On this trip to Guangxi, I set aside a day and a half for Huangyao Ancient Town. Honestly, I was worried it might be just another "over-commercialized" tourist trap. But the moment I saw the grand entrance against the backdrop of those rolling Karst peaks, I knew I could finally relax 🏞️. What I love most is the vibe—it’s not like those noisy ancient towns filled with shouting vendors. Once you step inside, you're greeted by winding cobblestone paths, centuries-old banyan trees, and weathered brick walls. You just naturally start to slow down. Along the way, the scent of Huangyao’s famous fermented black beans fills the air. I tried the dace fish and steamed pork with black beans—they were incredibly authentic, not the watered-down versions you usually find at tourist spots. Every corner is a photo op with a rustic, timeless feel—no filters needed. Just a quick heads-up: there are plenty of stairs and stone paths, so comfortable shoes are a must! I think this place is perfect for travelers who want to escape the hustle and clear their heads. You don't need to rush to every landmark; just wandering quietly or grabbing a cup of tea is incredibly healing. 📍Address: Huangyao Town, Zhaoping County, Hezhou City, Guangxi 💡Personal Tips: · Look for ticket discounts online beforehand. · There's plenty of parking outside the town, making it very convenient for self-driving. · For photos without the crowds, head in early in the morning or during sunset!

Escape Shenzhen’s summer heat in August by taking the high-speed train north toward northern Guangdong or Guangxi. In about 1 hour, you can reach several truly cool and lesser-known small towns. I’ve picked 4 for you, ranked by “coolness + few crowds + great food,” with a lazy traveler’s summary at the end. --- 1. Qingyuan, Guangdong · Yingde (high-speed train about 35 minutes) Keywords: karst secret spots, natural cave air conditioning, fresh river delicacies · Cooling core: Xianqiao underground river (constant 18℃ inside, boat rides through stalactites), Fenglin Xiaozhen (lotus in full bloom, small train through flower fields) · Off-the-beaten-path activities: Rent an electric bike to ride the Yingxi Peak Forest Corridor, encounter pastoral cattle scenes wilder than Guilin. Soak in wild water under the abandoned bridge at Huoshi Water Village, a local secret. · Must-eat: Jiulong tofu (incredibly tender), Beijiang river fresh fish (braised yellow catfish with tofu), free-range chicken hot pot. Recommended “Fengwei Farmhouse,” about 50 per person to eat your fill. · Accommodation: Stay at the Danjia boat house guesthouse floating on a lotus pond, stargaze at night. 2. Hezhou, Guangxi (high-speed train about 1.5 hours) Keywords: ancient original town, waterfall creek trekking, centenarian diet · Cooling core: Shibashui waterfall cluster (high negative oxygen ions, perfect for creek trekking and cooling off), Ziyun Cave (cave cooler than an air-conditioned room) · Off-the-beaten-path activities: Visit Huangyao ancient town but stay outside the main street near the East Gate Tower. Enter the town at 6 AM for free to see morning mist and cooking smoke. Hike the Matang Peak route on Gupo Mountain, spot wild macaques. · Must-eat: sour and spicy beef intestines (appetizing), fermented black bean rice noodles, stuffed melon flowers. Find grandma’s cart selling mugwort rice cakes at the night market street. · Accommodation: Stay at Huangyao’s Shengzhifu ancient mansion guesthouse, with a century-old opera stage, listen to rain on banana leaves at night. 3. Shaoguan, Guangdong · Shixing (high-speed train about 50 minutes) Keywords: Hakka walled villages, Chebaling forest, creek trekking and water play · Cooling core: Chebaling National Nature Reserve (primeval forest streams, icy cold water), Tongzhong Village (Danxia landform plus natural stone cave wind tunnels) · Off-the-beaten-path activities: Explore Mantang Hakka walled village (Guangdong’s largest walled village, cool and maze-like). Visit the wild beach at Qinghua River, set up a canopy and enjoy watermelon, shallow and safe water. · Must-eat: stuffed duck with glutinous rice, Shixing sour bamboo shoots (perfect with stir-fried snails), fried eggplant pockets. Recommended “Lao Jiu Restaurant,” famous for cured meat rice. · Accommodation: Stay at Hongli Village countryside inn, open the window to rice fields, watch fireflies at night. 