Tested by lazy travelers! High-speed rail summer escapes that aren’t crowded or expensive
In summer, squeezing into popular attractions means either seeing the back of someone’s head or feeling like you’re in a sauna. These destinations are accessible by high-speed rail, have affordable admission tickets, and feel several degrees cooler than the city. Some are by mountains, some by water, and some are natural air-conditioned spots. No need for complicated planning—just pack and go.
01 Jining | Shandong
Most people visit Jining for the Three Confucian Sites, but I suggest entering the Confucius Temple after 4 PM.
⏰ Enter the East Gate of the Ming Ancient City at 3:30 PM. First, stroll around the outer Que Li Street, where the tree shade fully covers the stone pavement. Occasionally, a breeze blows through, feeling even more comfortable than air conditioning. When most tourists start leaving, buy your ticket to enter the Confucius Temple. The evening light slants over the Apricot Altar and Stele Pavilion with no one blocking your view, and you can hear your footsteps on the bluestone slabs.
Head straight to Weishan Lake early the next morning.
⚠️ Don’t take the noisy and expensive speedboats at the dock. Instead, take the ferry from the wetland park entrance for 10 yuan per person. The boatman rows through the reeds. The lotus leaves are almost taller than a person, and you can reach out to pick lotus pods. The boat stops in the middle of the lake, surrounded only by bird calls and the rustling reeds.
🍜 You must bring a basket of salted duck eggs from Old Li’s on the island. The yolks are oily and delicious, perfect wrapped in freshly made pancakes with scallions.
02 Anqing | Anhui
Tianzhu Mountain is truly cool in summer. Take the cable car halfway up, then hike 40 minutes to the South Heavenly Gate.
⏰ Before 10 AM, the mountain is full of mist. Water droplets hang on pine branches, and the temperature feels just above 20°C. Don’t wear shorts—the mountain breeze will give you goosebumps.
I learned the hard way about the hiking routes. Take the cable car at Dalongwo, hike to Liandan Lake, then return. It’s just the right amount of effort. Don’t be greedy and descend via Xiguan; the stairs there are so steep you’ll question your life choices. Bring two bottles of water. Along the way, an elderly lady sells cucumbers for 5 yuan each, chilled in creek water. They’re crisp and refreshing.
Don’t rush to leave after descending.
📍 At the foot of the mountain is a guesthouse area called Tianzhu Mountain Villa, where you can hear the creek at night. 🌙 Bring a chair and sit in the courtyard. The sky is full of stars, at least three times brighter than in the city.
03 Huzhou | Zhejiang
Nanxun Ancient Town is perfect for an overnight stay. During the day, Bai Jianlou is packed with tour groups. After 5 PM, when the crowds clear, Nanxun reveals its true charm.
⏰ Walk along Ditang River at dusk. The covered walkways on both sides light up with warm yellow lamps, their reflections shimmering on the water. Find a riverside teahouse, order a pot of white tea for 20 yuan, and listen to the Yue opera from the stage across the river. The singing drifts over the water.
🍜 Next to Zhang Shiming’s former residence, the freshly steamed Dingsheng cake is sold. The red bean paste filling carries a hint of osmanthus fragrance.
Visit again before 7 AM the next day. Shops are closed, and only local grandmothers wash clothes by the water on the stone pavement. Walk from Jiayetang Library straight to Zhang Jingjiang’s former residence without detours.
⚠️ Xiaolianzhuang is closed Monday mornings. Don’t make a wasted trip.
04 Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture | Xinjiang
Sayram Lake is the safest bet in all of Xinjiang. Take the high-speed train from Urumqi to Bole, then hire a car for the two-hour drive.
⚠️ Don’t rent a bike at the scenic area entrance. The lake’s circumference is 90 km, and your legs won’t feel like your own by the end. It’s better to take the sightseeing bus to the Dianjiangtai stop, then walk 20 minutes along the boardwalk to the lakeshore, where it’s least crowded. The water is as blue as a bottle of ink spilled in it, with snow-capped mountains in the distance. At the shore, herders sell freshly grilled lamb skewers for 5 yuan each. The fatty meat sizzles with oil, sprinkled with cumin, filling the air with irresistible aroma.
Don’t visit Anjihai Grand Canyon during the day.
