Who’s still following the crowd at Lingyan Temple taking tourist photos? Who’s been scammed by “blessings from high monks”? Who’s eating bland vegetarian noodles for 25 RMB feeling emo? 🙅♀️ As a seasoned visitor returning to Lingyan Temple, I’ve tested and compiled this “Zen + Practical” two-day itinerary that unlocks the tranquility, secret spots, and stunning photo angles of this 1600-year-old ancient temple. Even beginners can shoot viral photos for social media—just follow this guide!
- Address: Lingyan Temple Scenic Area, Wande Street, Changqing District, Jinan City
- Tickets: Peak season 40 RMB/person, off-season 30 RMB/person, half price for students/seniors with ID (buy directly via the official WeChat account, don’t trust the 30 RMB guided tickets at the entrance! The path is steep and you might get fined for ticket evasion 🚫)
- Opening Hours: Peak season 8:00-17:00, off-season 8:30-16:30
- Transportation:
Self-drive: 1 hour from downtown Jinan, parking 10 RMB/day
Bus: Jichang Bus Line 2 (departing from Jinan Long-distance Bus West Station, 8 RMB/person, one bus per hour), avoid unlicensed taxis! They charge 50 RMB, a big rip-off
- Accommodation: Yueyue Farmhouse Courtyard at the scenic area entrance (around 50 RMB/person, clean and quiet, 5-minute walk to the mountain gate, the owner’s wood-fired stewed chicken is so delicious you’ll lick your plate 🍗)
Two-Day Itinerary (No detours! No rushing! Deep experience)
Ancient Architecture Tour + Photo Mania Day
08:30-09:00 Arrival + Costume Change
Rent Hanfu at the scenic area entrance (50 RMB/day including hairstyle, choose light gray or off-white to instantly blend with the ancient temple atmosphere, buy a 1 RMB bottle of mountain spring water—4 RMB cheaper than inside the scenic area), enter the park promptly at 8:30 (fewer people and better lighting!)
09:00-11:30 Thousand Buddha Hall + Imperial Stele Cliff: Touch a millennium of craftsmanship
Must-see at Thousand Buddha Hall: 40 Northern Song Dynasty Arhat statues, known as “the best sculptures in the country.” Between 9-10 AM, sunlight slants in, making the folds of their robes glow. Focus on the 28th statue, the “Meditating Arhat,” shoot the flowing ribbons from the right side inside the hall—the suspended sculpture technique is stunning!
Pitfall warning: Don’t use flash! It accelerates paint oxidation and staff will warn you, which is super awkward; don’t shoot the Buddha faces directly, stand outside on the stone steps with hands clasped and shoot their backs for full Zen vibes.
Imperial Stele Cliff Easter Egg: The real Qianlong Emperor’s calligraphy is not in the Imperial Stele Pavilion (which is a replica), but on the broken stele in the Sutra Depository! Though the characters are blurred, you can feel the ancient brush strokes up close.
11:30-13:00 Food Attack: Farmhouse dishes are forever classics
Don’t eat the 25 RMB bland vegetarian noodles inside the temple! Head to Yueyue Farmhouse Courtyard, 30 RMB per person to eat until full: lotus leaf egg pancakes are fragrant and flavorful, wood-fired stewed chicken with potatoes, the broth-soaked rice can fill two bowls. The owner even offers free tea, heartwarming to tears.
13:30-16:00 Bizi Pagoda + Tomb Pagoda Forest: Time travel to Tang and Song dynasties
Bizi Pagoda: The nine-story pagoda is a photo magnet! Between 3-4 PM, the sunset lights up the tower, making the brick carvings super clear. Shoot the full view from the left side of the square in front of the pagoda, then circle behind to find a puddle for a “sky mirror” reflection. Shoot from a low angle under the pagoda, gently touching the tower (don’t press hard! Protect cultural relics), the person and ancient pagoda in one frame tell a story.
Tomb Pagoda Forest: 167 tomb pagodas from Tang to Qing dynasties, the second largest tomb pagoda group in China! Walk the central stone path to shoot the layered stone pagodas. Early morning between 7-8 AM when the mist lingers, it looks like an ink painting 🖌️. Take a photo with the Tang Dynasty “Huichong Pagoda,” wearing Hanfu, lifting your skirt and smiling back, like a noble lady stepping out of an ancient painting.
