I visited as a female solo traveler. I can't eat a lot, so I consulted the staff and they recommended the 3,000 yen course, which allows you to sample local dishes in small portions. During my recent trip to Kagoshima, I visited three places I absolutely had to try: the ramen restaurant Jabon Ramen, Tenmonkan Wakana Main Branch, and the tonkatsu specialty restaurant Katsuju Amu Plaza Kagoshima Branch. I'll leave honest reviews of each. ⸻ 🍜 Jabon Ramen – Char Siu Ramen As befitting Kagoshima's iconic ramen restaurant, it was bustling with locals and tourists alike. I ordered the Char Siu Ramen. The broth, a signature Kagoshima ramen dish, was rich yet not greasy, and smooth. The chashu was generously placed on top, but it wasn't overly fatty, and it was savory yet tender, complementing the broth perfectly. The noodles were just the right thickness and chewy, complementing the broth perfectly. After finishing the bowl, I thought, "Ah, so that's why the locals come here too." ⸻ 🍲 Tenmonkan Wakana Main Branch – Black Pork Shabu Shabu & Snacks I'd heard Wakana was a must-visit in Kagoshima, so I had high expectations, and I was very satisfied. Even though I was alone, I was able to enjoy a single serving of black pork shabu shabu. The thinly sliced black pork was lightly dipped in the broth, and the rich yet light flavor filled my mouth. The accompanying chicken sashimi was fresh and had a unique, savory flavor that was impressive. It was a perfect accompaniment to drinks. Naturally, I ordered Kagoshima sweet potato shochu, and its savory yet clean aftertaste paired perfectly with the shabu shabu. The miso oden I ordered was warm and rich, perfect as a snack to end my evening. I tried black pork tonkatsu at Katsuju in Amu Plaza. The batter was crispy, not too thick, and not at all greasy. The black pork inside was juicy, savory, and tender, making it a truly delightful bite. Served with rice, miso soup, and cabbage salad, it was a perfect meal. The meat's natural flavor was noticeably different from regular tonkatsu, making me think, "This is Kagoshima black pork!" They have a wide variety, including chocolate, strawberry, matcha, and pudding, but the regular Polar Bear is a must-try. One thing to note when ordering: They offer regular and baby sizes of shaved ice, but the regular size is quite large, so large that it's hard for one person to finish it. The regular size is fine if you want to share, but if you're eating alone, the baby size is plenty filling, so I recommend that. You might think there's no need to go all the way there since you can get it at a convenience store, but I definitely recommend trying the authentic flavor at least once.

This is a delicious soba restaurant in Aira. Their locally grown soba is popular in the summer and was delicious. The broth was especially good, so I drank it all up. I highly recommend it. Please give it a try!

We started our day with breakfast at this unique Starbucks near Sengan-en, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our Kagoshima trip. We dropped by Mawaru Sushi Mekkemon Dolphin Port during our time in Kagoshima—and it quickly became one of our favorite sushi stops! VOUL is a spice curry specialty store that I have always been curious about. There are counter seats here, so it is not awkward to go alone. The store is very clean and the skateboards on display are beautiful! The five-spice curry is a fragrant and rich curry with more spices than I thought, and it is delicious to say the least! Located next to the central station in Ichiban Street, we discovered a local izakaya (Boathead Cuisine Fish Village) that serves fresh catches directly from the fishermen. A casual visit turned into a lucky find! 🥰 Appetizers included grilled sea snails, marinated fresh fish, and fish roe with greens—refreshing and delightful. The raw anchovy sashimi was a unique dish, paired with a miso and fruit vinegar sauce. This is a specialty of Kagoshima, and a must-try when visiting the area! Grilled mackerel was simply prepared to highlight its natural sweetness—absolutely delicious! 👍 Squid, cuttlefish, and seared marlin were incredibly fresh—just perfect. Crispy deep-fried deep-sea fish had a crunchy exterior and juicy, tender meat inside—so tasty! 😋 Cuttlefish fish paste balls were wonderfully bouncy and best enjoyed hot. 👍 Crispy fried chicken was also quite good. Deep-fried anchovies offered a different preparation and flavor compared to the sashimi version.
