Whitby travel guide and discussion

Whitby is a historic and enchanting port town and seaside resort located in North Yorkshire, England, right where the River Esk meets the North Sea. The town is unique for its stunning coastal scenery and a maritime history that played a key role in global exploration. It is clearly divided into two sides by the River Esk and the historic 1908 swing bridge. The West Cliff serves as a modern resort area with wide sandy beaches and the landmark Whale Bone Arch. In contrast, the East Cliff is the old town, where ancient cobbled streets maintain the feel of a traditional fishing village, crowned by the majestic ruins of an ancient abbey on the hilltop. You haven't truly experienced Whitby until you've had their fish and chips; as an active fishing port, the seafood is incredibly fresh, especially at the legendary Magpie Cafe.

Forget the car and the train. The Coastliner 840 is the journey and the destination. 🗺️✨ 🌅 8:20 AM — Leaving York We boarded the earliest Coastliner 840 from York ☕ The city's medieval walls faded behind us and within minutes we were trading cobbled streets for open countryside. 🏰➡️🌳 🌾 Through the North York Moors The bus doesn't just pass through the North York Moors — it dances through them. · Pickering — a charming market town with a castle and steam railway 🚂 · Goathland — this is Aidensfield and the station doubled as Hogsmeade in Harry Potter 🪄 · Endless moorland — purple heather, grazing sheep and skies so big you'll forget you're on public transport 🐑💜 💡 Tips for Your Trip ✅ Sit on the top deck, right side for the best views ✅ Grab the earliest bus ✅ Day ticket = incredible value 💷 #uktravelmessageboard #YorkToWhitby #Coastliner840 #Whitby #VisitWhitby #NorthYorkshire #NorthYorkMoors #BusTravel #ScenicJourney

#overratedspots Whitby is definitely beautiful — but is it too famous? 👀 🐟 The fish & chips were delicious! 🏛️ Whitby Abbey is impressive, and the sea views are absolutely gorgeous. 🌊 But the biggest problem? The crowds. 😭 Because Whitby is so popular, the town can get extremely busy, especially during peak times. For me, the crowds took away some of the charm and made it harder to properly enjoy the scenery. 💡 My tip: If you have more time, consider exploring some of the nearby coastal towns instead. You can find similar beautiful sea views and charming seaside scenery, but with far fewer visitors. ✨ My verdict: 📸 Views — Beautiful 🐟 Fish & chips — Definitely worth trying 👥 Crowds — Too much for me Whitby is worth seeing at least once, but next time, I'd rather discover somewhere a little less famous. 😆 #Whitby #Yorkshire #NorthYorkshire #EnglandTravel #UKTravel #WhitbyAbbey #FishAndChips #CoastalTown #TravelTips #OverratedSpot #TripMoments

🇬🇧 One tip that saved us money while travelling around the UK 🚆💰 If you’re planning to explore the UK by train, here’s one tip I wish I had known sooner: Get a Railcard! My husband and I got the Two Together Railcard, and it has saved us a lot of money. It costs £35 for one year, and as long as the two registered people travel together, you get 1/3 off most train tickets across Great Britain. After just a few longer journeys, it had already paid for itself. We use it for almost every trip, whether it’s a day trip to places like York, Durham or Whitby, or longer journeys across England and Scotland. Which Railcard is right for you? There isn’t just one Railcard! Here are the main options: 🚆 16–25 Railcard – for travellers aged 16–25. 🚆 26–30 Railcard – for young adults aged 26–30. 👵 Senior Railcard – for anyone aged 60+. 👨👩👧 Family & Friends Railcard – perfect for families travelling with children. 👫 Two Together Railcard – for two named adults who usually travel together (friends, partners or family members). ♿ Disabled Persons Railcard – for eligible disabled travellers. 🎖️ Veterans Railcard – for eligible UK veterans. There are also a few more specialised Railcards depending on where you travel. Most of them offer up to 1/3 off rail fares. Where should you buy it? You can buy your Railcard from the official Railcard website, but Trip.com also sells Railcards, and they sometimes offer promotions that make them even cheaper than buying directly. Before purchasing, compare both prices, you might save a little extra. We got ours for 27 £. One thing to know: if you buy your Railcard through Trip.com, the digital Railcard stays inside the Trip.com app rather than the official Railcard app, so you’ll need to show it there during ticket inspections. #railcard #savingtips Is it worth it? Absolutely! If you’re spending more than a few days in the UK and planning to visit different cities by train, a Railcard can easily save you far more than it costs. For us, it’s been one of the best travel investments we’ve made in the UK. 🇬🇧✨ Have you used a Railcard before? Which one?

