This year I had a chance to solo travel to China for the third time (and third consecutive year!), after having seen the biggest and most popular cities during my previous trips, I chose to dedicate this one to nature, hiking and exploring a less known region (to Europeans at least, it's a famous and beloved destination for internal travel!)... ... and that's how I ended up spending the perfect two weeks in Yunnan!! Yunnan truly stole my heart, its beauty is never overrated and everyday surprised and amazed me, here is my itinerary! Days 1–2 (+ optional day 3 to explore the city more in depth, enjoy the flower market and amazing cafe culture): Kunming · Day 1: Arrive in Kunming. Explore Green Lake Park (Cuihu) and stroll around Guandu Old Town or Yuantong Temple. · Day 2: Take a day trip to the Stone Forest (Shilin) (UNESCO site) of dramatic limestone pillars, then board an afternoon/evening high-speed train to Dali (about 2 hours). Days 3–5 (or day 4-5 if you spent an extra day in Kunming, in this case I recommend to skip the itinerary written down for day 5, and follow days 3-4): Dali & Erhai Lake · Day 3: Explore Dali Ancient Town and visit the iconic Three Pagodas (Chongsheng Temple). · Day 4: Rent an e-bike or car to circle parts of Erhai Lake and stop by the traditional Bai minority agricultural town of Xizhou. · Day 5: Hike or take the cable car up Cangshan Mountain for panoramic views over the valley and Erhai Lake. Day 6: Shaxi Ancient Town · Day 6: Travel from Dali to Shaxi Ancient Town—a remarkably well-preserved historic hub on the ancient Tea Horse Road. Walk the cobbled market square and visit Xingjiao Temple. Days 7–9: Lijiang & Surroundings · Day 7: Head from Shaxi to Lijiang Old Town. Wander the maze of canals and waterwheels in the evening. · Day 8: Visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, ride the high-altitude cable car to the glacier and see the turquoise waters of Blue Moon Valley, end your day with the incredible Impression Lijiang show! · Day 9: Explore the quieter Naxi minority villages nearby, such as Baisha Old Town (to see ancient murals) and Shuhe (both can be easily done in one day!) Days 10–11: Tiger Leaping Gorge · Day 10: Travel from Lijiang to the start of Tiger Leaping Gorge. Embark on the famous high-trail multi-day trek or take the lower scenic path down to the roaring Jinsha River. Days 12–13: Shangri-La (Tibetan Cultural Core) · Day 12: Arrive in the high-altitude Tibetan plateau. Shilin is so famous that many people go in just to take a photo under the two red characters for "Shilin," then take the electric cart for a loop and leave. What a pity. These stones aren't just for looking at; they are for exploring—squeeze into the stone crevices, look up to see only a sliver of sky, and feel the wind blowing through the gaps, cool and refreshing. Only then will you understand why the Sani people call this place a "forest grown from stone." First, the essentials Shilin is located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Kunming, about 80 km from the city center. Admission is CNY 130 (includes Major Stone Forest, Minor Stone Forest, Bushao Mountain, etc.), and the sightseeing cart is CNY 25. Opening hours are 8:00 AM–6:00 PM. It takes about 20 minutes to get from Kunming to "Shilin West" station by high-speed train, then transfer to a bus or taxi; driving via the Kunming-Shilin Expressway takes about 1.5 hours. The best seasons to visit are March–May and September–November, when it's neither too cold nor too sunny. Recommended route—explore the Major Stone Forest first, then head to the Minor Stone Forest to find Ashima Once you enter the park, head straight to the Major Stone Forest. Don't take the electric cart; walk. The stone peaks are as dense as a maze, with paths winding through the crevices. In some places, you have to turn sideways to pass, and in others, you have to duck. Climb to Wangfeng Pavilion, and the entire stone forest spreads out beneath your feet, with gray-black stone peaks looking like a frozen wave. After leaving the Major Stone Forest, walk for 10 minutes to the Minor Stone Forest. The stones here are more delicate. The most famous is the Ashima