandering along the coastline is a wonderfully soothing way to travel. Day 2 | Markets, Libraries, and Urban Culture Reserve your second day for a more culturally immersive experience. Start your morning at Helsinki Central Library Oodi. Far more than a traditional library, Oodi is a vibrant, open public cultural space designed for everyone. The architecture itself is a masterpiece of modern design, featuring bright, expansive interiors where you'll find locals reading, working, and relaxing. Next, head over to the National Library of Finland (Kansalliskirjasto). In stark contrast to Oodi, the National Library exudes a profound sense of history and classical elegance. Stepping into the reading rooms, you are greeted by intricate architectural details and an atmosphere of hushed reverence. This isn't a place for snapping a quick photo and leaving; I highly suggest taking a moment to sit down and soak in Finland’s deep appreciation for reading and knowledge. For lunch, wander down to the harbor-side market to forage for local delicacies or grab some simple street food. Dining outdoors in the summer is an absolute delight here. While you eat, you can browse the stalls selling regional treats, fresh seasonal berries, and charming souvenirs. Day 3 | An Island Getaway and Finnish Summer Vistas On the third day, set your sights on the sea fortress of Suomenlinna. Taking the ferry from downtown Helsinki to Suomenlinna is a delightfully fun experience in itself. The ride is short, but looking back at the Helsinki skyline from the water while enjoying the fresh sea breeze perfectly captures the essence of a Nordic summer. Suomenlinna covers a surprisingly large area, so wear a comfortable pair of shoes and take your time exploring the island’s winding trails. Along the way, you'll discover ancient stone walls, historic artillery, rustic buildings, and sweeping coastal vistas—a seamless blend of historical heritage and natural beauty. Visiting in the summer is particularly enchanting. On a clear day, the striking contrast between the vibrant sea and the sky is breathtaking. Don't just treat Suomenlinna as another spot to check off your list. The most rewarding thing to do here is to find a quiet spot by the water, sit back, feel the ocean breeze, and simply do nothing—after all, that's a beautiful part of traveling, too. Day 4 | A Final Coffee Break and a City Stroll Keep your final day close to home by avoiding far-flung plans, dedicating your remaining time to the places you’ve enjoyed the most. Spend your morning wandering the city center one last time to pick up some unique Finnish souvenirs, or simply find a cozy café to settle into. Helsinki boasts a distinctive coffee culture. On the last day of your trip, sitting by a window with a hot cup of coffee, watching the locals kick-start their day, often feels far more rewarding than rushing to squeeze in one last attraction. If you have a bit of time left, take another walk along the waterfront, leisurely revisiting any quaint little streets you might have missed earlier. You never have to race against the sunset during a Helsinki summer; the extended daylight offers incredible flexibility for your plans. Practical Tips for a Summer Visit to Helsinki · Relish the long days: Summer is absolutely perfect for outdoor activities, as you never have to worry about it getting dark too early. · Dress in layers: Even when the daytime sun feels wonderfully warm, the coastal breeze can be chilly. A light jacket is a must-have. · Walk as much as possible: The downtown attractions are clustered together, and exploring on foot connects you with the city’s vibe much better than taking transit. · Take a boat ride: Suomenlinna isn't just a destination; the ferry ride over is a quintessential part of the Helsinki travel experience. · Don't overbook your days: One of Helsinki's most captivating qualities is its quiet, comfortable, and unhurried pace of life. · Dine al fresco: Whenever the weather permits, grab a seat on an outdoor patio to truly embrace the local summer lifestyle. Reflecting on 4 Days and 3 Nights Looking back on my four days and three nights in Helsinki, my favorite takeaway isn't a specific landmark, but the profound sense of comfort the city imparts. It lacks the overwhelming crowds typical of other major European capitals. Here, architecture, bustling harbors, grand libraries, cozy cafés, and natural scenery blend seamlessly. Walking the streets, you never feel the stressful urge to rush through a checklist of sights. Summer is undeniably the best time for a first visit to Helsinki. The brilliant sunshine, refreshing sea breeze, endless daylight, and the lush greenery woven throughout the city make traveling feel effortlessly relaxing. If I had to narrow down the highlights for a four-day, three-night trip, I’d highly recommend including the city center, Helsinki Cathedral, the National Library of Finland, Oodi, the harbor market, and Suomenlinna—while deliberately leaving plenty of blank space in your schedule. By the end of my journey, I realized that Helsinki's true charm lies in the simple fact that "you don't have to rush." Sitting by the sea feeling the wind, wandering through a quiet library, sipping a coffee, or just meandering down a street—these are the fragments that make a trip truly memorable. This four-day, three-night summer getaway wasn't packed with non-stop activities, yet it delivered a remarkably complete Nordic city experience, leaving me eagerly anticipating my next return to Finland.

