2026 Yangshuo Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in April)

We originally didn't plan on visiting the Ruyi Peak Scenic Area. I figured it was just a cable car ride and an aerial walkway, and at ¥220 for a ticket, it seemed a bit pricey. Plus, it was a 30-minute cab ride. But our taxi driver highly recommended it, and since we didn't have any specific plans for our last morning, we decided to give it a go. Thank goodness we came! As the cable car ascended, we were surrounded by distant peaks that looked straight out of an ink painting, with beautiful idyllic countryside views right below us. It instantly felt worth the trip. This scenic area is mainly made up of three peaks and two valleys, connected by bright red suspension bridges, elevated walkways, and cliffside glass skywalks. Right after getting off the cable car, we spotted the suspension bridge hanging in the air from afar—it looked pretty thrilling! But once we stepped onto the bridge, we realized it was incredibly sturdy with absolutely no wobbling. Super impressive! 👍👍 From the bridge, you get a view of rolling, layered peaks that look just like a classic ink wash painting everywhere you look. You basically feel like you're walking through a traditional landscape masterpiece. It's awesome! The Yunding Observation Deck, which we reached next, offered a completely unobstructed 360-degree panoramic view of Yangshuo's lush mountains and forests. 🤩🤩 After that, we walked down the stairs to the gorgeous Forest Stroll walkway (an elevated boardwalk). With its winding, red-ribbon-like path against a backdrop of blue skies and white clouds, it’s absolutely perfect for taking Instagram-worthy photos. Finally, we walked onto the cliffside glass skywalk, which surprisingly wasn't as scary as I'd imagined! 😂😂 I originally thought we’d breeze through the tour in an hour and a half. But because I didn't expect it to be so beautiful, I took a ton of photos. I also didn't anticipate the sheer number of stairs! With my average stamina, we ended up stopping to rest quite a bit, making our return trip a little rushed (we had to catch an afternoon high-speed train). I highly recommend setting aside 2 to 3 hours for the visit. If you go during peak season when the cable car lines are longer, you should definitely plan for even more time. A few quick tips: 1. There are quite a lot of stairs going up and down, which might be a bit challenging for those with lower fitness levels, the elderly, and young children. 2. You have to wear shoe covers to enter both the Forest Stroll walkway and the glass skywalk. They are provided for free at the entrances. 3. Many hotels offer discount tickets for Yangshuo attractions, so remember to ask your hotel! We only paid ¥188 for our tickets. Combining them in one trip is tricky, as they are about 800 km apart. · -- Visual Differences Guilin and Yangshuo offer a horizontal landscape. Think karst peaks, winding rivers, rice paddies, and quaint villages. Everything is at ground level, easily accessible on foot or by scooter. It's soft, lush, and incredibly atmospheric. Zhangjiajie is all about vertical landscapes. Quartzite pillars tower up to 200 meters high, rising straight out of a dense forest. These exact mountains inspired the floating islands in "Avatar." The scale is completely different—you're either looking way up from the bottom or peering over the edge from a sheer cliff. · -- Choose Guilin if... You want to take things slow. Picture riding a scooter, cruising down the river, relaxing in a cafe with a view, and bamboo rafting. Nature is intertwined with daily life here; people live among the mountains, villages dot the landscape, and crops are grown in the fields. It's not just a protected reserve—it's a living, breathing community. It's also great for first-time visitors to China. The tourist infrastructure is solid, English is fairly widely spoken, and getting around is easy. · -- Choose Zhangjiajie if... You're after massive mountains and epic scale. The national park is absolutely massive—you'll need 3 to 4 days just to cover the main trails. This is where you'll find the world's longest glass-bottom bridge, spectacular cable cars, and viewing platforms towering above the clouds. It's a much more physically demanding destination. Expect lots of uphill climbs, lengthy hiking trails, and vast distances to cover within the park itself. · -- Practicalities Guilin is logistically easier. There are direct flights from many cities, and with Yangshuo and the Longji Rice Terraces nearby, putting together an itinerary is a breeze. Zhangjiajie is a bit harder to get to, with fewer direct flights, and navigating the park requires some solid planning. But if this is your dream destination, it's 100% worth the effort. The weather in both places can be unpredictable. In Zhangjiajie, heavy fog is normal and just part of the mystical scenery. In Guilin, the rainy season runs from March through June. · -- In Short Guilin is a landscape that people live in. Zhangjiajie is a landscape that overwhelms you with its sheer scale. If it's your first time in China, Guilin is the easier and more comfortable choice. If you've been before and crave something completely different, Zhangjiajie will give you a totally unique thrill. Both are absolutely worth visiting. They're just two very distinct adventures.

How to get to this cafe: 1. You can order a DiDi. 2. Rent an electric scooter in front of Yangshuo Station. If you're only visiting this cafe, renting it for half a day is enough, which cuts the rental cost in half. This cafe is quite spacious, and the coffee prices are very reasonable. Highly recommend checking out this coffee shop with a view of the Yangshuo mountains—the views are absolutely stunning 😍 Coffee prices are around 35 RMB. It took us an hour by taxi to get here from the Xingping Li River Scenic Area. The ride there was 115 RMB, and the trip back cost 157 RMB. But these views were totally worth it!