Whitby quickly became one of my favorite day trips in North Yorkshire. It’s a charming seaside town full of history, dramatic scenery, and great food. We arrived around noon and headed straight to Magpie Café for lunch. Whitby is famous for serving some of the best fish and chips in England, and Magpie Café is one of its most iconic restaurants. The queue for the restaurant was quite long, so we decided to order from the takeaway instead. The prices are a little cheaper, but keep in mind that it doesn’t come with lemon, and the mushy peas is charged separately. If you’re planning to eat in the restaurant, I’d recommend making a reservation in advance. Otherwise, the takeaway is a great option, just be mindful of the seagulls. The fish and chips definitely lived up to the reputation! The fish was incredibly fresh, with a light, crispy batter and a large, thick fillet that was perfectly flaky inside. After lunch, we walked along West Pier all the way to Whitby Harbour West Lighthouse. The views over the North Sea are beautiful, and along the pier we saw families and children catching crabs using buckets, nets, and crab lines that are sold in many of the local shops. It’s a fun local tradition to watch. There are also plenty of places selling ice cream, fudge, and other traditional seaside sweets. On our way back, we walked up to the Captain Cook Memorial. James Cook began his maritime career in Whitby as a young apprentice, learning the navigation skills that would later lead him to map Newfoundland in Canada, circumnavigate New Zealand, chart Australia’s east coast, and become one of Britain’s greatest explorers. The viewpoint here is fantastic, you can see the harbour, the North Sea, and the impressive ruins of Whitby Abbey across the town. Don’t miss the photo opportunity at the nearby Whalebone Arch. Next, we crossed the River Esk and explored the charming Church Street, one of the prettiest streets in Whitby. It’s lined with independent shops selling local crafts, Whitby Jet jewelry, antiques, sweets, and unique souvenirs. You’ll also notice countless references to Dracula. Author Bram Stoker visited Whitby in the 1890s and used the town as the setting for key scenes in his famous novel. In the story, Dracula arrives in Whitby by ship before making his way to the Abbey. Today, the town fully embraces its gothic connection with themed shops, ghost tours, and an annual Goth Weekend festival. At the end of Church Street, we climbed the famous 199 Steps to St Mary’s Church and Whitby Abbey. The steps themselves have become one of Whitby’s most iconic landmarks, and the view from the top is well worth the climb. Whitby Abbey has an incredible history. The original monastery was founded in 657 AD by Saint Hilda, became one of the most important religious sites in Anglo-Saxon England, was destroyed during Viking raids, and later rebuilt by the Normans. The magnificent ruins you see today date from the medieval abbey, which was abandoned during King Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. The dramatic ruins overlooking the sea later inspired Bram Stoker while writing Dracula. There is a café and a public toilet near the Abbey, making it a good place to take a short break before exploring further. Tickets can easily be purchased at the entrance if you haven’t booked in advance. After visiting the Abbey, we made our way back down through town and caught the train home. Whitby is the perfect combination of history, coastal scenery, delicious food, and literary legends. It was absolutely worth the trip, and I’d happily come back again. #uktrip Whitby is a great place! The views are stunning, both in the town and also at the Abbey/Castle! On a clear day you can see Norway from Whitby Pier/jetty. There are boat tours, usually 30 minutes, a variety to chose from as well. There is also a Whale watching tour, I didn't go on this as I wasn't aware and you needed to book in advance, but this is must! There is a nice cafe with beautiful views close to the Abbey where you can get stunning pictures. There is a railway and local buses running to places. There are also tour buses that take your sights in Whitby.

