Wanzai travel guide and discussion

Just returned from a small town in Yichun, Jiangxi Province, and I’m absolutely impressed! The whole town has a slow-paced atmosphere, the locals are incredibly charming, and the surrounding nature is raw and stunning. What makes this place special: Authentic ancient city + traditional ancient villages with stories, famous historical figures, mountain and water views. Local cuisine with unique flavors, fewer crowds, and plenty of open spaces for photography. This might be the most low-key city in Jiangxi, but it’s so beautiful that I almost don’t want to share it with anyone. 📅 4-Day 3-Night Itinerary ✅ Day 1 — Wanzai Ancient City ➜ Wentang Ancient Well 🔹 Wanzai Ancient City(万载古城) Gan-style ancient city known as the "Hometown of Fireworks & Lilies." It boasts cultural heritage like "Dragon Meat Tea" and is perfect for photography. 🔹 Wentang Ancient Well(温汤古井) – Over 800 years old – Warm steam rises from the surface year-round – Nicknamed "Millennium Hot Spring Temple" – Locals often bring buckets to fetch water and relax by soaking their feet near the pavilion. ✅ Day 2 — Qixing Ridge Skiing(七星岭滑雪场) A ski resort in Jiangxi where you don’t have to travel far to Changbai Mountain to enjoy skiing! ✅ Day 3 — Mingyue Mountain ➜ Mingyue Thousand Years 🔹 Mingyue Mountain(明月山) Features 12 peaks reaching 1,200 meters, deep valleys, and unique waterfalls. Moon Lake resembles a heavenly pool. Qingyun Staircase looks like a giant dragon winding its way. Icefall resembles a frozen river cascading down the mountain, akin to the "Milky Way" descending. 🔹 Mingyue Thousand Years Sentiment(明月千古情) A beautiful cultural-themed street with a show called "Millennium Mingyue," giving a feeling of traveling back in time. ✅ Day 4 — Yangshan Chan Temple ➜ Nanra Ancient Village 🔹 Yangshan Chan Temple(杨山禅寺) – Over 1,000 years old – Built in terraced layers following the land’s contours. 🔹 Nanra Ancient Village(南阮古村) – Ancient village – Features an 800-year-old bridge – A thousand-year-old ginkgo tree – Traditional wooden houses, smoky kitchen fires, and ancient stone staircases – Offers a rural Chinese vibe with dried goods, smoked meat, and free-range chickens wandering around. 🌶️ Food Highlights Yichun cuisine tends to be spicy, such as Wanzai Red Pork, Fengcheng Frozen Rice, Yifeng Pork, Tonggu Braised Pine Pork, and more.

Xiangweishizu (Gulou Branch) is located in the Gulou area of Yichun. It is a popular, authentic home-style restaurant that has been a local favorite for quite some time, specializing in flavorful Hunan cuisine. Many Yichun locals prioritize this spot for family gatherings. If you are looking to host a lively and warm birthday banquet, this place is definitely worth adding to your shortlist. [Signature Dishes] During this gathering with friends, we specifically ordered a few signature dishes. They were all stir-fried over high heat and served piping hot. The pounded chili with century egg had a smoky, charred aroma; the chilies were pounded until soft and fully blended with the century egg, creating a mild, savory, and spicy flavor that really whets the appetite when eaten with rice. The stir-fried minced meat with local preserved greens is a unique flavor from western Jiangxi; the preserved greens are naturally refreshing and savory, while the minced meat is stir-fried until dry and not greasy—it's incredibly appetizing. The chicken giblets were cooked to perfection, with no gamey taste at all; the texture was crisp and tender, and the fresh, spicy flavor was a hit with friends who love bold Hunan cuisine. The Wanzai minced meat had the perfect ratio of fat to lean meat, and the spicy, savory sauce was rich—the more you eat it with rice, the better it tastes. Every dish came in a very generous portion. [Restaurant Environment] The overall style is simple and down-to-earth, without any overly complex or luxurious decor. The main dining hall is spacious and airy, and there are also private rooms available. The private rooms are large enough to accommodate a table of friends and family, and the table and chair layout is spacious, so gatherings won't feel crowded. It's a great spot for a birthday banquet, offering a relaxed and lively atmosphere without feeling stiff. [Restaurant Service] The staff is very responsive, and the food is served at a steady pace, so you won't be waiting too long. They are proactive about refilling tea and changing bone plates, and if you need anything, they arrive quickly when called. Their attitude is friendly without being overly intrusive, making for a very comfortable dining experience. [Average Cost] The average cost is around CNY 50 per person. The portions are on the larger side, offering great value for money. It's easy to manage your budget for group gatherings or small birthday banquets. [Tips] The restaurant is right next to the Yichun Gulou (Drum Tower), so you can take a stroll through the ancient street to walk off your meal. It gets very busy during meal times, so if you plan to host a birthday banquet here, be sure to call and reserve a private room in advance. The portions are generous, so try not to order too much at once to avoid waste. You can communicate with the staff in advance to adjust the spice level, so friends and family who don't eat spicy food can also dine with peace of mind. Xiangweishizu (Gulou Branch)

