This shrine has a torii gate in the sea, which is a beautiful and fantastic sight created by the ebb and flow of the tides. It was named Nagao because a giant stingray carrying the enshrined deity, Wadatsumi no Kami, landed on the land, and the stingray's tail is shaped like a sword, so the shrine was named Nagao Tsurugi Shrine. The main shrine is on high ground and there are steep stairs. I've visited before, but the tide was low and I couldn't see the torii gate floating in the sea. I was very impressed to see it for the first time this time. If you plan to visit, we recommend checking the low tide table in advance to make sure you check the time!! Triangle Station is the terminus of the Amakusa Triangle Line, about 50 minutes by ordinary train from Kumamoto. The station is not large, but it is all made of wood, which feels classic and solid. #slowtraveling Uki (Kumamoto Prefecture, JR Kagoshima Main Line, 25 min from Kumamoto, ¥480) was a castle town under the Sumoto clan, and though the castle is gone, the grid of the old jinya district survives: a 400m lane of earthen-wall warehouses, a 1780s shrine gate, and a public bath ("Uki Sento," ¥460, 15:30–22:30, closed Thu, cash only) two blocks off the station. I arrived on a Tuesday at 14:00, walked the castle-grid lane (free, 24/7) — found the foundation stones of the north gate under a cedar, a ¥100 vending-machine coffee, and zero other tourists. Came back at 16:00 for the sento: 43°C indoor tub, 41°C cypress outdoor tub, a wall mural of the castle as it "might have looked." A ¥150 Calpis after. Mistake: going Thursday (sento closed) — do Mon/Tue/Wed/Fri/Sat/Sun. Another: expecting castle ruins — there's a stone and a plaque, not a tower. Rule: no tattoos visible (cover with a rash guard or bandage, ask the owner); no washing at the tap, use the shower stool. Opinion: Uki's castle town is a ghost you trace with your feet — the grid is the ruin, and the sento is the only building still doing its 1908 job. Discussion: when a castle leaves only its street plan behind, is the town more or less of a castle town than a reconstructed keep would be?