4. Heyuan, Guangdong · Longchuan (high-speed train about 1 hour) Keywords: Dongjiang gallery, ancient county academy, tofu meatballs · Cooling core: Huoshan (one of Guangdong’s seven famous mountains, glass skywalk with cool breezes), Fengshuba Reservoir (take a fishing boat tour of “Guangdong Thousand Island Lake”) · Off-the-beaten-path activities: Stroll through Tuocheng, a thousand-year-old town, wander the old alleys of Jinshi Street, relax in the “Kaopeng” with air conditioning. Fish by the Dongjiang River at dusk, grill your catch fresh. · Must-eat: Longchuan tofu meatballs (meat stuffed with tofu), spring roll sausage (meat wrapped in casing), mouse rice cake (rice noodle strips). Drink Hakka yellow wine at the Xinjiekou night market. · Accommodation: Stay at the “starry sky tent” at the foot of Huoshan, enjoy cool night breezes and a low-hanging Milky Way. · -- Lazy traveler city guide · For ultimate coolness + water fun: Yingde (caves) or Shixing (forest streams) · Prefer culture + slow living: Hezhou (ancient town) or Longchuan (thousand-year-old county) · Most off-the-beaten-path (almost no tourists): Shixing (Chebaling is quiet even on weekends) Tips to avoid trouble: · August has frequent showers, bring a raincoat (more convenient than an umbrella for hiking) · Friday night high-speed train tickets are in high demand, consider leaving Thursday or buy a “no seat” ticket and upgrade on board · Always ask locals about safe areas at wild water spots, don’t jump into pools recklessly If you decide where to go, I can draw up a detailed “3 days 2 nights easy” itinerary for you, even planning what time to get up to avoid the sun. 😊 Which one excites you the most?

The Xiangu Waterfall rushes down the cliff, its mist cool and refreshing, instantly dispelling the summer heat. The Guyao Chong area is home to a clever troop of wild macaques you can feed up close, but be careful not to rummage through your bag or expose food in front of them, or you might get “robbed” by these little rascals. This place was also a filming location for the TVB drama "Tea is the Hometown’s Deepest Affection," where every snap in the tea gardens feels like a vintage masterpiece. Huangyao Ancient Town This thousand-year-old ancient town hidden among the peak forests is a true time capsule🏮. Walking on the polished bluestone paths worn smooth by time, flanked by Ming and Qing dynasty brick and tile houses, with the Yao River flowing through the town and small bridges crossing the water, it’s like a vivid Lingnan ink-wash painting. The Dailong Bridge is the town’s landmark, beside which an 800-year-old banyan tree with sprawling roots stands. Early morning mist adds the most poetic atmosphere for photos. When night falls, red lanterns light up along the streets, reflecting and swaying on the water. Without noisy bars, only the evening breeze and cicadas’ chirping make strolling here especially relaxing and healing. Zhongshan Ink-Wash Countryside Want to see ink-wash landscapes that rival Yangshuo? Zhongshan Ink-Wash Countryside is the place🖼️. It’s completely free and you can drive right in, with scenery all along the way. Stop by the roadside to enjoy the breeze or walk slowly along the ridges. No crowds, just endless soothing greenery, and every photo is wallpaper-worthy. Hezhou Jade Stone Forest A rare national white marble stone forest, this is Hezhou’s most surprising geological wonder🪨. Over 100 million years of geological evolution created this snowy white stone forest maze, with stone pillars and stalagmites in various shapes. Walking through it feels like exploring nature’s master craftsmanship. The most breathtaking spot is the “One Line Sky,” where towering stone walls on both sides allow only one person to pass sideways, with a narrow strip of sky visible above—both oppressive and awe-inspiring. On sunny days, sunlight on the white marble glows warmly, making photos look stunning. Yongfeng Lake Park A free ecological wetland park hidden in the city, perfectly capturing Guangxi’s mountain and water vibe🏞️. The lake is wide and calm, with an ancient-style pagoda standing in the center. Karst hills reflect in the water, like a miniature ink-wash landscape painting. Beef Intestine Sour Soup is the top street food in Hezhou, known as Guangxi’s version of “oden”🍢. Beef offal skewers simmer in a sour and spicy broth made from over twenty herbs, bubbling away. Dip them in secret sauce; the offal is tender and flavorful, the broth sour with a hint of sweetness. Eating it on the go is full of local life, and you’ll want to drink every drop of the soup. Shiba Niang (Eighteen Stuffed Delicacies) is the soul of Hakka cuisine—truly everything can be stuffed🥟. The classic stuffed tofu is tender outside and fragrant inside, with