16:00-17:00 Cypress Embrace Locust + Bell and Drum Tower: Healing moments
Cypress Embrace Locust: The millennium-old strange tree is perfect for photos! The cypress “embraces” the locust tree, their roots entwined like an inseparable hug. At noon, sunlight filters through, casting dancing shadows. Spread your arms to hug the trunk, the atmosphere is amazing.
Bell and Drum Tower: The vermilion walls provide a high-end Chinese aesthetic background. Use light and shadow to shoot your profile, plain clothes contrast with the red wall, instantly creating a masterpiece.
17:30 Return and Rest: Farmhouse stay, star gazing at night is super romantic
Secret Hiking + Zen Experience
07:30-09:00 Ganlu Spring + Baiyun Cave: Off-the-beaten-path secret spots
Start along the mountain trail, 20 minutes to Ganlu Spring, the spring water near Qianlong’s inscription is crystal clear. Bring tea leaves to brew a cup, the tea aroma mixed with the scent of grass and wood 🍵.
Baiyun Cave hides Tang Dynasty cliff Buddha statues, very few people! The morning light is soft, shoot the Buddha with ginkgo trees in the frame, full Zen vibes.
- Easter Egg: Cross Shuangjing Bridge, walk 20 minutes along mossy stone steps to find the Ming Dynasty high monk’s meditation cave. The four characters “Ink Image Seeking Outside” inside the cave are stunning. Outside, the wild bamboo forest is a secret spot favored by local photographers.
09:30-11:00 One Line Sky + Zhuoxi Spring: Light hiking fun
One Line Sky: Two cliffs flank you, with only a thin strip of sky above. Shoot your back for a great atmosphere; rest by Zhuoxi Spring, listen to the flowing water, healing all fatigue.
- Outfit tip: Plain cotton-linen or new Chinese style fits best, bright red or purple is too jarring. Light gray and cloth shoes blend perfectly with the ancient temple vibe.
11:30-12:30 Last Meal: Wild vegetable buns to finish
Head back to the farmhouse for wild vegetable buns, thin skin and full filling, paired with millet porridge, healthy and satisfying, 10 RMB to eat until full.
13:00-14:00 Souvenirs + Return
Buy walnut crisps for 10 RMB/bag as souvenirs, much better deal than overpriced specialty products inside the scenic area! Leisurely return, ending a healing two-day trip.
Top Photo Spots Collection (Follow these for guaranteed great shots!)
1. Under the Great Hero Hall: Shoot upward at the ginkgo canopy, capture falling leaves for dynamic golden dome effect.
2. Southwest side of Dizang Hall: Frame with Bizi Pagoda, clever composition maximizes ancient architecture beauty.
3. Shengjing Gate: Use the red wall as paper, the characters “Lingyan” as a stamp, stand still in plain clothes for a high-end Chinese look.
4. Steps outside Thousand Buddha Hall: Vermilion door frames the Buddha statues inside, blending reality and illusion like time travel.
5. Tomb Pagoda Forest Path: Walk the stone path in Hanfu, look back smiling with a round fan covering half your face, full of mystery.
Stepping on the threshold = great disrespect! Men step left, women right, lift your foot to cross, don’t drag on the threshold 🙏 (Being reminded by monks is super awkward)
Monks inside the temple won’t actively solicit customers! If you encounter “blessings to ward off disasters,” run immediately to avoid being scammed 💰
Avoid weekends! Too many tour groups and study teams. For empty shots, choose Wednesday or Thursday, arrive at 8 AM.
Gear: Folding stool (to sit while waiting for sunset) + small fan (cool down in summer) + power bank (photos drain battery fast)
Hidden Perk: On the 1st and 15th of each lunar month, there is an early morning class (starts at 6 AM). Contact the guest hall in advance to register and experience bell ringing and sutra chanting, full of ritual atmosphere.
The beauty of Lingyan Temple is hidden in the morning mist, afternoon light, and thousand-year-old brick houses. There is no noise here, only the sound of Buddhist chants and the wind. The healing during secret hikes, the surprise when shooting photos, and the satisfaction of eating farmhouse dishes are the most precious meanings of travel. May you find your own peaceful moments in this ancient temple with this guide 🌿
