Strathcona travel guide and discussion

#easytravelpost Della Falls (440 m, Canada's highest) is in Strathcona PP, Vancouver Island, reached only by boat across Great Central Lake then 16 km up the Drury Creek trail. BC Parks day-use free (no entry gate), but the Great Central Lake boat taxi (private operator at the west end) runs ≈120 CAD return/car + passengers if you don't paddle. I drove Victoria→Campbell River→Port Alberni→Great Central Lake (3.5 hrs), paddled a rented canoe 5 km to the trailhead (or paid the taxi), and started 06:00. The cliff moss is the first 5 km: old-growth hemlock–fir with Polytrichum and Rhytidiadelphus on every nurse log, Drury Creek roaring beside you, then the canyon narrows and the falls hit in three tiers. I camped at the Della warden cabin site (free, first-come, 16 km in) and did the falls at 07:00 next morning—spray soaking the moss, zero people. Mistake: I tried to day-hike 32 km return and turned back at 11 km—2-day minimum. Another: I paddled the lake in a 15 km/h west wind and fought it 2 hrs; check wind, or take the taxi. Would you paddle Great Central Lake and hike Della Falls as a 2-day cabin trip, or pay the boat taxi and push for the same-day turnaround?

When you think of St. Dacrona, the first thing that comes to mind is probably the healing combination of nature, coastline, and pristine forest. But this time, I chose to avoid the tourist hotspots and venture deep into the Easter Bluff Trailhead for a tranquil walk on the trail during Fogust season. Fogust—the dense fog that is a summer-limited phenomenon on the western Pacific coast—made the entire walk...
