#bucketlistdestinations Upper Slaughter is a peaceful hidden gem within the Cotswolds, quieter than its popular neighbour Lower Slaughter. Honey‑coloured stone cottages scatter across the village, beside the gentle River Eye with clear flowing water. Few crowds wander these quiet lanes. You can take slow walks across soft green meadows, admire timeless old‑world architecture and listen to the soft sound of running water. #couplegoalstravel A few days ago I explored the Cotswolds, and I honestly think it’s one of the most romantic places you can visit in the UK. Picture yourselves wandering through quiet stone villages, crossing tiny bridges, strolling along peaceful rivers, stopping for afternoon tea, and getting lost down charming little streets that feel frozen in time. These are the places I wouldn’t miss: 🤍 Castle Combe 🤍 Lacock 🤍 Bibury 🤍 Stow-on-the-Wold 🤍 Lower Slaughter 🤍 Bourton-on-the-Water Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, planning a surprise day trip, or simply want to spend quality time together, the Cotswolds has that slow, cosy atmosphere that makes every moment feel special. If you can, stay until golden hour. Watching the villages glow in the evening light with someone you love is something you’ll remember for a long time. 🌿✨ #Tripcom #Cotswolds #RomanticGetaway #CouplesTravel #RomanticTravel #England #VisitEngland #CastleCombe #Bibury #Lacock #StowOnTheWold #LowerSlaughter #BourtonOnTheWater

Hey everyone! I'm your old friend Teresa, and this time I'm taking you into a unique British countryside experience~ Driving from bustling Shanghai to the tranquil British town of Cheltenham, it felt like traveling through a time tunnel. 🌟 🌳 The view outside the window is a painting Ellenborough Park Hotel is nestled in such a beautiful town. The hotel is surrounded by vast green spaces, and in the distance, you can even see the outline of Cheltenham Racecourse. Waking up in the morning, opening the window, fresh air mixed with the scent of flowers and plants wafts in, as if you're in a tranquil pastoral painting. 🎨 🧖‍♀️ Lazy SPA Time As a hotel enthusiast, I certainly wouldn't miss the SPA here. Upon entering, the warm lighting and subtle lavender scent instantly make you relax. The therapist's technique was very professional, and the head-to-toe massage left me feeling completely refreshed. At the end, they thoughtfully offered a cup of hot tea, making me feel utterly pampered. 🍵 🏊‍♀️ Outdoor Pool, a Summer Must-Have for Cooling Down Coming here in summer, the outdoor pool is definitely a must-visit spot. The water is crystal clear, surrounded by lush greenery, and there are comfortable lounge chairs for sunbathing. My daughter also loved playing here; she even made a few new friends and had a blast. 🌞 🍽️ A Culinary Journey, Starting Here The two restaurants within the hotel each have their own unique character. The Horse Box offers authentic British cuisine; the roasted lamb chops and beer-braised chicken were absolutely delicious. After dinner, we would also go to the bar for a nightcap, ordering a classic English whiskey and enjoying a leisurely evening. 🍹 In short, Ellenborough Park Hotel is not just a place to stay, but a sanctuary where you can truly relax and unwind. I'll definitely come back again if I get the chance! ✨

Cheltenham town, England. We visited Cheltenham in Gloucestershire for a day’s outing. A pleasant town with many old buildings from its Regency past. We particularly liked the Pittville Pump Room, which is a remnant from Cheltenham’s past as a Spa town. Here we walked around the well kept grounds and visited the Pittville Boathouse cafe for tea, coffee and ice creams. A very pleasant stop right next to the water’s edge of the boating lake. After, we passed the Church of St. Gregory the Great and took photos of the town library too as it was a lovely looking building. In Devonshire Street we saw an incredible mural painted on a wall of owls by possibly a ‘Sophie Tuttle.’ All in all, a pleasant, easy place to visit, not too loud and with a lot of lovely, well maintained old buildings.