juicy meat filling; the summer-only stuffed melon flower is sweet and fresh, bursting with flavor. There are also stuffed chili peppers, bamboo shoots, and more than a dozen varieties, each with a unique taste surprise. Huangyao Fermented Black Bean Rice Noodles are the ancient town’s exclusive delicacy🍜. Handmade rice noodles are smooth and chewy, served in a broth made from locally fermented black soybeans, with tender stewed beef brisket. The flavor is savory, slightly spicy, and rich with fermented bean aroma—one bowl leaves you feeling completely satisfied. Also try thin-skinned, generously filled rice dumplings, sweet and sour refreshing wasp jelly, and the uniquely fragrant Hakka oil tea. Sample all the snacks one by one—you won’t want to stop eating. Even the ubiquitous snail noodles and old friend noodles have their own Hezhou twist, with firmer noodles and a more satisfying chew. ⚠️ Super Practical Travel Tips to Avoid Pitfalls · Accommodation: For an immersive slow life experience, stay one night in Huangyao Ancient Town to enjoy both night and morning views exclusively. If staying in the city, prioritize the area around Far East Lingfeng Plaza for convenience in dining and transportation. · Transportation: Shared electric scooters are very convenient for short trips in the city; for distant spots like Gupo Mountain and Huangyao Ancient Town, take tourist shuttle buses or carpool for great value. · Ticket Tips: To save on Huangyao Ancient Town entrance fees, enter before 7:30 AM or after 10 PM on holidays. Don’t skip the sightseeing bus tickets for Gupo Mountain and Jade Stone Forest—these areas are large, and walking will tire you out. · Play Reminders: There are many wild macaques on Gupo Mountain. Avoid rummaging through bags or exposing food in front of them to prevent being robbed or scratched. Safety first. Compared to crowded popular spots, Hezhou’s charm lies in its relaxed and pristine nature. The mountains and waters rival Yangshuo, the ancient town is full of local life, and the food is cheap and authentic. Spend a weekend escaping the city noise and dive headfirst into mountains, waters, and ancient alleys.

A leisurely stroll through the century-old tea house and ancient garden in the east of the city. Built in the mid-Qing Dynasty, this estate was once a gathering place for literati and refined scholars to sip tea, compose poetry, and discuss philosophy. Legend has it that local scholars would come here to brew tea and calm their minds before setting off for their imperial exams, hoping to attain inner peace and a free flow of literary inspiration. For centuries, it has remained untouched by commercial hustle and bustle, preserving the most rustic charm of a tea garden. Towering ancient trees reach into the sky, while winding bluestone paths crisscross the grounds. An old bluestone well stands quietly in the garden, offering clear, sweet, and trickling mountain spring water. Terraced tea fields spread out along the mountain, creating rolling green waves whenever the wind sweeps through the forest. The pavilions and covered corridors radiate antique charm; every random corner hides the lingering essence of time. In the past, my travels were always in "rush-and-check-in mode." I would pack my itinerary to the brim, rushing around under the scorching sun just to get to popular photo spots. In the end, I was left with nothing but exhaustion, completely missing the true meaning of traveling afar. This time, I deliberately broke away from that restless pace and emulated the elegant pursuits of the ancients: "wandering to find tea, sitting quietly to observe the mind." I didn't rush, didn't snap photos, and didn't chase the crowds. I simply wandered slowly through the garden, savoring the cultural stories hidden within its ancient walls. When I reached an old tea hut nestled in the mountains—the very spot where literati used to gather and brew tea—I simply sat down to rest. I lit a fresh fire with my own hands, boiled the clear spring water from the ancient well, and selected the season's new tea buds to brew slowly and carefully. As the water lightly boiled and the tea steam curled upward, the tender leaves unfolded and floated in the water, slowly filling the air with a fresh, elegant fragrance. A sweet, refreshing sip slid down my throat, instantly washing away all worldly worries and relaxing my mind and soul. It made me think of Su Shi from the Song Dynasty. Despite suffering repeated setbacks in his official career, he still lived leisurely, brewing tea, composing poetry, and enjoying