Standing at the ferry terminal, I watched a white ship glide toward the dock—its hull adorned with a pink Slowpoke, its round eyes smiling at every traveler boarding. This is Kagawa Prefecture's official mascot, the "Yadon" ferry; catching a ride on it is said to require a bit of luck. Tickets can be purchased at the counter for about 700 yen one way for adults, with a sailing time of approximately 60 minutes. Once offshore, I headed to the deck. The location is a huge draw, allowing you to enjoy your meal while admiring the terraced fields that change their look with the seasons 🌾✨ The Terraced Rice Field Onigiri Set Meal includes: ・2 rice balls (onigiri) and pickles ・Deep-fried local fish ・Vegetable kakiage (fritter) ・2 side dishes (small bowls) ・Soup ・Seasonal fruit It was a hearty, filling set meal packed with local ingredients 🙌 The onigiri are made with rare rice grown right in those terraced fields, cooked over an open flame with ice-cold natural water, and gently shaped with handmade natural sea salt from Shodoshima 🍙 Despite being shaped so softly, the rice is incredibly chewy. You can really taste the sweetness in every single grain. I was so moved, thinking, "I didn't know rice could be this delicious!" 🥹✨ Because they are simple salted rice balls, the true flavor of the rice really shines through 💕 They are quite large, too! The local fish of the day was rabbitfish (Aigo). I was surprised by how much bigger it was than I expected 😳 It was practically hanging off the plate! "Ginshiro Somen" was what I was looking forward to the most on my trip to Shodoshima. This popular restaurant offers Shodoshima's famous hand-stretched somen noodles and is loved by both tourists and locals alike. The somen noodles are thin and smooth but have a perfectly firm texture, making them super refreshing and easy to slurp down even on a hot day. What I highly recommend are the table condiments: "Garlic & Shiitake Olive Oil" to switch up the flavor! Adding just a little bit halfway through completely changes the taste, keeping you hooked until the very last bite. The shiitake olive oil, in particular, was packed with umami and absolutely phenomenal✨ I loved it so much that I bought some for myself and as souvenirs for my friends♪ They also sell somen noodles and olive oil inside the store, which make great mementos of your trip. ⚠️ Since it's a popular spot, it tends to get crowded during lunch. When I visited, many items on the menu were already sold out by around 1:00 PM. If you want to make sure you get exactly what you want, I recommend braving the crowds and arriving right when they open or before 12:00 PM! Following the trail leads to the Washimine Observatory, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Takamatsu city and the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. Since I took the earliest ferry, I was able to witness the sun and moon shining together, with Takamatsu still shrouded in a thin morning mist. ❹ Upon disembarking on Ogijima, you will be surrounded by cats. It’s a good idea to buy some cat treats in Takamatsu beforehand. The cats are very friendly and approachable; on the steps to Toyotamahime Shrine, a little black cat came right up to rub against my leg. ❺ From Toyotamahime Shrine, you can capture the classic photo featuring the "double torii gates, stone steps, and the port" all in one frame. ❻ Near the shrine, the Sunset and Cat House displays photos of all the cats on the island. The owner is often away, so if you want to buy souvenirs, be prepared to pay with coins on a self-service basis. ❼ Ogijima has only about 100 residents. The houses are built along the mid-slope on the port side. Walking along the small paths is very pleasant. When you reach Aruku Hakobune, you can turn back; it’s not very tiring.
