For summer escapes, some spend thousands flying to the plateau, while others take a two-hour high-speed train to dive into 25℃ shade. These eight spots range from the holy city at 3,600 meters elevation to European-style estates in Northeast China, from grasslands to caves. The perceived temperature is about 10 degrees cooler than the city, and best of all, they’re not crowded. NO.1 Lhasa | Tibet Many think Lhasa is only cold in winter, but July and August are when it truly feels like a natural air-conditioned room. Daytime temperatures hover just above 20 degrees, dropping to 10 degrees at night. Wearing short sleeves outside will have you shivering in the wind, so a fleece jacket is a must. 📍 Namtso Lake, at 4,700 meters elevation, where the wind by the lake is strong enough to blow your hat into the water. After 3 PM, clouds press down, turning the lake from sapphire blue to grayish blue—a scene more stunning than any filter. ⚠️ Don’t stay by the lake too long; the wind can cause headaches, and altitude sickness is no joke. Back in the city, the Potala Palace square lights up at 7:30 PM. The white palace walls glow under the lights. NO.3 Xinyang | Henan When I think of summer escapes in Henan, Songshan Mountain doesn’t come to mind first—it’s Jigong Mountain. Located south of Xinyang at 800 meters elevation, the average summer temperature is 24℃. The villas on the mountaintop were built by foreigners during the Republic of China era. With red tiles and white walls hidden in the woods, stepping inside feels like traveling back in time. 📍 Jigong Mountain ancient hiking trail, start climbing at 7 AM. Trees on both sides of the stone steps block the sun completely. By halfway up, you can feel the cool air rising from your feet. ⚠️ Don’t take the cable car; it only goes halfway up and has a 40-minute wait. Climbing yourself is faster—about two hours to the top. At the summit, Baoxiao Peak, the wind is so strong you can barely stand, but the view is incredible. NO.5 Xianning | Hubei The name Xianning sounds cool, and it really is—especially around the Chibi Ancient Battlefield. When the wind blows, the whole grassland ripples like green waves. Daytime temperatures reach 25 degrees. It’s a bit sunny under the sun, but once you find shade, the breeze dries your sweat instantly. ⚠️ There are many mosquitoes on the grassland, especially fierce after 6 PM. Always carry mosquito repellent and wear long pants instead of shorts. If you stay in a Mongolian yurt, the temperature drops to the teens at night. Ask the host for a thick blanket. 🍜 Hand-held meat with milk tea—the aroma of the meat mixed with the milk. Sitting on the grassland watching the sunset, the sky changes from orange to purple to deep blue. At that moment, you’ll feel summer should be spent this way. 🚄 It’s about a two-hour drive from Xilinhot city. The roads are good, but gas stations are few along the way, so fill up before you leave. These 8 places have average summer temperatures much lower than the city, fewer people, and wild scenery—each worth a special visit. 01 Baoting County | Hainan People say Hainan is hot in summer because they haven’t been to the right spots. Baoting is tucked away on the southern slope of Wuzhi Mountain, where the tropical rainforest blocks the sun completely, making it feel several degrees cooler than Sanya. At Binglanggu Li and Miao cultural tourism area, enter right when it opens at 9 AM. Don’t rush to the main road; first turn into the alley with Li ethnic boat-shaped houses. Grandmas weave Li brocade at the door, and the shuttle passing through the cotton thread sounds more vivid than any narration. At the end, in the betel nut forest, the wind rustles the leaves, sending a cool breeze from your feet upward. Visit Yanoda Rainforest Cultural Tourism Area in the afternoon. No matter how strong the sun is, it can’t penetrate the dense canopy. Follow the trail to the waterfall and play in the water. The stream reaches just above your ankles and is so cold it makes you shiver. You’ll finish the whole route without breaking a sweat. ⚠️ There are many mosquitoes in the rainforest. Long pants and insect repellent are essential. The shuttle bus stops running at 5:30 PM, so don’t lose track of time. Book tickets online a day in advance; buying on-site is much more expensive. 