Xitang Historic Town of China

Xitang Historic Town of China is located in Jiashan, Zhejiang, at the junction of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai. Historically known as Xietang and Pingchuan, it was the border area between the Wu and Yue states during the Spring and Autumn period, earning the description "Wu's root and Yue's corner." Unlike many overly commercialized water towns, it remains home to numerous local residents. At dawn, seniors can often be seen washing clothes by the riverbanks, while in the afternoon, they leisurely play chess under the covered corridors, giving it the reputation of "a living millennia-old town." Its three distinctive features—numerous bridges, alleyways and covered corridors—set it apart from other Jiangnan water towns. A nearly km-long covered corridor runs along the river, concentrated around Chaonandai and Beizha streets. Sheltered from rain while walking beneath it, this structure earned the poetic name "misty rain corridor." One side of the corridor features shops selling local specialties and snacks alongside residential houses, while the riverside offers occasional backrest benches for watching paddle boats pass by. During rainy seasons, sitting under the eaves to listen to rainfall and observe the water creates a uniquely charming waterscape. The town also boasts over a hundred ancient alleys, mostly paved with stone slabs. Among these, Xixia Street's Shipi Lane stands out—its narrowest section measures less than m wide, requiring pedestrians to sidle past each other while glimpsing only a sliver of sky above, famously called "Xitang's thread of sky." Over twenty ancient stone bridges span the river in the old town: Yongning Bridge offers a prime vantage point to overlook the river confluence and rows of dark-tiled roofs, with particularly clean photo opportunities during quiet early mornings. Songzi Laifeng Bridge stands out among Jiangnan's ancient bridges with its roofed top and stone seating for rest. Huanshou Bridge provides distant views of layered gray rooftops, while Wan'an Bridge served as the filming location for the finale chase scene in "Mission: Impossible III," where Tom Cruise sprinted through the town's streets and bridges. Xiyuan Garden and Zui Garden within the town exemplify delicate Jiangnan estate gardens—the former being a Ming dynasty private residence featuring pavilions, towers, and rockeries with fish ponds, the latter showcasing works by printmaker Wang and his son. Grand residences like Zhongfu Hall preserve traditional wealthy family layouts, with Huguo Suiliangwang Temple and Shengtang Temple maintaining strong incense traditions. The Button Museum, Chinese Wine Culture Museum, and Jiangnan Tile-ends Exhibition Hall house local folk memories. As night falls, Xitang dons a different face, with red lanterns lighting up one after another. Bars line Tangdong Street, filled with alternating songs and music, creating a striking contrast to the town's rustic daytime charm. Here, you might take a paddleboat ride—a cruise pier sits by Songzi Laifeng Bridge, offering a particularly delightful view of the waterfront lights reflecting on the water. Stroll a few steps, and you'll encounter street snacks like stinky tofu, tofu pudding, steamed pork with rice flour, braised pork, gorgon fruit cake, and glutinous rice balls. Authentic Jiangnan dishes can be savored at old restaurants along Beizha Street. Visiting in late autumn, you may catch the Hanfu Culture Week, initiated by lyricist Vincent Fang and held annually for over a decade, when the town brims with flowing traditional robes, enhancing its ancient ambiance. Travelers preferring tranquility can stay at alleyway inns away from the bar street—only by spending a night can one witness the quiet, unspoiled morning charm of the ancient town.Jiashan · 13km from downtown

Ceilinged Corridors are also called the rain corridors. Many ancient towns south of the Yangtze River have them. It looks like a street with wooden pillars and tile roofs. The rain corridor in Xitang is very distinctive because if you walk along the river in the old town, there will always be a shelter for you. Especially on rainy days, walking under the porch and listening to the patter of rain and the mysterious scenery outside the corridor. There is a strong artistic conception, so the rain corridor of Xitang has the reputation of "ceilinged corridor". The total length of the rain corridors in Xitang is nearly a thousand meters. Most of them are built on the riverside. Walking among the corridors, you can visit the various shops along the street. Sometimes there are sculling boats slowly shuttling tourists.Jiashan · 13.1km from downtown

Shipi Lane is located in Xixia Street, Xitang Town. It is a narrow alley between the Wang Family "Fengtang" and "Zunwentang". According to research, under the stone road inside Shipi Lane is a sewer that makes the water all over the rain. The thin stone slab is called the skin of the sewer. Looking at the sky in the stone skin, the broad blue sky becomes a narrow and long one, so it is also known as the "first-line sky" of Xitang.Jiashan · 13.1km from downtown

In order to commemorate Liu Yazi, it was named “West Garden”. The new West Garden has a beautiful view, and it is a meteorological style of traditional Chinese gardens. The trees and flowers in the garden and the rockery pavilion pool are very interesting. There are a number of exhibition halls for tourists to visit. There are “Tiantaoxuan” tea room on the east side of the rockery. The park is here for a while, and you can take a moment to enjoy the tea and enjoy yourself.Jiashan · 13.1km from downtown

