We set off from Bali, flew to Surabaya in the afternoon, and arrived at the small town of Pangyue Bromo Volcano after about 5 hours by car. I enjoyed every bit of this adventure - it was affordable, and the views were absolutely worth the hikes and early starts. Bromo Stay: Urbanview B Syariah Lumajang Day 3: • Tumpaksewu Waterfall • Goa Tetes Cave Stay: ljen View Hotel & Resort Day 4: (started our day at 11.30pm the PREVIOUS day, slept at 6pm to make it to ljen before sunrise) • Hike Mt. Ijen - there's the option to hike down to see a naturally occuring blue fire, but there were too many people on that day, making the narrow path down quite dangerous. October 1, Sunday. After checking in at the SEWU waterfall in Indonesia, I returned to the hotel at 16:00 on the 30th. Around 2:30 in the morning, after the JEEP was ready, we switched to an old Toyota jeep and climbed steeply for about 30 kilometers. At 3:20 in the morning, we arrived at the BROMO volcano viewing point. It was cold on the mountain in the middle of the night, with assault clothes and down jackets, charcoal fire, hot coffee, waiting until about 4:15 in the morning, we climbed to the best viewing position, fully focused on the changing light and shadow of the upcoming sunrise over the volcano, the scenery was stunningly beautiful! After watching the sunrise, we took the JEEP to the volcano mouth, climbed up to watch the smoke from the volcano eruption and listen to the roar of the earth. At the end of the tour, we were covered in uncleanable volcanic ash and had a handful of beautiful scenic photos! Soaring over 2300 metres above sea level, this active volcano is spectacular and attracts many tourists from all around the world to view it. We engaged in a local tour to bring us to the volcano and the vantage point they brought us to is Mount Penanjakan. We woke up during the wee hours of the morning to travel and trek up the mountain to see the sunrise. The sunrise over Mount Bromo is breathtaking! It is one of the most beautiful sunrises that I have ever witnessed. Depending on your fitness level, the trek to the top takes about 20-30 minutes. Embedded within the fabric of this grand geological formation lies a legend - a selfless brave prince who sacrificed his life to appease the God for his family. This myth has been interwoven into the culture of Tengger as during the annual Kasada festival, the people can be seen throwing offerings into the crater of the volcano. This is a once in a lifetime experience that I wish to go again in the near future!