During this trip to Finland, besides planning visits to tourist spots and natural landscapes, I especially loved browsing local supermarkets because they often reflect the daily lives of locals better than tourist attractions. When I arrived in Lahti, I specifically made time to check out the K-Supermarket. Originally, I just wanted to restock on drinks and a few road trip snacks, but after walking around, I actually found it to be a place highly worth experiencing for travelers. My first impression of the K-Supermarket was its spaciousness, clear aisles, and easy-to-understand product categorization. Unlike some crowded Asian convenience stores, Finnish supermarkets have plenty of space between aisles. Even if you push a shopping cart and browse slowly, you won't feel rushed. For first-time visitors to Finland, this shopping environment is incredibly comfortable. 🛒 The Best Sections to Explore · Dairy Section Finland offers a huge variety of milk, yogurt, and cheese, making it one of my favorite aisles. Different brands and sizes are neatly arranged so you can compare prices before deciding. For travelers staying in apartments or accommodations with simple kitchens, buying some dairy products for breakfast is super convenient. · Bread and Pastry Section Bread makes up a large part of the daily Finnish diet, and you can find a wide variety of it in the supermarket. From sliced bread and rye bread to various multigrain products, everything is available, and the prices are much more budget-friendly than buying breakfast at a cafe. · Chilled Ready-to-Eat Food If you're traveling independently or staying in a hotel, you might not always have time to sit down for a full meal. Check out the chilled section for salads, sandwiches, and other ready-to-eat foods. It's incredibly practical for those looking to grab a quick bite on the go. · Finnish Snacks and Chocolate This is the easiest aisle to lose control in. There’s a vast selection of Finnish chocolates, candies, and cookies, many featuring minimalist yet distinctively Nordic packaging. Buying a few as road trip snacks or souvenirs feels much more authentic than purchasing them in tourist areas. · Beverage Section Besides mineral water and soda, you'll find a variety of juices, dairy drinks, and common local Finnish beverages. If you're walking around outdoors all day during your trip, restocking your drinks directly at the supermarket is super convenient. 💶 The Most Noticeable Thing: Price Differences Dining out in Finland is generally not cheap, so visiting the supermarket is a great way to save money. You don't have to eat breakfast at a restaurant every day; you can buy bread, yogurt, fruit, and drinks to mix and match back at your accommodation. My top recommendation is to observe the prices of a few items first and only buy what you truly need. Finnish supermarket products often come in large packages, making the unit price look reasonable, but if you're only on a short trip, there's no need to buy too much at once just because it's cheap. Additionally, keep an eye out for promotional items. Some products have discount tags, especially near-expiry foods, which are even more cost-effective than usual. If you plan to finish it that same day, it's absolutely worth buying and helps reduce food waste. 🧾 Checkout Tips Self-checkout is quite common in Finnish supermarkets. Don't be nervous if it's your first time; simply follow the on-screen instructions. If you're not comfortable with self-checkout, manual counters are also available. You usually need to bring your own shopping bags when shopping in Finland. It's best to carry reusable bags with you during your trip. Bagging your own groceries after paying is also a very natural part of the process. If you're unsure whether a product requires special handling, you can just ask the staff. English is widely spoken in Finland, so travelers basically don't need to worry about communication barriers. 📍 Practical Planning for Your Lahti Trip If Lahti is one of the stops on your Finnish journey, I highly recommend fitting K-Supermarket into your city itinerary. After exploring attractions, the lakefront, or city streets during the day, head to the supermarket to restock on food and drinks. There's no need to block out half a day specifically just for grocery shopping. This is especially true if you're preparing to take a train to your next city; you can buy some bread, chocolate, fruit, or drinks to take with you. Distances between attractions in the Nordic region can sometimes be long, and having easy-to-carry food on hand truly makes the journey much more relaxed. ✨ Final Travel Thoughts The biggest takeaway from visiting the K-Supermarket in Lahti wasn't how much I bought, but seeing the Finnish way of life through the supermarket. The entire shopping process involved no flashy packaging or the noisy atmosphere typical of tourist areas; everything was natural, simple, and efficient. During my travels, I love treating local supermarkets as mini-attractions. Here, you can see what locals usually eat, how products are displayed, and which foods are popular. It's also an affordable way to experience everyday Finnish life. If you come to Lahti, why not set aside a little time to pop into K-Supermarket? You don't necessarily have to buy a lot; just take a slow stroll, look at the Finnish food and daily necessities, and pick out a few items that interest you. For me, this kind of unplanned supermarket experience actually became a very real, lived-in memory of my trip.