02 Xilingol League | Inner Mongolia Summer on the grasslands means open, refreshing coolness. Daytime temperatures are in the 20s, but you’ll need a jacket at night. What else could you call a summer escape? At Wulagai Grassland, set your navigation to “Wulagai Management Area.” It’s a 40-minute drive from Bayin Hushuo Town. Don’t stop at the main gate; drive 10 more kilometers deeper where the grass really reaches your knees. At 3 PM, the wind blows over the grass tips, turning the whole grassland into waves of silver-green. Lying on the grassy slope, clouds slowly drift overhead, and time seems to slow down. Stay in a yurt in Bayin Hushuo Town for just over 100 a night. The conditions are basic but clean. At 10 PM, step outside and look up—the Milky Way stretches right above you, shining in a way you can’t see in the city. ⚠️ There’s no shade on the grassland. Use sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher, and don’t forget your hat and sunglasses. Mongolian yurts can be a bit damp at night in July and August, so bring a fleece if you get cold. 03 Yueyang City | Hunan The wind by Dongting Lake naturally cools the air. Summer in Yueyang isn’t especially cool, but compared to the steamy heat of Changsha, it feels gentle. Visit Yueyang Tower in the morning when it’s less crowded and the light is good. Climb to the third floor and look out—the 800-li Dongting Lake lies beneath, and the wind blowing in from the lake makes your clothes flutter. Go downstairs and turn right to walk along the city wall. The shaded stone steps are so comfortable you won’t want to leave all afternoon. You need to take a boat to Junshan Island; the dock is next to Yueyang Tower. The 20-minute ride is so windy you can barely keep your hat on. On the island is the Liuyi Well, where cool air gushes out of the well mouth. Putting your hand inside feels like touching ice water. ⏰ The last return boat leaves at 4:30 PM. Don’t miss it. Dongting Lake’s silverfish and lotus shoots are specialties. Find any roadside restaurant—the fish soup is so fresh it’ll make your eyebrows raise. 04 Aksu Prefecture | Xinjiang Summer in Xinjiang is hot under the sun but cool in the shade. At the mysterious Tianshan Grand Canyon, the temperature drops 10 degrees as soon as you enter the canyon mouth. The canyon is very windy, with gusts rushing through. The reddish-brown rock walls block the sunlight completely. Walk two kilometers in, look up to see a narrow strip of sky, and underfoot is dry sandy ground. The deeper you go, the cooler it gets. From noon to 2 PM, sunlight shines straight down the canyon, turning the rock walls golden red—the best time to see the canyon. ⚠️ There are no supply points inside the canyon. Bring your own water and snacks. Wear non-slip shoes as some rocks are slippery. It’s about an hour’s drive from Kuqa County. A round-trip private car costs around 200. The afternoon light is best for the canyon, and there are fewer people. The whole canyon is so quiet you only hear the wind and your footsteps. 05 Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture | Yunnan Yunnan’s coolness is gentle and soothing. Yuan Yang’s Hani terraces sit at 1,800 meters elevation, so you’ll need a light jacket in the early morning and evening. To see the sunrise at Yuan Yang terraces, get up early. By 6 AM, the Duoyishu viewing platform is already crowded with tripods, but don’t squeeze in there. Walk 200 meters to the right to an unnamed dirt slope with a wider view. At sunrise, mist rises from the valley, and the water in the terraces reflects the sky like broken mirrors stacked in layers. After watching the sunrise, go back to your guesthouse for a nap, then head to Bada in the afternoon for sunset, where the light outlines the ridges in gold. Jianshui Ancient Town is a few hundred meters lower and warmer than Yuan Yang but more comfortable. The town is small; two hours is enough to walk around. The ticket for Zhu Family Garden is a bit pricey, but you can skip it. The stone-paved road at the entrance is charming on its own. 