Sicily has layers — Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, each one leaving something behind before the next arrived to build on top of it. The result is an island that doesn’t belong to any single culture, any single era, any single version of itself. I didn’t expect to feel that walking its streets. But Sicily makes its history physical in a way few places do. 🏛️ The Greeks Left Their Temples The Valley of the Temples outside Agrigento — seven Greek temples standing on a ridge above the sea, older than the Parthenon, better preserved than most things in Athens. I walked between the columns at dusk, the stone turned amber by the falling light, and felt the particular silence that only very old things produce. 🕌 The Arabs Left Their Flavors For two centuries Sicily was Arab — and that presence never fully left. In Palermo’s Ballarò market, spices and noise and vendors calling out in a dialect that still carries echoes of Arabic. The Palatine Chapel — a Norman palace covered in Byzantine mosaics, built on Arab geometric principles — is the most beautiful proof of what happens when cultures stop fighting and start building together 🌋 And the Volcano Watched All of It Through every empire and every century, Mount Etna remained — Europe’s largest active volcano, visible from most of the island, still steaming, still reminding everyone who actually owns the place. ✈️ Getting There Palermo and Catania both have direct international connections. If you don’t go out and explore, you’ll think what’s in front of you is the whole world.” — Cinema Paradiso If I had to choose the most charming town on the northern coast of Sicily, it would definitely be Cefalù. It offers both the romantic Mediterranean vibe and historic ancient sites. It’s also the filming location of Cinema Paradiso. Compared to Taormina, Cefalù fits my imagination of a Sicilian town better. We stayed for three days and two nights and didn’t find it too long at all. If you don’t have much time, make sure to reserve at least one full day for Cefalù. 🅿️Recommended Parking Lots: Cefalù’s main street is restricted all day, so cars can only park outside the town. Here are three recommended parking lots: 1️⃣ The parking lot at Cefalù Train Station—just navigate to the train station. If you plan to visit Rocca di Cefalù, you can park here. 2️⃣ If the train station lot is full, you can choose “Parking Historical Center Dafne Cefalù,” which is very close to the train station, about a few hundred meters on foot. The price seems to be around €5 for 3 hours. 3️⃣ A large parking lot by the sea called Cefalù Beach Parking, convenient for beach visits. €1.5 per hour. 🏖️One-Day Itinerary in Cefalù: 1️⃣【Rocca di Cefalù】 Start your morning by visiting Rocca di Cefalù because the afternoon light is backlit for photos. Park at the train station first. Then navigate to “Punto Panoramico.” It’s about a 20-minute walk to the hiking entrance. The entrance fee is €5 per person. From the top, you can capture panoramic views of the town with red rooftops against the deep blue sea—truly beautiful. (Photos 2-5) 2️⃣After descending from the mountain, you’ll reach the commercial street with many cafes. Take a break here and enjoy a coffee. Try a Brioche gelato, which is gelato stuffed inside the local specialty brioche bread—delicious! (Photos 6-7) 3️⃣Next, navigate to “Porta Pescara,” the most famous beach in the old town, known for its iconic arch and blue umbrellas featured in the movie. If you’re feeling energetic, you can walk directly to the beach and explore the old town along the way. Many streets are very photogenic. (Photos 8-9) 4️⃣【Porta Pescara】 Location: Via Vittorio Emanuele, 105, 90015 Cefalù PA This is the spot for the classic arch photo. It can be quite crowded. (Photos 1, 10) 5️⃣Passing through the arch leads to the beach, which is also the former site of the Cinema Paradiso screening square. (Photos 11-13) It’s also an excellent spot to watch the sunset—don’t miss it! When the golden sunset reflects on the sea, the whole town sparkles beautifully. It’s breathtaking! (Photos 14-16) 6️⃣The old harbor’s small pebble beach, Molo Vecchio, is located at the end of the old town. It’s less crowded, and the waves crashing on the rocks are very picturesque. 7️⃣After watching the sunset, there are many seaside restaurants along the coastal street. We chose a restaurant called “Liska.” The view, food, and service were all excellent! (Photos 17-18)

