Yumen travel guide and discussion

Fanfan: Don't get it, but I'm cooperating

Speeding along the Gobi highway in Jiuquan, I finally stood before the colorful rock walls of Yumen Moshan. At that moment, I suddenly understood what the roar of the earth meant. Deep in the Gobi Desert on the west side of the Qilian Mountains, I discovered this wild Danxia secret spot that only opened in 2024—Yumen Moshan. Standing beneath the colorful rock walls, I was speechless. Layers of purple-red, ochre-yellow, and blue-gray sandstone were stacked up, like a 450-million-year geological epic laid out right before my eyes. The sound of the wind whistling through the rock crevices was like the ancient earth whispering in my ear. When I climbed up to look down, I got goosebumps. The textures in the gullies spread along the mountain contours, more stunning than any abstract painting—a visual impact that crowded, mature tourist attractions just can't compare to. This isn't just ordinary Danxia; it's an open-air geological museum that packs in volcanic craters, wave valleys, and canyon wonders. Even the wind-carved stones you pick up on the road are little fragments the earth has been saving for hundreds of millions of years. 📸 Essential travel tips · Standard passenger cars can easily drive along the main road, but you must use a 4WD vehicle if you want to venture deep into the volcanic craters and the southern edge of the wave valleys · Drive 9 km south on the main road through Hongliu Gorge to face the Qilian Mountains directly for an incredible view · The east-west gravel roads are only recommended for 4WD vehicles. Head east to find the southern edge of the Danxia, or west to explore the volcanic craters—the best scenery is hidden along this route · There is no signal in most areas, so download offline maps in advance and do not venture into remote areas alone

Daqing, a city of a thousand lakes and wetlands located in the heart of the Songnen Plain, owes its birth and prosperity to oil. Therefore, the spokesperson for oil workers—"Iron Man" Wang Jinxi—is also the city's most famous symbol. The Iron Man Wang Jinxi Memorial Hall is located in the Ranghulu District of Daqing and is a national first-class museum. This dedicated memorial hall, with the "Iron Man spirit" as its core theme, features a massive granite statue of Wang Jinxi in the square in front of the museum. He stands tall, clutching a brake handle, his gaze firmly fixed on the black earth beneath his feet. 📍From the northwest to the northeast: The Iron Man's fiery life Wang Jinxi was born into a poor farming family in Yumen, Gansu. As a teenager, he worked as a child laborer at the old Yumen Oilfield, where years of hardship forged his resilient and unyielding character. After the founding of New China, he became one of the first generation of drilling workers. In 1960, when the Daqing oil campaign began, he answered the call of the nation, leading his team from the great Northwest to the great Northeast, shouting the vow: "I would rather live 20 years less to do whatever it takes to secure this major oilfield." Facing equipment shortages, he led workers to transport drilling rigs by hand and shoulder, and broke ice to carry water to ensure drilling could start. At a critical moment, ignoring his leg injury, he jumped into the mud pit, using his body to stir the mud and control the blowout. The name "Iron Man" spread across the country. Those stories of passionate struggle and overcoming difficulties are all detailed in the exhibition hall. 📍Detailed exhibition content: The museum lobby features the massive bronze sculpture group "Spirit of Oil," which is also the cover image. Workers wearing aluminum helmets stride forward, with Wang Jinxi at the very front of the group, as if a surging torrent is rushing toward you. The exhibition hall displays a wide variety of oil extraction tools used by the Iron Man, including actual items like the brake handle, aluminum helmet, and pliers he used. Different exhibition areas also use scene restorations, old photos, and video materials to fully connect his entire journey from a poor teenager to an oil hero, authentically restoring that era of harsh conditions but boundless enthusiasm and hard work. 📍The spiritual roots of the oil city: Daqing was born and flourished because of oil. This once vast wilderness rose rapidly into a modern industrial city due to the clarion call of the oil campaign. From the first oil well to gush oil to decades of stable production today, the Daqing Oilfield has produced billions of tons of crude oil, providing the most solid energy support for the industrial development of New China. Today, on the vast plains surrounding the memorial hall, countless pumpjacks still rise and fall day after day. You can personally feel the unique industrial charm of this oil city, living side-by-side with endless grasslands and scattered wetland ponds, all of which have become the scenery of this new city.

Laojunmiao and the Oilfield Museum are full of history, and Chijinxia is great for Gobi scenery. · Jinta Attractions: Ecological scenery. The Jinta Poplar Forest is stunning in autumn, and the Desert Wetland is very soothing. · Jiuquan City: Urban leisure. Learn history at Jiuquan Park and the museum, and take retro photos at the Drum Tower. · Aksai Attractions: Western regions style. The Petroleum Town is a popular social media spot, and Sugan Lake looks like a highland sapphire. · Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center: Dongfeng Space City. About 220 km from the city, requires a separate half-day to 1 full day. 🏨 Accommodation Recommendations · Day 1: Stay in Jiuquan City for convenient transport and plenty of dining options. · Day 2/Day 3: Stay in Dunhuang City. I recommend the area near Shazhou Night Market for convenient dining and entertainment at night. · Yumen/Aksai: If taking the West Line or Yumen Line, choose local hotels based on your itinerary, or head straight to Dunhuang. 🍜 Food Recommendations The beef and lamb in the Great Northwest are amazing! Must-try: Dunhuang donkey meat yellow noodles, apricot skin tea 🥤, roasted whole lamb 🍖, and hand-grabbed lamb! Also, try Northwest specialties like cuoyuzi (rubbed noodles) and paozhangmian (firecracker noodles). Yumen's fried dough sticks and Jiuquan's huguo (stewed pot) are also worth a try! 📷 Photography Tips · Mingsha Mountain: Wear a red dress for epic desert photos. It's super romantic to photograph the starry sky and Milky Way at night! · Mogao Caves: Take a photo in front of the Nine-Story Building. Indoor photography is prohibited. · Yadan: Capture silhouettes of the "Devil's City" at sunset for a sci-fi vibe. · Yumenguan Pass: Capture the desolate beauty of the "Spring breeze never crosses Yumenguan" at the site. · Jinta Poplar Forest: Wear light-colored clothing in autumn to capture reflections. · Petroleum Town: Wear wasteland-style or cowboy-style outfits for super cool photos! 💡 Super Practical Tips 1. The climate in Jiuquan is dry with large temperature differences between day and night. Sunscreen, sunglasses, moisturizer, and a thick jacket are must-haves! 🧴🕶️ 2. Attractions in Dunhuang are scattered. I recommend chartering a car or joining a tour for a stress-free experience. 3. Mogao Caves tickets must be booked 30 days in advance! Class A tickets include 8 caves—great value! 4. Enter Mingsha Mountain after 5:00 PM to avoid the intense sun. 5. Reserve half a day for Yumen attractions, and plan a separate half-day for the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. ⚠️ Pitfall Avoidance · Avoid scams: Vendors at the Dunhuang Night Market and scenic spots may sell low-quality camel wool at high prices. Don't buy it! · Chartering a car: Agree on the price in advance to avoid hidden costs. · Drinking water: The Northwest is dry, so drink plenty of water. Don't wait until you're thirsty. · Space City: You need to register and complete procedures in advance to visit Dongfeng Space City. Don't just show up! 🔥 Additional Notes If you have more time, Sugan Lake and the Petroleum Town in Aksai are also worth visiting! Visiting the Jinta Poplar Forest in autumn is definitely worth the trip. The scenery of the Northwest needs to be savored slowly; I recommend planning for 4–5 days! See you in the comments if you have any questions! Wishing everyone a breathtaking and happy trip to Jiuquan! ✨