#aprilblooms Cheltenham in spring is a quiet kind of magic. As winter fades, the town gently unfurls its charm—blossoms burst open along the Promenade, the scent of cherry and magnolia dances in the air, and the whole town seems to breathe in technicolour. Imperial Gardens becomes the crown jewel this time of year. Perfectly manicured flowerbeds bloom in layered rows—daffodils, tulips, hyacinths—splashing colour across the crisp green lawns. Locals linger on benches, sipping takeaway coffee, as if trying to make the moment last a little longer. A walk through Montpellier is a must—Regency architecture framed by blooming trees, boutique shop windows dressed like Easter eggs, and cozy cafés spilling life onto pavements. At every turn, there’s a quiet beauty that doesn’t beg for attention, it just is. If you're lucky, you might catch the Jazz Festival in April—notes of saxophone and trumpet swirling around the blossom-heavy air. The town feels alive but never rushed, like it knows how to celebrate without noise. Cheltenham in bloom isn't loud or dramatic—it’s a soft kind of wonder. It’s for those who notice details: petals on cobblestones, shadows through wrought iron, the way the light hits sandstone just before dusk. It's spring in its most elegant form.

No wonder they say the countryside is the heart of England 🫀||🇬🇧 Until I came to the Cotswolds... This is one of the most representative rural areas in England It is as famous as Provence in France and Tuscany in Italy It is not an exaggeration to say that this is the soul of England The real scenery and English people are actually here 💘 ✅ In the Cotswolds, there are several surprising towns you can't miss ❶ Bibury ▫️ Iconic Arlington Row 🏘️ ▫️ Visit Bibury Trout Farm, which has fish ponds and picnic spots ❷ Bourton-on-the-Water ▫️ Clear streams and stone arch bridges, the Venice of the Cotswolds 💧 ▫️ Take a boat tour or enjoy afternoon tea at a riverside tea house ❸ Chipping Campden ▫️ Fairytale-style thatched cottages 🛖, shaped like mushrooms ▫️ St. James Church is also worth a visit ❹ Stow-on-the-Wold ▫️ A town on a hilltop in the area, with a relatively high altitude ▫️ Many antique shops, galleries, and independent shops ❺ Broadway ▫️ Famous 18th-century Gothic tower - Broadway Tower ▫️ Many beautiful shops and cafes ☕ ❻ The Slaughters ▫️ Upper Slaughter/Lower Slaughter villages ▫️ Slow-paced romantic villages, you can walk along the river ❼ Castle Combe ▫️ Strong medieval atmosphere, well-preserved ancient village ▫️ Many movie locations 🎞️ beautiful church castle ❽ Moreton-in-Marsh ▫️ Ancient bell tower and many antique shops, prices are relatively high ▫️ Open-air market every Tuesday 🚗 Transportation: The Cotswolds is known for its inconvenient transportation, so driving or renting a car is better.

The Cotswolds, also known as Cotswold, is located in the southwest of England, not far from London. It is governed by five counties including Oxford, and its boundary is roughly from Stratford-upon-Avon to the south, extending to Radstock near Bath. Most of the buildings here are built with Cotswold stone, which presents a unique honey color, making the architectural style of the entire region unique. Many buildings have a long history, dating back to the 16th century or even earlier. There are quaint country houses, elegant manors, spectacular castles and historic churches. In addition, the Cotswolds also has vast fields, dense forests, clear streams and beautiful gardens. The Cotswolds include: Bourton-on-the-Water, Bibury, Castle Combe, Chipping Campden, Moreton-in-Marsh, etc. Although they are not far apart, due to the limited time this time, only the first two places were visited. Bourton-on-the-Water: Known as the "Venice of the Cotswolds", the Windrush River runs through the town, there are many ancient stone bridges on the river, and there are colorful flowers decorated with century-old stone houses on both sides, as well as exquisite cafes, restaurants and shops, full of tranquility and leisurely atmosphere, it is a good place for leisurely walks. Bibury: Known as the "most beautiful village in England", there are famous Arlington Row houses here, built in 1380, small houses made of beeswax-colored stones, very quaint and elegant, surrounded by beautiful pastoral scenery and streams. In short, the Cotswolds is a charming area, its beautiful scenery, long history, rich culture and unique rural atmosphere attract tourists to come for sightseeing, vacation and experience rural life, and it is one of the popular destinations for rural tourism in the UK.