Stone—a stone peak standing sideways, carrying a basket on its back, as if waiting for someone. Tour guides will tell the story of Ashima, and as they speak, they start to sing, the melody winding through the valley before fading away. Three must-do experiences Find a spot in the stone crevices away from other tourists and stand there for a while—the main paths are crowded, but just turn into any side crevice and the world goes quiet, with only the sound of the wind whistling through the stones. Wait at Wangfeng Pavilion for the wind to blow the clouds away—the weather in Shilin changes quickly, and once the clouds clear, the entire expanse of stone peaks lights up. Listen to a Sani tour guide sing a segment of "Ashima"—it's not a performance, but a song they've known since childhood, and the melody is even more beautiful than the lyrics. Historical and cultural background Shilin is the home of the Sani people, a branch of the Yi ethnic group. The narrative poem "Ashima" was born here, telling the story of the Sani girl Ashima and the young man Ahei. The Sani people have a name and a legend for every stone peak in the forest. Shilin was listed as a World Natural Heritage site in 2007, but the Sani people have lived among these stones for thousands of years. They call Shilin "Sikai," which means "the place where stones grow." Real travel impressions When I found the Ashima Stone in the Minor Stone Forest, a Sani grandmother nearby was selling embroidered pouches. She pointed to the stone peak and said, "That is Ashima; she has been waiting for Brother Ahei." I asked her, "Did she find him?" She smiled and said, "Whether she found him or not isn't important; what matters is that she is still waiting." Shilin doesn't lecture you on geology; it presents 200 million-year-old stones and lets the songs and stories of the Sani people live in the crevices. When you explore inside, listen to a song, and touch the cool stone, you'll understand why this forest is called "Shilin" (Stone Forest). When you leave, the stones are still standing there, the wind is still swirling in the crevices, and you take away an earful of songs and a pair of dusty feet.

There are also direct buses from the East Bus Station, taking about 1.5 hours. If driving, take the Kunming-Shilin Expressway, which takes 1 hour. The attraction has ample parking. The attraction is open from 7:30 AM–6:00 PM, with last entry at 5:00 PM. Admission is CNY 130, which allows re-entry within 3 days. Sightseeing electric carts are available for CNY 25; since the attraction is large, we recommend purchasing one if you prefer not to walk too much. Kunming is beautiful, but I really don't recommend visiting in September–October❗❗ Take my advice and don't force it!! Don't be fooled by the 9-grid photo collages of "the Spring City's eternal 20°C, Dianchi Lake sunsets, Haigeng Dam black-headed gulls, Stone Forest light and shadows, Cuihu Park's yellow buildings, Nanqiang Street grilled tofu, and Fuxian Lake's jelly-like water." Kunming is a scattered highland map pieced together from "downtown old streets + Dianchi Lake and Western Hills + Stone Forest suburbs + Dongchuan Red Land + Fuxian Lake + Yangzonghai." In September–October, the "Spring City" filter is just a mix of "end-of-rainy-season showers lottery, fog at Western Hills and Dianchi Lake, no black-headed gulls yet, National Day crowds everywhere, and UV rays that bite even on cloudy days." 🚫 Why I advise against visiting in September–October 1️⃣ September isn't the "peak of the Spring City," it's the most unpredictable end of the rainy season Kunming is 22–26°C during the day and 15–17°C in the mornings and evenings in September. It looks comfortable, but showers/thunderstorms pop up randomly in the afternoon: September 18 showers, 21 showers, 22 cloudy to showers, 26 light rain, 27 overcast to light rain, 28 light rain... You plan to visit the Stone Forest in the morning, Dianchi Lake at noon, Western Hills Dragon Gate in the afternoon, and Cuihu Park in the evening, but an afternoon rain hits: the Stone Forest rocks get hot and wet, the Western Hills Dragon Gate gets foggy and you can't see anything, Dianchi Lake turns