On this trip to Finland, my initial impression of the sauna was just "a steam room that Finns really love." It wasn't until I actually experienced a lakeside sauna in Lahti that I realized it's more than just a way to relax the body; to Finns, it's a philosophy of life. Lahti itself is a city deeply intertwined with lakes and forests. Visiting the lakeside sauna, what appealed to me most wasn't the luxuriousness of the facilities, but the pure, simple comfort of stepping out to the lake after the sauna, feeling the cool breeze, and gazing at the calm water. First Lakeside Sauna Experience Upon arriving at the lake, the surroundings were incredibly peaceful. The forest, lake, and wooden buildings painted a classic Finnish landscape. Stepping into the sauna, the first thing that hit me was the natural scent of the wood. As the temperature gradually rose, my body slowly began to sweat. The pace of a Finnish sauna is completely different from typical tourist attractions—there's no need to stay inside the whole time. Once you get hot, you step out to rest, let your body recover, and then go back in for round two. Repeating this cycle a few times is actually much more comfortable than staying in a high-temperature environment constantly. The Most Unforgettable Part: Sauna + Lake What truly made me feel the trip to Lahti was worth it was the combined experience of the sauna and the lake. Emerging from the sauna, your whole body is radiating heat, but the lakeside air is incredibly crisp. Standing by the lake to rest, you can feel the gentle breeze brushing against your skin as your body heat slowly dissipates. If the weather permits, you can even take a dip in the lake to cool off, just like the locals do. Taking that first plunge actually requires a bit of mental prep—the lake water and the sauna are truly two different worlds. After a brief dip in the cold water and returning to the warm sauna, your body experiences a striking contrast. This cycle of "hot—cold—rest" is definitely the most memorable part of the entire experience. The Lakeside Scenery is Even More Charming Than Expected Another reason I loved the lakeside sauna in Lahti so much is how seamlessly nature blends into the whole experience. While sitting by the lake to rest, there's no need to plan any activities; just looking at the water, the forest, and the sky is enough. The lack of artificial embellishments in Finland's natural landscape actually makes it much easier to unwind. If you visit around dusk, the lighting gives the lake beautiful, shifting layers. On a clear day, you can even watch the sunset while you relax. For those used to the hustle and bustle of city life, this completely unhurried time is incredibly precious. Tips for the Experience · For your first time, don't force yourself to stay in too long; if it gets too hot, step out and take a breather. · Staying hydrated is crucial, as you'll sweat a lot during the sauna. · If you plan to cool off in the lake, it's best to check the water temperature, weather, and local safety rules for the day. · Bringing a towel, slippers, and a change of clothes will make things much easier. · The sauna is a space for relaxation. If you chat, keep your volume down to avoid disturbing others. · If you want to take photos, do so in public or outdoor areas. Once inside the sauna, prioritize respecting other users' privacy. · When experiencing a lakeside sauna in winter, pay special attention to staying warm. Safety during outdoor cool-downs and getting in/out of the water cannot be ignored. What Drew Me Most to the Lakeside Sauna in Lahti In the past, I used to pack my travel itineraries tight, rushing to multiple spots in a day, only to realize how exhausted I was upon returning to the hotel. But the lakeside sauna in Lahti made me feel, for the first time, that "doing nothing" can be an integral part of travel itself. Sitting by the lake, watching the wind create gentle ripples on the water, and listening to the sounds of nature—no shopping, no queuing, no rushing to the next attraction. After the sauna, I felt so utterly relaxed that even the accumulated fatigue from regular traveling melted away. This experience also helped me understand why the sauna holds such an important place in Finnish culture. It's not just about chasing high temperatures or sweating; it's about temporarily letting go of work and schedules to return to the simplest rhythm of life. If you're traveling to Lahti, I highly recommend setting aside some time for a lakeside sauna experience. Rather than treating it as a "tourist attraction," consider it a slice-of-life experience on your Finnish journey. What makes it truly unforgettable might not be how special the sauna itself is, but those few minutes standing by the lake afterwards—the water, the forest, the breeze, and the quiet sky let you truly feel the Finnish slow life for the first time.