The Oxfordshire countryside is truly healing 💚 🚶‍♀️Hiking route: Upper Slaughter → The Old Mill → The Old Stone Bridge → Bourton-on-the-Water → Bibury This route is absolutely stunning! The entire way is filled with classic English pastoral scenery; every snapshot looks like an oil painting 🎨 🏘️My favorite spots: ✔️The Old Mill: Ancient buildings beside the stone mill and waterwheel. During the day, with the mountain stream babbling, it feels like time has traveled back to the Middle Ages ✔️The Old Stone Bridge: The mottled bridge is full of stories. Standing on the bridge and looking out, everything in sight is like a scene from a movie ✔️Bourton-on-the-Water: It feels like a mini Venice! Stroll along the river and experience the unique, leisurely pace of an English town ✔️Bibury: With lush green grass and scattered stone cottages, it's a village straight out of a fairy tale ✨ 🍺Food & drink: I had a drink at a canvas-tent pub in the Cotswolds, and the atmosphere was perfect! I highly recommend the local craft beer at the Hawkstone pub 🍻. It has a rich malty aroma, and every sip is a pleasant surprise! A 100% perfect recommendation 🌟 Every frame of the Cotswolds on a sunny day is worth cherishing 📸 For those traveling to Oxford, be sure to add a countryside stroll to your itinerary! This is the most authentic way to experience England~

My hubby and I often take a week to visit somewhere. Stop and stay. But we decided to do something a little different. We started by staying with friends in Bognor Regis and going to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. It took us 2 days to fully enjoy everything. From the HMS Warrior, onto HMS Victory and also to see the Mary Rose. Was a great experience. We then travelled to Southampton to join a cruise on the MSC Virtuosa. This was a 4 day cruise to Cork. After the cruise we headed to Bath. We stayed in the Boathouse. It was lovely to sit on the balcony of the boat house and listen to the birds. The Bath cruise came past a few times and we were able to wave to the passengers. The Boathouse is walking distance from Bath centre, where you can visit the famous historic Baths and if you choose the right day you can enjoy walking through the wonderful market, enjoying the sights of all the different products and smell the pleasing aroma of the food on sale. We took a stroll along the canal, watching the boats stop and wait for the locks as they headed down the canal. After 2 days in Bath we took a trip to the idyllic Cotswolds. Staying in the Colebourne Inn which was a little worn but clean, the staff were friendly and breakfast was provided. We were near enough to several quaint little Cotswold villages. We could take in Moreton-in-Marsh (with its little market), Stow-on-the-Wold, Lower Slaughter, (having a nice quiet walk along the river) and Burton-on-the-water, (where I was able to browse in the little gift shops while my hubby enjoyed the Motor museum) in approx. 1 hour round trip (obviously not including stopping). After 2 days in the Cotswolds we travelled to Stratford-Upon-Avon, not forgetting to stop at Broadway station to catch a steam train to Cheltenham race course and back again. We had travelled to Stratford-upon-Avon to look into where my Father in law had been born and stayed at the MacDonald Alverston Manor Hotel. This was near the centre of Stratford-upon-avon so you could easily get to the shops and catch a boat along the canal. My Father in laws old school had been turned into a lovely coffee shop, Boston Tea Party. Although it had been done out you could easily see it had been a school from the outside. Last stop was Cheddar. We stayed at Double Gate Farm. Although this was a nice place to stay we found it was about 20 minutes drive to Cheddar Gorge and caves. But it was well worth the drive. The caves were fascinating and after we walked up the 274 steps Jacobs ladder to the walk around the top of the gorge. Make sure you take some water even on a not so hot day. As we headed home we stopped at Wells to take in the sight of the magnificent Catherdral with all of its detail. Then home to see my little cat who I had missed and had clearly missed me 💕 Great couple of weeks and would recommend to those wanting to experience a holiday exploring. 🙂