The Fisherman's Wife Whitby is a famous seafood restaurant in Whitby, offering fresh seafood dishes alongside stunning sea views. Conveniently located in the heart of the town, it's easy to find and situated along the path to the viewpoint. Be aware that the restaurant gets very crowded during lunch and dinner hours. To avoid long waits, it's recommended to visit around 11 AM for lunch or before 6 PM for dinner. Their signature dish, fish and chips, is a must-try, featuring incredibly fresh fish. Another surprising delight is the baked mussels, which are fresh, plump, and free of any fishy smell—truly a wow moment. Fried shrimp and scallops are also highly recommended. While there are many other dishes to choose from, we couldn't try them all. If you're visiting Whitby, this restaurant is a must-visit for fresh and delicious seafood that won't disappoint.

From York to Edinburgh, you must not miss Whitby. I've had this seaside town on my list for a long time. With its medieval streets and colorful boats, it's a picture-perfect scene. However, Whitby is much more than that. It's the place where Captain Cook set sail, and it flourished during the Age of Exploration. It's also the birthplace of vampire culture. 130 years ago, the Irish novelist Bram Stoker wrote the famous vampire novel *Dracula* in Whitby. · Whitby is not a big town, but half a day is still a rush. From the ancient abbey ruins to the bustling harbor and beach, it was undoubtedly the most memorable part of my trip to England. The weather was also very fitting. At Whitby Abbey, there was a cloudy, vampire-like atmosphere, but when we got to the town beach, the sun suddenly came out, and it felt like a perfect vacation day. · Here is the route of our city walk, which you can refer to: Whitby Abbey → St. Mary's Church and Graveyard → 199 Steps → Papa's Fish and Chips → Whalebone Arch → Whitby Beach · ⭐Highlights ✅Whitby Abbey: This war-torn abbey was built between the 11th and 14th centuries and is located on a high point in the heart of the town. Although only ruins remain today, the huge pillars, towering arches, and open windows, against the backdrop of rainy weather, have a desolate beauty. This is the inspiration for the vampire novel *Dracula* and is considered the ancestral home of the Dracula family. ✅St. Mary's Church and Graveyard: Located near the abbey, this is also a prototype of the scenes in *Dracula*. Walking through it, you feel like you are in a Gothic story. The graveyard facing the sea is quiet and desolate, with a rich atmosphere. ✅199 Steps: To get from the abbey to Whitby town, you need to descend 199 steps. This is also Whitby's east cliff, which offers excellent views overlooking the entire town and harbor. The red-roofed houses, blue sea, and ancient abbey ruins create a stunning picture. At the bottom of the steps is Church Street, where you can find antique shops, candy stores, and Gothic souvenir shops. ✅Whalebone Arch: In the 18th century, Whitby was a famous whaling port in England, and the town became famous overseas for its whaling industry. Norwegian fishermen gave Whitby a pair of whale jawbones, which were made into a whalebone arch. Not far from the arch is Captain Cook's passage, which is also the starting point of Captain Cook's voyages. ✅Whitby Beach: Opposite the east cliff is the sandy beach at the west end of the town. The sand is fine, and you can take pictures of the colorful cabins and the lighthouse by the sea while strolling along the caramel-colored sand. It's suitable for sunbathing and playing in the water in summer. · 🍴Food ✅Fish and chips is a national dish of England, and Papa's Fish and Chips has been rated by the BBC as the best fish and chips in the UK. Takeout is recommended to avoid queues. Be especially careful of seagulls trying to steal your food. ✅In addition to the classic fish and chips, Whitby's crab sandwiches and smoked fish are also worth trying. · 💡Tips 🎫Tickets: Whitby Abbey £12 🚌Transportation: Driving or chartering a car is recommended. Public transportation is slightly complicated. You need to take a bus from York (Route 840, approx. 2.5 hrs) or a train (transfer required, approx. 1.5 hrs). The last bus departs around 6pm, so it is recommended to check the timetable in advance.