🍜 Jianshui’s grilled tofu costs 0.5 yuan a piece. Before the crowds arrive, save this list. 01 Benxi | Liaoning What impresses me most about Benxi is how it offers two extremes: underground and above ground. In the morning, explore the Benxi water cave by boat, gliding through an underground river beneath low-hanging stalactites. The dripping water and cool air rise from your feet. Where is the coolest place to go in August? Don’t just focus on high altitudes. Grasslands, mountains and water, ancient towns—each has its own way to cool you down. From north to south, a few hours on the high-speed train can bring you to a completely different climate. The key is to avoid the crowds. I’ve made some mistakes and found some hidden gems. Today, I’ll share them with you. 01 Xilingol League | Inner Mongolia Uragai grassland. In August, the grass is so green it looks like it’s dripping water. Don’t just stand on the main road—go deeper in. The wind that fills your lungs is cool. ⏰ The light is softest around 3 to 4 PM. Shooting cows against the light is better than any filter. ⚠️ The temperature difference between day and night on the grassland is extreme. Wear short sleeves during the day but bring a light down jacket at night. I wore too little one day trying to stay cool and shivered badly. I finally wrapped myself in a blanket from the guesthouse to watch the full starry sky. 🚄 It’s best to take the high-speed train from Beijing to Chifeng, then hire a car for 2 hours. The road isn’t great, but the real grassland experience is deep inside. 02 Ganzhou | Jiangxi Shicheng and Sanbai Mountain. In August, southern Jiangxi feels cool and humid. Under the old walls of Shicheng, vendors carry trays selling cold noodles. The sour and spicy flavor hits your nose, and one bowl clears away the summer heat. Sanbai Mountain is even better. Don’t go at noon—the light is too flat. 06 Suzhou | Jiangsu Summer at the foot of Tiger Hill hides old Suzhou’s way to beat the heat. ⏰ After 5:30 PM, the back mountain of Tiger Hill is quiet. The bell at Hanshan Temple rings at 4 PM, just before the tourist rush. 📍 Turn left into a small alley after Hanshan Temple. There’s a stall selling water chestnuts. After 9 AM, tour groups flood in, and you won’t find a spot to take photos. 07 Yichang | Hubei The wind at the Three Gorges folk village is cool enough to chill to the bone. The Tujia stilt houses by the river bring a breeze mixed with the smell of water. ⏰ The river is bluest at 2 PM, but it’s exposed to the sun with no shade. Don’t stand at the bow of the boat. The Qingjiang Gallery is better for boat tours. Don’t overexert yourself climbing the dunes—use the wooden stairs to save energy, or you’ll want to roll down halfway up. ⚠️ Book tickets for Mogao Caves in advance—peak season tickets sell out two weeks ahead. Inside, don’t just look at the nine-story building; head north to the unopened caves where you can smell the thousand-year-old earth scent of the murals. 🚄 A taxi from downtown to Mogao Caves takes less than 30 minutes and costs about 30 yuan. Yadan and Yumenguan are on the same route. Renting a car for a day costs about 400 yuan, best shared by four people. At sunset, the wind at Yumenguan is strong enough to knock you over, but the beacon towers glow golden in the sunset. At that moment, you’ll feel the border guards from 2,000 years ago saw the same sun. 02 Shijiazhuang | Gansu Zhaozhou Bridge and downtown are southeast and northeast respectively. Which to choose? If you have only one day, head straight to Zhaozhou Bridge. It’s an authentic ancient site, not a replica. The stone slabs on the bridge are polished shiny, and the wind passing under the arches echoes the Sui dynasty. Don’t buy souvenirs at the entrance—the legend of the “cart wheel marks” on the bridge is worth more than anything. ⚠️ I skip Xibaipo—not because it’s bad, but if you only have two days, seeing Zhaozhou Bridge and having a bowl of Zhengding’s Eight Big Bowls in the city, then visiting Longxing Temple to see China’s tallest bronze Guanyin statue in the afternoon is just right. 🚄 A taxi from Shijiazhuang Station to Zhaozhou Bridge takes 40 minutes and costs about 60 yuan. Wear good walking shoes; the stone steps by the bridge are slippery. 03 Lu’an | Anhui Bringing elders or traveling solo? The choice between Tiantangzhai and Wanfo Lake is very different. If with elders, go to Wanfo Lake. The lake is wide, the boardwalk is gentle, and renting a boat to drift slowly while sipping tea by the water is a hundred times more comfortable than hiking. 