Though few know of it, it exudes an air of mystery that made me drive over 400 kilometers from Beijing to get here. There are two legends about the Python Immortal Cave. One says a Taoist priest surnamed Wang was drawn by the feng shui of this location and dug a cave here to cultivate, which was essentially just to make it convenient for himself to rob tombs and dig for treasure, after all, Shanxi has many ancient tombs. The other, passed down by villagers, says a giant python coiled here to cultivate, protecting the fields with its body and the village with its spiritual energy, so the villagers built a temple to worship it. I arrived at this immortal site at noon and still had the place to myself. Even the cultural relic protection officer wasn't there, probably taking a nap. The main archway was completed in the fifth year of the Xianfeng reign. It features four pillars and three gateways with a double-eaved, hip-and-gable roof. The entire structure is covered in relief carvings so dense it gives you goosebumps—depictions of the Twenty-four Filial Exemplars, promotions and titles, lotus cranes, and auspicious clouds.