Although the journey from York to Edinburgh is long, it's the perfect opportunity to visit the charming seaside town of Whitby. Not only is it the hometown of Captain Cook and boasts breathtaking ocean views, but it's also the birthplace of vampire culture. · Whitby Abbey, the town's landmark, sits atop the East Cliff, its silhouette resembling a massive Gothic tombstone against the skyline. Built between the 11th and 14th centuries, this ancient and sacred building occupies a central position overlooking the entire town. · More than a religious building, Whitby Abbey feels like a dramatic film set. Only upon entering can you understand why this colossal medieval structure inspired Victorian novelist Bram Stoker to choose it as Count Dracula's domain in his famous vampire novel, *Dracula*. The novel draws inspiration from Whitby Abbey, and much of the story unfolds within Whitby itself. · The day we visited was overcast and windy, sending shivers down our spines. The abbey, scarred by war, now stands in ruins, yet its Gothic arches and tracery windows still exude an aura of mystery. The desolate beauty of the ruins is breathtaking, as if time has stood still. There's an undeniable dark aesthetic, perfectly befitting the vampire narrative. · 📸Must-see experiences Besides the abbey itself, these two nearby spots are also worth visiting: ✅199 Steps: This is the only way to reach the abbey and also Whitby's best viewpoint. Along the way, you can enjoy panoramic views of the town and the stunning seascape. Any photo you take here will be a masterpiece. I was drawn to this place by photos I saw! ✅St. Mary's Church: Located next to the abbey, this church is surrounded by a cemetery facing the sea. It's a tranquil and desolate place, steeped in history and perfect for contemplation. · 💡Tips 🚌Getting there: You can take a direct train from York or Middlesbrough to Whitby Railway Station. Alternatively, take bus 843 or 835 from York, which offers scenic views of the North York Moors National Park along the way. ⏰Opening hours: 10:00 am–6:00 pm daily (closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day) 🎫Tickets: GBP 12 for adults

Many of England’s seaside resorts can be labelled as run down and dated, however one that has stood the test of time is North Yorkshire’s Whitby. The town made famous by Bram Stoker’s Dracula has plenty to keep you occupied from a visit to its imposing hilltop abbey, to wandering around its narrow streets and alleys to just taking a stroll along the beach. For those with a little more time and wanting to explore the outdoors the 6 mile coastal path to Robin Hood’s bay provides some spectacular scenery and if you don’t fancy the return leg there’s a frequent bus you can catch back to your start point. #whitby #yorkshire #seaside

There's such a treasure of a seaside town near York, UK! I really like Whitby and the town of Saltburn Especially on a sunny day, it's great for taking pictures📸 The two towns are very close, about half an hour's drive You can also visit Robin Hood's Bay Seaside town day trip vacation🌊 ✨Day trip guide ✅Whitby As the birthplace of Dracula, Whitby is also known as the hometown of vampires. ✨Whitby Abbey The first stop is Whitby's landmark - Whitby Abbey. Whitby Abbey was built between the 11th and 14th centuries. Today, the ruined building faces the east coast of England, with a whole cemetery facing the sea, the Gothic church beams reflecting the blue sky, full of desolation. You can drive to the Abbey, or climb 199 steps from the town to the main entrance, overlooking the whole town from the top of the hill, the scenery is beautiful! ✨Whitby Harbour After visiting the Abbey, you can stroll around the town, don't miss the no1 fish and chips here🍟 The whole of Whitby along the coast is scenic, especially the two long piers of the harbour, all the way there are various cafes and local specialty shops~ If you have time, you can also visit the Captain Cook Museum, Whitby is also the starting point of Captain Cook's voyage~ ✅Saltburn-By-The-Sea Half an hour's drive and you'll arrive at this town I love! ✨Colourful Houses There's a row of colourful houses by the beach in this seaside resort town🌈 Facing the Atlantic in a line, it's great for taking pictures! There are many snack bars and cafes along the beach, eating and drinking along the way, enjoying the leisurely holiday time~ ✨Saltburn Cliff Lift The most popular place in the town is probably the cliff lift here🚡 The best photo spot is on top of the lift, overlooking the entire red lift station from the hillside, with the Atlantic Ocean in the background, it's a magnificent sight.