On this trip to Lahti, Finland, my initial impression of the city was all about lakes, forests, and a quiet Nordic lifestyle. But it wasn't until I actually stepped into the woods to pick berries that I realized just how incredibly close the Finns are to nature. There are no large tourist facilities or deliberately arranged gorgeous landscapes—just a tranquil forest, soft moss beneath your feet, and bright red or deep blue wild berries hidden among the green leaves. For those used to city travel, this is a very different kind of experience. The forest environment around Lahti is perfect for experiencing Finland's natural way of life. Walking into the woods, the air is noticeably fresher, and it's so quiet that you can only hear the wind rustling through the leaves. At first, I kept holding my phone to take photos, but once the berry hunting actually began, my attention quickly shifted from the scenery to the tiny plants at my feet. Picking berries for the first time: It's not as easy as you might think I originally thought berry picking just meant spotting the fruit and plucking it right off. In reality, it takes a bit of patience. Berries usually hide among low shrubs and leaves. You have to crouch down, look carefully, and gently pluck the ripe ones once you spot them. Common wild berries in Finnish forests include: · Bilberry (mustikka): Smaller fruit, turns deep blue when ripe, and the juice is intensely colored. · Lingonberry (puolukka): Bright red when ripe, with a distinctly tart flavor. · Cloudberry (lakka): Golden berries, found only in specific environments and seasons, making them quite precious. · You might also spot other types of wild berries in the forest, but never forage or eat plants you can't identify. Finland's wild berry season depends on the region and the year's weather. In the southern regions, the picking season usually starts in summer. So, if you specifically want to experience berry picking, it's best to plan based on current seasonal conditions and local information, rather than just expecting to find a certain berry in a specific month. Handpicked berries really do taste different The most fun part is popping the freshly picked berries straight into your mouth. The first wild bilberry I picked tasted so much more natural than the fruit I usually buy at the supermarket—a perfect mix of sweet and tart with a rich, fruity aroma. My fingers were quickly stained a purplish-blue. Even though it's just a tiny detail, it made me feel like I was truly engaging with the forest. The more you pick, the more rewarding it feels. What started as a goal to fill just one small box quickly turned into an irresistible urge to keep finding the next berry. Unlike simply snapping photos at typical tourist spots, this experience requires you to get hands-on and observe slowly, making it particularly unforgettable. Practical tips for berry picking in the forests of Lahti If it's your first time picking berries in the forest, I'd suggest keeping a few things in mind: · Wear suitable shoes for the forest: The forest floor can have mud, tree roots, and uneven terrain, so sneakers or hiking boots are ideal. · Wear long pants and outdoor-friendly clothing: You might encounter bugs or dense vegetation once you're in the woods. · Bring mosquito repellent: This is especially important for summer forest activities. · Don't just eat any berry you see: Always confirm the species first. Never pick or eat unidentifiable wild plants. · Follow local environmental rules: Finland has its famous Everyman's Rights, allowing people to enjoy certain activities and foraging in nature, but you must also respect private property, the natural environment, and local regulations. · Do not damage plants or the forest floor: Foraging should always be done without harming the environment. · Don't obsess over picking as much as possible: What's truly worth cherishing is the experience of the forest itself, not hoarding massive amounts of berries. What I loved most was the feeling of "slowing down" What surprised me most about this berry picking trip in the Lahti forest wasn't how much I eventually harvested, but how the whole process naturally made me slow down. Normally, traveling involves cramming in sights, transit, and restaurants, constantly worrying about missing the next itinerary item, with rarely any time to truly stop and observe your surroundings. In the forest, however, it's a completely different story. There's no need to rush. You just stroll slowly through the woods, crouch down to pick berries when you spot them, and find a spot to rest when you're tired, listening to the sounds of the forest. This kind of simple activity actually makes the trip much more memorable. For me, the most unforgettable part of Lahti isn't a popular tourist attraction, but the sheer freshness of stepping into a Finnish forest, picking a wild berry with my own hands, and tasting it right then and there. In that moment, you suddenly realize that when Finns talk about "forest life," it's not just a tourism slogan—it's a lifestyle genuinely woven into their everyday routine. If you love nature, photography, outdoor activities, or just want a Finnish travel experience completely different from standard sightseeing tours, I highly recommend adding berry picking in the Lahti forest to your itinerary. Venturing into the lush, green summer woods to hunt for berries hidden beneath the leaves is simple, fun, and offers a fresh perspective on the relationship between Finland and nature. It's a Nordic forest adventure that requires little planning but will stay with you for a long time.

