What is the LNER Azuma?

The introduction of LNER Azuma trains marks the biggest transformation of the East Coast Mainline in over thirty years. As part of LNER’s fleet expansion, Azuma is gradually replacing older trains, increasing the total number from 45 to 65. This expansion means over 100 extra seats on the most in-demand routes, making rail travel with LNER more accessible and sustainable.

Faster and more efficient journeys

Azuma trains can reach speeds of up to 125mph and boast improved acceleration, reducing journey times across the network. This allows passengers to reach their destinations quicker than ever before, making Azuma a game-changer for commuters and leisure travellers alike.

An enhanced onboard experience

LNER has designed Azuma trains with passenger comfort in mind. Some of the standout features include:

  • Faster Wi-Fi for seamless connectivity.
  • Power sockets at every seat, with USB ports available in First Class.
  • More space for legs (approximately 7cm extra), luggage, and laptops, ensuring a relaxed journey.
  • Window blinds so you can travel at any time of the day
  • A Let’s Eat Cafe Bar, located in coaches B and G, offers a range of food and drink options.

Accessibility and inclusivity

LNER prioritises accessibility on all its trains, and Azuma is no exception. The new fleet includes:

  • Wheelchair spaces on coaches E and M (9- and 10-coach trains) and in First Class on 5-coach trains.
  • Priority seating is available for passengers with reduced mobility or those who are pregnant.
  • Step-free boarding assistance with improved ramps for easier access.
  • Audio and visual announcements for journey updates and safety information.

Seating and Coach Layout

Passengers should be aware that Azuma trains come in different lengths, including 5, 9, and 10-coach formations. First Class seating is available in coaches M, K, E, and D, while bicycle storage is provided in coaches K and D. Travelers are encouraged to check their seat reservations and board the correct section of the train accordingly.

Luggage and Bike Storage

One of the benefits of the Azuma fleet is increased luggage space, with larger overhead racks and under-seat storage for cabin-sized bags. Dedicated bike storage spaces are also available:

  • 5-coach Azuma: Two spaces in Coach K or D.
  • 9-coach Azuma: Four spaces in Coach K.
  • 10-coach Azuma: Two spaces in Coach K and two in Coach D.

Reservation-only travel

To manage capacity and ensure passenger comfort, LNER has implemented a reservation-only travel policy. All travellers must have a seat reservation, which can be booked online at Trip.com. Season ticket holders and flexible ticket passengers can make free reservations before their journey.