📍sherlocks coffee shop : 10 Flowergate Whitby YO21 3BA , England 📍magpie cafe : 14 Pier Road, YO21 3PU UK Whitby While walking around the city, I came across Sherlocks Cafe decorated with navy and gold and went in as if I was possessed. The scones here were really delicious! And since this place is also used as a hostel, I recommend it if you want a unique experience. Magpie Cafe is really famous for its fish and chips. I thought there would be a waiting line, but as expected, the line got longer after I went in. It's the most delicious food in England🍽. #winter #pleasewinter #yearendtrip #uniquecafe #uniquepension

The scenery on the way down after seeing the monastery was a peaceful and beautiful atmosphere that I had never seen before😊 Personally, I thought the view of the monastery from afar was more beautiful than when I was inside the monastery. What was unusual was that many people in the city center took huge dogs for a walk 🐕 #winter #pleasetakewinter #yearendtrip #uk

Whitby is a coastal town in Yorkshire, North England. The most famous historic site here is the monastery, which inspired Bram Stoker to write his novel Dracula. As soon as I went to the place in the 4th photo, I immediately realized why he was inspired. I went in the morning, but I think you can feel the eerie atmosphere if you go around sunset. #winter #pleasewinter #yearendtrip #uk

They stand together on the headland, separated by a few dozen paces and a thousand years of history. One is a ruin. One is still in use. Both will stop you in your tracks. 💙 🪜 First, the Climb You can't drive to them. You have to earn them. 🥾 199 steps rise from the old town below, stone-worn and uneven, cutting between cottages and up onto the cliff. 😅 Take them slowly. Turn around halfway. The reward isn't just at the top — it's behind you the whole way. 👀🌊 · Rooftops tumbling toward the harbour 🏘️ · The River Esk splitting the town in two 🌊 · Boats, piers and the open sea beyond ⛵ · And above it all, the abbey getting closer with every step 🏰 By the time you reach the top, you've already had the best view in Whitby. 😍 🏰 Whitby Abbey — The Ruin That Refuses to Be Forgotten The abbey stands skeletal against the sky — no roof, no windows, just towering arches and empty stone frames. That's over 1,300 years of building, burning, rebuilding and ruining — all standing on one cliff. 📖 ⛪ St Mary's Church — Still Standing, Still Working A few steps from the abbey ruins, and you're somewhere completely different. 🙏 St Mary's Church isn't a ruin. It's alive. Still holding services. Still ringing its bells. Still the parish church of Whitby after 900 years. 🔔 🪦 The Churchyard — Whitby's Most Atmospheric Corner Tilting headstones. Salt-bitten inscriptions. Ravens. Sea mist. And beyond the wall, the abbey ruins and the whole North Sea. 🌊🖤 🌅 The View They Share Stand between the abbey and the church. Turn in a slow circle. 🌀 · North — the coast toward Sandsend and beyond 🏖️ · East — the open sea, nothing but water to Norway 🌊 · South — the harbour, the piers, the town below 🗼 · West — the moors rising up behind the rooftops 🌾 Two buildings. One headland. And the best panorama in Yorkshire. 📸 #WhitbyAbbey #StMarysChurch #Whitby #VisitWhitby #199Steps #NorthYorkshire #YorkshireCoast