During my trip to Lahti, Finland, I hadn't planned on visiting any high-end restaurants. Instead, while looking for a straightforward place to grab a bite during my travels, Barot’s caught my eye. Once inside, I discovered it’s a local Finnish fast-casual spot serving up burgers, fried chicken, salads, and snacks. The vibe was far more inviting than your average fast-food joint, yet it retained that relaxed and easygoing dining feel. For my first order, I went with a burger and fries. Served on a soft bun, the beef patty was perfectly seared and packed with flavor. Topped with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles, the overall taste was incredibly well-balanced. What really stands out here is the option to choose from Barot’s signature sauces, giving the classic beef-and-cheese combo a unique, personalized twist. The flavors of the beef and the sauce really shine through, making it a simple but genuinely satisfying meal for any burger lover. What impressed me the most about this visit: · Burgers steal the show: If it's your first visit, I highly recommend starting with their burgers, especially if you want to get a true taste of what the place is all about. · Customizable sauces: Different sauces can completely change the flavor profile of the same burger, allowing you to mix and match to suit your own taste. · Plenty of menu options: Besides traditional burgers, they offer smash burgers, fried chicken, salads, finger foods, grilled items, and milkshakes. There's something for everyone in your group to enjoy. · Perfect for travelers: You won't have to wait long, and the portion sizes are just right for a mid-sightseeing meal. · Laid-back atmosphere: Unlike formal dining where you might feel the need to dress up, it’s perfectly fine and comfortable to walk in wearing your casual travel clothes. I genuinely love this kind of dining when I travel. Dining out in Finland can be pretty expensive, so it’s nice not having to book a formal restaurant for every meal. A fast-casual place like Barot’s gives you a complete, filling meal without taking up too much of your day—perfect for slotting into a busy Lahti itinerary. For first-timers, I’d suggest starting with a classic burger or a smash burger, then deciding if you want to add fries or other sides depending on your appetite. If you have a sweet tooth, be sure to check out their seasonal milkshakes and desserts; these limited-time treats offer a fun little surprise with every visit. One quick practical tip: restaurant hours in Finland can differ quite a bit from Taiwan, so it’s a good idea to check their opening status for the day before you go. Barot’s Lahti is located at Myyntimiehenkatu 2, making it a super convenient spot if you're exploring the area and just want a straightforward, tasty meal. My biggest takeaway from eating at Barot’s wasn’t that it was some spectacular gourmet feast, but rather how closely it resembled the everyday life of the locals. After a long day of walking, finding a cozy spot to sit down, enjoying a piping hot burger and fries, and then heading back out to explore the city—that, to me, is the true joy of traveling. If you find yourself in Lahti and want a break from traditional Finnish cuisine while still trying a popular local brand, Barot’s is definitely a choice worth adding to your itinerary. For me, it was a relaxing little interlude in my trip—nothing overly fancy, just a comfortable, satisfying meal that added a great memory to my time exploring Lahti.

