Alishan National Scenic Area

5.9
4.8/5
837 reviews
The Alishan National Scenic Area includes Fanlu, Zhuqi, Meishan, and Alishan. The transportation network in these four counties spreads across the entire region like the veins of a leaf. Travelers move through the area, marveling at the lush forests, spectacular sunrises, and stunning clouds. Enjoying tea at beautiful tea plantations and visiting the Tsou indigenous tribe are leisure activities not to be missed. Alishan has been abundant in Taiwan Red Cypress and Taiwan Yellow Cypress since ancient times. After years of logging, there are now nearly 40 giant red cypress trees along the first and second phases of the Giant Tree Plank Walk. Among them, the towering "Alishan Xianglin Sacred Tree" stands at 45 meters tall with a trunk circumference of 12.3 meters and an estimated age of 2,300 years, making it an unmissable highlight for visitors to Alishan. The mountainous area boasts rich biodiversity, featuring rare plants such as the Cyathea spinulosa, Huperzia somai, and Pleione formosana. The wildlife is equally vibrant, with species like the Formosan rock macaque, Mikado pheasant, bush warbler, Taiwan bush robin, and the Alishan salamander. The forest train in Alishan Forest Recreation Area is beloved by visitors. The sunrise at Alishan is magnificent and unforgettable. The Zhushan area is an ideal spot to watch the sunrise. The Alishan area enjoys a cool climate with average temperatures around 10°C. It's worth visiting year-round, though July and August see more rainfall. From November to April, the northeast monsoon brings ideal conditions for witnessing spectacular sea of clouds and misty landscapes. Visit indigenous tribes to learn about local customs and culture. The Tsou villages feature thatched-roof houses, with the men's club "Kuba" being particularly famous. Short daylight hours and significant day-night temperature differences are the geological advantages of Alishan, making high-mountain oolong tea, Jinxuan tea, and tea bags highly popular. You can experience on-site/riverside tea tasting and bamboo forest tea ceremonies. More local snacks to try, including sunrise cakes and millet mochi.Chiayi County · 44.3km from Yunlin

• Sun Moon Lake is surrounded by mountains and lush forests. The lake is crystal clear, with visibility reaching over 10 meters. • There are many ways to visit Sun Moon Lake. Taking a yacht around the lake, the Sun Moon Lake cable car, the Sun Moon Lake bicycle path around the lake, and the lake trail are all good options. • Every spring, the cherry blossoms along the road are in full bloom, presenting a colorful scene △ Sun Moon Lake is a vast lake, and the peaks reflected in the lake look like a beautiful scene in a painting. There is a small island in the pond, which looks like a bead floating on the water from a distance, so it is called "Pearl Island" and is now also called Lalu Island. With this island as the boundary, the northern half of the lake is round like the sun, and the southern half of the lake is curved like a crescent moon. This is where the name Sun Moon Lake comes from. △ The Sun Moon Lake Lake Route has been hailed by CNN as one of the most beautiful bicycle lanes in the world. Whether you are traveling with friends, a couple on a date, or a family trip, you must ride a bicycle when visiting Sun Moon Lake and enjoy the freedom and comfort of the lake. △ Enjoy the entire lake tour to appreciate the scenery of Sun Moon Lake and the mountains, with the captain's warm service and on-board guided tour. Along the way, you can overlook Lalu Island, Sun Moon Resort, Lalu Island, Ci'en Pagoda, Xuanzang Temple, Xuanguang Temple, water boat house, four-handed hanging net, cable car station, Sun Moon Lake outlet, and Wenwu Temple. △ Sun Moon Lake Cable Car - overlooking the 360-degree view of the lake and mountains of Sun Moon Lake. If there is enough water, you may also have the opportunity to see the foggy and fairyland-like dreamy scenery.Nantou · 52.2km from Yunlin

