The fair lasts for two weeks from late April to early May and showcases around three million tulips of all colors and varieties. From Takaoka Station or Shin-Takaoka Station, take the JR Johana Line to Tonami Station (approx 20 minutes). During the duration of the fair, free shuttle buses run frequently between the station and the tulip park. There are also small museums and playground for children in the park.

The characteristic of the Shogawa Gorge cruise is that there is only one company operating the boat service along the entire river bank. When the boat sails out of the port, the people on the boat can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the boat floating between the high and low canyons as if they were traveling alone to a beautiful place. As the light and shadow change along the way, the color and reflection of the water surface are constantly adjusted like a famous painter's palette, and sometimes flying birds break the tranquility. #springtravel Taken May2021. Beautiful tulip fair, millions of tulips were bloom in different variations. The new tulip tower was nice , few people that time because it rained. Free shuttle bus from station and places to the venue. Thankful to the people who put efforts on creating such a beautiful flower garden, lucky enough to be able to visit and experience that said fair. I really love flowers so I enjoyed so much even if it rained that day. Hopefully I can visit again next tulip fair. Some activities and events were cancelled due to the virus outbreak.

#springtravel A lovely little park next to the damned up area of the Sho River. Recommended for a 30 minute walk or to enjoy the picknic opportunities. There are a couple restaurants close to the main parking area, which also includes a tourist centre. Nice park memorializing the dam built along the river here. There are some restaurants, shops, and both paid and free museums. Kid friendly. They also have occasional festivals here. It's worth a stop if you're in the area and interested in learning more about local woodworking traditions. Free restrooms are also available, as is a simple bicycle station. The souvenir shop is well-stocked with various local products. Bit touristy.

This time, I revisited Johana in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, which is introduced on Japan's Little Kyoto website. About seven years ago, I took the World Heritage Bus to visit the Gokayama Gassho-style World Cultural Heritage site, only passing by Johana briefly. This time, I boarded the same bus at the same location and got off at Johana. Although I had a JR Pass, the train schedule didn’t align well after having breakfast in Kanazawa, so I opted for the bus. When exploring Little Kyotos, they generally fall into two categories. The first type includes castle towns (Jokamachi) with large castles or areas like Bukeyashiki-dori (Samurai Residences Street). The second type features clusters of temples and commercial facilities, and Johana belongs to the latter. The town is dotted with temples, pagodas, and preserved shopping streets. Located in a terrain similar to Kyoto, Johana is surrounded by mountains and rivers. Being far from the sea, it lacks the coastal scenery or seafood culture. The town isn’t very large, so you can see most of the notable spots within about an hour and a half. It’s part of the World Heritage area adjacent to Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, which I visited previously. Since the visit progressed faster than expected, I was lucky to add a trip to Tonami, the tulip city located between Takaoka and Johana. Tonami seemed like an interesting place for flower enthusiasts, especially during tulip season. As a suburban town, it’s equipped with facilities like Aeon Mall, Don Quijote, and roadside stations along the JR line. On the day of my visit, the early morning rain cleared up, and the weather turned sunny. Although it was quite hot, the mountain town’s sunlight wasn’t too harsh, and the gentle breeze made it pleasant to explore. I managed to take some great photos as well. Thank you!

In spring, this place is full of cherry blossoms along the riverbanks, while in summer, it is lush and cool. In autumn, the leaves turn orange, red, and yellow, reflecting on the water's surface spectacularly. In winter, when snow falls on the mountains, it creates a peaceful and beautiful atmosphere, like an old Japanese painting.