gray-green, and the wind at Cuihu Park makes you shiver. It's not that it doesn't rain in the Spring City; it's that "it looks nice, but turns on you after 11:00 AM." 2️⃣ The biggest fear for Western Hills + Dianchi Lake in September is "fog locking the highland lake" Many people rush to Kunming for the "overlook of Dianchi Lake from Western Hills Dragon Gate + water and sky merging at Haigeng Dam." In September–October, humidity after the rain is high, and the Western Hills are often foggy. Looking out from the Dragon Gate window, you don't see "500 miles of Dianchi Lake," but "500 meters of white soup." Haigeng Dam also lacks its main attraction in September—the advance guard of black-headed gulls doesn't arrive until early October, and the main flock doesn't arrive until November. Visiting in September–early October means windy dams, gray water, no gulls, and no great photos. 3️⃣ The 8 days of the National Day holiday = Stone Forest, Dianchi Lake, Western Hills, Guandu, Nanqiang Street, and Fuxian Lake are all packed Usually, September is okay, but once National Day hits: · Stone Forest tickets (CNY 130 + battery car + direct bus) keep adding up, and tour groups occupy Ashima and Wangfeng Pavilion · Haigeng/Dianchi Lake cruise ships and the Western Hills cable car have long lines · Nanqiang Street, Jinma Biji Archway, and Kunming Old Street are shoulder-to-shoulder; you have to wait for grilled tofu and line up for flower cakes · Fuxian Lake (Lucheng/Gushan/Starry Sky Town) hotel prices spike; you pay double for lake-view rooms during the holiday, suffer through the Golden Week, and might not even snag a regular bus to the Stone Forest 4️⃣ The suburbs are too scattered; without a car, you're feeding your vacation to the Kunming-Shilin Expressway and winding mountain roads Stone Forest (1.5 hours), Jiuxiang (1.5–2 hours), Dongchuan Red Land (2.5–3 hours), Fuxian Lake (1+ hour), Yangzonghai (1 hour)... If you're a first-timer planning a big loop of "Kunming + Stone Forest + Jiuxiang + Dongchuan + Fuxian Lake + Mile," it equals sleeping in the car, taking photos when you get off, and rebooking hotels at night. Dongchuan Red Land is nice when the soil is turned in September, but it's at 2,500m altitude, windy, has no shade, and chartering a car is expensive. Fuxian Lake's water is okay in September, but after National Day, it's too cold at night to want to leave your tent. 5️⃣ Black-headed gulls are the soul of Kunming in autumn and winter; you'll miss them if you come in September–October The most photogenic scenes in Kunming: thousands of black-headed gulls at Haigeng Dam, flocks of gulls skimming the water in front of the yellow buildings at Cuihu Park, and the yellow Chinese hackberry trees + gulls flying at Huanxi Bridge. The advance guard of black-headed gulls only arrives at Haigeng East Pier in early October, and the main flock doesn't arrive until November. If you come to Cuihu Park in September: the lake is there, but the gulls aren't, and photos look like a "regular city park." If you come October 1–7: there are barely any gulls, but 10,000 people. 6️⃣ Highland UV rays + day-night temperature difference, your body will be the first to sound the alarm Kunming's UV rays are harsh even on cloudy days; if you don't apply SPF 50+, your face will be red and peeling in two days. Short sleeves during the day, but you'll need a light jacket as soon as the wind blows at Dianchi Lake/Fuxian Lake after 5:00 PM. The Western Hills Dragon Gate steps are steep, the Stone Forest has no shade, and Dongchuan Red Land has poor wind protection. Wearing a Hanfu skirt + white shoes = rocks scratching the fabric, mud splatters, and wind chilling your legs. 7️⃣ End of wild mushroom season + tourist trap dining September is the tail end of the wild mushroom season; some mushrooms are still edible, but "wild mushroom hot pot at CNY 198–298/pot" is a tourist-trap price, and it's easy to get sick if they aren't cooked thoroughly. Nanqiang Street, Guandu Ancient Town, and the Stone Forest entrance: "deluxe cross-bridge rice noodle sets, flower cake gift boxes, and intangible cultural heritage grilled milk fans" are more valuable for photos than taste.