Two hearts drawing closer~

Located at No. 2 Zhongyuan Road, Ranghulu District, Daqing (near Iron Man Square), the Iron Man Wang Jinxi Memorial Hall is China’s very first memorial dedicated to the working class. It’s an absolute must-visit for anyone looking for that perfect "check-in" shot! 🤩 The architecture is incredibly symbolic—the building stands 47 meters tall with 47 steps leading up, representing the 47 legendary years of Wang Jinxi’s life ✨. From above, the structure forms the Chinese character "工" (Work/Industry), while from the side, it looks like the character "人" (Person). Topped off with a giant drill bit design, the industrial vibes are off the charts 😎. Inside, the exhibits focus on "Patriotism, Entrepreneurship, Realism, and Dedication" (the core of the Daqing and Iron Man Spirits). With a wealth of rare photos, original manuscripts, historical artifacts, and documentaries, you get a deep dive into the grit and struggle of Wang Jinxi and the Daqing Oilfield. It’s truly inspiring to see how much one worker can achieve! 💪 Plus, as a National AAAA-level tourist attraction and a National First-Class Museum, this place is officially recognized for its significance. Definitely a spot to add to your bucket list 📸. Address: No. 2 Zhongyuan Road, Ranghulu District, Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province (near Iron Man Square). Pro-Tip: Capture a panoramic shot of the "工"-shaped building—it’s absolutely breathtaking!

First, choose the number of days based on "grotto depth, desert ratio, and whether you want to shoot starry skies": 3 days covers the highlights of Dunhuang and Guazhou; 4 days adds the Yumenguan Pass—Han Great Wall and more ruins; 5 days gives you enough leeway to fit in the Yadan sunset and autumn night photography. Private car charters are better for couples and photographers, while small group tours are more worry-free, but be sure to ask if they include West Line transfers, waiting times, and alternative spots for sandstorm days. The 3-day Essential Art Route is suitable for first-timers to the Hexi Corridor who want to focus on grottoes and art landmarks. After arriving in Dunhuang, set aside half a day to organize your gear, with the Mogao Caves as the core. On the second day, visit Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake, then head to the Guazhou public art landmarks. On the third day, do some follow-up shooting in Guazhou based on wind conditions, or return to Dunhuang to wrap up. The itinerary is short, so don't force a visit to Yadan. The 4-day Desert Immersion Route is for cultural travelers and those willing to travel a bit further on the West Line. After the Dunhuang grottoes, set aside a full block of time for the Yulin Caves or a similar grotto experience, then split your time between the Guazhou art landmarks and Suoyang City. Finally, arrange for the Yumenguan Pass—Han Great Wall. The ruins area has strong sun exposure and little shade, so staying hydrated and protected from the sun in the car is more important than adding another stop. The 5-day Starry Sky Slow Photography Route is for photographers who bring tripods and are willing to wait for the light. Schedule Yadan around sunset, visit Guazhou art spots during the day when the wind is calmer, and use the old Yumen industrial heritage sites to round out the cultural experience. At night, check the weather before deciding whether to head out for star photography. Cloud cover, wind speed, and moon phases will all affect the results, so leaving an extra night is more reliable than promising a "guaranteed Milky Way." Confirm grotto reservations before making payments or booking vehicles. Visit methods and current quotas for the Mogao Caves, Yulin Caves, etc., are subject to official channels. Do not lock in non-refundable long-distance car bookings until your reservations are confirmed. Follow on-site rules when entering the caves; do not base your photography plans on shooting inside the caves. If someone in your group values mural details more, leave time for the guided tour and rest. Where to stay depends on your priorities: Staying in downtown Dunhuang is the most convenient for a 3-day trip, making it easier to resupply and make last-minute adjustments. For 4–5-day trips, you can spend one night in Guazhou or the middle section of the route, but confirm the accommodation's heating, hot water, and vehicle parking conditions. The Yumen section is more of a supplementary narrative; don't sacrifice time at the grottoes or sunset spots just to "stay in all three cities." From September–November, it can still be sunny during the day, but temperatures drop significantly at night, and it will feel even colder in the Gobi and Yadan areas. A thin down jacket or fleece, windbreaker, sun hat, lip balm, and goggles are all worth keeping in the car. On sandstorm days, swap long dune treks or Yadan hikes for indoor exhibits, short stops at ruins, or urban cultural spots. Use dust covers for your lenses and keep vehicles on designated roads. For safety, don't just rely on maps to estimate your stamina on the West Line: the areas between attractions are vast, and supply points are not continuous. Before booking a car, confirm that the driver is familiar with road conditions, vehicle status, and emergency contacts. When shooting, stick to trails and viewing areas, and do not enter uninhabited areas alone at night. Couples wanting a relaxed pace should choose 4 days; photographers should choose 5 days. If you only have 3 days, keep the theme focused on Dunhuang grottoes + Guazhou art.