For your first visit to Helsinki, I believe the best way to get to know the city isn't by rushing from one attraction to the next in a car, but by planning a walking route to stroll and take it all in at your own pace. The landmarks in downtown Helsinki are actually quite close to each other. Along the way, you can soak up classical architecture, Nordic design, harbor views, historic churches, and the daily lives of the locals all at once. The entire walk won't leave you exhausted, yet it reveals countless little details you'd easily miss from a vehicle. This proposed walking route kicks off at Helsinki Central Station, taking you past the National Library of Finland, Senate Square, and Helsinki Cathedral. From there, head toward Market Square, the Old Market Hall, and the waterfront, eventually winding up at Esplanadi Park if you're still up for it. The whole itinerary easily fills half a day, offering plenty of chances to pause for a coffee or a quick bite—perfect for fans of slow travel. Stop 1 | Helsinki Central Station Central Station is the perfect starting point. The building itself is an architectural icon, famed for its massive granite facade, classical flair, and the distinctive statues guarding the main entrance. Once you set off, there's no need to rush to the next stop. Take a moment to observe Helsinki's rhythm right around the station. The mix of commuters, passing trams, cozy cafes, and striking streetscapes shows that while this is the capital of Finland, it lacks the suffocating congestion of typical metropolises. Stop 2 | The National Library of Finland Wandering down the downtown streets, you'll reach the National Library of Finland—a highly recommended stop on this walking tour. The library’s exterior is undeniably elegant, but stepping inside truly reveals the magic of its classical design. The soaring reading rooms, stunning domes, intricate frescoes, and perfectly lined bookshelves naturally make you want to slow down. If you happen to visit during public hours, it’s absolutely worth popping in. Unlike bustling tourist hotspots, this space offers a sudden, peaceful shift in the pace of your trip. Stop 3 | Senate Square and Helsinki Cathedral Leaving the library, you'll quickly arrive at Senate Square, one of Helsinki's most iconic historic districts. The architecture surrounding the square is incredibly cohesive, but the undeniable centerpiece is the towering Helsinki Cathedral. Its pristine white walls and striking green domes stand out beautifully against a blue sky—a classic, must-capture view for any first-time visitor. Standing right in the center of the square gives you a true sense of the building's massive scale, much more so than photos ever could. Don't just snap a picture and leave; grab a seat nearby, take a breather, and do some people-watching as tourists and locals go about their day. Stop 4 | Market Square and the Harbor As you head toward the waterfront, the cityscape begins to shift. Transitioning from the historic district to Market Square, you'll catch a stronger vibe of local daily life. The harbor area is buzzing with market stalls, food vendors, and ferries coming and going. On a sunny day, the whole area feels incredibly relaxing. If you're here in the morning, take a stroll through the market to check out local foods, fresh berries, fish, and various Finnish specialties. This stretch is arguably the best spot to grab a snack and eat on the go. Stop 5 | Old Market Hall and Esplanadi Park Continuing along the harbor, make time to step inside the Old Market Hall. Compared to the outdoor market, this indoor food hall is perfect for those who want to take their time browsing Finnish ingredients and artisanal foods. Afterward, head over to Esplanadi Park. Once you step into the park, the street noise fades away, and the tree-lined paths and benches offer a perfect spot to rest. If you're visiting in the summer, the vibe here is exceptionally pleasant. You'll see locals lounging on the grass, chatting, and soaking up the sun, completely free from the pressure of rushing to the next tourist trap. Handy Tips for Walking in Helsinki · Start in the morning: This lets you hit the morning markets before strolling down to the waterfront. · Block out at least half a day: Don't pack your schedule too tight. Helsinki is best enjoyed when you can stop and go as you please. · Wear comfortable shoes: The distances might seem short, but the walking adds up. · Pack sun protection for summer: Nordic summers have endless daylight. Walking outdoors is wonderful, but don't forget your sunscreen. · Watch your step in winter: Cold weather means snow and ice, so shoes with good grip are a must. · Keep the tram as a backup plan: If your feet get tired, hop on the city's public transit to cut your trip short. · Look beyond the main landmarks: Helsinki’s true charm often hides in quiet street corners, neighborhood cafes, residential architecture, and harbor views. My biggest takeaway from this route is that Helsinki is a city meant to be explored on foot. From Central Station to classical buildings, the library, the cathedral, public squares, traditional markets, and the harbor, the scenery constantly shifts while maintaining that signature Nordic blend of minimalism and ease. If time permits, I highly recommend ditching the frantic one-day sightseeing sprint. Set aside a full morning or afternoon, lace up your most comfortable shoes, and take a leisurely walk through the city center. Stop to admire a building that catches your eye, or grab a seat when you stumble upon an inviting cafe. Looking back after your trip, you'll likely find that those unplanned street corners and quiet strolls are what you remember most about Helsinki.

