But hiding in the cool shade of the old locust tree in the back alley of Muslim Street, I realized the refreshing breeze carried the aroma of freshly made cured beef sandwiches into my collar. Even at noon, the walkway by Xingqing Palace Lake was only 27 degrees. The small fan I carried stayed in my backpack the whole time, never taken out. It was much more pleasant than squeezing into crowded popular tourist spots or busy shopping areas. Two people spent 1,080 yuan for 3 days. Before leaving, I stuffed two big bags of handmade pomegranate soft candy from the old lady at Sajinqiao into my backpack. An old friend who loves exploring deserted ancient villages asked if I would rent a small courtyard at the foot of Qinling Mountains for half a month next month. Can anyone relate? Last week, I took my two kids to Yangpo Courtyard in Zhashui and stayed in the crocodile-themed family room. They went absolutely wild and I couldn't drag them away 😅 The room alone is enough for a whole day of fun! 🏠 As soon as we walked in, the kids went "Wow!" The room has its own little slide 🛝—they could go down it a hundred times! There's also a little tent ⛺️ where they played house and hide-and-seek, letting this tired mom finally relax for a bit. It’s fully stocked with building blocks and dolls, so there's no need to go out. They can burn off energy all day just staying in the room 🔋 It's even more fun outside! 🌳 The courtyard has a sandpit, swings, and a fairytale cabin, while the public area features a spiral slide and a picture book reading area. The kids slid from the room to the courtyard, chased each other from the courtyard to the sandpit, and ran wild everywhere. I was chasing them around until my legs were about to give out 😂 The environment is truly amazing 🌿 A National Grade A homestay really is different. Tucked away in the Qinling Mountains, the air is so good I wanted to bag some up and take it home. Each courtyard has a different style; the one we stayed in was incredibly quiet. Sitting outside, feeling the breeze, and drinking tea was so therapeutic. The room is big enough and has plenty of facilities—the kids were having so much fun they didn't even think to look for Mom They kept saying "Mom, let's come back next time!" all the way home. With the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays back-to-back, highways to popular cities are turning into parking lots, and hotel prices have tripled—if you can even find a room. I looked back through my road trip logs and picked out 8 underrated, niche cities. They’re less crowded, gas is cheaper, and the scenery is just hitting its peak in autumn. Pick one and head out, as it’s much more comfortable than waiting in line at a tourist trap. 1️⃣ Shangluo | Shaanxi Drive two hours southeast from Xi'an, and you'll dive into the folds of the Qinling Mountains. Autumn arrives early in Jinsi Canyon. ⏰ By mid-to-late October, the sides of the canyon start turning yellow, the water remains clear, and there are far fewer people than during the summer break. 📍 For Jinsi Canyon, I recommend entering from the North Gate and walking along the canyon to the South Gate. It’s mostly downhill, so it’s manageable even if you have bad knees. If you want to save energy, take the scenic shuttle to the top and walk down from there. Tianshu Canyon is best visited on the morning of the second day. It’s so quiet you can hear your own footsteps on the fallen leaves. Save Mancuanguan Ancient Town for the evening, when the sunset warms the bluestone pavement, and be sure to eat the walnut buns on the old street while they’re hot. Baita Temple is worth a quick look if you’re passing by, but don’t go out of your way for it. ⚠️ There’s a big temperature difference between day and night in the mountains, so bring a light down jacket by early October. Book your accommodation in downtown Shangluo or Zhashui County, as it’s half the price of staying near the scenic area entrance. 2️⃣ Yangjiang | Guangdong October in Guangdong finally stops feeling like a sauna. At the Hailing Island Dajiaowan Maritime Silk Road Tourist Area, ⏰ it’s most comfortable to go into the water after 4:00 PM—the sun isn't harsh, and the water is still warm. 📍 When you enter the main gate of Dajiaowan, head left; it’s less crowded than the right side, and the sand is finer. If you have children, keep a close eye on the waves; they aren't big here, but the current is strong when the tide goes out. 