Datong Ancient City

Datong Ancient City is the historic core of Datong, Shanxi. It served as the capital Pingcheng during the Northern Wei dynasty, the western auxiliary capital during the Liao and Jin dynasties, and a strategic frontier stronghold in the Ming dynasty, earning it the enduring title "northern key." Over its 2,000-year history spanning dynastic changes, the city's location remained largely unchanged, preserving its chessboard-style street grid centered on Sipailou to this day. The 2008 conservation and restoration project reunited the city walls, reconnected the moat, and gradually revived ancient architecture and old streets, layering the grandeur of an ancient capital with modern life within the same walled city. The ancient town offers an exceptionally dense concentration of noteworthy sights: in Huayan Temple's Liao- and Jin-dynasty halls, the graceful "clasped-hands, smiling" Liao-dynasty bodhisattva statue in the Scripture Depository Hall has long been hailed as the "Oriental Venus"; Shanhua Temple preserves a complete complex of Liao- and Jin-era wooden architecture. The Nine-dragon Wall, originally a glazed screen wall before the Ming-dynasty Dai Prince's residence (destroyed in war), survives with its nine coiling dragons still radiant—older and larger than its counterparts in Beijing's Forbidden City and Beihai Park. Climbing the reconstructed Ming-style city walls reveals a bird's-eye view of the square town's crisscrossing four main streets and orderly rooftops. An evening wait for sunset on the ramparts, followed by the illuminated outlines of walls and watchtowers after dark, makes for one of the town's most enchanting moments. Walking is recommended for touring: the attractions inside the city walls are spaced closely, allowing Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, the Nine-dragon Wall, and the drum tower to form a connected route. When tired, you may turn into the area around East Drum Tower Street, where time-honored shops and snack stores are concentrated, making it ideal for resting and replenishing. The ancient town covers a considerable area, so allocate at least half a day and wear comfortable shoes to leisurely appreciate the layered historical depth of this ancient capital.Datong · 1.9km from downtown

Datong Ancient City Wall

The Datong Ancient City Wall was constructed in 1372 during the Ming Dynasty's Hongwu era. This imposing and strategically formidable structure stands as a remarkable example of ancient Chinese military architecture. Its distinctive feature is the crenelated outer perimeter with protruding bastions and trapezoidal formations, creating a unique defensive design. The current wall was expanded by General Xu Da while garrisoning Datong, built upon foundations from the Han, Wei, Tang, Liao, and Yuan dynasties. Spanning 7.24 km in circumference, it encloses an ancient urban area of 3.28 square kilometers. Built with precisely cut stone slabs and rammed earth core faced with blue bricks, the wall measures 14m in height, 12m wide at the top and 18m at the base - 6.6m wider than comparable sections of Nanjing's city walls. The fortification features 62 gate towers, corner towers, and watchtowers, including four main gatehouses. The southern gatehouse is particularly impressive with its three-tiered structure measuring 61m across and 23.35m deep. Four corner towers dominate the wall's angles, with the octagonal northwestern tower (Qian Tower) being most distinctive. Among 54 watchtowers, the Hongzi Tower stands out as a rare architectural element. Additionally, 96 barracks were constructed along the wall. A 10m-wide, 5m-deep moat runs approximately 40m from the wall. Each main gate has an outer barbican (covering 17,600 square meters) and an additional crescent-shaped enclosure, creating three defensive checkpoints for entry. The gates feature arrow towers or two-story plaque towers. The four main gates are named: Heyang (East), Yongtai (South), Qingyuan (West), and Wuding (North). The comprehensive defensive system includes watchtowers, corner towers, gatehouses, and arrow towers spaced at intervals, complemented by drawbridges, barbicans, crescent walls, outer fortresses, and subsidiary walls, forming multiple layers of protection. The Datong Ancient City Wall stands tall and majestic, solid and precipitous, with tight defenses and complete facilities. It is a renowned fortified city with distinctive features in China's ancient military architectural history. Due to its crucial position in northern border defense and its significant role in numerous battles, it has long been honored as the "Imposing Stronghold" and the "Northern Key." A unique feature of the Datong Ancient City Wall is its gear-like outer contour. It has 52 protruding bastions with a trapezoidal structure, measuring approx. 23m at the base, 20m at the top, and covering a top area of 400 square meters. Corner bastion: Slightly taller than the watchtowers, each of the four corner bastions has an additional military control platform (also called observation platform) built outside it. The platform measures approximately 16.6m in width and 15m in length, spaced about 66m from the corner bastion, with a connecting footbridge to the city wall. This unique defensive structure is a distinctive feature of Datong Ancient City Wall.Datong · 2.1km from downtown

