One of the things I love most about exploring Malta is discovering the details that make its streets so unique — and the traditional Maltese balcony is definitely one of them. Known locally as the gallarija, these colourful enclosed wooden balconies are a beautiful part of Malta’s architectural identity. You’ll find them adorning historic buildings across Valletta, Mdina, the Three Cities, and many other towns. Each balcony seems to have its own character, with different colours, shapes and decorative details. They add so much charm to the limestone streets and are a wonderful reminder of Malta’s rich history and cultural heritage. #bucketlistdestinations Malta looked small enough on the map that I wondered how much variety it could really offer. The answer was: a lot. Valletta immediately gave me the historic side I wanted, with massive fortifications, narrow streets and views across the Grand Harbour. Then places like Mdina felt completely different again, especially inside the old stone walls. But Malta's coastline was what pushed it into bucket-list territory for me. The combination of golden limestone, cliffs and intensely blue Mediterranean water creates views that look almost unreal in bright sunlight. And because the island is compact, completely different places never feel impossibly far apart. That's what surprised me most. Malta isn't somewhere I'd visit for one famous landmark. I'd go because history, old cities, swimming spots and dramatic coastal scenery all fit into one relatively small destination. For me, that's a very good reason to put an entire country on the bucket list. The capital of Malta is really one of Europes unknown gems. It is nestled between Tunisia and Sicily in the midlle of the Mediterranean sea. With a perpetual sunny and warm climate it is pleasant to visit anytime of the year, although July and August can be hot and busy. There are lots of fantastic things to see, I recommend starting with St.Johns Cathedral and it's massive plaza. Across the street is the Upper Barrrakka Gardens and the Saluting Battery. Here it is possible to watch and hear the cannons firing out over the Grand Harbor. It is done most days at noon and again at four PM. The CBD proper is full of cafes, restaurants, artisans shops, pottery, clothing found throughout alley ways that lead to secluded plazas. It really is great to explore and experience the city slowly. Walking around the city is not a problem and there are ferries to Vallettas neighborhoods or a super public bus network. I do not recommend renting a car, the parking on Malta is terrible. Just taking the bus or a cab will make the holiday simpler. I can recommend, The Gomerino Hotel it is perfectly located, the staff is super helpful and the rooms are gorgeous! From the outside, St. John’s Co-Cathedral looks surprisingly simple. Step inside, and it becomes one of the most spectacular churches in Malta. Almost every surface is decorated - gilded walls, elaborate chapels, painted ceilings and an extraordinary marble floor covered with richly designed tombstones of the Knights of St. John. It’s the kind of interior where you keep discovering new details everywhere you look. But there’s another major reason to visit: Caravaggio. The cathedral houses The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, his largest painting and the only known work he ever signed. You can also see Saint Jerome Writing nearby. Even if you’re not particularly interested in churches, this place is worth entering for the combination of architecture, history and art. Malta is such a beautiful country! It is just two small islands Malta and Gozo. Valletta the capital city is hundreds of years old and officially became the capital in 1571, so it is kinda old! The rocky islands are located south of Sicily and east of Tunisia in the Mediterranean Sea. One of the most famous and gorgeous hikes is on the southern tip of Malta. It starts just outside of the quaint town of Zurrieq. It begins by hiking into and through Wied Babu (Gorge) and along the southern coast to the Blue Grotto (named because of the massive cathedral like caves and the seas color), then continue past Wied Zurrieq and along the jagged limestone cliffs to Torri tal Hamrija (an old lighthouse). The last section of the trail follows above and beside the sea until Ghar Lapsi and the large parking lot for the TarRita restaurant. Had a traditional local lunch and decided to be brave. Tried horse liver and rabbit. Honestly? Not my usual cup of tea, but actually not that bad! Finished the day exploring the charming streets of Rabat and grabbed a fresh, healthy salad dinner at Eeetwell in Sliema. Day 2: Historic Cannons & The Ultimate Ramen Explored *Valletta*, walked past St. John’s Co-Cathedral, and made it to the *Saluting Battery*. When the noon cannon fired, it absolutely shocked everyone! After, we took a *traditional boat* over to the Three Cities, had a quick walk around Birgu, and totally *chilled out under the shade* at a restaurant in Bormla.