📍Location: Yumen Pass Ruins Standing on the Gobi wilderness of Yumen Pass, I finally understood the weight of that poem from my textbooks🌬️ A thousand years of wind and sand have weathered the walls of the mighty pass. Once a bustling Silk Road gateway, now only a remnant of rammed earth remains, standing quietly amidst the vast Gobi Desert. Han flags flutter in the wind, the wilderness is vast, and the sunset glow covers the entire wasteland. It feels as if I can hear the camel bells from a thousand years ago, the hardships of the frontier soldiers, the journey of the westward travelers, all settled into this desolate land. "The Yellow River rises far into the white clouds, a lonely city stands among ten thousand mountains. Why should the Qiang flute complain about the willow trees? The spring breeze does not cross Yumen Pass." Twenty-eight short characters in a book, but arriving in person, I finally understand the loneliness and grandeur between the lines. There is no magnificent pass as imagined, only broken walls and ruins, the wilderness and the long wind. This is Yumen Pass. 📝Travel tips ▪️Location: West of Dunhuang, far from the city center; self-driving or chartered car is recommended ▪️Best time to visit: At sunset, when the evening glow creates an incredible atmosphere ▪️The Gobi Desert has a large temperature difference between day and night; be sure to bring windproof and sun-protective clothing

Jiayuguan is located at the western end of the Hexi Corridor, bordered by Jiuquan to the east, Yumen to the west, the Qilian Mountains to the south, and Heishan to the north. It is a key transportation hub on the ancient Silk Road. The most famous attraction in Jiayuguan is the city wall. As someone who has climbed the wall many times, it holds less appeal for me. Tickets to Jiayuguan Pass are not cheap, so I chose the free viewing spots recommended online. The pass mainly served for defense and trade. Defense consolidated the border, while trade was another major mission. Travelers on the Silk Road had to pass through again to pay taxes, and those taxes sustained the defenses and stimulated the economy. This is the same in ancient and modern times. National defense and economic development are always important. Jiayuguan is best known for its roast meat. At night I went to Datang Food Street for barbecue and also ordered a peppery chicken. The barbecue did not amaze me, and the peppery chicken I had been looking forward to was a disappointment — it didn’t taste like Xinjiang-style peppery chicken. If it’s your first time at Moshang, don’t wander around blindly. Save this all-inclusive guide to avoid 90% of the common pitfalls! 1. Reservation method Online reservations are not available. You must first navigate to the "Yumen Light Industrial Experience Hall" and register your vehicle on-site with your ID. The fee is 20 yuan per person. Entry stops at 5 PM. Seniors and special groups must sign a waiver. Walk-in visitors without registration are not accepted. 2. Transportation route Suitable only for self-driving or city charter vehicles. From Yumen city, take the G30 Expressway and exit at Chijin, then drive 12 km to the park entrance. The last section is all gravel and washboard road. High-clearance SUVs are preferred. Regular sedans should drive slowly to avoid scraping. Electric vehicles are not recommended. 3. Must-see order (no backtracking) Entrance registration → Colorful Danxia viewing platform → Black and white wave valley boardwalk → Petrified wood fossil group → Sister volcanic craters. The whole trip takes 4–5 hours. It’s recommended to enter at 3 PM. The sunset lighting on the rock layers is especially photogenic. 4. Key precautions There are no shops, restrooms, or cell signal throughout the park. Download offline maps in advance and bring enough drinking water and snacks. The Gobi UV rays are very strong, so sunscreen, sunglasses, and windproof face masks are essential. Strictly avoid leaving the main path or climbing rocks to protect the billion-year-old geological relics. Flash floods are common in rain; evacuate immediately if there is heavy rain. 5. FAQs Q: Can I fly a drone? A: Yes, but there is no signal. Flying at low altitude is more stable. Q: Is it suitable for solo travel? A: Not recommended. Travel with others if possible. Without signal, it’s hard to get help in an emergency. Anyone planning to go soon? Will you self-drive or charter a vehicle?

Yangguan is 75 km southwest of Dunhuang, 50 RMB ticket, paired mentally with Yumen but warmer in tone—the western gate faces the Lop Nur direction, and the sunset hits the reconstructed gate’s west face at 6:10 PM in October.I came by e-bike from Dunhuang (rental 80 RMB/day, 4 hours round trip, not recommended in wind over 5 Beaufort—I fought gusts both ways). The site is 60% reconstruction, 40% real Han-era trench lines and tile scatter you can walk freely. The “Western Gate” is a timber-frame arch on the old road; sit on the south bastion (no fence, don’t lean on the rebuild) and watch the light die over the Danghe alluvial fan. No cafés, one water machine at the lot (QR only, 3 RMB, often empty—carry your own). Mistake: doing the 18:00 “Silk Road costume show” for 98 RMB—it is ten people in polyester robes and a speaker. Another: driving the G215 back at full dark without high beams set—camels and shepherds cross unsignposted. Would you accept a partial reconstruction for the sake of standing where the Tang poets said “west of Yangguan no old friend,” or does the rebuild kill the bucket-list feel for you?

Yumen Pass (Jade Gate Pass) is 90 km northwest of Dunhuang, 40 RMB combined ticket with the Han Great Wall segments and Hecang Barracks, bus from Dunhuang 8:30 AM (return 4 PM, 60 RMB round trip, book via the Dunhuang tourist busWeChat account a day ahead).I rented a car instead—200 RMB/day plus 0.6 RMB/km, easier than the bus’s rigid clock. The causeway is a 1.8 km raised tamped-earth path between two dried lake beds (Gobi not sand—different gear, no shoe covers needed, but wind carries grit). At 3 PM the westerly hits 7 on the Beaufort scale; I wore a cycling buff and still tasted dust. The pass itself is a small square rampart, the wind-erosion scallops on its west face are the real subject—shoot them at 4:30 PM side-light. No shade, no water sold past the lot, carry 2 L. Drone ban is real here (military buffer 40 km north), rangers check at the gate. Payment: 40 RMB cash or QR, foreign card no. Common error: combining Yumen and Yangguan same afternoon—too far, you get 20 minutes at each and miss the light. Another: touching the wall—fine and pointless, the loess crumbles on contact. Would you rather stand alone on the causeway at 5 PM with the wind carving your jacket, or skip Yumen and give Yangguan the full dusk?