Datong Museum is a comprehensive museum, now a national first-class museum. It contains more than 10,000 pieces of cultural relics, and the majority of them are locally found. There are four exhibition halls in the pavilion, each of which shows the gorgeousness of Datong as the capital of Northern Wei Dynasty. The displays mainly include the ceremonial troops unearthed from Sima Jinlong's tomb, the headstones of Song Shaozu's ancestors, Persian silver coins, Xianbei accessories, and the Northern Wei Dynasty celadon. Among them, the stone carvings unearthed in the Northern Wei architectural sites outside the South Gate of Datong City are rarely seen in the art of stone carving.Datong · 5.7km from downtown

Jinhua Palace National Mining Park is located about 13 kilometers west of Datong City, across the river from the world cultural heritage Yungang Grottoes. In 2000, the "Underground Exploration Tour" project was developed here, becoming the first batch of national industrial tourism demonstration sites. The park integrates industrial site protection, environmental renewal, ecological restoration and green mine construction, which is a new leisure and tourism park and a mining cultural and creative park that leaves a complete modern industrial memory for the world. The main attractions in the park are the Datong Coal Museum and the Coal Capital Underground Fire Exploration Tour. The Datong Coal Museum in the park is a large-scale address mine museum integrating science, knowledge, ornamentation and fun. The treasure of the town hall here is a petrified wood that has been turned into coal, which is dark and has a clear texture, and you can still clearly see the scales and veins of the original plant. Tourists can also participate in the underground fire exploration tour of Coal Capital, truly understand the historical knowledge of coal formation in the Jurassic period 140 million years ago, experience the historical evolution process from primitive coal mining to modern coal mining, and experience the underground life of coal workers immersively. Before tourists go down to visit the well, they need to change into work clothes and wear safety helmets, and there will be about five people in the scenic spot to lead them down the well.Datong · 14.1km from downtown

The Datong Volcanic Group is one of the Quaternary Volcanic Groups in my country. It stopped erupting about 60,000 years ago. There are more than 30 known volcanic groups, mainly distributed in the eastern part of the Datong Basin. In the four areas of south and north, the western volcano located in the northeast of Datong County is a part of the volcanic cone landscape, which is dense and spectacular. Most of their altitudes are between 1100 meters and more than 1400 meters above sea level, probably due to the flat and broad valley landforms. Among the volcanoes in the west area, the larger diameter of the crater is Langwo Mountain, which is about 500 meters, almost in the shape of a perfect circle, and the average depth of the crater is 30 to 50 meters, which is also the deepest crater in the Datong volcanic group. Haotian Mountain is a relatively complete volcanic crater in the western part of Datong. From a bird's-eye view, you can find less than a little trace of water erosion on the mountain body over hundreds of thousands of years. It is located in the northeast suburb of Datong County, and has become a relatively prominent natural landmark of this small county. The volcanic cone of Jinshan is more like a bright "comet" burning in the summer night sky. And sparkling white. Looking down at Ge Laoshan from a high altitude, its shape is like a golden "peach heart". Since it is surrounded by radial water-eroded ditch texture, the "golden light" emitted from the "peach heart" is even more pronounced. charming. The volcanic cone of Dongping Mountain is far away from the dense area of volcanoes in the west area. It is located about two kilometers away from the due east of Datong County. When the volcano erupted, the lava flow spewed in the southeast direction, so there is a volcanic cone left in the southeast of the volcanic cone. The obvious gap makes the entire volcanic cone look like a vivid giant, horseshoe.Datong · 30.2km from downtown