wine. He didn't let himself get trapped by worries or waste his youth, which is why his immortal verses have been passed down through the ages. Looking back at my daily life, I am always anxious and drained by trivial matters; being overly rushed makes me miss out on so much beauty. It turns out that travel is never about chasing grand vanity, but about learning to live freely and enjoy the present moment, just like the ancients. Time is fleeting. Rather than spending our days rushing around and draining ourselves, it's better to seize our prime years to brew tea, enjoy the scenery, and quietly relish life's simple joys, treating everything in the world with a relaxed heart. As Su Shi once said, "Let's try new tea with a newly lit fire; enjoy poetry and wine while we are still in our youth." Leisurely tasting the new tea of the ancient garden, tracing the elegant charm of the people of the past, and spending the days in a carefree manner—this is truly making a trip to this world worthwhile.

Stop crowding the popular ancient towns! I discovered a treasure in Guangxi—Huangyao Ancient Town. In winter, it’s free from the hustle and bustle of the Li River, just a quiet stone city that has stood for a thousand years beneath the karst peak forest. Bringing kids here feels like stepping onto the set of a martial arts movie, with unique stone slab roads, ancient banyan trees, and red lanterns forming a one-of-a-kind winter Lingnan painting. 🌫️ The unique charm of Huangyao in winter Mild climate: Winter temperatures in Hezhou, Guangxi range from 10-15°C, with bright sunshine making it very comfortable and perfect for hiking. Magical morning mist: Often shrouded in light fog at dawn, the mountains and ancient town appear faint and mysterious, creating a fairyland atmosphere—ideal for photography. Living cultural fossil: Bluestone slab roads, Ming and Qing dynasty old houses, and ancestral hall plaques everywhere form a three-dimensional history book. 👣 Kid-friendly exploration guide (focus on easy walking) · Stone slab street treasure hunt: The ancient town consists of 8 stone slab streets; compete with your kids to find different “stone slab patterns” and “door lintel carvings.” · Claim a thousand-year-old banyan tree: The giant banyan by Long Bridge is a landmark; let the kids hug it and feel the vitality of nature. · Find the “strange” fermented black beans: Huangyao’s fermented black beans are a specialty; let kids smell and see the various flavored beans—fun and appetizing. · Optional boat tour: Take a small boat from the dock on the outskirts of the town to enjoy panoramic views of the town backed by mountains. 🍲 Must-try local flavors Huangyao stuffed tofu: Tofu puffs filled with stuffing, tender and juicy, kids love it. Fermented black bean feast: Fermented black bean pork ribs and steamed fish, perfect with rice, sure to whet kids’ appetites. Bamboo shoot stuffing: Seasonal ingredient, possibly available in winter, fresh and crisp. Pumpkin cakes: Freshly fried at roadside stalls, soft, glutinous, and sweet—perfect energy boost for hiking. 🛖 Immersive lodging options surrounded by scenery Good accommodations both inside and outside the ancient town, each with a distinct style: Huangyao Ancient Town Longlintai Boutique Hotel: Located at the town’s core high point, unbeatable views, converted from old houses with exquisite design. Huangyao Academy Hotel: Rich in cultural atmosphere, like a quiet library, with courtyard rooms, ideal for families who enjoy tranquility. Huangyao Puli Xingfuli Homestay: Not far outside the town, modern design style, spacious rooms, well-equipped, great value. 💡 Super practical pre-trip memo Transportation: Take the high-speed train to “Hezhou Station,” then transfer to a direct bus to Huangyao Ancient Town (about 1 hour). For self-driving, navigate to the scenic area parking lot. Tickets: Buy in advance on platforms like Trip.com, sometimes with time slot discounts. After 9 PM, security leaves, so you can enter freely but cannot visit small attractions. Clothing: Cool in the early morning and evening in winter; recommend sweatshirt + jacket. Be sure to wear extremely comfortable, non-slip shoes! The stone slab roads test your feet. Itinerary: Recommended 2 days 1 night. Day 1: stroll the main street + night view; Day 2: watch the morning mist and explore the alleys. When the city’s winter is gray and dull, bring your kids to Huangyao Ancient Town to see the bluestone, green water, and unchanging mountains. This tranquility and antiquity will be a special part of childhood memories.