Located in a prime location in Taipei, Taipei 101 was primarily planned by Taipei Financial Center Corporation, a consortium of fourteen companies, in collaboration with a professional team. Designed by renowned architect C.Y. Lee, the project transcends the concept of a single volume, using the auspicious number "eight" (a homophone for "prosperity") as a design unit. Each eight-story building forms a structural unit, interconnected and stacked to form the overall structure. This creates a rhythmic and dynamic aesthetic, pioneering a new style for international skyscrapers. Ultra-high-speed elevators: Taipei 101 Observatory is equipped with two ultra-high-speed elevators, with an ascent speed of up to 1010 meters per minute. It only takes 37 seconds to go from the 5th floor to the 89th floor observation deck. These two elevators are also equipped with constant pressure devices in the car, dampers, and high-temperature resistant ceramic braking systems, making them intelligent high-speed elevators that integrate high technology. The 89th-floor indoor observation deck, illuminated by dazzling lights at night, creates a dreamlike and immersive experience through its glass-enclosed landscape. Not only does it offer panoramic views of the city skyline, but it also features unique, private photo windows, ensuring every moment becomes a classic shot! Wind Damping Sphere: The full official name of the Taipei 101 wind damping sphere is the Tuned Mass Damper (TMD). It is a passive damping system custom-designed to meet the needs of this building, located centrally on floors 87-92. Its main purpose is to reduce the building's swaying during strong winds, minimizing discomfort for those working in the building. Unlike traditional concealed damping systems, the Taipei 101 wind damping sphere's design balances functionality and aesthetics, allowing a clear view of the entire damping system's operation from the observation deck. The multi-section exterior design naturally mitigates the wind field effect on the ground caused by airflow from high-rise buildings, and ensures pedestrian safety and comfort through the separation of green planting areas in the architectural design. Infinite Sky: Utilizing a unique mirroring principle, the interplay of reflections and rotations between the atrium and floor creates a visual experience of boundless space and limitless expanse, making visitors feel as if they are in a kaleidoscope world. Helpful Reminder: Female visitors wearing short skirts should be aware of the reflection issues on the mirrored floor. Rainbow Neon Zone: The night view from above, combined with neon lights, is a popular spot for taking photos and shouldn't be missed!Taipei

The Alishan Forest Railway is one of the three largest mountain railways in the world. The train departs from Chiayi, and along the way you can see three completely different types of plants: tropical, temperate, and frigid. Stop at Fenchihu Station to sample local specialties – wasabi and baby cabbage. Continue from Fenchihu Station to Alishan, climbing the mountain in a zigzag pattern, sometimes moving forward and sometimes moving backward. This is the famous “Alishan train crashing into the wall.”Chiayi City · 25.1km from Yunlin

Hinoki Village (English: Hinoki Village) is one of the attractions in Chiayi City, and it is also a forest cultural and creative park. The park includes a camping forest club, and a new "Agricultural Boutique Museum" is built at the intersection of Zhongxiao Road and Linsen East Road. It used to be the official residence of Alishan Forestry, and now it is a large-scale Japanese-style wooden historical building complex. After years of restoration and planning, the 28 cypress houses carrying historical memories, some of which are used as cafes, toy museums, or various cultural and creative shops, have injected new life into the cladding of historic sites, allowing the old Culture is preserved and new stories continue to stack. It is worth mentioning that in the movie "KANO", the handsome Kondo coach's home was filmed here. Don't forget to walk slowly and say hello!Chiayi City · 25.3km from Yunlin

There is an old military dependents' village near Lingdong University of Science and Technology in Nantun District, Taichung City. It attracts people from all over the world to visit every year. Veteran Huang Yongfu, because of boredom in his later years, picked up a paintbrush and used the alleys and streets in the military dependents' village as a natural canvas. All kinds of beautiful rainbow lines and cute animals are painted. Because of the bold colors, cute composition and full of childlike interest, it makes visitors feel like they are in a rainbow world. Therefore, netizens call it "Rainbow Dependents' Village", and Huang Yongfu is affectionately known by people. Known as "Grandpa Rainbow", many photography enthusiasts and young literary and artistic young people will come here to take pictures. The tens of meters long alley at the entrance of the village is a place where "Grandpa Rainbow" paints a lot, and it is also a lively place. Mr. Huang Yongfu's home is in this alley, and it is easy to find, because the gate of his house is covered with notes left by tourists, which are full of words of blessing: "Grandpa Rainbow, your The creation makes ordinary military dependents villages have extraordinary colors", "The painting is so beautiful, please continue to be colorful." From time to time, "Grandpa Rainbow" will go out of the house to take pictures with everyone at the request of tourists. He didn't mind that the tourists were tired, he pushed open the door and visited his old house of more than ten square meters. Although the house was not big, the walls were filled with dozens of cartoon characters and animal shapes, and various kinds of animals were placed on the bed. All kinds of woodcuts, and on the table are all kinds of watercolor pens, brushes and papers. Painting has become a habit of Huang Yongfu's life. He paints every day and will continue to paint.Taichung · 50.5km from Yunlin