Hunyuan Ancient City is located in Hunyuan County and is a well-preserved historical ancient city. It can be reached by car from Datong City in about 1.5 hours, or you can take the Hunyuan-bound shuttle bus from Datong Bus Station. The terminal is about a 10-minute walk to the south gate of the ancient city. The core area of the ancient city is connected by stone-paved streets and alleys to the Yong'an Temple, Yuanjue Temple Brick Pagoda and other historical sites. The rare water and land murals in the Yuan Dynasty hall of Yong'an Temple need to be viewed in detail. It is recommended to follow the guide to learn the details. The Yuanjue Temple Brick Pagoda retains the Liao Dynasty style, and the wind chimes on the tower body ring lightly with the wind, which is suitable for quiet experience. Pay attention to protecting cultural relics during the tour and do not touch the ancient buildings at will. There are mostly small shops on both sides of the main street that have been transformed from traditional houses. You can try Hunyuan jelly, which is recommended to be paired with local chili oil. It is recommended to wear a sun hat in the afternoon in summer; in winter, the bluestone slabs are prone to ice, so you need to wear non-slip shoes. If you have enough time, you can combine it with a visit to the nearby Hanging Temple (separate reservation is required).Hunyuan · 800m from downtown

Datong Fahua Temple is a Buddhist temple centered around a white stupa. The existing halls were rebuilt on the original site according to the rituals of the Lotus Sutra, forming a courtyard-style architectural complex with four courtyards, staggered heights, and symmetrical layouts alongside the ancient pagoda. Walking inside, along the central axis from south to north, you can see the glazed archway, the Hall of the Three Great Bodhisattvas, the Mahavira Hall, the Fahua Pagoda, and the Sutra Library, with the Bell and Drum Towers, the Sangharama Hall, the Patriarchs Hall, and the Arhat Hall built on both sides. The Hall of the Three Great Bodhisattvas enshrines the three great bodhisattvas: Guanyin, Manjushri, and Samantabhadra. The east and west walls are painted with the Eight Great Bodhisattvas and the Buddhas of the Ten Directions, while the rear wall depicts the scene of the Lotus Sutra assembly. The Mahavira Hall enshrines the Three Bodies of Buddha, with backlights made of hanging sculptures painted in stone green, deep blue, and other colors, creating a strong three-dimensional effect. The water-and-land murals on the gable walls, also known as the "Procession of Humans and Deities," feature numerous figures from Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, each with distinct forms.Datong · 2.2km from downtown

Datong Ancient City - Chunyang Palace is a Taoist temple of the Quanzhen sect dedicated to Lü Dongbin. It faces south and is laid out according to Quanzhen Taoist standards, featuring three courtyards. Along the central axis, the Mountain Gate, Lingguan Hall, Patriarchs Hall, Offering Hall, and Sanqing Hall are arranged in sequence, with the Bell and Drum Towers and side halls standing symmetrically on both sides. The Patriarchs Hall is grand in scale and built on a high platform; the surrounding corridor creates a "Hui"-shaped floor plan, subtly echoing Lü Dongbin's nickname, "Hui Daoren." The Offering Hall in front is open on all four sides, and the wood-carved corbels under the eaves, featuring two phoenixes playing with a pearl and pines and cranes symbolizing longevity, are worth a close look. The Sanqing Hall is a two-story pavilion, with the upper level once serving as a place for storing scriptures. To the west of the main courtyard lies a garden-style side courtyard, occupying about one-third of the entire palace. In the center is a treasure-gourd-shaped pond where lotus shadows sway and winding corridors twist and turn. By the fish-viewing terrace, you can watch fish swimming, creating a tranquil sanctuary amidst the bustling city. It remains a place for local Taoist activities to this day, with solemn statues in the halls and devotees frequently coming to worship, combining religious solemnity with the elegance of a garden.Datong · 1.7km from downtown