Yichun in October–November is crisp and cool, with perfect temperatures. It's neither too cold nor too hot—a season tailor-made for travel🍂. Having been to Yichun several times, I really can't help but share some heartfelt advice! This severely underrated small city in western Jiangxi has the sea of clouds at Mingyue Mountain, the thousand-year-old selenium-rich hot springs in Wentang Town, the old streets of Yuanzhou Ancient City, and endless spicy delicacies hidden away🌶️. Today, I'm spilling all my best-kept secrets. Girls, just follow this guide and don't make the mistakes I made back then! 🚗 [Transportation and Accommodation] Take my advice! Avoid unnecessary detours 🚄 Book your high-speed train to "Yichun Station"! It's about 1 hour from Nanchang and 1.5 hours from Changsha, and you're in the city center as soon as you exit. Don't waste time waiting for taxis or following touts outside the station. Take Bus 115 for a direct, cost-effective ride to Wentang Town. A taxi to Wentang Town costs about 50–70 yuan and takes around 40 minutes. 🏠 I highly recommend staying in [Wentang Town]! You can soak in hot springs right outside your door, walk to Gujingquan Street, and head back to your room to lie down whenever you're full—it's amazing. Hot spring guesthouses cost about 120 yuan/night per person, and some room types even have private soaking pools, which is much more cost-effective than public hot spring pools. If you prefer to explore the city center, chain hotels in the Gulou commercial area are 100–150 yuan/night and offer convenient dining options. ⚠️ Avoid this trap: Don't trust guesthouses that claim to be "a 10-minute walk to the scenic area." In reality, you might end up hiking uphill for half an hour and getting exhausted. Accommodations in Wentang Town are in high demand on weekends, so be sure to book in advance; you might not find a room if you just show up. 🗺️ [Comprehensive Itinerary] No "special forces" style travel here, just pure comfort Day 1: Mingyue Mountain > Soak in Wentang Town hot springs > Night tour of Gujingquan Street Head straight to Mingyue Mountain in the morning. Admission is 95 yuan, or 90 yuan if booked online one day in advance. I highly recommend buying the 150-yuan round-trip cable car ticket; hiking the whole way involves so many stairs you'll question your life choices. The lazy, energy-saving route: Visitor Center > Sightseeing Bus > Cable Car up the mountain > Qingyun Plank Road (a 3,100-meter suspended walkway where the sea of clouds makes you feel like you're walking on air) > Xingyue Cave > Moon Lake > Cable Car down. Don't miss the Yungu Waterfall, which has a drop of 119 meters and is misty and refreshing during the wet season. In the afternoon, go to Wentang Town to soak in the selenium-rich hot springs! The water temperature is a constant 68–72℃. There are free foot-soaking areas along the street, and you'll see elderly locals carrying buckets to the ancient well to get water for foot baths—it's full of local charm. In the evening, stroll through Gujingquan Street, where rows of lanterns and clusters of barbecue and snack stalls create a gentle, lively atmosphere without being too noisy. Day 2: Yuanzhou Ancient City city walk > Huacheng Zen Temple > Mingyue Eternal Love show Spend the morning exploring Yuanzhou Ancient City, a 2,200-year-old city in western Jiangxi. The Qiaolou (Drum Tower) is the oldest existing local astronomical observatory in China; note that it's closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. The old alleys in the ancient city are narrow, so I recommend walking or riding a shared bike—don't drive inside. In the afternoon, head to Huacheng Zen Temple; it's easy to drive to within the city. In the evening, watch the "Mingyue Eternal Love" show. Tickets start at 138 yuan. The stage design is mind-blowing, and 90 minutes just isn't enough. I recommend choosing the 2:30 PM show so you can still explore the park and take photos afterward. Day 3: Nanre Ancient Village > Wanzai Ancient City > Return trip In the morning, visit Nanre Ancient Village—it's free! With babbling brooks and ancient trees, it's barely commercialized and perfect for a light hike to get some fresh air. There are artistic, fresh-style cafes by the creek in the village. If you wear Hanfu or a new Chinese-style dress for photos, you can easily get stunning traditional-style shots. In the afternoon, go to Wanzai Ancient City to drink tea from large bowls and experience the intangible cultural heritage of Xiabu (grass cloth) making. There's a fireworks show at 8:00 PM, which you can watch from outside the ancient city without needing to buy an expensive ticket. 🍜 [Food Recommendations] Don't just focus on the "internet-famous" shops! 🥩 Cihua Chicken: Local Yuanzhou hemp chicken with pickled peppers and rice vinegar. It's fresh, spicy, and flavorful—a city-level intangible cultural heritage dish and a perfect companion for rice. 🍜 Yichun Stir-fried Rice Noodles: The soul of a local breakfast! Made from fermented late-harvest rice, these dried noodles are stir-fried over high heat for that perfect "wok hei" (breath of the wok). They cost just a few yuan a bowl. Small street-side shops in the old town are much more authentic than those in the scenic areas; a bowl costs 10 yuan and is full of flavor. 🍰 Wentang Steamed Cake: Steamed with selenium-rich spring water, it's sweet, soft, and fluffy with black sesame. You can buy it everywhere on Gujingquan Street. 🥟 Taro Dumplings: The wrapper isn't made of flour but of local fresh taro, steamed, mashed, and kneaded with starch. They are soft, chewy, and smooth, with the natural sweetness of taro. 🌶️ Fried Spicy Snacks: A must-order for late-night snacks! A secret spicy list for Yichun locals, found everywhere from street stalls to family dinner tables. You won't be able to stop eating them. Other must-eats: Selenium-rich tofu, Tonggu Baoyuan (steamed dumplings), lotus root with sweet bean skin, and century eggs. ⚠️ Avoid this trap: Don't eat local specialties in the scenic areas! Prices there can be double. Wentang Steamed Cake on the old street of Wentang Town is 5 yuan per serving, and you can get Binjiang stir-fried beef at street-side shops for about 30 yuan per person. The shops locals go to are in the alleys near Huangnitang, the Shiyunhui (10th Games) area, and the Telecom Building—just go for it. 📸 [Great Photo Spots] Guaranteed to get questions on your social media 1. Qingyun Plank Road: When the sea of clouds is rolling, it feels like walking on air. Every shot is a masterpiece. 2. Moon Lake: When there's no wind, the lake reflects the mountains and forests like an emerald embedded in the mountaintop. 3. Yichun Terrace Red Wall: Climb up for a panoramic view of the city—a perfect spot for traditional-style photos. 4. South Gate Section of the Ancient City Wall: 600-year-old camphor trees wrap around the wall—a great spot for Hanfu silhouettes. 