Within minutes of entering the jungle near Lake Habbema, I was under attack. Leeches were everywhere—dropping from leaves, crawling up boot laces. Despite gaiters and DEET, one managed to attach inside my knee, leaving a bleeding, itchy wound. My Indonesian guide, Pak Agus, noticed my discomfort. He stopped, reached into his pack, and produced a small tin of thick, pungent yellow ointment made from local herbs and sulfur. Using a twig, he carefully applied it to the bite and smeared a ring around my ankles and wrists. The effect was immediate; leeches recoiled from the smell. He then showed me how to use tobacco leaves as a temporary deterrent and emphasized moving constantly—leeches prefer stationary hosts. His knowledge, passed down through generations, turned a nightmare trek into a manageable adventure. This experience taught me that local wisdom is irreplaceable in tropical environments. If visiting Papua (permits required from Jayapura and heavily restricted), hire local guides—they are mandatory and lifesavers.