When choosing a travel route where culture and history intertwine, I set my sights on this place—the Hexi Corridor. This ancient path between the Qilian Mountains and the desert holds the cultural roots of Chinese civilization and showcases the most magnificent landscapes of northwest China. This time, we will start from Lanzhou, pass through Zhangye, Jiayuguan, and Dunhuang, and spend seven days completing this westward journey spanning a thousand years. As the only provincial capital city with the Yellow River running through it, Lanzhou combines the boldness of the northwest with the warmth of everyday life. So, when in Lanzhou, you can’t miss a bowl of authentic Lanzhou beef noodles. The steaming broth, chewy and smooth noodles, and a spoonful of fragrant chili oil create a rich and savory taste with every bite. Take a leisurely walk across the century-old Zhongshan Bridge and watch the Yellow River rush by. Climb White Pagoda Mountain to overlook the vast flow of the Yellow River. Don’t miss the chance to ride a sheepskin raft, drifting slowly along the river and feeling the mighty spirit of the Yellow River mother. Leaving Lanzhou, on the second day, we take the high-speed train from Lanzhou West Station to Zhangye, 500 kilometers away. Zhangye means “Zhang’s arm reaching out,” directly connecting to the Western Regions. The train moves forward, the scenery outside the window constantly changing, but the distant Qilian Mountains stretch endlessly. This majestic mountain range spanning the vast land silently nurtures the Hexi region. Upon arriving in Zhangye, we met our driver and headed straight to the long-awaited colorful Danxia landform. If the northwest is a spilled palette, then the colorful Danxia is its masterpiece. Over hundreds of millions of years, geological changes, red sandstone deposits, crust uplift, and long-term weathering have created layers of folded textures in this land. Reds, warm yellows, and dark oranges intertwine, glowing brilliantly under the sunlight. Walking on the viewing platform, gazing at this geological wonder, you can’t help but marvel at nature’s craftsmanship. On the third day, we drove to the Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon. Who would have thought the shuttle bus still had to travel 17 kilometers before reaching the canyon entrance? Unlike the colorful Danxia, this place has a unique wildness of the northwest. Deep canyons, steep cliffs, and oddly shaped rocks scattered around. Looking out, the vast Gobi Desert stretches endlessly with ravines crisscrossing, presenting a vast and majestic scene. This place, with neither a flat mountain nor a lake, holds a special magic that lingers in your memory. Every journey has its regrets, giving me a reason for the next trip. This time, we only made a brief stop at Jiayuguan without lingering. But even a quick glance reveals the mighty cantilevered Great Wall clinging to the cliffs and the proud First Pier standing tall in the wilderness. The lonely fortress reflects the vast desert, and the long wind sweeps across the stronghold. This fleeting glimpse made me decide to return to this land again. After traveling 1,100 kilometers from Lanzhou, we finally reached the last stop of the trip—Shazhou Dunhuang. Dun means great, and Huang means magnificent. This brilliant pearl on the ancient Silk Road has endured thousands of years and still shines uniquely deep in the desert. Entering Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring, your eyes meet rolling yellow sand and a spring that has never dried up for a thousand years, showing a rare softness in the desert. Above the sand, the sound of camel bells drifts in the wind, and long camel caravans slowly traverse the desert, as if retracing the Silk Road merchants’ westward journey from a thousand years ago. At this moment, the ancient poem finally makes sense: “The desert’s lone smoke rises straight, the long river’s setting sun is round.” Time passes, and the once prosperous Yangguan has long fallen silent. Today, only low beacon towers quietly stand in the vast Gobi Desert. Looking back at history, Huo Qubing defeated the Xiongnu in the north, establishing four commanderies and securing two passes. Zhang Qian’s two missions to the Western Regions “pierced the void” and opened the Silk Road chapter. Since then, this Silk Road allowed countless caravans, travelers, and border soldiers to head west from here, leaving endless stories and legends on this land. Poet Wang Wei wrote the timeless verse “I urge you to drink another cup of wine; west of Yangguan, no old friends remain.” One poem, one pass, captures the long and desolate spirit of the westward journey. In the Gobi no-man’s land 158 kilometers from Dunhuang city lies a secret place where one foot steps into two worlds—the Yadan Devil City. Over time, the earth’s crust slowly rose, lakes dried up, and lakebeds were exposed. For millions of years, fierce winds and flowing water have eroded and polished the land day and night, carrying away fine sand and leaving behind hard ridges, ultimately sculpting this endlessly varied and vast wind-eroded Yadan wonder. In these seven days, we traveled from the Yellow River’s edge to the Gobi Desert, from everyday life to millennia of civilization. Heading west, we encountered one unforgettable moment after another. This magnificent and historic ancient path, once seen, is never forgotten.