🚄 It’s about a three-hour drive from Guangzhou via the Shenhai Expressway, and one tank of gas is enough for the round trip. Accommodation on the island is divided into two areas: Zhapo Town is lively and convenient for dining, while the Poly area is quiet and better for traveling with seniors. 🍜 For dinner, go to the Zhapo Farmers' Market to pick out your own seafood, and the nearby processing shops will charge a fee by weight. Don't order at the food stalls near the scenic area entrance, as the prices can be double. ⚠️ October can still have the tail end of typhoon season, so check the three-day weather forecast before you leave. The biggest takeaway after coming back is: Shangluo isn't the kind of city that wows you at first glance, but the longer you stay, the more you love it ❤️. This year, I split my annual leave into four parts and visited Liupanshui, Anji, Fuxian Lake, and Shangluo. My biggest takeaway: "Summer escape" doesn't have to mean Beidaihe. Whether it's the grasslands of the "Cool Capital," the bamboo seas, highland blue lakes, or deep Qinling valleys, every breeze helped loosen the tension of being forced to work overtime. 🌿 What these four cities have in common: ancient towns, lakeshores, and villages are almost free to enter. The costs are mainly for Wumeng train tickets, Cloud-Top Grassland cable cars, Cambrian dolphin tickets, and cave admission. For the average person, visiting them separately costs between 400 and 1,500 per person for a full experience. 🌾 Liupanshui — 19.7°C Cool Capital Grassland (Stay 2 days) Take the high-speed train from Guiyang to Liupanshui Station in 1.5 hours. Day 1: Shuicheng Ancient Town (free; water-surrounded, blue-tiled alleys, evening lantern reflections; visit the Three-Line Construction Museum for free on the way) -> Night market "laoguo" (hot pot) for 15. Don't be greedy on your first trip: Cloud-Top Grassland for 180 (9:00 AM–9:00 PM, includes round-trip cable car, cliff thrill park + alpine grassland; worth it to take kids to Panda Tribe; don't buy the 580 combo ticket if you're not with kids) -> Afternoon: Yucun Village for free (reserve via official account; birthplace of the "Two Mountains" philosophy, free photos of terraced tea fields at the White Tea Viewing Platform) -> Lingfeng Temple for free (Dipu Town, Shuikou Village; ancient trees and Zen monastery; sit for half an hour if you're not in a rush). Day 1: Dihua Ancient Town for free (Danfeng County, Jia Pingwa's old residence + Song-Jin Border City, prototype for "Qin Qiang," flat roads are easy on the legs) -> Bike on the Shangyu Ancient Road. Day 2: Choose one: Zhashui Karst Cave for 100 (8:30 AM–5:30 PM, Tianfo Cave stalactites + Gudao Ridge; don't climb too hard if with seniors) -> or Jinsixia for 100 + 30 scenic transport (Shangnan, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM, Heilongxia waterfall group "Little Jiuzhaigou," hiking starts at 3 hours, know your limits); if you like old streets, choose Manchuan Pass for free (Shanyang County, Mule Gang Guild Hall + Double Opera Stage, slow city at the Shaanxi-Hubei border). They are places that let you admit "you can actually taste the Cool Capital, bamboo sea, blue lake, and Qinling Mountains separately on a weekend." Don't get sunburned at noon in July–August, don't trust scalpers for free entry, don't crowd Wumeng at noon on weekends in Liupanshui (arrive before 8:00 AM), don't buy the 580 combo ticket for Cloud-Top Grassland in Anji (the 180 general admission is enough), don't just go to Cambrian Town in Fuxian Lake without circling the lake, don't force Jinsixia and Zhashui Cave into 1 day in Shangluo (they are in different counties and will wear you out) — picking 1 city per trip and staying long enough is the way for ordinary people to spend their money and energy wisely. 🥾 Emotional resonance: We usually rush to meet deadlines, stare at DingTalk, and fear missing messages. But that moment sitting at the Wumeng Buddha Light Terrace waiting for the sea of clouds, or standing on the Cloud-Top Grassland cable car watching the bamboo sea roll, or squatting at Fuxian Lake's Moon Bay watching the blue water cover your ankles, or walking the blue stone paths of Dihua Ancient Town listening to the cicadas at Jia Pingwa's old residence — your phone is full, but no one is looking for you. The grass, bamboo, lake, and Qinling Mountains slowly soften the tension of being forced to work overtime. Travel doesn't have to be far. Being able to give yourself back to yourself for a summer is worth the price of that ticket.