Who says Guangxi only has Guilin? Less than a 2-hour drive from Guilin, there’s an ancient town surrounded 360° by karst peaks. Visiting in winter feels like owning an entire landscape painting! This place is Huangyao Ancient Town. No cruise ship whistles, just the sound of flowing water and chickens and dogs in the distance. Take your kids on a gentle hike, enjoy delicious food, and stay in charming accommodations for a healing journey. 🎯 Core winter family activities: light outdoor + cultural experience Based on the town’s characteristics, we designed a balanced itinerary to ensure kids burn off energy and gain plenty. 🌄 Outdoor nature lessons (using the abundant morning sunlight) · Morning hike for fresh air: Take a short hike (30-40 minutes) along the “Jiuhu Mountain” or “Zhenwu Mountain” trails outside Huangyao Ancient Town. Enjoy a panoramic view of the town from the summit—breathtaking! · Streamside ecological observation: Bring a net and small bucket (buy in advance), explore the shallow water areas near the town (ensure safety), look for small fish and shrimp, and learn about aquatic plants. · Ancient tree blessing ritual: Under the huge dragon claw banyan or sleeping immortal banyan, write down New Year wishes with your kids and hang blessing ribbons for a full sense of ceremony. 🏮 Indoor cultural lessons (warm afternoon time) · Visit Sima Residence and Langguan Residence: See the mansions of ancient “civil servants” and hear stories about social status and the imperial examination system. · Learn a Hakka phrase: Learn a simple greeting from a local shop owner grandma, like “Sik zo fan mei” (Have you eaten?). · Hand-paint a postcard: Find a quiet shop, paint the Longqiao Bridge you see, and send it to grandparents at home. 🛏️ Stylish family accommodation recommendations Good rest means better play. These three each have unique features: Aishu Huangyao Academy Homestay: Combines treehouse concept with an academy, featuring a family slide room! The rooftop terrace offers stunning views. Huangyao Starry Nest Boutique Resort: Located in the countryside outside the town, with transparent bubble houses and tents. You can stargaze at night—kids find it fascinating. Huangyao Ancient Town Shengshi Boutique Hotel: Central location, standardized service, clean and tidy rooms. A reliable choice for families seeking stability. 🍛 Hidden gem food checklist Breakfast: Must try the town’s oil tea. It tastes slightly astringent at first but leaves a sweet aftertaste. Served with fried rice and scallions, it’s the locals’ “coffee.” Lunch/Dinner: Huangyao bamboo shoots stuffed, lemon duck (tangy and appetizing), steamed yellow catfish (fresh, sweet, and few bones). Snacks & souvenirs: Wild sweet potato chips, papaya strips (crispy pickled with chili sauce), Huangjing wine (a treat for dad). ⚠️ Important notes Best visiting time: December to February, avoid National Day and summer holidays for the best experience. The festive atmosphere is strong around Chinese New Year but it’s also busier. Slip and fall prevention: The town’s stone slab roads are polished smooth and especially slippery after rain. Always hold your child’s hand and walk slowly. Ticket info: Tickets are all-inclusive for all small attractions inside the town. Keep your ticket with you as spot checks may occur. How to get there: There are many direct buses from Guilin/Yangshuo, very convenient. If driving, pay attention to parking lot locations around the town. In Huangyao Ancient Town, time is measured by the movement of shadows. Bring your kids, put down electronic devices, and watch clouds, mountains, and thousand-year-old trees grow together. This natural nourishment is far more precious than any tutoring class.