Salt Lake Bay: A White Carpet Deep in the Qilian Mountains, Even the Wind Smells of Salt As the car rolled over the last stretch of gravel road, the dashboard warning lights started flashing. Our guide, Batulele, patted my shoulder with a laugh: "Don't worry, it's just from the salt particles; all the cars here are like that." Pushing open the car door, my eyes were suddenly blinded by the glare—the salt lake before me looked like an endless white carpet, the patterns on the salt crust shimmering like diamonds in the sunlight. The shadows of the distant Qilian Mountains fell on this "carpet," as if edged with silver. "Much wilder than Chaka Salt Lake, right?" Batulele bent down and picked up a salt crystal, so clear you could see your reflection. "This is sugar from the Qilian Mountains; you can taste the salty-sweet flavor." Hidden in the Gobi Desert bordering Gansu and Qinghai, a five-hour drive from Jiuquan, there's no entrance fee, but only a select few are allowed in each day; 99% of people have never even heard of it. Black-necked cranes flap their wings in the wetlands, smoke from yurts swirls in the clouds, and even the wind carries a crisp, salty scent, as if the cleanliness of the entire plateau has been infused into the air. 🌅 The salt lake changes its appearance, from white to pinkish-orange. The patterns on the salt crust are the fingerprints of the earth. At midday, the salt lake is at its most "straightforward," dazzlingly white, with salt crusts overlapping each other like frozen waves. Squatting down to look closely, the salt grains are as fine as sugar, and in one salt crystal is a withered blade of grass—Baturele says it's "left by last year's wind." A girl wearing sunglasses twirls on the salt crust; wherever her skirt sweeps, salt powder falls in a flurry, "like walking on broken glass, soft and brittle." A layer of white residue clings to the soles of her shoes; she says it forms with every step, "enough to pickle vegetables later." The setting sun dyes the salt lake like candied fruit. The evening light suddenly softened, the white salt flats slowly turning pinkish-orange, and the distant snow-capped mountains blushed as well. Batulerle said this was "the salt lake removing its makeup," adding, "By day it's a stubborn Mongolian man, by night it becomes a girl in a red dress." We sat on the salt blocks, watching the cloud shadows run across the "red carpet." In the instant a cloud drifted by, a double rainbow appeared on the lake's surface, half in the salt, half in the sky. A bar-headed goose flew past beneath the rainbow, its wings creating a misty spray of salt dust. 🦩 The wetland's inhabitants are more like its owners than its tourists. The black-necked cranes' homes are by the puddles. The wetlands beside the salt lake are like a shattered mirror; in the puddles, large and small, you can always spot black-necked cranes—red heads, black wings—standing motionless in the water, suddenly stretching their necks to snatch a fish, their movements as swift as lightning. Batu Lele wouldn't let us get too close, "They're timid. Last year, a pair of cranes abandoned their eggs because someone used a flash." We held our telephoto lenses at a distance, photographing them standing side-by-side in the water, their reflections shimmering on the surface like a wet ink painting. The milk tea in the yurt smelled of the highlands. We rested at noon at the home of herdsman Dawa. Her yurt was pitched right by the wetlands, with salted mutton drying outside. The copper kettle bubbled over the fire, the aroma of milk tea mixed with the salt wafting out. As Dawa poured tea for us, her silver bracelet jingled in the sunlight. "This tea needs fried rice and milk curd; it warms you up the more you drink it." Her son rode a pony herding sheep in the distance, the flock white as grains of salt scattered on the green grass, facing the distant white salt lake. ⚠ The rules here are the rules of the highlands. Reservations are the ticket, respect is the pass. Salt Lake Bay is a protected area, and reservations must be made in advance through the "Subei Culture and Tourism" WeChat official account (limited to 50 people per day). Private cars are not allowed in the core area; visitors must transfer to the reserve's off-road vehicles (200 yuan per person). Batulele explained that this is to "give the grass and birds a breather," adding, "Ten years ago, cars could enter freely, and the wetlands were barren; only now are they slowly recovering." Don't step carelessly; there are "traps" beneath the salt crust. What looks like a solid salt crust might be hollow underneath; one wrong step and you'll sink in. "Last year, a photographer, trying to photograph cranes, sank up to his knees, and the salt crystals tore his pants." Follow the guide's footsteps, keeping your feet flat, "like bowing to the salt crust." As we left, Dawa packed us bags of salt crystals. Driving far away, looking back, the salt lake resembled a giant piece of white jade in the twilight, the wetland puddles shimmering with scattered light, and the lights of the yurts shining like stars fallen onto the grassland. Suddenly I understand why this place is so good—few people, not because it's bad, but because it's so precious, you have to take your time to see it, and walk slowly. Would you be willing to spend 5 hours driving to such a hidden gem? Or, what's the wildest nature you've ever seen? Let's chat in the comments! Practical Guide · Transportation: 5 hours by car from Jiuquan (take the Jingxin Expressway, then S215, navigate to "Yanchiwan National Nature Reserve," the last 50 kilometers are unpaved, requiring an SUV; transfer to an official off-road vehicle at the reserve entrance to enter the core area); a round-trip taxi from Subei County costs about 400 yuan, you need to contact them in advance (there are reputable travel agencies in the county that can help with reservations). · Costs: Reservations are free; off-road vehicle at the reserve costs 200 yuan per person; a herder's family experience (milk tea + simple meal) costs 50 yuan per person; no other fees. · Accommodation: Guesthouses in Yanchiwan Township cost 150-200 RMB/night (simple conditions, hot water available); hotels in Subei County cost 100-180 RMB/night (recommended: "Snow Mountain Hotel," where you can wash away the salt dust). · Must-Do List: 1. Backlit Salt Flat Photography: Stand on the salt flats at dusk, letting the sunset shine from behind. Hold up a salt crystal; sunlight refracts through the crystal, creating light spots against a backdrop of pinkish-orange salt lake and snow-capped mountains—a truly atmospheric experience. 2. Black-necked Crane Telephoto Lens: At the wetland birdwatching spot, use a telephoto lens to capture the moment black-necked cranes forage in the puddles, blurring the green grass in the background to highlight the agility of these "highland spirits" (turn off the flash!). 3. Yurt Smoke: Photograph Dawa's yurt in the early morning, with smoke rising from the chimney and sheep just leaving their pen. The distant salt lake and snow-capped mountains are framed together. You can help carry firewood to create a sense of "immersion." - Helpful reminders: Best time to visit: June to October (bird watching + suitable weather); strong ultraviolet radiation at high altitudes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are essential; salt particles can damage shoes, so wear old sneakers; respect the customs of the herders, take off your shoes before entering a yurt, and do not touch children's heads without permission; all trash must be taken with you, as the salt flats cannot degrade anything.

Leaving Guazhou for Yumen and crossing the 800-li Moheyanqi desert, Xuanzang slipped through the fingers of death. When he stepped into Kucha (present-day Aksu), the color of the road beneath his feet suddenly changed from yellow-brown to fresh green. This was not just a shift in the landscape but a deeply meaningful mid-journey pause in Xuanzang’s westward pilgrimage. 1. Life springs from desolation: the rule of growth fueled by barrenness Aksu is a shining gem on the northern edge of the Tarim Basin. Thanks to the snowmelt from the Tianshan Mountains, this area is rich in water and vegetation, creating a stark contrast to the barren desert before it. In the Great Tang Records on the Western Regions, Xuanzang detailed the prosperity here. This was not a simple change of scenery but a physical “buffer zone.” Nature created this space for travelers to step away from extreme survival anxiety and reconnect with the rhythm of life. This was the “effort” phase on the westward journey, a time for the body to recover. 2. Balanced effort and rest: gathering courage to move forward during the pause Xuanzang was not merely sightseeing here; he was carrying out a precise “logistics plan.” Ahead lay the daunting Ling Mountains (today’s Tianshan Muzart Pass), a death zone of year-round snow, low oxygen, and bitter cold. Xuanzang knew that without sufficient physical reserves and supplies, crossing the snow mountains meant certain death. So, in Aksu, he preached, repaired his clothes and shoes, recruited porters, and even adjusted his schedule by observing the climate. This balance of effort and rest showed great survival wisdom: true courage is not reckless bravado but knowing when to conserve strength for critical moments. 3. Life lessons: maintaining a calm pace amid the chase Walking through Aksu, you see the proud poplar trees everywhere. They “live for a thousand years without dying, and after death, stand for a thousand years,” their secret lying in deep roots that store water during abundant seasons. This spirit aligns perfectly with Xuanzang’s core values. Staying alert in good times and quietly building strength in comfort prepares one for future uncertainties. Every time Xuanzang chanted scriptures in the oasis, he was “recharging” his spirit. He understood that only a steady inner light can illuminate the long, snowy path ahead. Leaving Aksu, Xuanzang faced his toughest battle—crossing the Ling Mountains. Without the “stillness” of the oasis, there would have been no “movement” to fight the wind and snow later. Life is the same. We often get caught in the anxiety of endless competition, mistakenly thinking nonstop hustle equals success. But Xuanzang’s time in Aksu teaches us that pause is not giving up but recalibrating direction; recharging is not laziness but preparing to break through weaknesses. In this fast-paced era, may we all have our own “Aksu moment” to find life’s resilience in the balance of effort and rest.