It's definitely worth a visit. Huayan Temple in Datong Ancient City was built during the Liao, Jin, and Northern Wei dynasties. The architecture is magnificent and simple, and it's remarkably well-preserved. The Buddha statues inside are solemn and dignified, with vivid depictions. The murals, though hundreds of years old, remain remarkably vibrant. We are grateful to the people of Datong for protecting them so well.

During the Spring Festival, the lantern festival and traditional song and dance performances were impressive and charming, and the crowds were quite large, making it very lively. There were also float parades, allowing you to see the performers up close. The ancient city wall is very long, and if you like walking, you can walk and practice on it.

It must be said that the Datong City Museum does an exceptionally good job with its exhibitions. When you have the chance to visit, you'll find the lighting and the arrangement of the exhibits are incredibly meticulous. Of course, the museum also has many fine artifacts, but unfortunately, many of them are replicas.

A less-visited but high-quality tourist attraction, located not far south of the Yungang Grottoes. While the Yungang Grottoes have long queues, this place offers a peaceful retreat. It mainly consists of three parts: a coal museum, a mine shaft, and industrial relics in the courtyard. The coal in the mine is currently not being mined as a strategic reserve and is specifically for visitors; the safety facilities are complete. It was a very unique experience. We were fortunate to have a guide who was a former miner, and his explanations were rich and insightful, imbued with the cultural spirit of Datong.

Recently, some free scenic spots have become quite popular. Langwo Mountain has well-equipped facilities; the boardwalk around the crater takes an hour and a half. There's a high-tech exhibition hall at the foot of the mountain. A shuttle bus costs 10 yuan round trip, but it's not far, so you can skip it. As for the other mountains, Haotian Mountain has a temple, Jinshan is still under construction (I didn't climb it), Heishan is said to have very bad roads, so I only viewed it from a distance. Tiger Mountain can be driven up, but there's nothing there, so it's just a viewpoint.

The highlight is that it hides many national treasure-level ancient buildings such as the Yuan Dynasty murals of Yong'an Zen Temple and the Jin Dynasty brick pagoda of Yuanjue Temple. The ancient streets and alleys retain the original ecological atmosphere, and the cheap food experience is excellent when paired with authentic Hunyuan jelly and other cheap delicacies.

Fahua Temple, located on Heyang Street in the ancient city of Datong, was first built in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties. Passing by, I was captivated by its architecture. The temple gate: a three-bay, four-pillar glazed tile archway, intricately decorated with yellow and green glazed tiles, its vibrant colors serving as the temple's iconic facade. The architecture blends Han, Tibetan, and Mongolian styles, making it a landmark of the ancient city that combines Zen Buddhist charm with frontier cultural characteristics.

The Datong Drum Tower is a typical example of Ming Dynasty pavilion-style architecture. The ground floor is constructed of bluestone at the four corners, with a cross-shaped doorway running through it. A wooden staircase on the northwest wall leads to the middle floor. Originally, plaques hung under the eaves of the second and third floors: the east-facing plaques read "Singing in the Wind" and "Clouds Part to Dawn in Spring"; the south-facing plaques read "Drum Tower" and "Sound Resounds Far and Wide"; the west-facing plaques read "Upholding Virtue" and "Harmonious Sounds Resound"; and the north-facing plaques read "Timely Harmony" and "Gazing at the Clouds and the Moon." A large drum was placed on the top floor, used in ancient times to announce the night watchman's shift, ensuring its sound reached far and wide. 1.