Yongning Bridge is located in Xitang Ancient Town, Jiashan County, Jiaxing City. Yongning Bridge is a very good viewpoint in the town. On the north bank of the river, the long corridor is like a long dragon lying on the water. Pedestrians and bicycles are walking under the corridor. Its flavor is rare in other ancient towns. The Henan shore is behind the West Street. There are high and low residential buildings along the river, mostly from the late Qing Dynasty to the Warlord Era.Jiashan · 13.1km from downtown

Xitang truly lived up to expectations! The long, covered covered walkways are a highlight, with ancient bridges scattered along the river and cobblestone paths exuding a timeless charm. Quiet and elegant during the day, the night view is exceptionally captivating when the lanterns are lit, and the rowing boats gliding across the water create a truly immersive water town atmosphere. The combined ticket includes all the small exhibition halls inside, offering a wealth of content to explore at a leisurely pace. Online order verification was seamless; you can simply scan the code to enter without exchanging tickets, making for a great experience. Highly recommended for experiencing a Jiangnan water town.

Shipinong is one of the most distinctive attractions in Xitang Ancient Town. Shipinong is located on Xiaxi Street in Xitang Ancient Town. It is an open-air alley sandwiched between two houses and was built in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. It is named "Shipinong" because of its deep and narrow alley and the thin stone slabs as leather. It is also known as the "One Line of Sky" in Xitang. Shipinong is 68 meters long and is paved with 216 stone slabs with a thickness of only 3 cm, and the ground is paved with 168 stone slabs. The widest part of the alley is 1.1 meters, the narrowest part is only 0.8 meters, and the height of the gables on both sides is between 6 meters and 10 meters. There is a narrow sky above Shipinong. When walking in it, you can only see a thin ray of light, so it is called "Xitang One Line of Sky". Shipinong is the passage between the two houses of the Wang family, "Zunwen Hall" and "Zhongfu Hall", and is the passage to the house of the Wang family, a prominent family in Xitang. The narrow space and unique light and shadow effects of Shipinong make it a great place for taking photos, and it is suitable for checking in wearing Hanfu or ancient costumes. As one of the iconic attractions of Xitang Ancient Town, Shipinong attracts many tourists with its unique architectural style and profound cultural heritage.

Huanxiu Bridge connects the Misty Corridor and the bustling West Street, and is also the only way from the Corridor to Shipinong. Standing on the top of the bridge and looking out over the water town, you can see layers of gray walls and white tiles, two rows of big red lanterns hanging high by the river, and black-sailed boats swaying in the river, which is also a romantic scene.

Xitang is a nationally famous button town. Its subordinate Dashun Village produces tens of billions of buttons annually, which is close to half of the national total. The China Button Museum came into being in the ancient town of Xitang. The specific address is in Xue's house in the middle section of West Street in the ancient town. The Button Museum has six exhibition halls: Ancient Button Exhibition Area, Modern Button Exhibition Area, Modern Button Exhibition Area, Shell Button Production Process Exhibition Area, Button Application Area, and Chinese Knot Exhibition Area. Among them, the Ancient Button Exhibition Area displays a large number of belt hooks made of metal casting or jade carving in ancient my country. Many of them are Warring States treasures before the Qin and Han Dynasties, which are extremely rare.

The former site of Xitang Xiyuan is located in Jijia Lane, West Street. It was the second home of Zhu family in Ming Dynasty and was later sold to Sun family. There are trees, flowers, rockery, pavilions and pools in the garden, and the scenery is beautiful. There is a teahouse called "Tingtaoxuan" on the rockery on the east side. It is named because there are white pine trees on the rockery, which are several feet high and make a rustling sound when the wind blows.

This time when I came to Xitang, I found that there was a new place called Huaxiang. After walking across the Sixian Bridge, I came to Huaxiang. There are large areas of imitation Ming and Qing water town buildings here. The north and south entrances of the scenic area are all in this area. Many fast-moving consumer goods restaurants are opened here, and there are also many fashionable homestay hotels settled here. When I saw Huaxiang, it reminded me of Shuhe. When I first went to Shuhe, it was still a rather old town, and there were fewer tourists than local elderly people squatting in the corner to hatch the sun. After a few years, there were more tourists, and a new place was opened in the town, with some trendy coffee shops and handicraft shops settled in. People stopped here to rest and stroll, just like being in the ancient town, and like experiencing the different side of the ancient town.

Xitang's nightlife begins earlier than elsewhere. Just after 7 p.m., the ancient town's bar street is already bustling with activity. High-pitched dance music blares from the rows of bars, converging onto the cobblestone streets into a mighty wave of sound. Walking along this street, it's difficult to discern the melodies; only the throbbing rhythm of the music shakes you to the core.

Yongning Bridge is the most lively place in Xitang Ancient Town! You can't see the doorway during the day! At night, it is full of lights and wine! The bars and OK shops on both sides are very noisy! It is not recommended to stay near this place! Unless you are also a night owl! But as a tourist, walking on this bridge, watching the lights all over the street and the wine confessions in the clouds, and singing in the singers! 【Scenery】 【Fun】 【Value for money】