September’s reverse travel focuses on “off-peak bargains” and “deep experiences.” Based on your needs, I found three unique and budget-friendly hidden cities, ranging from the grandeur of the northwest to the Zen charm of the south: Jiuquan, Gansu · Jinta (Poplar forest & Gobi secret realm) · Autumn scenery king: Late September to mid-October is the best time to see the poplar forest. Jinbo Lake reflects the golden forest like an oil painting. Compared to Ejina Banner, there are fewer people here and the ticket is 85 yuan (including sightseeing bus). · Save money and get great shots: You can visit Guazhou on the way to see Yulin Grottoes, which rival the Mogao Caves in artistic value but are more natural (no reservation, fewer people, quiet). You can also explore the free or low-cost Heidushan and Yumen Moshang Geological Parks (tickets about 20 yuan) to shoot sci-fi scenes like the “moon surface” (⚠️ SUV recommended for self-driving). · Authentic food: Special lamb stew pancake, sand scallion beef roll, and cheap, sweet autumn honeydew melon. Jining, Shandong · Zoucheng (A carb lover’s paradise with happy prices) · Super low prices: Rated by netizens as a city with a very high “happiness index” for prices, you can enjoy authentic local snacks from morning till night without worry. · Cultural escape: As the hometown of Mencius, it has deep cultural roots. The September weather is comfortable, perfect for slow-paced wandering, completely avoiding big city crowds. · Must-eat list: Sichuan-style noodles, military sandwich, beef banmian, and big-bearded squid. Shaoxing, Zhejiang (The authentic Jiangnan without over-commercialization) · Jiangnan slow life: The water town in Lu Xun’s writings, quieter than popular ancient towns. Ride a black-awning boat through small bridges and flowing water, experiencing the true Jiangnan charm at very low cost. · Cultural experience: Tickets for former residences and ancient towns are affordable, and tasting specialties like yellow wine and fennel beans is very budget-friendly. 💡 Budget travel tip: Prioritize eating at local favorite small restaurants and stay in hostels or shared rooms in guesthouses to save a lot. Which of these three places do you prefer? To see the poplar forest in the northwest or stroll the water towns in Jiangnan? Tell me your choice, and I’ll share detailed tips on saving money for transportation and accommodation~

Some say: only after seeing Qinghai and Gansu can you truly appreciate the vastness of China🌍 A trip to Qinghai and Gansu lets you experience salt lakes, lakes, gobi deserts, sand dunes, Danxia landforms, grasslands, and snow-capped mountains all in one go… ✨️Every day offers different scenery, and your phone storage will be filled with photos!! . But when traveling with kids, itinerary planning must be done carefully!!❌ Some 5-day big loop guides online are totally misleading, with long hours of intense driving every day. Kids keep asking when you’ll arrive, and by the end, no one feels like enjoying the sights~ · ⭕The reality of bringing kids to Dunhuang in summer: ✔️July and August are peak season in northwest China, and Dunhuang is very crowded. You must book Mogao Grottoes A tickets 30 days in advance. B tickets are not recommended, not because you can only see 4 caves, but because the lines are too long. Without a guide, you’re just pushed along by the crowd~ ✔️No drone shots allowed at Mingsha Mountain, and it’s very crowded. But in peak season, there’s a concert with thousands of people, which doesn’t happen in the off-season~ It’s best to visit Mingsha Mountain around 5–6 PM when it’s cooler. Ride camels and climb the mountain to catch the sunset and wait for the concert. The concert is recommended to watch from halfway up the mountain, from 9:30 PM to 11 PM. Leave a bit early or you’ll face huge crowds and won’t find a ride back. ✔️In July and August, Dunhuang temperatures range from 17 to 35℃, with strong midday sun. Plan indoor activities for kids. Qinghai ranges from 10 to 24℃, with strong winds at night, so bring warm jackets! ✔️To help kids better understand history, prepare by watching the documentary "Hexi Corridor" and reading children’s books like "Dunhuang on the Silk Road" ✔️Essentials: U-shaped pillow, disposable underwear, disposable socks are great travel companions! Stay well hydrated because the northwest is very dry, and kids can get constipated. · ✅If you don’t want to be too tired but still want to explore, you can follow our Qinghai-Gansu small loop: Qinghai Lake → Chaka Salt Lake → Qilian Grassland → Zhangye Danxia → Zhangye’s lesser-known desert (a secret spot without crowds) → Jiayuguan → Dunhuang ✅If you want your kids to have playmates and a more relaxed, fun trip with better service and itinerary planning, choose a family tour like ours (avoid very cheap tours that take you to boring wild spots and have hidden fees) · 🐫7 days 6 nights Qinghai-Gansu small loop itinerary: Day 1 Arrive in Xining Day 2 Xining – Qinghai Lake (horseback riding by the lake🐎) – Chaka Salt Lake (salt lake science class, salt lake sunset) Day 3 Chaka – Donggeer viewing platform (watching Huangyu fish) – private ranch (wear Tibetan clothes, experience local life, ride a small train) – Binggou forest (🌿 plant science) – Qilian bubble house Day 4 Qilian – Danxia landform – Jinshawan desert camp (private desert, unlimited sand sliding, desert sunset, desert dinner, bonfire party, desert starry sky✨️) Day 5 Camp (camel riding🐫, making wheat straw squares) – Jiayuguan (Great Wall repair) – Yumen Day 6 Yumen – Dunhuang (mural copying, visit Mogao Grottoes) – Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring Day 7 Return from Dunhuang · 👉Private car tours, custom tours, and private groups are all available~ To get the same itinerary, tap the bottom left of the screen [Chat with us] for details! ·