5. Gujingquan Street Night View: Lanterns reflected in the stream create a perfect atmosphere. 6. Millennium Ginkgo Trees in Nanre Ancient Village: Two 1,500-year-old ginkgo trees. Wear Hanfu or a new Chinese-style dress for photos to capture the perfect vibe. 7. Yangshan Qiyin Zen Temple: In autumn, ginkgo leaves flutter down, covering the stone paths of the ancient temple in gold. 8. Dawn Redwoods in Beihu Park: Orange-yellow dawn redwoods reflected on the emerald green lake—you can just close your eyes and snap away to get stunning images. 💥 [Avoid These Traps] Every word is hard-earned advice—a must-read! 1. The temperature difference on the mountain in October–November is huge. The summit is 5–8℃ cooler than the base, so bring a light jacket! It's cool in the mountains in the morning and evening; use sun protection during the day and keep warm in the evening. 2. Wear non-slip sneakers the whole time! The mountain paths are slippery and have many stairs; do not wear sandals or flip-flops. 3. Don't go exploring undeveloped mountain areas! The official scenic areas are more than enough to explore. Safety first. 4. Get the Yichun Culture and Tourism Card in advance; it covers admission to scenic areas like Mingyue Mountain. It pays for itself after just two visits. 5. The museum is free and requires no reservation; just swipe your ID card to enter. 6. Don't buy local specialties in the scenic areas. Go to local wet markets or the morning market at the Trade City; they are half the price and more authentic. 7. Limit your hot spring soak to 15–20 minutes. Don't overdo it, or you'll get dizzy. 8. The folk street inside the Mingyue Eternal Love scenic area is a bit commercialized. Don't buy the "local snacks" included in the package—they are expensive and not good. Turn right when you exit, and the night market is much better. Yichun is truly a city meant for slowing down and exploring at your own pace. Don't just travel to check things off a list. Find a weekend, invite your best friend or partner, go see the sea of clouds at Mingyue Mountain, soak in the hot springs in Wentang Town, eat a bowl of stir-fried rice noodles in the old alleys, and experience the slow-paced life of the "City of the Moon."

Jiangxi cuisine is generally spicy! If you can't handle spice, remember to say "mildly spicy, less chili" when ordering, or you'll be sweating from the heat. 2. There is a large temperature difference between day and night after the start of autumn. It's cooler in the mountains (Mount Mingyue, Mount Longhu), so bring a light jacket. 3. Many ancient villages and old streets are free, but some paid attractions are cheaper if you buy tickets online in advance. 4. Try to eat in the city center. Restaurant prices in scenic areas are higher. Duck into small shops in residential areas for authentic and cheaper food. 5. The four cities are quite far apart. You don't have to visit them all at once. You can pick 1–2 small cities to relax and take it slow without rushing your itinerary. No need to squeeze into popular tourist spots, no sky-high prices. Jiangxi in autumn is gentle. Find a small city to stay for two or three days, slurp a bowl of local rice noodles in the morning, stroll through old streets and enjoy the scenery in the afternoon, and eat Jiangxi cuisine while feeling the evening breeze. This kind of relaxation is truly rare. For those who want a low-cost, slow-paced trip, these small cities in Jiangxi are worth a visit🥰

The 6th Wanzai Firecracker Culture Festival

Just back from Yichun | I really don't recommend visiting in October or November; it's just too easy to fall into tourist traps 😭 Does anyone get it? I planned a fall/winter trip to Yichun specifically for Mingyue Mountain and the selenium-rich hot springs. After the trip, I realized that visiting in October–November really isn't as wonderful as imagined. If you're planning to come, you must read this guide to avoid pitfalls! Many people see beautiful photos of the sea of clouds and the Qingyun Plank Road at Mingyue Mountain online and excitedly book their tickets—I was one of them. Let's start with Mingyue Mountain, which everyone looks forward to most. As Yichun's top attraction, the scenery on the mountain in October and November is a huge letdown. I expected to encounter mountains covered in red leaves, but in reality, most of the forest is still green. There are only a few scattered red leaves, and it's hard to see large areas of brilliant autumn scenery. The temperature on the mountain is much lower than in the city, and it's very windy. Even if you wear long sleeves at the base, you'll need a thick jacket at the summit. Once it gets cloudy and foggy, the distant mountain views are completely covered by white mist, and photos on the Qingyun Plank Road look gray and dull—nothing like the ethereal, magical feeling you see online. Furthermore, the Mingyue Mountain scenic area is very far from downtown Yichun. Public transportation is inconvenient, with few departures and long travel times. If you aren't driving yourself, getting around is a huge hassle. Hiking the mountain is physically demanding, and queuing for the cable car is the norm, so your legs will be sore by the end of the trip. When you head down to Wentang Town to soak in the selenium-rich hot springs, keep in mind that October–November is peak season. Prices for homestays and hotels in town skyrocket, often doubling. Many shops along the street will try to sell you various selenium-related local products, and it's easy to make impulsive purchases and fall into a trap. If you're only coming for the hot springs, there are many other similar destinations to choose from; there's no need to make a special trip to Yichun. Let's talk about the "Mingyue Eternal Love" show. The stage design for the main performance is truly stunning—I can't deny that—but most of the park's appeal is concentrated in that one show. Aside from the performance, there isn't much to explore in the area, and it's quite quiet during the day. If you visit during holidays, tickets for the show are in