The autumn colors at these three spots are each more stunning than the last. Before they get popular, better save this! 🍁 Micang Mountain National Forest Park ⛰️ Highlights Autumn here needs no filter. The whole mountain looks like a spilled palette, with layers of red, yellow, and green covering the ridges. The core area from Jiaguo Mountain to the Natural Gallery is breathtaking. Alpine meadows and colorful forests wrapped in mist feel like stepping into a painting. Be sure to climb Xianglu Peak. At over 2,000 meters, the view of Micang Mountain’s autumn colors and the rolling sea of clouds will give you goosebumps. 📋 Itinerary It’s best to enter the park early, take the shuttle to Jiaguo Mountain, then hike through the Natural Gallery. The Bazhong Thousand Buddha Cliff Grottoes, a national key cultural relics protection unit, are located in Thousand Buddha Village, Tongjiang County. Carved between 663 AD and 719 AD (the third year of the Longshuo era of the Tang Dynasty), the grottoes spanned 56 years. There are 54 niches containing over 3,000 statues, distributed across the front and left side of a 10-meter-high, 53-meter-wide white sandstone rock face. The 28 niches on the front date from the High Tang period, while the 26 niches on the left date from the Early Tang period. The entire group of statues comprises niches depicting Pure Land transformations, the Eight Legions of Devas and Asuras, preaching scenes, a seven-tiered pagoda, and a screen displaying thousands of Buddhas. The statues mainly include Shakyamuni Buddha, Avalokiteshvara, Mahasthamaprapta, the Four Buddhas, the Three Buddhas of the Three Times, Bhaisajyaguru Buddha, guardian deities, donors, and musicians. Niche shapes include square niches, double-eaved niches, and arched niches. The carving techniques employed include high relief, low relief, line engraving, and openwork carving. The Thousand Buddha Cliff Grottoes are grand in scale, ornately decorated, and exquisitely carved, with lifelike details. They possess both the simplicity of the early Tang Dynasty and the elegance of the High Tang Dynasty, making them invaluable material for the study of Tang Dynasty clothing, art, painting, sculpture, and architecture. In particular, the 3.7-meter-high seven-tiered relief pagoda niche and the four Buddhas seated side by side niche, with their overlapping herringbone-shaped brackets, are unique examples, second only to the line engravings on the lintel stone of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi'an, and are precious material for the study of architectural history and art.

The stalactites under colorful lights look like a crystal palace. When I posted a video of rowing in the dark river, friends thought I was at some artificial photo spot, but it’s a real geological park 🥹 Also, Guangwu Mountain’s new night tour “New Dream of Guangwu Mountain” features a light and shadow show with the mountain as the backdrop. The cave steps are slippery, so don’t walk and use your phone at the same time. Bazhong currently has no high-speed rail. Fly to Dazhou or Nanchong, then carpool for about 2 hours. The attractions are spread out. Driving yourself is best but the mountain roads have many curves. New drivers should be cautious, and even experienced drivers should stick to daylight hours. You can check the details on Trip.com. Don’t forget your ID. 🍜 Food recommendations deserve a special mention Nanjiang yellow goat soup hot pot is the top choice for your first meal after arrival. The broth is so fresh you don’t need dipping sauce. The meat is tender and not gamey. Drinking a bowl in the mountain breeze will revive you 🍲 In Enyang Ancient Town, Yin Ji’s freshly baked sugar sesame cakes are thin, crispy, and crumbly. The brown sugar filling is just sweet enough, not overpowering. Perfect for snacking while walking. Tangjia’s secret marinated duck is an old shop on Huilong Street. The aroma hits you as soon as you tear it open. Pair it with hot tea for the perfect combo. Shuangsheng’s herbal chicken soup is clear but flavorful, very friendly for women. You must have Bazhong oil tea in the morning. Crispy fried dough soaked in tea with pepper flavor. The local favorite spot always has a line but it’s worth it. Tongjiang white fungus soup is a great dessert after meals. Cooked until gelatinous, it soothes spiciness and moisturizes. Jiao Lin fish and Jiangkou green catfish tofu pudding are also worth ordering. The fish is so tender chopsticks can’t hold it, and the tofu pudding soaked in fish broth is amazing. 🗺 Here’s a lazy 3-day, 2-night itinerary Day 1: Arrive in Bazhong and head straight to Enyang Ancient Town. Spend the afternoon exploring the old street and Ming-Qing architecture. Wait for the lanterns to light up at dusk. Stay in the ancient town or return to Bazhong city. Tangjia restaurant and Yin Ji sesame cakes are nearby for meals. Day 2: Get up early and drive about 1.5 hours to Guangwu Mountain. Take the Xianglu Mountain cable car to the summit to watch the sea of clouds in the morning. In the afternoon, hike Heixiong Valley or visit Shiba Yue Tan to see the water. Stay overnight in Guangwu Mountain town. Have yellow goat soup hot pot. If you want to join the fun, catch the night tour “Dream of Guangwu Mountain.” Day 3: Drive 2 hours from Guangwu Mountain to Nuoshui River. Take a boat in Longhu Cave and choose two from Lion Cave and Zhongfeng Cave to explore. If it’s hot after the caves, go for canyon rafting or water bumper boats.
