Taking advantage of the Thanksgiving short holiday, this LA local went back to the mountains! Two days at Big Bear Lake, and on the last day visited beautiful Idyllwild (which I like to call the Yosemite of Southern California). Hiked one trail each day to deeply breathe fresh air and recharge energy. Day 1 Big Bear Lake Cougar Crest Trail, on the north shore of the lake. The first mountain view offers a sight of the lake and the snowy mountains to the south! (p2) Especially pleasing to the eye. The slope is moderate, but we didn’t finish because it got dark at 5 pm, though the sunset glow was amazing! The parking lot is large, and when we arrived in the afternoon, we even saw a seven-colored auspicious cloud halfway up the trail. There was some scattered snow by the trail, which was fun to play with. Friends with extra energy can keep going all the way to Bertha Peak. Day 2 Big Bear Lake’s popular Castle Rock Trail involves climbing rocks. Many parents bring their kids here to play. There are some slopes, and sometimes you need to use both hands and feet to climb. It’s very fun, and you can wear anti-slip gloves. Near the top, there was snow and ice. We only took photos at the viewing area and near Castle Rock, and the scenery was already great. The lake looked closer and clearer, with the sunset glow shining on it, very romantic. But since the trail is on the south shore, you can’t see the snowy mountains. At night, we went to Boulder Bay Park to stargaze by the lake, it was a bit cold 🥶. Day 3 Went to the long-awaited Idyllwild, which I had heard has beautiful scenery. Driving up the mountain offers a panoramic view of fields and the city, with a very wide view. The distant mountains show deep and light blue shadows interlaced, and the nearby colorful trees look like a painting. Hiked Suicide Rock via Deer Springs Trail, with a steady climb. Actually walked 8 miles with 2000 ft elevation gain. On the way down, watched the orange-red sun slowly set, and finally the distant horizon had only a faint light left. By the time we reached the bottom, the sky was full of stars. Very satisfying! This time stayed in San Bernardino, the hotel was about $100 a night.