high demand, and you need to book well in advance to get good seats, so it's not very cost-effective. Wanzai Ancient City is another spot people add to their lists. The Gan-style ancestral hall complex is quite unique, the ancient town area is free to enter, and there's a fireworks show on Saturdays, which creates a nice atmosphere at night. However, it's also not close to the city center, and you'll need to spend half a day traveling there. The ancient town is becoming increasingly commercialized, with stalls selling snacks and souvenirs everywhere, and you have to buy extra tickets for the core ancestral hall exhibits. If you're just passing by, it's fine, but making a special trip there isn't really worth it. Zhuojiang Cave is an alternative that doesn't require climbing. You can take a boat to see the stalactites, and the temperature inside the cave is constant, unaffected by the weather outside. However, the cave scenery is quite monotonous, and the visit ends in about an hour. The facilities outside the scenic area are simple, and there aren't many places to stop and take photos, so it can only serve as a minor side attraction in your itinerary. My biggest takeaway from the whole trip: Yichun's attractions are very scattered, the distances between them are long, and connecting them into an itinerary is very time-consuming. There's not much to see in the city center, and the core of the trip is basically in the surrounding counties, which makes it highly dependent on driving yourself. If you don't have a car, you'll spend a lot of time commuting, which makes the trip exhausting. ✅ Some honest advice for friends planning to visit 1. If you want to see autumn red leaves and seas of clouds in October or November, prioritize other destinations; Yichun's autumn scenery won't meet your expectations. 2. If you want to soak in the hot springs, try to avoid weekends, compare prices for homestays in advance, and don't just buy local products pushed by street vendors. 3. If you aren't driving yourself, think carefully before choosing this destination, as public transportation will drain most of your enthusiasm for the trip. 4. If you go up Mingyue Mountain, be sure to bring a thick jacket. The weather in the mountains is changeable, so have rain gear ready. Of course, I'm not saying Yichun is completely bad. It's more suitable for a slow-paced, relaxing vacation—hiking, soaking in hot springs, and unwinding. But if you're expecting stunning autumn scenery or a short trip to check off sightseeing spots, I really don't recommend visiting in October–November. It's very easy to end up disappointed.

Even if it's hot during the day on National Day, be sure to bring a light jacket🧥. · For those with average stamina, we recommend taking the cable car up and hiking down to see the waterfall. Some homestays have private hot springs in the rooms. Soaking after hiking is the perfect way to relax. 💡Avoid pitfalls · Don't soak in the hot springs on an empty stomach. Take it slow and don't soak for more than 15 minutes at a time to avoid dizziness. · Don't trust low-priced hot spring offers from people soliciting on the street; prioritize legitimate businesses. · Accommodation in town is limited during National Day, so be sure to book in advance. 📍Zhuojiang Cave 💰Ticket: About CNY 70–80 (includes boat ride), half price for students ⏰Duration: 2 hours An underrated underground secret. A natural karst cave with a constant temperature of 18℃ inside. While it's hot outside during National Day, the cave is cool and comfortable—a perfect place to escape the heat. ✅Highlights Walk into Bailong Cave and take a boat through the underground river. The stalactites, stalagmites, and stone pillars formed over millions of years come in all shapes and sizes. Under the lights, they look like "Giant Python Coming Down the Mountain" or "Three Gorges Scenery," as if you've stumbled into an underground dragon palace. The cave tour involves both boating and walking, so it's not tiring and is very family-friendly. It's great for taking photos with a fantasy vibe. 💡Tips · The lighting inside the cave is dim, and the ground is slippery, so watch your step. · The temperature inside is low, so bring a light jacket. · The scenic area is not far from the city, making it suitable for a half-day trip. 📍Wanzai Ancient City 💰Street area is free, some exhibition halls require a combined ticket ⏰Duration: 2–3 hours If you love cultural heritage and ancient architecture, you must come here! Looking for a quiet, safe, affordable, authentic, and non-commercial small town, I chose Wanzai, Yichun. The ancient city is free to enter. There's no street full of cheap trinkets, just locals soaking up the sun and 3-yuan big-bowl tea. And what gave me the confidence to just pack up and go solo was this hotel—"Moshang Yaju." 🏨 Moshang Yaju Hotel It's a 1-hour drive from Yichun Station, and there's a bus stop (Route 6) right in front of the hotel, so it's fine even if you don't drive. When traveling solo, safety and hygiene are my top priorities: ▫ The room has a separate wet and dry area, and the Laifen hair dryer is a nice touch. ▫ Whole-house smart voice control, so no fumbling for switches in the dark. ▫ Bedding is Carnation linens + Sleemon mattress, which made for a very restful sleep. ▫ The hotel has a laundry room, so I didn't have to worry about running out of clean clothes during my two-day stay. During the day, I wandered the ancient city and watched the Kaikou Nuo performance; at night, I brewed a cup of tea by the hotel window and wrote in my diary. No need to go out for breakfast; the hotel buffet has local minced meat rice noodles and the same tea snacks as the big-bowl tea shop. 📌 Tips: The hotel front desk is very welcoming; feel free to ask if you have any questions while traveling solo. Go to the ancient city in the evening to photograph the silhouettes of the horse-head walls; the lighting is stunning. Remember to try the Xiabu weaving; the intangible cultural heritage instructor is very patient. "One person, one ancient city, one good hotel"—this is probably the ideal weekend getaway.