Cleaniness 🧹 Clean and tidy, there are staffs helping to clean the bathroom and bed every day. 🛀 2. Facilities No kettle for hot water, ♨️if you’re booking a standard room. You could only get it from the bar which closed at 22:30. For those who might want cup noodles for supper, you better do it before 22:30 :) 🍜 3. Location 📍 Quite far away from the city centre. Bus never came... Rent a scooter 🛴 if you’re in a hurry, or ask staffs to call taxi. 🚕 📍 Itinerary Overview 🗓️ Day 1 📍Teatro Massimo di Palermo 🎭 The biggest opera house in Italy! The first 2 pictures have shown the outside and inside of the building. There are tours that brings you to explore the interior, and the tour guide is here to explain every detail, history and design. The tour takes 40 minutes ⏳, costs less than €10 💰per person which is really worth it! 🪄This is probably my fav spot in Palermo 💖 📍Chiesa e Monastero di Santa Caterina d'Alessandria There are 2 types of ticket 🎫 you could choose, one is only for entry costs €3, another one includes rooftop costs €10. Buy the tickets in your needs~ I highly recommend the €10 ticket, except for the rooftop, there’re many paintings or sculptures which explains Jesus’ sacrifice for humanity sins. By following the only route, you arrive to rooftop at the end. You can see Fontana Pretoria there. ⛲️ 🍝 Local Cuisine 1️⃣ Ke Palle (pic 8&9) Famous Sicilia fried rice ball 🍙 you must give it a try before leaving Sicily! They usually use risotto / pasta with cheese in the rice ball which is so crispy and perfect for a snack. There’re so many different flavors, like spicy 🌶️ flavor, mozzarella mushroom 🧀, squid ink 🦑 risotto, carbonara sauce with bacon 🥓 etc.. 2️⃣ Il Culinario (pic 10&11) Order their seafood pasta would be the best choice for a perfect dinner to end the day 🙏🏻 we ordered garlic clams spaghetti 🧄 and Cuttlefish ink pasta with red prawn tartare Mazara on top, both of them were so delicious!! 🤤 I just wish I had time to visit them again. I traveled around Italy for 3 weeks, and I especially loved the south. Among the places I visited, Sicily was the highlight of my trip. I spent 2 weeks there, and it was truly a life-changing experience! 📍Sicily / The largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily is famous for its rich seafood cuisine. · Palermo: The capital of Sicily and its largest port city, renowned for its artistic excellence. · Catania: The second largest city in Sicily, offering stunning views of Mount Etna. Unlike Palermo, it has a charming old-world feel. · Siracusa: A city about an hour by train from Catania, where ancient Greek culture is still preserved. 📍Napoli / Known as one of the world's three most beautiful ports, Napoli is the third largest city in Italy after Rome and Milan. Napoli pizza is especially famous! 🍕 📍Bacoli / A nearby city just 30-40 minutes from Napoli, Bacoli boasts beautiful beaches, lakes, and well-preserved ancient ruins. It's perfect for a day trip. 📍Positano / A stunning resort town that embodies the essence of Italy. The coastal cliff village feels like a watercolor painting. The atmosphere is truly magical, making it a must-visit when traveling to the south. 📍Amalfi / A coastal town you must visit before you die. Unlike Positano, it has its own unique charm. The beach is so beautiful that you can't resist swimming! Amalfi is perfect for a leisurely visit. 📍Sorrento / Famous for the Neapolitan song 'Come Back to Sorrento,' this city is vibrant with culture and art, and it's incredibly beautiful. 🫶🏽 · It's great to rent a car and visit Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi together. I highly recommend traveling to Southern Italy next summer in 2025!

Cefalù in Sicily is a popular holiday resort for Europeans. In addition to its beautiful beaches, it also has the Cefalù Cathedral and the Cefalù Rock behind the cathedral, which is also one of the highlights. There are also beautiful winding alleys and mouth-watering food: sea urchin and saffron risotto, green sauce, red shrimp and almond pasta. Every summer, this tourist attraction is always crowded with tourists. If you have the chance, you must take a trip to Cefalù!
