Masada means "fortress" in Hebrew. It is a shallow fortress located at the end of the Judean Desert west of the Dead Sea. It is an impregnable terrain of 450m above sea level. Alexander the Great first fortified it to defend the southern border, and later King Hyerok took over this place and built a luxurious fortress like an iron wall to protect himself. Masada is a wide flat area on the top of the mountain that is 600m long and 250m wide. It was built with walls on all sides and used as a food warehouse, water storage, armory, public bathhouse, swimming pool, villa, and various other facilities.
After the first Jewish revolt in A.D. 60, zealous Jews took it from the Roman army that had occupied it after Herod died. It did not play a big role in the Jewish rebellion, but later became a refuge from Roman attacks. In AD 70, the Roman army occupied Jerusalem, suppressed the Jewish rebellion, and the zealous Jews gathered at Masada to fight to the death for three years. Under the command of General Silva, 15,000 Roman soldiers set up eight camps and faced 967 men at Masadae. After three years of persistent attacks by the Roman army, they were finally at the brink of death, and they decided to kill themselves, killing all the male heads of their families... After that, they drew lots for ten men and... Among the remaining ten, one man showed off his lot... He killed nine, and the remaining one set fire to all the buildings and committed suicide. After that, when the Roman army occupied Masada, surprisingly, two wives and five children were still alive, and the whole tragedy of the castle became known to the world. Even now, many students visit here to learn, and soldiers who are discharged shout that Masada will not fall anymore, and they say that they are patriotic.