Yichun really cured my burnout—the 5A-rated Mingyue Mountain with its 22℃ natural air conditioning, the world-rare selenium-rich hot springs, the tear-jerking spicy Cihua chicken, and bowls of stir-fried rice noodles for just a few CNY. I didn't want to leave after 3 days. I just got back from Yichun, so here is a stress-free, no-trap itinerary you can copy directly👇 🚗 Transportation Guide (All the essentials) High-speed rail goes directly to Yichun Station. It's about 40 minutes from Nanchang and 1.5 hours from Changsha. After exiting the station, take bus 115/118 directly to Wentang Town + the entrance of Mingyue Mountain Scenic Area for just a few CNY—super budget-friendly. Don't trust the unlicensed taxis at the station; they'll quote you sky-high prices. If driving, navigate to "Mingyue Mountain Tourist Center" or "Wentang Town Gujing Park". Take the Yichun exit on the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway. Parking is 10 CNY/day. 🏨 Where to Stay I highly recommend staying in Wentang Town! It's close to the scenic area, so you can soak in the hot springs anytime without running back and forth to the city. Hotels in town come standard with private hot spring bathtubs, with 24-hour access to selenium-rich spring water from the ancient well. If you want a private soak, choose a homestay with a hot spring pool. Be sure to book in advance during peak season! 🗺️ 3-Day Relaxed Itinerary (Just copy this) Day 1: Full day at Mingyue Mountain · 22℃ natural air conditioning Get there when it opens at 7:30 AM! Admission to Mingyue Mountain is 95 CNY/person. You must buy the round-trip cable car ticket for 150 CNY! Hiking up thousands of steps will kill your legs. Route: Cable car up → Qingyun Plank Road (3,100-meter cliffside path with rolling sea of clouds—great for photos) → Xingyue Cave (a natural cave that feels like a "natural AC room") → Moon Lake (alpine lake at 1,530 meters, clear as jade) → Get off at the middle cable car station → Walk to see Yungu Waterfall (119-meter "No. 1 High Waterfall in Jiangnan"). The whole trip takes about 4 hours. Stay in Wentang Town at night and soak in the selenium-rich hot springs. The water is 68–72℃ year-round and rich in selenium, leaving your skin feeling incredibly smooth. 🎓 Student Perks: 2026 middle and high school graduates can get free admission to Mingyue Mountain with their exam admission ticket; students from all over the country can also get free admission with a student ID. This policy is valid until the end of 2026. The student duo ticket (admission + round-trip cable car) is only 150 CNY. Day 2: Slow life in Wentang Town → Fireworks at Wanzai Ancient City Morning: Soak your feet by the Wentang Ancient Well—in the town center at Yupan Square, foot soaking in a wooden bucket is 20 CNY/person. Stroll through Wentang Old Street and eat stir-fried rice noodles and selenium spring tofu. Evening: Go to Wanzai Ancient City (free!). The Gan-style ancestral halls are perfect for photos. There is a free intangible cultural heritage fireworks show every Saturday at 8:00 PM! The immersive fireworks performance "Love of Fireworks" combines fireworks, lights, and lasers—it's incredibly romantic. Stay in Wanzai or return to Wentang Town. Day 3: Nanre Ancient Village → Yangshan Qiyin Temple → Relaxed return trip Morning: Go to Nanre Ancient Village (free!)—a niche ancient village hidden at the foot of Mingyue Mountain, surrounded by streams and bamboo forests. It's super comfortable for escaping the summer heat. The farmhouses in the village serve freshly picked free-range chicken, bamboo shoots, and wild vegetables. On the way, visit Yangshan Qiyin Temple (free!)—a thousand-year-old temple deep in the mountains, one of the ancestral sites of Zen Buddhism, with a quiet and serene environment. Return home at a leisurely pace in the afternoon. 🍜 Food Recommendations (Eat until you have to hold the wall to walk out) Yichun Stir-fried Rice Noodles—the soul of Yichun breakfast and late-night snacks! Stir-fried over high heat, chewy and full of "wok hei". A big bowl in Wentang Old Street costs just a few CNY. Cihua Chicken—a representative of Western Jiangxi spicy cuisine! Stir-fried with local millet chili and dried chili, it's fresh, spicy, and explosive. If you can't handle spice, be sure to ask for mild! Wentang Steamed Cake—a century-old intangible cultural heritage rice cake, soft, sweet, and rich in rice fragrance. Xie's Steamed Cake is a time-honored brand. Tonggu Baoyuan—a Hakka specialty snack. The taro flour skin is soft and chewy, and the meat filling is savory. Selenium-rich Salted Century Egg—the egg white is like a century egg, and the yolk is like a salted egg. A must-try for adventurous eaters. Selenium-rich spring water fish and spring water tofu are also Wentang specialties. ⚠️ Don't eat at the scenic area restaurants! They are expensive and not good. Stick to the old shops in the residential areas of Wentang Town. You can eat very well for 20–30 CNY per person. ⚠️ Travel Tips Sun protection and mosquito repellent are non-negotiable! The daily high in Yichun in August is 35℃+, and it can feel like 41℃ at noon. Don't stay outdoors between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Bring mosquito repellent; there are many bugs in the bamboo forests and near the water. Clothing: It's 5–8℃ cooler at the top of the mountain than at the bottom, so bring a light jacket. Wear non-slip sneakers or water shoes. Wear long pants and long sleeves when entering the bamboo forest to prevent insect bites. Avoid traps: Don't trust roadside unlicensed tour guides; don't hike the entire Mingyue Mountain—the dense steps will kill your legs; strictly follow the 4:30 PM cable car closing time; local specialties in the scenic area are overpriced, buy them in town; soak in the hot spring for 15–25 minutes at a time, and drink water when you get up. Yichun isn't big, but 3 days really isn't enough. Take advantage of the 22℃ summer and the free admission perks while they last—go for it! ♨️

