Been coming here for years, and the fillet steak is always cooked just right. It&rsquo;s the one thing I know I can count on every time.

Tried the Sicilian calzone on Bishopthorpe Road. It was massive, each bite had something different - the mozzarella was really good and the tomato sauce rich. Finished with a scoop of their fresh ice cream from the bar. Solid spot.

My gluten-free diet means I rarely get good cake. Their lemon and rose meringue was a proper treat. The whole menu can be made GF, which is a relief. My dog enjoyed his sausage, too.

The beef stroganoff pie was the special. Really generous filling, you could tell it was all homemade. The flavour was spot on, not too heavy. Just a good, solid pie.

Came for a coffee and ended up staying for ages just watching the river. The staff were really nice about it, didn&#39;t rush me at all. That view is the real draw here.

The tomato salad. That&#39;s what I remember. The tomatoes were so fresh, the dressing sharp and bright. The spicy main dish was good, but the salad was the standout. Just a really clean, focused flavour.

Excellent pub, obviously loved by the locals who booked it out - so make sure you have a reservation. 6.30 seems to be when they all flock in. Our table was for 7pm so we ended up having a bit of a wait and to make an alternative choice for mains as ours was sold out. Well kept cellar - excellent beers and plenty of cocktails available. Will return when next in York

Been coming here for years, and the consistency is what keeps me back. The food is always solid, no surprises. Prices have crept up a bit lately, but you still get what you pay for.

The food was lovely, and our server Alice was so friendly. She checked on us just the right amount, which made for a really relaxed meal.