🍜 At noon, try the fish head soup at a farmhouse restaurant by the lake. The broth is milky white and incredibly fresh. If alone or with friends, go to Tiantangzhai. ⏰ Enter the mountain at 5 AM to avoid traffic. When you reach halfway up, morning mist rises from the valley like a watercolor painting. ⚠️ Don’t take the cable car down. Walk the White Horse Grand Canyon trail instead. Order hand-pulled meat and milk tea. The meat is boiled in clear water, dipped in chive flowers, with little gamey taste and a delicious chew. ⚠️ Don’t rent horses at the scenic spots—it’s expensive and careless. Find a herder’s own horse for 50 yuan to ride for half an hour. The horses are gentle and can trot a bit. ⏰ After 3 PM, the grassland light and shadow are best for photos. No backlight, and every shot looks like wallpaper. 06 Wenzhou | Zhejiang Lingfeng and Lingyan in Yandang Mountain—which is more worth visiting? Here’s the conclusion: Lingfeng is for mountain shapes, Lingyan for waterfalls. My plan: start at Lingyan in the morning, follow the sound of flowing water to reach the bottom of Xiaolongqiu Waterfall—it’s small, but standing behind it with water droplets splashing on your face is refreshingly cool. 🚄 From Wenzhou city to Yandang Mountain, the high-speed train takes half an hour and costs less than 30 yuan. There’s a bus from the station to the scenic area. For lunch, try Wenzhou fried rice noodles at a small shop by the entrance. It’s full of wok flavor with fresh river shrimp. ⚠️ Liu Bowen’s hometown is in Wencheng County, far from Yandang Mountain. If time is tight, skip it—it’s a two-hour drive with a winding road. 07 Guiyang | Guizhou How to visit Qingyan Ancient Town and Tianhetan in one day? Go to Tianhetan in the morning. Don’t buy combo tickets—just get the admission and boat tickets. Take a boat into the cave. The water is crystal clear, stalactites drip overhead, and the boatman poles the boat into the dark cave like a scene from an adventure movie. 🍜 At noon, taxi to Qingyan Ancient Town. Enter from the south gate and head straight to the braised pig’s feet stall. The “Wang Ji” sign is bright yellow. The pig’s feet are tender and fall off the bone with chopsticks. Dip in chili powder for a spicy, fragrant taste. ⚠️ Choose either Huaxi Park or Gaopo Yunding Grassland. If time is tight, go to Gaopo Yunding. At dusk, the windmills turn slowly on the grassland, and the sky glows orange-red. It’s so beautiful you’ll want to lie down and sleep. 08 Yangzhou | Jiangsu Slender West Lake and Daming Temple are close, but my advice is: arrive at Slender West Lake at 3 PM, enter from the south gate, and walk along the lake to the Twenty-Four Bridge. There are fewer tourists then, the lake glows warm gold, and willow branches dip into the water with long shadows. Don’t take a boat—you won’t see the details on shore. 🍜 In the evening, go to Dongguan Street, but don’t eat on the main street. Turn into a side alley and find Jiangjiaqiao Dumpling Noodle Shop. These 8 spots have average summer temperatures cooler than an air-conditioned room, affordable prices, and high-speed rail access. Most importantly, you won’t get that “tourist trap” feeling. From Lingnan gardens to Inner Mongolia’s grasslands, you can stretch your summer vacation across a wide range of experiences and enjoy a premium summer escape on a budget. 01 Foshan | Guangdong Step into Qinghui Garden and feel like you’ve entered a Qing dynasty official’s private air-conditioned room. 🍜 There’s a snack stall hidden in the garden where they steam double-skin milk fresh. The milk skin is thick enough to peel off, the sweetness is just right, and it easily beats those trendy shops. After 4 PM when the sun isn’t so harsh, hike Xiqiao Mountain. Avoid the main entrance and start from the Biyu Cave entrance. There are fewer steps and more shade, and you can reach the summit in half an hour. ⚠️ The Guanyin statue plaza at the top is exposed to the sun with no shade. It’s best to visit after 5 PM to catch the sunset turning the whole Nanhai red. 02 Shuozhou | Shanxi Shahukou sounds fierce, but it’s actually a perfect spot to relax and watch the sunset. I arrived at 3 PM that day. The wind was strong enough to blow off hats, but mixed with the scent of loess and grass seeds, it was strangely intoxicating. Ask locals and they’ll tell you the old path is the real ancient battlefield site. The newly built boardwalk actually bypasses the most interesting beacon tower. ⏰ Try to get there before 5 PM. The slanting light casts shadows over two meters long on the ruined walls, giving photos a historic vibe. 03 Anqing | Anhui The best part of Tianzhu Mountain isn’t the summit but the misty corridor halfway up. 