🌟Must-Visit Attractions (with Avoidance Guide) 🌄Nature and Culture Meets Nature: Wentang Town Area 1️⃣ Mingyue Mountain Easy Way to Experience: Walk from the entrance to the middle section (the highlight! Traveling alone, the biggest fear is loneliness and unease. But this time at "Moshang Yaju" in Wanzai, from the moment I stepped in, I felt at ease💛. The front desk lady handed me a cup of hot tea and chatted with a smile, instantly removing any sense of unfamiliarity. The air conditioning was turned on in advance, so the room was warm as soon as I entered. The attention to detail really adds points✨. 🌙 Little joys for solo travelers: ▫️ I chose the Elegant·Lingkong Neon Night View Room, which has a sofa by the window. At night, watching the neon lights of this small city and listening to music while zoning out is so healing🌃 ▫️ The whole room is smart-enabled; just a voice command to turn off the lights without leaving the bed🧸 ▫️ The bathroom was spotless, the glass sparkling clean—perfect for those with cleanliness OCD👍 The hotel also has a gym and laundry room. I stayed for two days and washed all my clothes clean to take with me🧺. In the morning, I went to the Sangzi Restaurant for breakfast. Looking at the morning light outside the window, I suddenly felt that traveling alone can also be very warm. As the high-speed train enters western Jiangxi, I found the poetic slow life that urban dwellers yearn for in this city named after “spring” — misty hot springs, rolling bamboo seas, and the distant chimes of ancient temples. 🛣️Transportation Guide: 🚄Convenient external transportation. I departed from Nanchang and took a high-speed train about 40 minutes directly to Yichun Station, with a ticket price of around 50 RMB. If driving, take the Hukun Expressway to the Yichun exit, about 2.5 hours in total. Yichun also has its own airport with some domestic routes. 🚌Flexible and affordable city transportation. You can take tourist shuttle buses between attractions, such as Bus 113 towards Mingyue Mountain (fare 2 RMB). Renting a car is a great choice for exploring off-the-beaten-path spots, costing about 150 RMB per day. Shared electric scooters are well-covered in the city, about 2 RMB for 15 minutes. 🖼️Core Attractions Travel Guide: 1️⃣ Mingyue Mountain: Walking Among Clouds and Hot Spring Healing Transportation: Take Bus 113 directly from Yichun Station, about 40 minutes. For driving, navigate to “Mingyue Mountain Scenic Area,” parking costs 10 RMB/day. Recommended activities: Take the cable car (one-way 80 RMB) to the summit early morning, stroll along the Qingyun plank road, watching the sea of clouds roll beneath your feet. In the afternoon, rest at an Instagram-style café by Moon Lake, then descend to Wentang Town before sunset to soak in a 68°C selenium-rich hot spring (entrance about 80 RMB). 💕Experience: Standing on the 1500-meter-high plank road, mist rises from the bamboo forest, as if walking in a fairyland. At night, soaking in the hot spring, the silky water washes over your skin, instantly melting away travel fatigue. 2️⃣ Nanre Ancient Village: Millennium Ginkgo and Zen Moments Transportation: About 100 RMB for a charter from downtown, 40 minutes drive. Or take a bus to Hongjiang Town, then transfer to local transport. Recommended activities: Listen to the stream flowing under the thousand-year-old ginkgo tree, visit Yangshan Qiyin Zen Temple to feel Zen culture. On weekends, experience intangible cultural heritage activities like pounding glutinous rice cakes and painting oil-paper umbrellas. Experience: Golden ginkgo leaves scatter over the bluestone paths, villagers wash clothes by the stream, and time slows down here. 3️⃣ Sanzhaolun National Forest Park: Forest Oxygen and Rafting Adventure Transportation: Take a shuttle bus from Yichun Bus Station to Jing’an County (about 1.5 hours), then transfer to local vehicles; self-driving is highly recommended. Recommended activities: Morning rafting at Huxiao Gorge (128 RMB), a 6 km river winding through the bamboo sea. In the afternoon, take the forest train tour or hike to Guanyin Rock Waterfall Cluster. 💕Experience: Water splashes everywhere during rafting, laughter and screams echo in the valley; the slow-moving train through the forest feels like entering the fairy tale world of “My Neighbor Totoro.” 4️⃣ Wanzai Ancient City: Intangible Heritage Fireworks and Night Market Flavors Transportation: Take a shuttle bus from Yichun Station to Wanzai County (about 1 hour), then a 10 RMB taxi to the ancient city. Recommended activities: Visit Ming and Qing dynasty ancestral halls in the afternoon, admire the “Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix” wood carving at the Zhou Family Mansion. Stroll the night market when lanterns light up at dusk, and watch the intangible heritage iron flower performance at 8:00 PM on Saturdays. 💕Experience: Iron flowers bloom like meteor showers in the night sky, paired with a bowl of spicy Wanzai rice noodles, a feast for both eyes and taste buds. 🍜Food Recommendations: Taste the Flavors of Western Jiangxi Yichun cuisine is full of rustic mountain flavors. Must-try selenium-rich delicacies in Wentang Town include spring water tofu and selenium rice cakes, with a healthy meal costing about 50 RMB per person. Wanzai Ancient City night market offers sweet and tender Longya lily noodles and spicy stir-fried cured meat rice noodles. Don’t miss farmhouse dishes like native cured meat, ecological free-range chicken, and wild kiwi fruit. For specialties, try Jing’an Huangnian cakes or Fengxin kiwis, naturally sweet and fresh. 🏠Accommodation Recommendations: Wentang Town hot spring inns are the first choice, priced around 150-400 RMB/night, some with outdoor soaking pools and complimentary ancient well foot baths. Mingyue Mountain summit lodgings are perfect for stargazing and sea of clouds views, priced about 300-600 RMB/night, with possible sunrise views from the window. Characteristic inns in the ancient city, such as those in Wanzai Ancient City, cost about 200-400 RMB/night, offering the ambiance of green bricks and black tiles visible from the window. 🌟Practical Tips and Itinerary Suggestions The best travel seasons are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), with pleasant weather. Summer is good for escaping the heat, winter suits hot springs. 📅Three-Day Highlight Itinerary: ✅Day 1: Qingyun Plank Road and Moon Lake at Mingyue Mountain, soak in hot springs at Wentang Town in the evening. ✅Day 2: Morning rafting at Sanzhaolun, afternoon visit Nanre Ancient Village and Zen Temple. ✅Day 3: Intangible heritage experience in Wanzai Ancient City, return in the evening. ⚠️Essentials: Non-slip shoes (must for hiking), sunscreen, rain gear (mountain weather is changeable). 🌸The beauty of Yichun lies in the healing feeling of “being trapped in a cage for long, then returning to nature.” When the hot spring steam blurs your vision, when ancient ginkgo leaves brush your shoulders, this small city gently tells you: life can be slower, even slower.