Jiufen Old Street

Jiufen Old Street is located along Jishan Street, Shuqi Road, and Qingjing Road. The traditional-style buildings are built into the mountainside, featuring rows of old houses, narrow streets, and steep stone steps with varying elevations. The winding Jiufen Old Street preserves ancient living customs with its rich nostalgic charm. Red lanterns, narrow alleys, stone steps, and weathered wooden buildings have inspired many films. The street gained renewed fame through "A City of Sadness" and its resemblance to the setting in "Spirited Away." Old Street Delicacies The snacks on Jiufen Old Street are a feast for the eyes. We recommend Apo Lai Taro Balls, located at No. 143 Jishan Street. Their sweet soup or shaved ice is topped with red beans and peanuts. The mixed taro balls are sweet, soft, and delightfully chewy. Another shop, Auntie Taro Balls, offers a narrow dining space with a clear ocean view. Enjoy handmade taro and sweet potato balls while gazing at the sea—a truly relaxing experience. Other must-try treats include red glutinous meatballs, peanut roll ice cream, Hulichang braised snacks, Jiufen tofu pudding, and Jiudaokou beef noodles, all guaranteed to whet your appetite. The Old Street homestay avoids the bustling crowds. Staying overnight in Jiufen is a great choice. Many homestays are built along the slopes, towering and far-reaching. At night, when visitors disperse, the old street suddenly quiets down, leaving only a few lights, as if time has frozen. Enjoying such tranquility alone is truly wonderful.New Taipei City

This tour was surprisingly good. It wasn't a large group, but the most important thing was that the tour guide was very professional, articulate, and attentive to every detail. He was also very considerate and helped the passengers find the best angles for photos. This was definitely the best tour guide I've ever had! Of course, the car was also spacious, comfortable, and clean. I have to give it a thumbs up!

In the early morning, the Alishan train slowly started, shuttling through the misty forest. The wooden seats in the carriage exuded a faint pine scent, and outside the window was a continuous green bamboo forest and towering ancient trees. The train slowly climbed along the winding track, occasionally passing through a tunnel, and the view suddenly opened up, with the sea of clouds rolling underfoot, as if in a fairyland. The collision of the wheels and the rails was crisp and pleasant, accompanied by the birdsong in the mountains, like a symphony of nature. In front of the terminal, the sun filled the carriage, warm and quiet. This journey seemed to prolong time, making people indulge in the tranquility and beauty of the mountains.

We went to Taiwan during the New Year...We took the cable car to and from Maokong Station to visit tourist attractions. It was the cherry blossom season. The cherry blossoms were super beautiful and it was a great place for family travel. We will go there again next time we have the chance. The air quality is fresh and the scenery is beautiful. We have been to Taiwan many times and still can't get enough... Looking forward to the next trip

A place full of innocence The Rainbow Village was created by a retired veteran grandfather when he was bored. Later, it became well-known and became a must-visit attraction in Taichung. Many people think that the transportation here is not very convenient, but I think it is quite convenient. After all, Taichung’s public transportation is free within ten kilometers. The Rainbow Village does not charge admission

Jiufen, a mountain town, is a settlement in Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan, facing Keelung Mountain. The entire town sits on a hillside, creating a unique landscape of slopes and terraced buildings. It prospered in its early days due to gold mining, but declined after the mines were exhausted. The filming of the 1990s film *A City of Sadness* brought Jiufen's unique old-style architecture, hillside location, and charm to the attention of both domestic and international audiences, revitalizing the area and turning it into a tourist destination.