⏰ At 6 PM, the light is just right. The canyon walls glow warm orange and ocher, like a crack in the earth. Standing on the viewing platform looking down, your legs might feel weak.
⚠️ Stay away from the cliff edge; the soil is loose.
05 Bijie | Guizhou
Zhijin Cave is the coolest cave I’ve visited. It stays around 10°C year-round, so bring a jacket. The stalactites under colorful lights look like hanging Buddha hands or layered cakes.
⏰ Before 10 AM, it’s less crowded. At the “Overlord Helmet” section, a six-meter-tall stalagmite lit up looks like a giant wearing a golden crown.
⚠️ Some steps inside are slippery. Wear non-slip shoes.
Don’t visit Baili Rhododendron in summer; the flowers bloom early. Instead, go to nearby Yishan Flower Valley, which is higher in elevation and feels 7–8 degrees cooler than the city.
📍 On the mountain is a glass walkway called “Sea of Flowers in the Clouds.” Standing on it, you see the deep valley below, and the wind blows up from beneath, feeling refreshingly cool. If you’re with elderly or children, just take the stone path below—no need for the walkway.
06 Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture | Hunan
Fenghuang Ancient Town is commercialized during the day, but visit after 5:30 PM. Tour groups leave, lanterns light up the stilted buildings along the Tuojiang River, and bars haven’t gotten noisy yet. Take a black-awning boat from the North Gate dock. The boatman sings mountain songs, pausing after a few lines to ask if you want to pay for another. Ignore it—the free part is enough.
📍 When the boat turns at Wanming Pagoda, the water is deepest. The old houses reflect on the water, perfect for double-exposure photos of Fenghuang.
The next day, visit Dehang Grand Canyon. Enter from under the Aizhai Bridge, where waterfalls and deep pools line the path.
⏰ At 9 AM, the mist hasn’t cleared. Water droplets from the waterfalls hit your face, like walking inside a humidifier. At the “Flowing Silk Waterfall,” water drifts down a 200-meter cliff, turning into mist before it hits the ground.
⚠️ Wear quick-dry clothes or bring a raincoat, or you’ll be soaked by the end.
07 Sanming | Fujian
Dajin Lake is best explored by boat. Board at the dock and pass through Yixiantian and Ganlu Temple.
⏰ The 2 PM boat has the fewest people. The boat enters the canyon, where the Danxia cliffs glow red from the moisture. Ganlu Temple is built inside a cave without a single nail, supported by one pillar. The stairs are narrow, so you have to turn sideways to climb. But standing at the temple entrance looking over the lake, the view is as wide as a painting.
Taining Ancient City is older than you’d expect. The wood carvings in Ming and Qing Garden are so detailed you could stare at each door and window for a long time.
🍜 On the old street in the ancient city, the “Youjiang Tofu” is fried crispy outside and tender inside. Dip it in chili powder. A large portion costs 6 yuan.
⚠️ Taining has no high-speed rail station. Take a bus from Nanping, about 1.5 hours.
08 Tianshui | Gansu
Maijishan Grottoes are cool even in summer. Climb onto the plank road, and the mountain breeze dries the sweat on your forehead instantly.
⏰ Enter the scenic area at 3 PM to avoid the morning student groups and catch the sunset light on the grottoes. The expressions on the clay Buddha statues look especially peaceful in the evening light.
⚠️ If you’re afraid of heights, be cautious. The plank road hangs on the cliff, and looking down can make your legs weak.
Wushan Water Curtain Cave and Maijishan offer different experiences. Wushan is wilder. The waterfall falls from a cliff over 60 meters high, covering half the cave like a curtain. Standing behind the waterfall, sunlight passing through the water droplets creates a rainbow.
🍜 At the foot of the mountain, villagers sell handmade liangpi noodles. Mix with garlic water and chili oil for a sour and spicy appetizer.
Fuxi Temple is in the city, no need to plan a separate trip. It’s usually a 15-minute walk from your hotel. The ancient cypress trees in the temple are hundreds of years old, shading the courtyard completely. Sitting on the steps in front of the hall and feeling the breeze is more comfortable than staying in an air-conditioned room.
Most of these places are accessible by high-speed rail, and admission tickets are affordable. If I had to pick one, I’d recommend Sayram Lake and Tianzhu Mountain—one for water, one for mountains, both refreshingly cool. Tell me in the comments which one you want to visit first?