🍂 The beauty of the UK in September and October doesn't need filters—morning mist pressing on the grass, ivy clinging to honey-colored stone walls, and highland winds turning the birch trees half-gold. There are no summer crowds and none of the gaudy feel of Christmas lights. It's just that damp, gentle, slow pace you see in old British dramas 🌫️ · ----- 🧱 The Cotswolds: Bibury to Lower Slaughter Why choose this? Don't crowd the main streets for postcard shots; ducking into the back alleys is where the real vibe is: honey-colored stone houses, ivy-covered low walls, and ducks by the stream that ignore you. When the morning light hits in early October, it looks like an old oil painting that hasn't quite woken up yet 🖼️ Key highlights Authentic English village charm without needing edits. It's quiet, there are no loud tour guides, and just a few steps away are damp grassy slopes and old stone bridges 🌿 How to do it Enter the village before 9:00 AM > Walk along the stream > Skip the sightseeing bus, just wander the alleys for 20 minutes and you're done · ----- 🏔️ Scottish Highlands: Glencoe to Glenfinnan Why choose this? London is too polished; this is the wild side of the UK. By late September, the birch trees turn gold and the heather has a hint of rusty purple. There's always low mist in the valley, and the steam train crossing the bridge makes for a perfect shot without any posing 🚂 Key highlights Moors, cliffs, cold lakes, and mossy stones. No candy-colored backdrops here. It's windy but sophisticated, like layering the filming locations of "Harry Potter" over the real wilderness 🌫️ How to do it Rent a car and drive a stretch of the valley road > Wait for the afternoon light at the Glenfinnan viewpoint > Don't follow a tour group, just park on the side of the road and watch the mist clear for half an hour · ----- 🌊 Lake District: Buttermere to Derwentwater Why choose this? The main pier at Windermere feels too much like a tourist assembly line. Head west to the smaller lakes where the water is still, the mountains are low, and sheep graze lazily on the slopes. The autumn mist and lake light that Wordsworth wrote about are still there 🦢 Key highlights Reflections, stone-walled pastures, and old oak trees drooping over the shore. The colors are richest in mid-October, with mushrooms and deer tracks under the trees 🍄 How to do it Walk along the lake around 2:00–3:00 PM > Find a stone step and sit until the blue hour > Don't rush for a boat tour, just take your time along the shoreline · ----- 🍁 New Forest: Lyndhurst to Bolderwood Why choose this? You can get your fill of autumn colors without heading to Scotland. This old forest in Southern England has ponies, acorns, and half-withered ferns. The redwood-lined paths feel like falling into an old fairy tale, with that relaxed vibe of locals walking their dogs on the weekend 🐴 Key highlights Layers of golden and bronze tree canopies, crunchy leaves on the ground, and the occasional scent of wild boar rooting in the mud. It's quiet and feels very uncommercial 🍂 How to do it Enter the forest trails before 5:00 PM > Skip the amusement areas > Walk along the dirt paths for 40 minutes to catch the dappled sunset light · ----- 🥧 A few bites to grab (standard local pub/tearoom fare, no specific famous spots) · For afternoon tea, get a scone with clotted cream first, then jam, and a pot of Earl Grey is all you need 🍵 · Near the forest, grab some bangers, Yorkshire pudding, and a side of gravy—perfect for cold weather 🥩 · At a corner dessert shop, grab a spoonful of sticky toffee pudding or apple crumble; don't bother with fancy new-style desserts 🍎 · ----- 🗺️ A stress-free one-week itinerary Days 1–2: Stay one night in the Cotswolds. Just visit two old villages, don't overpack your schedule Days 3–4: Head north to the Lake District. Stare at the lake and spend the night in a local pub Days 5–7: Continue north into the Highlands. Take it slow through Glencoe, the outskirts of Loch Ness, and Glenfinnan. Don't rush to tick off an Inverness checklist 🌌 No tour bus flags, no queuing for "must-eat" lists, and no full-package castle guided tours—the best way to experience autumn in the UK is to put on a pair of old shoes and let the mist and fallen leaves guide your route ☕🍁

A peaceful little village where time seems to stand still. 🌿🏡 If Lower Slaughter captured your heart, Upper Slaughter offers a quieter alternative that feels like stepping into the true English countryside. 🤍 Nestled in a valley alongside the River Eye, this village is surrounded by honey-colored stone houses, narrow lanes, charming gardens, and rolling meadows. Its charm lies in the silence and the beautifully preserved rural atmosphere. 🌿 Where to explore? · The Square — The heart of this tiny village. · St Peter’s Church — A historic church at the center of the community. · River Eye — The gentle stream that meanders through the village. · Stroll along the lanes and footpaths around the village to admire the stone cottages and Cotswold views. · You can easily walk to Lower Slaughter, making it a perfect twin-village excursion. Upper Slaughter perfectly mirrors the traditional Cotswolds aesthetic: honey-hued cottages, rolling hills, and rural paths connecting the villages. 🌳 🚶‍♀️ If you have the time, I highly recommend walking between Upper and Lower Slaughter in a single day. The distance between the two villages is about 1 mile, and the trek through the countryside and meadows makes the journey part of the experience, not just the destination. 🚆 Getting There Upper Slaughter does not have a train station. For those not renting a car, you must take a train to a hub like Moreton-in-Marsh and then take a bus or taxi, or walk from a nearby village. The Cotswolds transport system connects Moreton-in-Marsh to London and other major cities, with bus links to several local villages. 💷 Entry Fee: Free. There is no charge to walk the streets, public areas, or the surrounding countryside. ⏰ Best Time to Visit Early morning and late afternoon are ideal, as the soft light enhances the golden stone houses, and the atmosphere is even quieter than during the day. 🌅 📸 Photography Tips You don't need a specific landmark; just try photographing the narrow streets lined with stone houses, using the meadows and trees as a backdrop. It creates a very natural English countryside aesthetic. Upper Slaughter might not excite you in the first minute, but as you walk through, it becomes a place you won't want to leave. 🤍🌿