#AprilGoodDestinations2025 She watched the TV series "The Best Tea in Hometown" when she was a child and longed for Hezhou very much. Now it takes two hours to get there via Xijiu, and the simple cultural customs are still there. Hezhou is located at the junction of Hunan, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces (regions). It is an important node city connecting the development of China's eastern and western regions, and an important channel connecting the southwest to Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. It is the only prefecture-level city in Guangxi that has a whole-region tourism district, with 1 national 5A-level tourist attraction and 15 national 4A-level tourist attractions. It is like appreciating a painting treasured by Huabei Time. Every natural scenery and cultural landscape is attractive. There are three mountains surrounding it and three parallel rivers flowing through it. You can visit the scenic spots of Zhongshan Ink Painting, Huangyao Ancient Town, Guposhan and Jade Forest.

I was staying at the Dayuan Culture Theme Hotel (Mojia Dayuan, meaning the mansion of the Mo’s). It lies on the southern edge of the ancient town. At this location, the three sub-streams of the Yao river converge. The Dayuan Culture Theme Hotel is an antique building itself. Originally the building belonged to the Mo clan. In the old times, the villagers referred to it as Xianshan Study. During the times of New China, the government had used the building as a warehouse storage for food. The house was built in the traditional style of siheyuan, which was a very popular building format, particularly in Beijing, for the thousands of years. Buildings are built on all four sides of a courtyard. This format was usually built to give home to large multigenerational households. The building’s foundation was made of bluestones (limestones) and it took five years just to lay the foundation. In 2008, the government handed this building back to the Mo’s. In 2015, after careful restoration efforts, which included the fitting of materials that mimic an “aged look,” the hotel opened its doors to visitors. #huangyao #hezhou #guilin #guangxi #china #southchina #黃姚大院文化主題酒店 #黃姚 #hostel #ancienttown #ancienttownvibes #莫家大院

A leisurely walk within the ancient town of Huangyao will take some three hours or so. The storefronts were all well-kept and the walk was pleasant with many photogenic spots. Huangyao has had a history of over one thousand years. The town came into being during the Kaibao Period of the Song Dynasty. The ancient town went through a period of expansion during the Ming Dynasty, and it thrived during the Qing Dynasty. Because the villagers that live there mostly had the surname of Huang and Yao, this ancient town became known as Huangyao. This cobblestoned part of the town is very picturesque. Set against the famous karst peaks of Guilin, Huangyao breathed antiquity amidst a serene nature. Along comes a sense of self-assuredness over its own historic beauty. The closest town to Huangyao is Hezbou in Guangxi. To go there, I highly recommend hiring a driver. It took hours for me to get there by the public bus. #Huangyao #china #ancientown #guangxi

Huangyao Ancient Town is one of China's top 10 ancient towns, and the scenery is beautiful. Towering ancient trees, pavilions, small bridges, flowing water, and cobblestone roads... all the elements of an ancient town are here. My favorite part is the alleys that look unassuming, but when you turn into them, they always surprise you. Whether it's a flower wall, a mottled house, or a winding path, the eaves of the houses on both sides measure out a long and narrow sky. It's so long and narrow, and so blue. It's a perfect combination of ancient and natural. Wandering around, you'll find little surprises from time to time. If you have enough time, it's best to take your time during the day and stay here overnight to experience the simplicity and tranquility and appreciate another side of the town. I heard that you don't need to buy tickets after 6pm, so I arrived at 5pm and waited for an hour. The security guard was off duty. I stayed at a guesthouse near the ancient town, which I was very satisfied with. I took photos of the sunset and the morning, and I spent a long time staring out the window in the morning. The receptionist was also very enthusiastic. The ancient town is relatively small and basically commercialized, selling fermented black beans, pickled vegetables, and Poria cocos cakes. It's okay to come here to relax, but it's best to drive yourself. Otherwise, you'll have to rush back to Hezhou Station to take the high-speed rail, which is still a bit far away. I had fermented black bean horseshoe powder, which tasted good and had a smooth texture. On the second morning, I bought a cappuccino for 35 yuan at a random coffee shop.