In August, I wanted to find a cool, uncrowded place to catch my breath, so I packed up and headed straight to Yichun🌿. This small city in western Jiangxi is truly underrated. The city center’s summer temperatures range from 26 to 32℃, but once you enter the Mingyue Mountain forest, the temperature drops by 5 to 8℃ instantly—nature’s air conditioning confirmed💡. 🏨 accommodation tips This trip I stayed in Wentang Town and sincerely recommend you do the same. The town is surrounded by Mingyue Mountain, and most guesthouses have hot springs right on the property, so you can soak once in the morning and once at night, enjoying the hot springs freely and easily♨️. For a more budget-friendly option, local guesthouses in town are priced steadily between 130 and 180 yuan per day. They’re clean, comfortable, and well-equipped—perfect for a girls’ trip with great value. If you want a bit more comfort, choose a proper hot spring hotel, many of which are near the old street or plaza, offering convenient access, breakfast, parking, and better privacy. The guesthouse I stayed at had a private hot spring, costing just over 200 yuan per night. After soaking, my skin felt silky smooth. The selenium-rich hot springs are said to keep your skin wrinkle-free🌊. If you prefer the convenience of city dining and shopping, chain hotels near Gulou cost about 100 to 200 yuan per person. There are plenty of restaurants and snack shops downstairs, and transportation to various attractions is convenient. I usually book on Trip.com in advance to find my preferred guesthouse. During holidays, remember to book Wentang accommodations 1 to 2 weeks ahead, as availability is tight and prices rise📌. 🍜 food recommendations Yichun’s food is truly spicy—spice lovers’ paradise. If you can’t handle spice, be sure to ask for no spice in advance🌶️. Top recommendation is Yichun zha fen, made from late rice flour, chewy and smooth. Stir-fried over a wood fire with cured meat, it’s full of wok aroma and pairs perfectly with clay pot soup. Wentang steamed cakes are fermented with selenium-rich spring water, soft, glutinous, and sweet, with a rich black sesame filling. You can get 3 for 10 yuan on the street. Selenium-rich salted century eggs are also a must-try, with bouncy egg whites and runny yolks, available at local markets. There’s also Tonggu bao yuan, with taro and sweet potato flour skins, savory and soft; and Cihua chicken, sour, spicy, and fragrant, with broth so good you can drink two bowls of rice with it🍚. In Wentang old town’s streets and alleys, the steamed cakes, selenium-rich cold springs, and Shangliu pastries (open at 2 PM, don’t miss it) are all worth trying. A meal usually costs 50 to 70 yuan per person, depending on your budget. 📸 recommended attractions Mingyue Mountain must be first on the list. Tickets cost 90 yuan, students get free admission with ID, and a ticket plus round-trip cable car is 240 yuan. The Qingyun plank road hangs on the cliffside halfway up the mountain. After rain, the sea of clouds rolls like a fairyland; the Yungu waterfall cascades from a hundred-meter cliff, with mist that cools better than air conditioning💦; the mountaintop Moon Lake is shrouded in mist, and Xingyue Cave stays a constant 18℃, a natural air-conditioned room. Wentang Town at the foot of the mountain is free to enter. The town center has a thousand-year-old hot spring well with water at 68℃ year-round. Rent a wooden tub for a few yuan and soak your feet on the long corridor while chatting and relaxing with locals. Simple pleasures for just 10 yuan🌿. During summer, Mingyue Mountain hosts the "Full Moon and Starry River · Mountain Cool Season" from now until August 31, featuring flower parades, sunset folk songs, water splashing parties, and starry night music events. Tickets for the Mingyue Eternal Love show start at 138 yuan, showcasing Jiangxi culture and worth seeing. Photography lovers shouldn’t miss the Mingyue Mountain jade mine pit lake, a jade-colored lake formed from an abandoned quarry. The gray limestone contrasts with the clear water, and a wooden boardwalk extends to the lake’s edge—perfect for Instagram-worthy shots📷. If you want to add a day of culture, the Zen Capital Cultural Expo Park is free to enter, with bamboo groves and serene Buddhist chants. Wanzai Ancient City hosts the "Love of Fireworks" show every Saturday and on public holidays at 8 PM. It’s free, lasts about 30 minutes, and the Gan-style ancient ancestral halls are great for photos🎆. ⚠️ travel tips In August, Yichun occasionally has short afternoon thunderstorms. After rain, the mountain forest is shrouded in mist, creating an atmospheric vibe, but UV rays remain strong in the forest. It’s best to keep sun-protective clothing on and carry a folding umbrella for sun and rain protection☂️. Temperature differences between morning and evening in the mountains are large, so bring a light jacket for hiking. The trip mainly involves leisurely walks and light hiking, so prioritize comfortable flat shoes with good grip. Limit hot spring soaking time to avoid fatigue, drink plenty of water, and apply body lotion and face masks promptly after soaking to keep skin hydrated💧. Bring disposable bath bags, disposable towels, and slippers for hygiene