🚄 It’s just an hour and a half by carpool from Anqing station, costing about 30 yuan per person. Within a 2-hour high-speed train radius, there are many underrated small towns where you can enjoy peaceful, even slightly wild, moments at a very low cost. These 8 places are, in my opinion, just right for this time of year. 01 Chizhou | Anhui At the end of August in Chizhou, the summer heat lingers but the mountain breeze is already cool. 🍃 Pick a weekday morning to visit Jiuhua Mountain. You might still be sweating in short sleeves at the foot of the mountain, but once you take the cable car up, the wind cools your ears. Don’t oversleep—arrive before 7 AM when the clouds haven’t cleared yet, and the entire summit looks like it’s floating in a sea of clouds. 📍 Turn right at the stairs coming out of the Flesh Body Treasure Hall. It’s less crowded, moss grows in the stone cracks, and it’s perfect for back shots. Have a bowl of snow vegetable and bamboo shoot noodle soup at a shop at the foot of the mountain for lunch. The dried bamboo shoots are savory, and the broth has a hint of pork fat flavor, more satisfying than the temple’s vegetarian meals. ⚠️ A quick reminder: after 2 or 3 PM, thunderstorms often occur on the mountain. Keep an umbrella handy. When it rains, the temperature drops by 10 degrees, so bring a light jacket. 02 Tonghua | Jilin Tonghua is seriously underrated. Its Goguryeo relics and summer rapeseed flower fields are two completely different vibes, but conveniently close to each other. 🍜 Start the morning by visiting the Goguryeo cultural relics. The General’s Tomb and King Gwanggaeto Stele are both near the city, about a 10-minute taxi ride. These sites are rarely crowded. Standing before the massive stone tombs, you only hear the wind and birdsong. The vastness alone is worth the trip. For lunch, find a cold noodle shop in Ji’an city. The broth has ice chips and is refreshingly cool. ⚠️ The rapeseed flower fields are along the Yalu River in Ji’an. Late August is peak bloom, but the afternoon light is harsh. Enter from the south gate, walk part of the bird path to experience the “one man guards the pass” feeling, then take the cable car to the summit to save time and energy. 🏞️ The glass observation deck at the top is nothing special, but the view of the mountain carved like it was cut by a knife will make you speechless for a moment. Don’t rush after descending. The tofu feast in Jianmen Pass town is worth trying. Jianmen tofu is soft and flavorful. You can eat your fill for about 30 to 40 yuan per person. ⚠️ Monday mornings have the fewest visitors. After arriving at Guangyuan station by high-speed train, take bus 7 directly to Jianmen Pass. It’s five times cheaper and faster than a taxi. 04 Jining | Shandong Jining is a place where culture lovers and foodies can both find their niche. 🚄 Get off at Qufu East station in the morning and head straight to the Three Confucian Sites. It’s best to visit the Confucius Temple first, then the Confucius Mansion. At night, when the temperature drops to around 10 degrees, wrap yourself in a thick quilt and go outside to watch the stars. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. The awe you feel is unimaginable for city dwellers. 📍 During the day, drive along the grassland roads and stop anywhere on a grassy slope. Every photo you take with your phone will look like wallpaper. 🚗 Note that many areas in Uragai have no signal. Download offline maps before you go and make sure you have enough fuel. It’s perfect for solo travelers or small groups of friends. If you’re traveling with family, avoid going too deep because of the mosquitoes. 06 Xianyang | Shaanxi While some people fight the crowds in Xi’an, I prefer to spend two quiet days in Xianyang. 🏛️ The Wu Zetian’s wordless stele at Qianling Tomb stands there. Take a taxi to Yuanjia Village for lunch. 