A riverside village so peaceful you’ll never want to leave 🌿🏡 If you’re looking for a side of the Cotswolds that’s even more peaceful than Bibury or Bourton-on-the-Water, I highly recommend pinning Lower Slaughter on your map. 🤍 This charming village sits along the River Eye, where golden stone cottages line the stream alongside quaint stone bridges and natural gardens. It’s so picturesque that some corners feel like a scene from a classic British film. 🎞️🌿 Interestingly, the name "Slaughter" has nothing to do with anything macabre; it actually stems from the Old English word "slohtre," meaning a muddy or marshy place by a stream. ✨ Highlights to Explore · River Eye — The heart of the village, where crystal-clear water flows past historic stone houses and small bridges. · The Old Mill — An ancient riverside mill and one of the most iconic sights in Lower Slaughter. · Copse Hill Road — A narrow lane lined with stunning golden stone architecture. · St Mary’s Church — An ancient church set on slightly higher ground overlooking the village. · The path to Upper Slaughter — A scenic 1-mile walk that is absolutely perfect for a stroll. 🌳 🚶‍♀️ Recommended Trip If you have the time, don't stop at Lower Slaughter. Take the gentle 1-mile walk to Upper Slaughter along the River Eye. It’s an easy 25-minute trek through lush meadows and stunning countryside. 🚆 Getting There The nearest train station is Moreton-in-Marsh, from which you can take a bus or taxi to the Slaughters. Alternatively, a more scenic option is to walk from Bourton-on-the-Water, which is about 1.5 miles away. 🌿 💷 Admission There is no fee to explore the village or walk along the River Eye. However, specific attractions like the Old Mill may have entry fees and varying opening hours, so it's best to check before you visit. 📸 My Favorite Spot During the early morning or late evening, walk along the river to capture the stone houses reflecting in the water. The atmosphere is much softer and more natural than during the midday rush. A Friendly Reminder — Lower Slaughter is a living village with year-round residents. Many of these beautiful houses are private homes, so please be respectful, keep noise to a minimum, and do not enter private property. 🤍 There are no major landmarks, no crowded shopping streets, and no reason to rush. Here, it’s just the sound of the water, the historic stone walls, and winding lanes that make you want to keep walking forever. 🌿

A charming little village where a river flows through the heart of it. 🌿🏡 To experience the quintessential English village charm, look no further than Bourton-on-the-Water in the Cotswolds. 🤍 With the River Windrush meandering through its center and low stone bridges arching over the water, it's easy to see why this spot is considered one of the most picturesque locations in the region. You could easily spend an entire day strolling along the riverbanks, hopping into cozy cafes for tea, or exploring the quaint local shops. ☕️🌿 ✨ Highlights: · Riverside — The perfect spot for a stroll and iconic photos. · The Model Village — A fascinating 1:9 scale replica of the village. · Cotswold Motoring Museum — A treasure trove of vintage cars and memorabilia. · Birdland Park & Gardens — A beautiful space to learn about various birds. · You can also follow the rural paths to visit Lower Slaughter and Upper Slaughter. 🚆 Traveling without a car: Take the train to Moreton-in-Marsh, then catch the Pulhams 801 bus to Bourton-on-the-Water (approx. 30 mins). Integrated train+bus tickets are now available for this route. 🚌 (Cotswolds) 💷 Cost: Exploring the village and riverside is free. Attractions like The Model Village or Birdland require separate admission fees. 📸 Favorite Photo Angle: Try shooting from the riverbank level. Capturing the stone bridges, Cotswold houses, and their reflections in the water creates a perfectly "English" frame. 🇬🇧 🍂 Best time to visit: Bourton-on-the-Water is beautiful year-round, but it gets quite busy on weekends and sunny days. For a more peaceful vibe, I recommend visiting on a weekday morning or staying overnight to enjoy the village after the crowds have left—it truly feels like a different place. 🌙✨ (Cotswolds) This village isn't just beautiful; it has a special way of making you want to slow down... and just let the day pass by without any rush. 🤍
