Taking parents to a place, this one is the most worry-free, who gets it?
When traveling with parents, the biggest fear is crowds, long distances, and hassle. I've personally vetted these 8 places. They have a slow pace, plenty of flat paths, and genuine scenery, making them perfect for a leisurely stroll. Some of these places were even praised by my parents, who usually hate walking, so you're unlikely to go wrong taking your elders there.
1. Zhenjiang | Jiangsu
The best thing about Zhenjiang is that the "Three Mountains and One Ferry" are close together, so there's no need to rush. Go to Jinshan in the morning; the park has many flat paths and gentle steps, so a slow walk around takes just over an hour. For lunch, have some pot-lid noodles at a small shop opposite Jinshan Temple. The noodles are chewy and the broth is fresh. Remember to order the aspic pork, a staple for locals in Zhenjiang. In the afternoon, head to Beigu Mountain. It's not high, and you can reach the top in about 10 minutes. Standing on Beigu Tower, you can see the Yangtze River. It's windy, so bring a light jacket for the elders. You need to take a ferry to Jiao Mountain, which takes five minutes. The island is shady with lots of trees, perfect for an afternoon stroll.
⚠️ If the elders have mobility issues, you can skip Jiao Mountain; Beigu Mountain and Jinshan are enough to see.
🚄 A taxi from Zhenjiang Station to Jinshan costs about CNY 15, just the starting fare.
2. Shangluo | Shaanxi
Shangluo is truly cool in the summer. The trails in Jinsixia are well-maintained, following the creek with plenty of shade, so it's not tiring for elders to walk. The sound of water in the canyon is loud, so you'll need to speak up, but the air is moist, and it's perfect to walk a bit and rest a bit. Tianshu Canyon is less famous and has fewer tourists; the mountain paths are flat, suitable for elders who like peace and quiet. Manchuanguan Ancient Town doesn't require an admission ticket. Locals still live on the old street, selling handmade hanging noodles and walnut cakes—buy a bag to snack on along the way.
⚠️ Baita Temple closes at 4:00 PM, so go early if you want to see it.
🍜 For lunch, have some potato ciba at the canyon entrance. It's freshly pounded, soft, and chewy, even elders with poor teeth can eat it. There are shuttle buses from Zhen'an to Jinsixia, but chartering a car is recommended for a convenient round trip in one day.
3. Taizhou | Zhejiang
Taizhou is suitable for families who like "looking at mountains without climbing them." Shenxianju has elevators and cable cars that take you directly to the top. The boardwalk is flat, and a loop takes two hours, which elders can handle. Guoqing Temple on Tiantai Mountain doesn't charge an admission ticket. The temple is filled with ancient trees, the incense is subtle, and it's comfortable to sit on a stone bench and listen to the wind chimes. In the afternoon, go to Taizhou Prefecture City. The city wall is flat, so there's no need to climb steep slopes. The light is best around 5:00 PM. Ziyang Street is right at the foot of the wall; after exploring, it's the perfect time to eat egg white sheep tail.
⚠️ Shenxianju has long queues during holidays, so try to choose a weekday.
📍 Navigate to the South Gate of the scenic area; it's closest to the cable car, saving you unnecessary walking. The drive between Tiantai Mountain and Linhai is about an hour, so it's recommended to split it into two days rather than rushing in one.
4. Xuancheng | Anhui
Chaji Ancient Village is much quieter than Hongcun and less commercialized; the old street still looks like a place where locals live their daily lives. The stone paths are quite old and slippery on rainy days, so have the elders wear non-slip shoes. A creek runs through the village, and a walk along the river takes about an hour and a half—perfect for walking, stopping, and taking photos. Jixi Longchuan is more refined; the wood carvings in the Hu Family Ancestral Hall are worth a close look, and it's very comfortable to sit in the shade inside the house for a while.
🍜 There's a small shop in the village selling ta-guo. They are freshly baked with preserved vegetable filling, thin, crispy, and fragrant—elders love them too.
⚠️ There is no direct bus between the two villages, so driving or chartering a car is recommended. If you want to stay overnight, most homestays in Chaji have courtyards. Pushing open the window in the morning to see the mountain mist is much more comfortable than rushing on the road.