The first time I saw Marimekko in Helsinki, my immediate thought was, "Wow, the Finnish lifestyle can actually be this colorful!" Most people are probably familiar with this Finnish design brand and its classic floral prints. But it’s not until you step inside the store that you realize Marimekko is about so much more than just clothes or bags—it’s an entire aesthetic that seamlessly weaves design into everyday life. From apparel, bags, and shoes to tableware, mugs, fabrics, and home decor, every single item radiates a strong Nordic vibe. During my trip to Helsinki, I specifically made time to check out Marimekko. I originally just wanted to pick up a classic Finnish souvenir, but I ended up browsing for ages. In the end, the hardest part was actually deciding what to buy! First Impressions: Unmistakably Vibrant Colors Walking into the store, it wasn't just one specific item that caught my eye, but the overall visual merchandising. The bold combinations of red, blue, yellow, and green paired with their signature floral prints created such a fun contrast with the minimalist architecture you typically see on the streets of Helsinki. Even though Marimekko’s designs are brightly colored, they never feel chaotic. Instead, they perfectly capture the essence of Finnish design—simple and practical, yet full of personality. Of course, the iconic Unikko (poppy) print is practically everywhere. Seeing the fabrics and products up close for the first time made me realize how playing with different sizes and colorways of the flowers can give off completely different vibes. Top Categories Worth Checking Out If it’s your first time visiting, I highly recommend looking beyond the clothing racks and taking your time to explore the different collections. · Canvas Bags & Totes: Practical and easy to carry, these are hands-down the best travel souvenirs in my book. · Apparel: The cuts are relatively minimal, but the prints and color palettes are super distinctive—perfect for anyone who loves the Nordic style. · Mugs & Tableware: They take up way less space than larger home goods and are great pieces to use everyday once you're back home. · Fabrics & Home Decor: If you're a design lover, you could easily spend hours in this section. The way the different patterns mix and match is absolutely stunning. · Small Accessories: If you're on a budget, you can always go for socks, makeup bags, or other small knick-knacks. They still have that unmistakable Marimekko flair. The Unique Experience of Shopping in Helsinki I think the biggest difference between visiting Marimekko in its home country versus seeing it abroad is that it doesn't just feel like a "tourist souvenir shop." Walking around Helsinki, you’ll constantly spot locals carrying Marimekko bags, wearing their clothes, and using items with those familiar prints in their daily lives. It really made me realize that Marimekko isn’t just catering to tourists—it’s genuinely woven into the fabric of everyday Finnish life. Because of that, shopping there felt incredibly organic. I wasn't just buying a "Finnish souvenir"; I was taking home a little piece of authentic Finnish lifestyle and design. A Few Practical Tips Before You Buy Based on my shopping experience, here are a few things to keep in mind: · If you're eyeing the classic prints, compare different colorways first. You don't necessarily have to go for the brightest ones. · Canvas bags and small accessories easily fit into your luggage, making them ideal purchases while traveling. · Definitely try the clothes on if you can! The fits can vary widely, and they look completely different once you put them on. · The home goods are gorgeous, but be mindful of your luggage space and weight limits. · If you spot a limited edition or special colorway that you love, grab it then and there. Don't count on finding the exact same piece later. · Take a moment to compare prices and check for any current promotions, especially if you’ve specifically budgeted for shopping on your trip. Final Thoughts on the Experience Before this trip, my impression of Marimekko was mostly just that bold, eye-catching Unikko flower. But actually being in Helsinki showed me that the brand represents far more than a single classic print. It embodies a very Finnish attitude towards life: keeping things simple and practical without ever sacrificing color and individuality. My favorite moment was stepping back out onto the streets of Helsinki after my shopping trip. The city itself is full of clean, minimalist Nordic lines, and holding that vibrant Marimekko shopping bag created a contrast that felt surprisingly harmonious. If it's your first time in Helsinki, I highly recommend adding a stop at Marimekko to your itinerary—and not just for the shopping. Even if you don't end up buying much, it's worth going in just to see how Finnish design extends from fashion straight into daily life. For me, the most valuable takeaway from this visit wasn't the stuff I bought, but rather the tangible experience of seeing how Finns integrate design into their world. It’s a kind of cultural charm that you simply can't grasp through photos; you have to walk into the store and take it all in for yourself.