👍Highly Recommended: A Neolithic double-mouthed conjoined pottery jar (also often called a double-jointed pottery pot), a rather unique type of pottery container found in prehistoric archaeology. ✅Must-Try: The vessel is a grayish-brown handmade pottery piece. The body retains obvious traces of excavation and restoration. The body consists of two independent open-mouthed necks connected by a shared bulging belly. A perforated space exists between the two mouths, and the bottom narrows, making it a very unique type of prehistoric pottery. ❤Reasons for Recommendation: This double-mouthed pottery was unearthed at the Huoshaogou site in Yumen, Gansu. Completely different from the common three-legged pottery vessels with bird-beak spouts, it is a typical characteristic artifact of the Qijia or Siba cultures. 👍Highly Recommended: Double-jointed containers were storage vessels at the time. Some believe they may have been related to ancient marriage and sacrificial rituals. They also had practical advantages: the double-mouthed design allowed for the simultaneous holding of two different drinks and made it easier for two people to hold and carry.

In July, don’t squeeze like sardines on the beach or wait two hours in line to see the back of someone’s head in an ancient town. I’m focusing on those long-underrated corners—northwest salt lakes, southern Zhejiang peaks, western Fujian tulou, all reachable within 2 hours by high-speed train or by small plane. The same three days, choose between bustling local life and wild, untouched landscapes. 01 Haixi Mongolian Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai While others crowd into Chaka Salt Lake in July, I head straight to Chaerhan Salt Lake. 🚄 It’s less than a 40-minute taxi ride from Golmud city center. Tickets plus sightseeing bus cost just over 100 yuan. ⏰ Arrive after 4 PM. The slanting sunlight hits the water, salt crystals sparkle like tiny diamonds, and it’s so quiet you can hear the wind tinkling as it brushes the crystals. Emerald Lake is even wilder. Navigate to “Dachaidan Emerald Lake,” there’s a simple parking lot by the road. 📍 Walk to the innermost bright green pool—don’t stop at the first one you see. ⚠️ Wear dark slippers; salt crusts hurt your feet. Light-colored shoes get ruined. At the foot of the Kunlun Mountains, don’t rush to take photos—sit on a roadside rock and watch the clouds move along the ridgeline. It’s better than any filter. 02 Wenzhou | Zhejiang Yandang Mountain is best explored in the morning. ⏰ Enter Lingfeng Scenic Area at 6:30 AM. The morning mist hasn’t cleared, and the rocks look like they’ve grown out of an ink painting. 🍜 At the foot of the mountain is “Axiang Noodle House,” famous for its seafood noodles. The broth is so fresh it’ll make your eyebrows fall off. Skip the big group tour loop; just visit Lingfeng and Lingyan. Leave the park by 2 PM when the sun makes the rocks glare. Liu Bowen’s hometown is in Nantian Town, about a 2-hour bus ride from Wenzhou South Station. 📍 In front of Wuyang Academy stands a 600-year-old camphor tree with shade cool enough for a nap. ⏰ Visit at dusk. The wooden buildings glow warm gold, and almost no one is around. ⚠️ Closed on Mondays. Don’t go for nothing. 03 Longyan | Fujian The shock of the tulou (Yongding) isn’t in the Tulou Prince Scenic Area. 📍 Bypass the commercial street of Hongkeng Village and walk deeper for half an hour to “Rushenglou”—the smallest round tulou. The door panels are carved with flowers and birds, and elders sit in the courtyard peeling bamboo shoots. 🍜 An old lady in the village sells glutinous rice wine for 5 yuan a bowl. It’s very sweet. Walking Longting Ancient City at night is more atmospheric than during the day. Enter from Sanyuan Pavilion, walk east along the moat. The stone slabs are polished shiny from footsteps. ⏰ After 7:30 PM, when tourists have left and lanterns light up, you can hear distant Hakka mountain songs. Guanzhaishan is not recommended—two hours of climbing for a small hilltop isn’t worth it. Better to eat a spicy, pickled vegetable baji pancake at the foot of the mountain. 04 Hanzhong | Shaanxi You don’t have to walk the entire Shimen plank road. Take the sightseeing bus from the park entrance to the “Shimen Reservoir” stop, turn left and walk 200–300 meters along the plank road to see the carved characters “Shimen,” then turn back. ⏰ Best to arrive before 9 AM when the mist hasn’t cleared. The sound of the Bao River mixes with birdsong. ⚠️ The plank road steps are narrow. Be cautious with elderly travelers. The ancient Han platform is hidden inside the Hanzhong Museum. 📍 On the third floor of Wangjiang Tower, the east window looks out over the Han River, the west window faces the rooftops of local houses. Free entry with ID. At dusk, sit under the willows on Binjiang Road for an hour and watch the sunset turn the river orange. 🍜 Nearby “Hanshui Renjia” serves hot rice noodles with chili that’s spicy enough to make your throat burn. 05 Guiyang | Guizhou Tianhetan is in Huaxi District, reachable by bus 211 from downtown. ⏰ Enter at 8:30 AM. Explore the dry cave first, then take a boat into the water cave. The cave is 10 degrees cooler than outside, with wet stalactites dripping water. It takes about two hours to walk through the entire karst cave. Don’t buy the round-trip boat ticket included in the package; it’s not worth it. In Qingyan Ancient Town, only walk “Zhuangyuan Street” and the “Back Street.” 📍 The stone slabs on the back street are worn shiny black by shoe soles, and moss clings thickly to the walls. 🍜 Braised pig’s feet are everywhere. Choose the one with steam coming from the stove at the door. It’s 3 yuan each and so tender it falls off the bone. Visit Gaopo Yunding Grassland in the afternoon. The wind is strong at the top, making it hard to stand, but the clouds float right above your head. ⚠️ Don’t go up the mountain during summer storms; the roads are slippery. 06 Jiuquan | Gansu The sunset at Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake is the main event. ⏰ Enter at 5:30 PM. Climb the sand dune on the left. The ladder in the middle is crowded, so move 100 meters left where the slope is gentler and no one has stepped. Reach the top just in time to see the sun sink behind the sand ridge and the Crescent Lake light up. 