🗺️ Where the Town Meets the Water The River Esk doesn't just pass through Whitby — it divides it. 🏘️➡️🏘️ It flows down from the North York Moors, cuts the town clean in two, and empties into the North Sea between two piers. Everything about Whitby's shape — the harbour, the bridges, the two halves of town — comes down to this one river. 🌊 East side: the abbey, the 199 steps, the old town. West side: the shops, the station, the wider streets. And in the middle? The Esk, carrying boats, gulls and centuries of history. 🕊️ 🌉 The Swing Bridge — Whitby's Beating Heart If the river is the heart of Whitby, the Swing Bridge is its pulse. 💓 It pivots open to let boats through, holding up traffic and pedestrians alike — you stop, you watch, you wait, and somehow that's the point. ⏳🚢 Stand on it and look both ways: · Seaward — the harbour mouth, the piers, the open water beyond 🌊 · Inland — the upper harbour, boats moored in rows, the town climbing the valley sides ⛵ It's the best free view in Whitby. 😍 #RiverEsk #Whitby #VisitWhitby #WhitbyHarbour #SwingBridge #NorthYorkshire #YorkshireCoast

We didn’t set foot on the beach — Whitby's best angles come from looking down at it 🌊 The View You Don't Need Sand For · The Pier — walk out between the lighthouses and turn back. The whole town stacks up behind you: abbey on the cliff, church tower, rooftops tumbling toward the water. 🗼 · The Promenade — a slow stroll along the seafront with the sand below and the harbour mouth ahead. 👟 · The High Ground — from up by the Abbey and St Mary's Church, you get the full panorama: harbour, piers, both sides of the town, and the coast stretching north and south. 😍 📸 Why It Works · You see the shape of Whitby — the gap in the coast where the Esk meets the sea · The abbey ruins frame everything · Boats, piers and rooftops give it scale #Whitby #VisitWhitby #NorthYorkshire #YorkshireCoast

My wife and I just returned from a week at the Royal Hideaway and are already planning our next visit. This was my first time on Mexico's east coast after almost 20 years of vacationing on the west coast, primarily in Puerto Vallarta. Given the mixed reviews about the resort, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. The staff was outstanding—special thanks to Fernanda, Miriam, Aurelia, and Aurellio! Although this is an adults-only resort, we did see a couple with two very well-behaved teenage girls (probably around 16+). Most of the guests appeared to be English speakers—Americans, Canadians, and British—along with a few Spanish-speaking visitors. The staff's English skills were impressive, with some completely fluent. Fernanda mentioned she took lessons and watched a lot of "Friends" on TV to learn! As others have mentioned, the air conditioning in the rooms isn't the strongest, but my wife and I didn’t have much trouble sleeping after the first night. Anyone requiring a constant 65°F room may want to consider other options. However, after spending our days by the pool and enjoying the resort's activities, we found the room cool and comfortable. I recommend emailing the resort before your arrival to make dinner reservations at their restaurants. We only planned for the first part of our trip and had to take whatever dining times were available later in the week. Fortunately, Fernanda was very helpful in accommodating us. In summary, this resort offers nice amenities and a competent, friendly staff at a reasonable price. If you’re expecting Waldorf Astoria-level luxury, it may not meet your expectations, but for a well-managed, enjoyable experience, this is a great choice.

Whitby is a total vibe—a dramatic, gothic seaside town split by a harbor, with a mix of moody history, killer fish and chips, and stunning coastal views. The whole town is overlooked by the spooky cliffside ruins of Whitby Abbey (the inspiration for Dracula), and you can spend hours wandering the narrow, cobbled streets of the Old Town, climbing the iconic 199 Steps, or checking out the traditional smokehouses. If you want to head inland to Goathland and Pickering, the absolute best way to do it is on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR). It’s a vintage steam train that chugs right through the middle of the gorgeous North York Moors National Park. A beautiful place that is very much worth a visit
