Hechi is beautiful but I truly won’t come a second time (honest travel guide)
A sincere post!! Hechi is seriously underrated 😭
Its mountains and waters offer an unfiltered, untouched healing vibe—emerald caves, endless green hills, fresh oxygen bars. Every scene feels like a hidden paradise, and everyone who visits is deeply impressed by its natural beauty.
But after touring the whole city, I really want to say: Hechi is great, beautiful, and healing, but I won’t come again.
It’s not that it’s not fun—it’s just exhausting, overwhelming, and really challenging!!
I’ve put together a super detailed honest travel guide for Hechi, including attraction reviews, itinerary tips, food, lodging, transportation, plus the most thorough do-not-do tips online. If you’re planning to go, you must read this to avoid 90% of the pitfalls!!
🌿 Why is Hechi worth visiting? (honest recommendation)
Hechi is definitely the hidden gem of Guangxi’s landscapes. There’s no commercial noise, few people, clean scenery, and a fully authentic atmosphere!
✅ Sanmenhai | real-life secret blue cave
The must-visit top attraction in Hechi!! Take a boat through karst caves where the water is a clear emerald blue. Sunlight streams through cave cracks, creating stunning light and shadow effects—every photo looks like wallpaper quality.
Cruising on the clear water surrounded by green hills feels like entering a fairyland. The blue knife fish storm here is a unique spectacle. The natural mountain and water scenery is unbeatable, rivaling Guilin and Yangshuo.
✅ Baimo Cave | natural summer oxygen bar
A breathtaking giant cave! The temperature inside is constant and comfortable, making it super cool in summer. You’ll see Tyndall light effects everywhere, giving a magical feel.
The air is rich in negative oxygen ions, fitting for the core attraction of the longevity hometown. Walking inside, you’ll see amazing rock formations and hear flowing water—healing and relaxing. Perfect for a slow, immersive visit.
✅ Qibainong | Guangxi’s most magnificent mountain and sea peaks
Endless mountains and valleys stretch to the horizon, with layers of peaks creating a vast, open view. The natural scenery is grand and soothing.
Standing on the viewing platform overlooking the mountains instantly cures all your blues. It’s a hidden gem perfect for photos, a mountain scene you’ll never see in the city.
✅ Bama longevity village | slow-paced paradise
Simple, honest locals and a slow lifestyle with no over-commercialization. The air is fresh and the environment peaceful.
Here you can escape city noise, experience simple rural life, relax your body and mind, and ease anxiety.
⚠️ Honest truth: why won’t I come a second time?
The scenery is perfect, but the travel experience really suffers because of hidden “deal breakers” in the details!
1. Mountain roads are a deal breaker! Extremely challenging driving
All Hechi attractions are scattered deep in the mountains, with huge distances between counties and spots.
The roads are all winding mountain roads with many sharp turns, narrow and steep, mostly without streetlights.
New drivers must not self-drive!! Passing oncoming cars is very difficult. Many village roads are narrow, requiring repeated reversing—very stressful.
Gas stations are rare in the mountains, so fill up before heading out. Navigation sometimes fails and leads to wrong small roads, which is very dangerous.
The whole trip by car causes severe motion sickness. Even those who don’t usually get sick will feel dizzy and nauseous after the full trip. It’s really exhausting.
2. Many seasonal pitfalls, don’t come in the rainy season
Never come from May to July!!
This is Hechi’s flood season, with almost daily short heavy rains and thunderstorms. The weather changes without warning—sunny one moment, pouring the next.
Sanmenhai’s water level rises sharply in the rainy season, often closing boat tours. Traveling all that way and not being able to play is frustrating.
Rain makes mountain roads slippery and foggy, blocking views and making travel very unsafe.
Cave floors are covered in moss, making slips very likely and ruining the experience.
3. Poor facilities, very low travel comfort
As a niche mountain and water destination, Hechi’s infrastructure is really underdeveloped.
There are very few small shops near deep mountain attractions. Drinking water and snacks cost double, making resupply inconvenient.
Public restrooms at remote viewing platforms are basic and unsanitary, with a poor experience.
Mountain homestays are mostly damp and cold, with poor soundproofing and unstable hot water, making nights uncomfortable.
There are almost no developed entertainment areas after sightseeing, so there’s little to do beyond visiting attractions.
4. Many hidden fees and traps to avoid
❌ Don’t join low-cost tour groups!!
They force early starts, long drives across counties, rushed sightseeing, and mandatory stops at specialty shops pushing hemp oil and silver jewelry—pure time waste.
❌ Don’t buy the so-called “internet-famous longevity water” sold on Bama streets!
It’s heavily overpriced with poor value, just regular water sold at a premium—pure scam.
❌ Free attractions hide fees
Many free wild spots and village viewing platforms charge about 10 yuan for parking, a default hidden cost.
❌ Don’t blindly follow internet-famous wild skylights
Many wild skylights lack rescue equipment and have hidden currents, posing serious safety risks. Never swim there alone.
📍 Super worry-free essential itinerary (no detours, no hassle)
Day 1: Arrive in Hechi from anywhere → check in to Jinchengjiang city → explore the night market and try local food
Day 2: Sanmenhai (core must-see, boat tour of blue cave) → stroll in longevity village to feel the slow life
Day 3: Baimo Cave for oxygen and summer cool → return trip
⚠️ Key advice: only visit core attractions! Don’t be greedy trying to check off niche wild spots.
They’re too spread out, and you’ll spend all your time traveling with no time to enjoy the scenery.
🍜 Must-try local food in Hechi (no regrets)
▪️ Hechi rice noodles: rich and flavorful broth, chewy noodles, lots of toppings, the local breakfast favorite
▪️ Fragrant pig barbecue: crispy skin, tender meat, no gamey taste, gets more flavorful the more you chew
▪️ Hemp oil chicken soup: light and nourishing, full of fresh flavor, a specialty of the longevity region
▪️ Sour pickles: locally pickled fresh fruit, sweet and sour, appetizing and refreshing
🏨 lodging tips to avoid pitfalls
✅ Best choice: Jinchengjiang city, Bama county
Mature commercial areas, full dining and lodging options, convenient transportation, night markets to explore, very comfortable
❌ Not recommended: homestays near deep mountain attractions
Generally damp, poor soundproofing, outdated facilities, lots of mosquitoes, expensive with low value
✅ Final summary
Hechi’s scenery is the purest and most healing mountain and water landscape I’ve ever seen.
Green hills, clear waters, secret caves, fresh oxygen bars—every scene is worth cherishing.
But it’s only suitable for travelers with plenty of time who enjoy slow travel, can endure hardships, and don’t seek commercial comforts.
Not suitable for lazy travelers, those prone to motion sickness, those who want high comfort, or those who want a quick checklist trip.
Once is enough to see the ultimate mountain and water scenery.
The views are unforgettable, but the travel fatigue is something I don’t want to experience again 😭
I hope every traveler to Hechi does their homework in advance and truly feels the gentle charm of this niche mountain and water paradise~
