🦒 Kyushu Natural Animal Park (African Safari|Kyushu Natural Animal Park) On the second-to-last day of the trip, we set off early from the hotel to visit Kyushu Natural Animal Park. The weather was fantastic that day, with blue skies and white clouds, making the entire trip feel especially relaxing. Our family of four chose to drive ourselves into the park, which is truly the most convenient option for families with kids. If you opt for the self-driving mode to explore the animal area, the whole experience takes about 60–90 minutes, allowing you to leisurely observe lions, giraffes, zebras, and other large animals up close. The kids were thrilled throughout the visit. 📌 Friendly Reminder 🔔 During the self-driving tour, you cannot open car windows or feed the animals yourself. The safety rules are quite strict. If you want to experience feeding the animals, make sure to choose the Jungle Bus, led by staff members. [Hotel AZ Ajimu] Although this is a business hotel, it was formerly a tourist hotel, so the rooms are relatively spacious and comfortable. ✨ The building itself is a little dated, but it was well-maintained and I didn't experience any inconveniences during my stay. The surrounding area is rich in nature, dotted with wineries and campgrounds, and there are few tourist facilities or convenience stores within walking distance. On this self-drive trip, we traveled from Fukuoka to Yufuin, enjoying the beautiful natural scenery along the way. The roads were not crowded, making the drive very comfortable. However, traveling with children can be challenging due to the long distances, so it's best to plan a stop at an attraction to stretch and take a break. That's why we included a visit to the Kuju Natural Zoological Park midway. The zoo is easy to find, and the animals are mostly free-roaming in their natural habitats, not confined to cages. The best way to tour is by vehicle. You can either take the park's sightseeing bus to view and feed the animals or drive your own car through the park, but you must keep the windows closed. We chose the latter, so we'll have to wait until next time to see the lions and tigers up close. The park wasn't too crowded when we visited, so even with self-driving, there was no traffic congestion. After seeing the savannah animals, you can also visit the indoor salon to pet dogs or cats, and for an additional fee, feed the ponies. These activities are separate from the car tour but offer a full experience, and the kids had a lot of fun. Petting the cats is not highly recommended, as they were mostly sleeping, and we didn't want to disturb them; it's better to just watch from a distance. 📝 My Thoughts Oita Prefecture is filled with iconic Japanese shrines, hot spring resorts, and beautiful nature. This time, I enjoyed a classic Oita itinerary, visiting the historic Usa Jingu Shrine, the steam-filled city of Beppu, and the soothing hot spring town of Yufuin. ⛩️ Usa Jingu Shrine The head shrine of approximately 40,000 Hachiman shrines across Japan. Its vast grounds are enveloped in a solemn atmosphere, and just walking down the approach to the main hall brings a sense of peace. It’s also famous for its unique worship etiquette: "two bows, four claps, one bow." The designated National Treasure main hall and the beautiful vermilion pavilions are spectacular. It’s a must-visit spiritual power spot when traveling to Oita. ♨️ Beppu Onsen A hot spring city boasting the largest number of hot spring sources and the highest yield of hot spring water in Japan. Plumes of steam rising throughout the city create a landscape unique to Beppu. On the "Jigoku Meguri" (Hell Tour), you can see incredibly unique hot springs like the Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) and Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell), while enjoying hot spring-boiled eggs and "Jigoku-mushi" (hell-steamed) delicacies. Soaking in the hot springs to soothe the fatigue of the trip was an extraordinary experience. 🌿 Yufuin A highly popular hot spring resort that is perfect for a leisurely stroll.
