Recently, we decided to explore Mersing — and to our surprise, Mersing is SO much more than just the gateway to Tioman, Rawa, Babi Island and all the beautiful islands around it! 🌊 We took a few days to explore the mainland side of Mersing, and honestly, we found some really beautiful places that are definitely worth a visit. 1. Hidden View Point, Pantai Penyabong Have you seen that famous scenic road in Bali? This spot somehow reminded me of that — just a little smaller, I think! 😂 Unfortunately, it was raining when we arrived, so we couldn’t stop for photos. But we saw quite a number of people stopping here just to take pictures. Definitely one of those unexpected Mersing finds! 2. Pantai Penyabong Such a long, beautiful beach. The view is breathtaking, the breeze is amazing, and all I could think was… Why is nobody selling fresh coconut water here?! 😂🥥 Because honestly, sitting by this beach with a cold coconut drink would have been PERFECT. 3. Teluk Buih Now THIS was such a beautiful surprise. Teluk Buih feels like a little private beach — calm, quiet and incredibly relaxing. We stayed at Fishing Bay Resort here, and waking up to that view made the whole stay even better. If you’re looking for somewhere to slow down and just enjoy the sea, this is a lovely spot. 4. Kampung Paya Tinggal Another peaceful little discovery. There are chalets very close to the beach, and while everything is quite simple and decent, what I loved most was how quiet and peaceful the whole area felt. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need — nothing fancy, just the beach, the breeze and some peace. ❤️ After this trip, I realised something: Mersing isn’t just somewhere you pass through to catch a ferry. The mainland itself has so much to offer, and I’m so glad we took the time to explore it. If you’re heading to Mersing, give yourself an extra day or two before rushing off to the islands. You might be surprised by what you find. 🥰

Long story short: if you're chasing crystal-clear waters and snorkeling, I’d go with Malaysia. If you want a comfortable, action-packed, and more budget-friendly getaway, pick Vietnam. But the devil, as usual, isn’t in the details—it’s in the calendar. 🌊 Where the ocean is prettier Malaysia totally wins the "I accidentally stepped into a desktop wallpaper" award. The Perhentian Islands, Redang, and Tioman boast pristine white sand, crystal-clear water, corals, sea turtles, and fantastic snorkeling right off the shore. Vietnam has its share of gorgeous beaches, too: Phu Quoc, Nha Trang, Da Nang. However, the water along city coastlines isn't always that picture-perfect turquoise, and both the waves and water clarity heavily depend on the season. Winner for the best ocean: Malaysia. ☀️ When to go From November to March, I’d set my sights on Phu Quoc or western Malaysia: Langkawi. The Perhentian Islands and Redang, on the other hand, are hit by the northeast monsoon during this time: the sea gets rough, and some hotels close down. From March to September, Malaysia's eastern islands reveal their full tropical splendor. In Vietnam, Nha Trang and Da Nang are excellent during these months. Picking a country without considering the specific coast and month is like asking for "good weather" without giving an address. 🍜 Where it's more fun off the beach My vote goes to Vietnam here. Cafes, markets, street food, massages, tours, and bustling city life are all right there. Tired of lounging around? Within an hour, you could be exploring an old town, riding out to a waterfall, or debating with yourself whether you really need that third banh mi. On Malaysia's smaller islands, the itinerary is much simpler: ocean, jungle, boat rides, and more ocean. It’s absolutely perfect for unplugging. But if you’re the type who needs "somewhere to go" by day three, it might be a bit too quiet for you. 💰 Where it's cheaper and more convenient In Vietnam, it’s generally much easier to find budget-friendly accommodations, a wide variety of food, and cheap transport. It’s also a breeze to combine your beach vacation with city explorations and guided tours. Malaysian islands require a bit more logistics: a flight or bus, a transfer, and a speedboat. The selection of places to stay and eat might be more modest, especially on the more secluded beaches. My verdict: If you want a stunning ocean, corals, snorkeling, and peace and quiet—go to Malaysia. If you want beaches, delicious food, solid infrastructure, tours, and a more flexible budget—head to Vietnam. If I were looking for a strictly beach-only vacation, I'd choose Malaysia. But for a trip where the ocean is an important, yet not the only part of the experience, I’d pack my bags for Vietnam. How about you? I was looking for somewhere a little different for a staycation in Malaysia and somehow stumbled across Japamala. Easily one of my top finds of the year.You get a treehouse in the jungle and a beach right at your doorstep. Literally the best of both worlds! What I loved most was how quiet it was. The whole place feels like your own little private island. There are so many cute little nooks scattered around the resort where you can have a picnic, read a book, sunbathe, or just do absolutely nothing. It's also a sustainable resort, and while it's definitely not the newest property around, that's honestly part of the charm. It has so much character and feels like it's been thoughtfully built around nature rather than over it. If you're looking for luxury in the shiny-marble-and-chandeliers sense, this probably isn't it.
