How do I get to Newcastle train station?
Newcastle's train station lies right at the heart of the city centre, on Neville Street. Commonly known as Central Station, it's an enormous Victorian stone building, so you can't possibly miss it. There are good local transport links in the vicinity with various local train services that connect to mainline services arriving within the station itself.
Another good option is the Tyne and Wear Metro, which has a subway entrance directly outside the station. This wide-ranging light rail network extends to the airport in one direction and the nearby city of Sunderland in the other, making it an excellent option to reach Newcastle to London Kings Cross train services.
Bus stops around the station are serviced by both local routes and regional buses from nearby towns. Alternatively, most buses that travel into the centre will be within walking distance of the station, although it may be easier if you have wheeled luggage.
Should I go from Newcastle to London by train or plane?
Newcastle Airport is the largest in the region, but it's not huge by national standards - it's the eleventh busiest in the country. Flights to London Heathrow are the airport's most popular route, but we find it's generally better to take the train. They are far more frequent, more environmentally friendly, and probably take a similar duration once you take into account check-in and transfer time.
If you're planning to travel to London airports for onward travel, you'll be pleased to hear that transfers from the Newcastle to London train route are easy! London Kings Cross to Heathrow takes about an hour on the Piccadilly Underground line. And if you're heading to Gatwick, a ThamesLink service will take you there, again in about an hour.
Is there a Newcastle to London Sleeper?
No, there isn't a Newcastle to London sleeper service. As the journey time is only around 3 hours, it wouldn't make sense to offer a sleeper. In addition, the Caledonian Sleeper (one of the two remaining sleeper services in the UK) travels via the West Coast Main Line, so it doesn't pass through Newcastle.
What fun things are there to do in London?
In London, there is no shortage of exciting places to go. And you don't need to spend a fortune to enjoy yourself - there are plenty of free and cheap attractions in London. Have a look at our London Travel Guide and you'll find all sorts of inspiration.
If you fancy rising above the bustle of the city, then where better than the Sky Garden? Located at the top of the Fenchurch Building (known as the 'Walkie Talkie' building) it is exactly what its name suggests - London's highest public garden. An array of exquisitely tended tropical fauna combines with stunning views of some of London's most iconic buildings. Access is free, but you do need to book a timed ticket. There is a gift shop, plus bars and restaurants (though you may need to book separately for those). Monument Tube station is also just five minutes away.
Since you're in the City of London, why not pop in to the Bank of England Museum? Located at the Bank itself, it tells the story of money, including the history of counterfeiting, together with the history of the Bank of England. Plus, you'll be able to learn what all that writing on a banknote actually means! Happily, entrance is free here, too.
From there, head a couple of minutes south and you'll come upon the River Thames and its many bridges. Look one way and you'll see the Millennium Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge. Wander in the other direction and you'll go past Southwark and London Bridge. Keep going and take in the magnificent HMS Belfast before reaching the utterly stunning Tower Bridge. Built to allow road traffic to pass while also not impeding river traffic on the Thames, its two bascule arms still rise and fall a couple of times a day.
From there, head to Tower Hill Tube, where the Circle or District lines will take you back to Kings Cross for the train home.