5. Qiqihar | Heilongjiang
For Qiqihar, just head to Zhalong; you don't need to plan anything else. There are four red-crowned crane release shows a day; the 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM shows are the best, with good light and energetic cranes. The walking path is flat, and it takes about 20 minutes from the entrance to the release point. Along the way, you can see wild ducks and grey cranes in the reed marshes.
⚠️ Be sure to check the release times in advance; if you miss them, the trip is in vain. After watching the release, don't rush to leave. Walk deeper into the reeds; when the wind blows, the whole field of reed flowers sways, which looks much better than in photos.
🍜 Find any barbecue restaurant in the city. Qiqihar barbecue is charcoal-grilled and freshly mixed. The beef is tender, and the pickled cabbage cuts the greasiness. You can eat your fill for about CNY 60 per person.
🚄 It takes about 40 minutes by taxi from the city to Zhalong. It's hard to call a car for the return trip, so it's recommended to have the driver wait.
6. Anshan | Liaoning
Qianshan is not as famous as Changbai Mountain, but it's close to the city and has well-maintained roads. When taking elders, don't challenge Wufoding; just take the battery car to the God of Wealth Temple, then transfer to the cable car to go up the mountain. It's windy at the top, but the view is wide, and you can see the entire mountain range. The trail down is a gentle slope with pine trees providing shade along the way, and you'll reach the cable car station in half an hour.
📍 Longquan Temple at the foot of the mountain is very quiet with few pilgrims. There is an ancient well in the courtyard where you can get water to wash your hands.
⚠️ Food on the mountain is expensive and mediocre, so it's more practical to bring your own fruit and bread. You can stay anywhere in Anshan city; it's only a 30-minute taxi ride to Qianshan, and a half-day tour is enough. If you want to see wilder scenery, come the day after it rains; the mountains are full of mist, like an ink wash painting.
7. Changji | Xinjiang
The wheat fields in Jiangbulake are truly "wheat waves blown by the wind." They are greenest in July and August and turn golden by mid-September. The scenic area allows self-driving, so you can enjoy the scenery just by rolling down the car window without walking a step. Tianshan Tianchi is famous, but the boardwalk is flat, and battery cars can take you to the lakeside. Walking along the lake is not tiring.
⚠️ The temperature on the mountain is 10 degrees lower than in the city, so bring a jacket even in summer. Wucai Bay features Yadan landforms. The sunset is after 9:30 PM, and the light hitting the mounds turns them orange-red, which is perfect for photos.
🍜 The stalls at the entrance of the scenic area sell freshly baked roasted buns. They are crispy and fragrant, so eat them while they're hot. The distances between attractions in Xinjiang are long, so don't be greedy and try to visit two in one day. Split Jiangbulake and Tianchi into two days for a comfortable pace.
8. Jiaozuo | Henan
Yuntai Mountain is the one I recommend most out of these 8, but only if you take the right route. The boardwalk in Red Stone Gorge is built in the canyon and is flat the whole way. Looking up, you see Danxia cliffs; looking down, you see emerald deep pools. A loop takes about an hour and is not tiring at all. You need to take a cable car to Zhuyu Peak. It's windy at the top, but you can see the entire Taihang Mountain range. Qingtian River is more suitable for a boat tour; the water is calm, and the green mountains on both sides are reflected in it. Elders can just sit on the boat and enjoy the breeze.
⚠️ Yuntai Mountain is very crowded on weekends. It's best to stay in the Anshang Service Area inside the scenic spot and enter the park at 7:00 AM the next morning to avoid the crowds. Shennong Mountain has wild macaques, but don't feed them, or they will snatch your plastic bags.
🍜 After coming down the mountain, go to Jiaozuo city for a bowl of Wuzhi oil tea. It's salty, fragrant, and warming, much better than the fast food in the scenic area.
Of these 8 places, if you have to choose one to visit first, I recommend Yuntai Mountain in Jiaozuo. The route is mature, the physical requirements are low, and the scenery density is high. For the others, choose based on the season: go to Shangluo or Qiqihar in the summer to escape the heat, and go to Changji in the autumn to see the wheat fields and poplars. When traveling with parents, slow is fast. One attraction a day is enough; leave the rest of the time for street food and naps. What is the most worry-free place you have taken your parents to?