When traveling to Helsinki, many people focus their itineraries on famous spots like Helsinki Cathedral, Senate Square, and the National Library of Finland. But if you're a fan of historical architecture and urban culture, I highly recommend adding the House of the Estates (Säätytalo) to your list. Located on Snellmaninkatu in the Kruununhaka district, it sits right opposite the Bank of Finland and is just a short walk from Senate Square. While the exterior looks majestic and elegant, the real surprise lies in the history behind the building, which is closely tied to Finland's political evolution. When I first laid eyes on Säätytalo, what struck me most was its imposing presence, typical of 19th-century European public buildings. Designed by Finnish architect Gustaf Nyström, the building features a Neo-Renaissance style. It was built between 1888 and 1890 and officially opened in 1891. Back then, it wasn't just a simple administrative building; it provided meeting spaces for the three estates of the Diet during the Grand Duchy of Finland era. As such, it carries vital memories of the development of Finland's political system. The Architectural Details Are What Really Shine If you just stand outside for a photo, it's easy to underestimate Säätytalo's charm. It's only when you actually step inside that you realize how incredibly ornate its interior is. What impressed me most was the central staircase hall. The combination of high ceilings, colonnades, arched structures, and painted decorations gives the whole space a majestic yet elegant vibe. The glass roof and stained glass skylights, in particular, allow natural light to flood in, adding a touch of brightness to an otherwise heavy-looking building. The interior extensively utilizes common 19th-century decorative techniques like faux stone and faux wood finishes. It looks stunningly opulent from a distance, and a closer look reveals a wealth of detailed paintings and craftsmanship. Between 1900 and 1904, Finnish national elements were added to the interior design. Colors like yellow and red give the space a distinct touch of Finland's own cultural identity. Witnessing Finland's Political Shifts Through Architecture The most fascinating thing about Säätytalo is that it's not merely a preserved ancient building, but a place that has witnessed the transformation of Finland's political system. In early Finland, the four social estates—nobility, clergy, burghers, and peasants—participated in state affairs separately. Säätytalo was primarily used by the three non-noble estates, while the nobility had their own House of Nobility (Ritarihuone). Following the Finnish parliamentary reform in 1906, the old system of the Diet of the Estates came to an end, and Säätytalo was repurposed for the new parliament. Later, the building served as parliamentary meeting rooms and a library, and after 1931, it became a hub for scientific societies. By 1978, the government took it over to use as a venue for meetings, receptions, and banquets. The shifts in its function over different eras make Säätytalo read like a three-dimensional book of modern Finnish history. Key Spots I Paid Special Attention to During My Visit · The central staircase hall: The most awe-inspiring space in the entire building. The colonnades and painted decorations are absolutely worth a closer look. · The ceiling and stained glass skylights: Natural light paired with classical decor makes this one of the most beautiful details inside. · The LEX sculpture group on the main staircase: Designed by Walter Runeberg and installed in 1893, it holds significant artistic and historical value. · Meeting rooms for different estates: It's fascinating to imagine what it was like when different social classes debated national affairs here back in the day. · The building's exterior: I recommend taking a few steps back across the street to admire the full proportions and facade characteristics of this Neo-Renaissance architecture. A Quick Travel Tip Since Säätytalo currently serves mainly as a meeting and reception venue for the Finnish government, it's quite different from a standard museum. You can't just treat it like a regular tourist attraction where you can wander in freely every day. It's best to double-check opening information and visiting guidelines before planning your visit. If your itinerary happens to take you nearby, I suggest pairing it with the National Library of Finland, Helsinki Cathedral, Senate Square, and the National Archives of Finland all on the same day. The attractions in this area are concentrated and easily connected on foot, and each building boasts a unique historical background. Additionally, Säätytalo underwent a major renovation between 2023 and 2025, which included exterior facade restoration, the preservation of interior paintings, and equipment upgrades. Because of this, the architectural details you see today are even more complete and vibrant. My Authentic Travel Experience One thing I really love about Säätytalo is that it's not the kind of hotspot where you just "take a glance, snap a pic, and leave." Once you genuinely understand its history and look back at those pillars, murals, staircases, and meeting rooms, you realize every single space is interwoven with the nation's development. Standing in this building with over 130 years of history, you can picture the parliamentarians, scholars, and government officials of the past debating crucial national issues here. From the 19th-century Diet of the Estates to the 20th-century parliamentary reform, and all the way to its current role as a government meeting and reception space, Säätytalo has always been deeply intertwined with Finnish public life. If you're a fan of architecture, history, and political culture, the House of the Estates (Säätytalo) is a Helsinki attraction genuinely worth getting to know. It lacks the crowds of the most popular spots, yet it allows you to truly read Finnish history through a single building, adding a layer of quiet, profound cultural memory to your Helsinki trip.
