As of 2026, the entrance fee for international visitors is approximately 40 Euros per person, which includes access to the ancient city and the Ephesus Experience Museum. Parking costs around 150 Turkish Lira per vehicle, although prices can occasionally change depending on the season. The first major landmark you’ll come across is the impressive Great Theatre of Ephesus. #bucketlistdestinations We visited Ephesus independently from İzmir, and it turned out to be a very manageable day trip without an organised tour. Getting there was straightforward; getting back required a little more improvisation, and our first unexpected adventure happened before we’d even made it through the entrance. 🚆 HOW TO GET THERE FROM İZMİR We took a regional TCDD train from İzmir Basmane Station to Selçuk, the closest town to Ephesus. The journey takes roughly 1.5 hours, which makes Selçuk an easy base for reaching the archaeological site. Once in Selçuk, don’t look for a numbered Ephesus bus. Instead, find the local dolmuş marked: SELÇUK – EFES – PAMUCAK It takes you to the Lower Gate of Ephesus in around 10 minutes. Current fares are roughly 100 TL, although transport prices in Türkiye change frequently. 📌 One useful detail: older travel guides can be confusing because Selçuk’s bus arrangements have changed. The local minibuses for Ephesus can be picked up in the town-centre minibus area, around the large roundabout near Yamanlar Eczane. 🚕 PLAN HOW YOU’LL GET BACK This was the less obvious part of travelling independently. When we finished visiting Ephesus, getting back to Selçuk by public transport wasn’t straightforward, so we used one of the local taxis waiting near the archaeological site. From Selçuk, we caught a bus back to İzmir. For the short taxi ride between Ephesus and Selçuk, I would currently budget approximately €8–15 and confirm the fare with the driver before getting in, as the price can vary depending on where you finish your visit. After several hours walking around Ephesus under the Turkish sun is not the ideal moment to suddenly wonder how you’re getting home. We tested that approach for you. 😄 💵 BRING SOME TURKISH LIRA Our second lesson arrived at the ticket office. We planned to pay by card, but the terminal wasn’t working. We had money, we had cards and Ephesus was right in front of us — we just couldn’t buy the tickets. Eventually, we went to the little shops near the entrance and exchanged money there so we could pay in Turkish lira. Card payment is normally possible, so I’m not saying Ephesus is cash-only. But after our experience, I wouldn’t rely entirely on a card. Having some lira with you can save a lot of unnecessary hassle and is useful for local transport and small expenses too. 👟 THE ANCIENT MARBLE IS BEAUTIFUL — AND SLIPPERY Ephesus is an entire archaeological city rather than one monument surrounded by a few ruins, so expect plenty of walking. Some of the ancient marble is polished, uneven and surprisingly slippery. Comfortable shoes with decent grip make a real difference, particularly after rain. This is probably not the best place to discover how committed you really are to fashionable footwear. 😄 ☀️ AVOID THE HOTTEST PART OF THE DAY Large sections of Ephesus have very little shade. In warmer months, water, sunscreen and a hat are essential, and an earlier start makes the visit much more comfortable. I would allow at least 2–3 hours for the main archaeological site rather than treating Ephesus as a quick photo stop. 🏛️ DON’T MAKE THE LIBRARY OF CELSUS YOUR ONLY GOAL Of course, the Library of Celsus is spectacular. And yes, we took the obligatory photo there too. But Ephesus became much more interesting when we stopped thinking about reaching the famous façade and started paying attention to everything along the way: marble streets, columns, reliefs, statues and remains of buildings that make it possible to imagine this as a functioning ancient city. If you have enough time, consider visiting the Terrace Houses as well. They require a separate ticket, but the preserved mosaics, frescoes and rooms show something the monumental ruins can’t: how some of Ephesus’s wealthy residents actually lived. 📌 QUICK EPHESUS CHECKLIST 🚆 From İzmir: Basmane Station → TCDD train → Selçuk 🚌 To Ephesus: “Selçuk – Efes – Pamucak” dolmuş → Lower Gate 🚕 Return: taxi to Selçuk → bus/train to İzmir 💰 Taxi: budget roughly €8–15 and agree on the fare first 💵 Cash: carry some Turkish lira in case the card terminal isn’t working 👟 Shoes: comfortable, with good grip ☀️ Bring: water + sunscreen + hat ⏰ Time: allow at least 2–3 hours 🏛️ Extra: consider adding the Terrace Houses If we did this trip again, we’d still choose to visit independently.