and convenience. You can also bring an empty bucket to fill with natural selenium-rich spring water at free water points in town. For rafting, waterproof bags are essential. Tickets for rafting in Mingyue Mountain’s Qiyin Grand Canyon cost 89 yuan, and Sanzaolun Huxiao Gorge rafting costs 158 yuan, with a 198-meter drop for nonstop thrills💃. Transportation is convenient, with high-speed trains from Nanchang and Changsha reaching Yichun Station in half an hour. Direct trains also run from Wuhan, Hangzhou, and Guangzhou. Outside the train station, buses and ride-hailing services are available. For Mingyue Mountain, it’s best to buy tickets plus cable car packages on Trip.com in advance for peace of mind. Within the city, you can take direct shuttle buses to attractions or carpool to Mingyue Mountain to avoid transfers🚗. Overall, this trip costs about 800 yuan per person for a comfortable experience. You get mountains, forests, waterfalls, ancient temples, and hot springs all in one place. With fewer crowds, beautiful scenery, and affordable prices, Yichun is definitely the place to escape to in August✨.

The mountains unfold like a canvas before my eyes, painted in the warm amber of an autumn afternoon. The sunlight pours like melted honey, dyeing the layered forest. Wandering aimlessly, I become a casual brushstroke in this oil painting. Every slate pathway I step upon catches the moments of leisure slipping through the cracks of my life—a suppressed yearning in the fast-paced city to simply let time pass by. At this moment, that yearning transforms into the crisp, lingering rustle of dry leaves brushing against the stone beneath my feet. A few golden ginkgo leaves are wedged in the crevices of the slate, like bookmarks forgotten by time. I carefully step around them, afraid to disturb the quiet. Under the sun, the mountain ridges take on a sculptural texture, breathing life into the painting through the interplay of light and shadow. I take a deep breath. The scent of dried grass and earthy soil fills the air, sliding down my throat and washing away the heaviness in my chest. I feel like a traveler who has stumbled into a masterpiece, yet at the same time, I feel I've always belonged here. The stone slabs bear not only my physical weight but also my restless sense of idleness. Their cool touch reminds me that pausing right now isn't a waste of time, but a profound kind of nourishment. Within this golden landscape, I've learned to make peace with my own shadow. I let those quiet, stolen moments settle into a graceful appreciation for life, allowing my soul to find complete rest and relaxation, wrapped in these warm autumn hues.

In Yichun, I discovered a seriously underrated treasure town—Wanzai Ancient City! It’s not the usual cookie-cutter commercial street; this is the real deal with authentic Ming and Qing dynasty Gan-style architecture, and best of all, free admission! 📍Recommended route Take the high-speed train to Yichun Station, then board the custom “Wanzai–Yichun” shuttle to get off at “Tianxia Ancient City” stop; if driving, just navigate to “Wanzai Ancient City.” It’s 1.5 hours from Nanchang and about 3 hours from Changsha. 🏛️What to see The highlight is the Tianxia ancestral hall complex, with 27 ancient halls dating from the Ming and Qing dynasties to the Republic era, representing 15 family names! White walls, black tiles, blue brick horse-head walls, and weathered stone paths—every shot looks like a classic ancient scene. Arrive after 4 PM to catch the beautiful slanting sunlight on the eaves. The Lvyin ancestral hall is the largest and most exquisitely crafted, with wood and brick carvings so detailed you can’t look away. 🍵What to drink Be sure to visit Congquan Teahouse and order a 3-yuan big bowl tea with free refills! The tea includes herbs like vetiver root and tangerine peel, giving it a unique herbal aroma. Sitting in a century-old house, snacking on sunflower seeds and sugar oil cake, you can easily spend the whole afternoon relaxing. 🍜What to eat Wanzai zha fen is a must-try intangible cultural heritage dish—smooth and chewy; zha rou is fatty but not greasy, locally called “the bride’s face dish.” There’s also chopped meat noodles, oil rice cakes, fermented tofu… For a proper meal, order the “Wanzai six big bowls,” which includes rich fried rolls, Wanzai fish chunks, and Kangle three-yellow chicken. 🎆The main event Every Saturday at 8 PM, the ancient city lights up with fireworks! It’s free! When fireworks explode over the thousand-year-old rooftops, the blue bricks and black tiles flicker in the light—it’s truly moving. It’s best to arrive half an hour early near Lvyin ancestral hall to get a good spot. 💡Tips Arrive in the afternoon, stay until the fireworks at night, and experience the full day-to-night transition. The ancient city is open all day, and the lanterns at night add even more charm. There are many guesthouses nearby, so stay overnight and explore at a relaxed pace. Wanzai Ancient City isn’t a “cookie-cutter” internet-famous spot; it’s a place where you can comfortably relax with tea, watch fireworks, and take your time. The sun is just right, the tea is still warm, and you’re not rushing anywhere—that’s what a weekend should feel like✨