🍜 This Guanzhong impression site is a foodie’s paradise. Try the oil-splashed spicy biangbiang noodles, Fu tea, saozi noodles, and handmade yogurt. Just a bite of each is enough to fill you up. The whole village is built in an ancient style, but the lively atmosphere is real. In a teahouse converted from a pigsty, locals shout Qin opera. 07 Taiyuan | Shanxi Taiyuan is a seriously underrated provincial capital. 🚌 The Tianlongshan Grottoes are much less crowded than Yungang. In early September, the mountain road is lined with yellow smoke trees and maples. Although the leaves aren’t fully red yet, the sunlight filtering through the leaves already feels like autumn. Many of the grotto statues have been damaged, but the remaining faces have a compassion that quietly calms you. After visiting Tianlongshan in the morning, go to the Jinci Museum in the afternoon. The coiled dragon pillars and fish pond flying beams in the Holy Mother Hall are textbook examples. 🍜 In the evening, take a walk at Jinyang Lake Park. The lake breeze is strong, so bring a jacket. 📍 If you want noodles, try an old shop near Liuxiang. Their knife-cut noodles topped with minced meat and a clove of garlic are simple but addictive. 08 Jinzhou | Liaoning Jinzhou is not well known in the travel community, but Yiwulü Mountain is worth the trip. ⛰️ The mountain isn’t steep but has dense vegetation. Climbing in late August makes you sweat just right. The summit offers a wide view where you can see the ancient city of Beizhen. That undisturbed quietness is the ultimate weekend getaway experience. ⚠️ Don’t buy incense or paper money at the mountain gate. The temples on the mountain don’t actually allow burning. 🚄 It takes about 40 minutes by taxi from Jinzhou station to the foot of the mountain, costing just over 100 yuan round trip. After descending, head to Beizhen city for Jinzhou barbecue. Dry tofu rolls, lamb skewers, and grilled oil edges are must-tries. I've scoured the map and dug up a few places accessible by high-speed rail, where combined admission tickets are under 300 yuan, and you'll still need a blanket at night—some are even cold enough to require a jacket. 01 Xinzhou, Shanxi ⏰ You must arrive at Yanmenguan Pass before 3:00 PM. Enter from the South Gate, first go up to Zhenbian Temple. There's hardly anyone on the entire Great Wall, and the wind is strong enough to blow your hat off. The dilapidated beacon towers at the foot of the Great Wall are the real ancient relics; don't waste time on the newly built steps at the scenic area entrance. ⚠️ Do not drive into Wutaishan Mountain; traffic jams on summer weekends can last 2 to 3 hours. 🚄 Taking the high-speed train to Xinzhou West Station and then transferring to a scenic area bus is actually faster. The Yellow River water at Laoniuwan is as green as jade, and the evening light cast on the cliffs allows you to capture those unedited blue-toned moments. 🍜 In Xinzhou city, a bowl of wantuo from a street vendor costs 3 yuan. It has a texture like cold noodles with buckwheat, served with a spicy and sour sauce. You'll want to pack 3 more portions after eating. The full package—admission, sightseeing bus, and bamboo raft—costs less than 200 yuan, which is a reasonable price for a summer scenic area. 📍 For the coffin-raising performance, I recommend the 1:00 PM show; there are fewer people, and you can get a front-row spot. After the performance, don't rush off. Walk deeper along the river, and you'll find an untouched pebble beach where the water is ankle-deep. Stepping in feels cool and refreshing; you won't want to leave. 🍜 For spicy dishes in Yingtan, I recommend "Longhushan Fish Delicacy." During the day, you might complain, "Isn't this just another Dali?" But after 9:00 PM, when the bars along the Tuojiang River turn off their loud speakers and the lights become warm yellow, the entire town seems to shed its makeup, revealing its true charm. ⚠️ For guesthouses in Fenghuang, absolutely do not book a first-floor room by the river. There are so many mosquitoes at night they could throw a party, and it's noisy. I made that mistake once, staying on the second floor, and was woken up by the noise of tourists downstairs the next day. It's better to book a quiet corner away from the river view. 📍 Dehang Grand Canyon is the hidden gem of Xiangxi.
