It is a shrine called 'Kitanomiya' because it is located in the north direction of ASO Jinja shrine, which is ichinomiya in higo province. In the engishiki jinmyocho (the register of shrines in Japan) which compiled the list of shrines in Japan in 927, higo province has four seats, and it is said to be one of the oldest shrines in Kumamoto Prefecture since 88 years old.