🍜 Outside the park, “Xiajia Hezhi” serves lamb soup with flatbread. The hot soup brings out the fresh flavor of the lamb. Mogao Caves require advance booking for emergency tickets (138 yuan for four caves). If you can’t get an A-class ticket, don’t stress. 📍 Cave 148 has the longest reclining Buddha. Look at the toes—the nail art is so fresh it looks like it was painted yesterday. ⏰ Visit from late June to early July. The cave temperature is several degrees cooler than outside. After half an hour inside, you have to come out. Yadan Geological Park is too far—four hours round trip by car, with only two or three stops to see the landforms. Better to stop for half an hour at Yumen Pass and watch the loess mounds stand on the Gobi Desert, wind and sand blowing your face. 07 Xing’an League | Inner Mongolia Arxan National Forest Park can’t be fully explored in one day. ⏰ Enter at 7 AM and head straight to Tuofengling Tianchi. Climb 683 steps. When you reach the top, the sun will have just turned the water blue-green. ⚠️ Don’t trust the “horseback tours” at the park entrance. They’re expensive and bumpy, and the spots are just a few steps away. Riding horses actually takes a longer route. The volcanic lava landforms in Shitanglin are a different color—black-brown rocks with white wildflowers growing in the cracks. 📍 At the entrance to Santan Gorge, a five-minute walk on the wooden plank road leads to “Woniu Pond,” where the water is so clear you can count the pebbles. 🍜 In the town below the mountain, the “Mongolian restaurant” serves hand-pulled meat dipped in chive flower sauce. The gamey taste is so mild I ate two pieces. If you only pick one place to stay until dusk, choose Budong River—the water reflects the sunset, and the coniferous forest on both banks becomes silent. 08 Zhoukou | Henan Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum cultural tourism area is quietest in the morning. ⏰ Opens at 6:30 AM. First, see the “Tongtian Hall.” The ancient cypress tree in front has an 8-meter circumference, and its bark looks like the veins on an old hand. 📍 In the backyard “Yicao Garden,” there’s a patch of grass half a meter tall, said to be used by Fuxi for divination. 🍜 Outside the park, “Chenzhou Restaurant” serves spicy soup thick enough to stand chopsticks in, with several chunks of beef inside. Taiqing Palace is in Luyi County, about an hour by bus from Zhoukou East Station. ⏰ Enter at 3 PM. Cool off under the ginkgo trees and admire the flying eaves and dougong brackets of the “Bagua Pavilion.” ⚠️ Incense at the palace is expensive—10 yuan for three sticks outside, 80 yuan inside. If you want to take portraits, stand on the bluestone steps in front of “Wuji Hall.” The light filtering through the beams creates an ancient atmosphere. Want to see all eight places in three days? Dream on. Pick two with different vibes—like Haixi’s wild charm plus southern Zhejiang’s mountains, or western Fujian’s tulou plus southern Shaanxi’s Han River. Every summer vacation, the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop is one of the most inquired routes for families with children. But many routes just rush through the attractions, while this 7-day 6-night trip truly combines nature, culture, history, and parent-child experiences. From Qinghai Lake heading west to Dunhuang, kids are exploring all along the way, not just checking off spots. · 🌊 Qinghai Lake and Chaka Salt Lake are the most comfortable ways to open up the Northwest The first stop is Qinghai Lake, where each person rides a horse across the grasslands, watching snow-capped mountains and rapeseed flowers by the lake. Then head to Chaka Salt Lake, follow the teacher to do salt lake experiments, learn about salt formation, density, and crystallization principles, and wait for a plateau sunset that dyes the entire sky golden. · 🌿 Grasslands, forests, Danxia landforms, all scenes straight out of textbooks On the third day, visit a private ranch at Qinghai Lake, wear Tibetan clothes, offer khata scarves, grind highland barley, make tsampa, then take a grassland train through the rapeseed flower sea. In the afternoon, hike in the Qilian Binggou forest sea, learning about plateau ecology through plant and forest classes. On the fourth day, climb Zhuoer Mountain to see the colorful Danxia landforms and truly understand what a "natural palette" means. · 🏜 The two days in the desert are the most unforgettable for kids Stay in a desert starry sky room, spend the afternoon sliding endlessly on sand dunes, playing desert volleyball, climbing sand peaks, and desert hiking. In the evening, sit on the sand dunes drinking afternoon tea, watching the sunset slowly sink into the sea of sand. The next day, ride camels deep into the desert, learn about the wheatgrass checkerboard method for desert control, and understand China's desert control stories. At the end, one child happily said, "So the desert isn’t just sand." At night, gather around the campfire to listen to Silk Road stories, from Zhang Qian and Huo Qubing to Xuanzang, told in a way children can understand. · Finally, arrive in Dunhuang. Follow the teacher to visit the Mogao Caves, watch digital films, enter the actual caves, and experience mural copying, truly embedding Dunhuang culture in the children’s memories. In the evening, you can go on your own to Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring to watch a concert with thousands of people and the desert sunset, which many families feel is the most ceremonial stop. · 7 days 6 nights itinerary D1 Gather in Xining D2 Qinghai Lake Scenic Area · Horse Riding in Qinghai + Chaka Salt Lake Experiment Class D3 Qinghai Lake Private Ranch + Grassland Train + Forest Hiking D4 Zhuoer Mountain + Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park + Desert Starry Sky Room D5 Camel Riding + Wheatgrass Checkerboard + Jiayuguan Fortress D6 Mogao Caves + Mural Copying + Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring D7 Return from Dunhuang Accommodation 1 night in Xining hotel 1 night in Chaka Salt Lake hotel 1 night in Qilian bubble house 1 night in desert starry sky room 1 night in Yumen hotel 1 night in Dunhuang hotel · Suitable for which families? ✅ Kids over 5 who love nature exploration and history & culture ✅ Want to cover classic Qinghai and Gansu routes without rushing too much ✅ Budget around 5000 RMB, hoping kids can learn while playing · Summer group dates are now open.
